Hi! So I just found out that Isaac Albéniz was Catalan. I’ve heard some of his works on classical radio; what is he famous for composing? Are there any other Catalan classical composers we should know about?

Yes, Isaac Albéniz was Catalan from the village Camprodon. His most famous work is a collection called "Iberia" of music inspired by places around the folk music of the Iberian peninsula, most importantly Andalusia (south). One of the most well-known songs is this one, called Asturies (located in the north, on the Atlantic coast):

He's one of the most famous composers of the Catalan modernist music movement. The other most famous one is Enric Granados

and also Josep Anselm Clavé though he's more famous for his role as creator of the workers' choirs than by his compositions.

OTD in Music History: Composer and concert pianist Pantaleon Enrique Joaquin Granados Campina (1867 - 1916) -- better known as Enrique Granados -- drowns in the frigid waters of the English Channel, after his passenger ferry is torpedoed by a German U-boat as part of Germany's WWI policy of unrestricted submarine warfare. One survivor reported that Granados actually made it into a lifeboat… but then heroically dived back into the water in a futile attempt to save his wife. Ironically, the part of the ferry that housed the Granados family never sunk; almost all of the passengers who were bunked in that section survived, except for Granados and his wife, who just happened to be strolling on the opposite side of the boat when it was hit. They left behind six children. Granados is remembered today for his epic piano suite "Goyescas" (1911), a set of six difficult concert showpieces based on paintings by Francisco Goya (1746 -1828). “Goyescas” was an immediate hit, and Granados was encouraged to expand it into an opera, which premiered in New York in January 1916 and was very well received. Based on the success of that premiere, Granados was then invited to perform a private piano recital for President Woodrow Wilson in Washington, DC. His acceptance of this honor delayed his planned return to Europe, thus placing him and his wife on the doomed ferry vessel. (The opera version of “Goyescas” is no longer performed.) PICTURED: A 1903 autograph letter written by Granados to a friend on the stationary of his private music school -- the "Academia Granados" -- regarding musical matters. That same year, Granados participated in a composition competition at the Madrid Royal Conservatory, submitting his "Allegro de concierto" (Op. 46) which earned the prize and catapulted him into musical stardom.

CASA SAYRACH

Imponente, destacando sobre todo su entorno, en plena avenida Diagonal, en el número 423, se levanta uno de los últimos edificios del modernismo de Barcelona. Justo en la esquina con la calle Enric Granados surge un edificio modernista tardío, construido en el año 1918, cuando ya casi ningún arquitecto trabajaba ese estilo. La obra fue firmada por Gabriel Borrell, pero es del arquitecto y escritor Manuel Sayrach, hijo del promotor del proyecto el que realmente realiza la obra. Sayrach hijo no tenía la carrera acabada cuando concibió este impresionante edificio que denota la clara influencia de Gaudí en el uso de las líneas curvas y la exquisita decoración interior. Podríamos decir que esta gran casa es la herencia de todo aquello que los maestros del estilo habían hecho hasta aquel momento en Barcelona. La Casa Sayrach es un edificio liviano, más liviano que los clásicos modernistas y, debido a ello, tremendamente elegante. Para mi, esa elegancia y belleza radica en la contención de las formas curvas que caracterizan la fachada y en la ausencia de sobrecargados elementos decorativos tan típicos de los modernistas. El edificio se articula con eje semicircular e la esquina coronado por una hermosa torre o templete de color blanco y un remate de azotea completamente gaudiniano. También destaca la composición de la planta principal con una tribuna y balcón corrido entre columnas a modo de galería con grandes ventanales. Su vestíbulo y escalera son impresionantes al estar profusamente decorados. La primera vez que entras en el edificio, os puedo asegurar que tardas 15 minutos en llegar a la escalera o ascensor. Hay tantos detalles que ver... el conserje está más que acostumbrado a que la gente se queda anonadada y te observa orgulloso de poder estar y trabajar en ese lugar. El tema de les cafeteries especialitzades se’ns està anant de mare. Molta Marzocco i molta Chemex, però serveixen el cafè en got de cartró, et controlen el temps de consumició (és pot veure a través de la tablet de control que hi ha a la barra) i els seients son incòmodes. I el cafè amb llet (True White) a dos euros amb noranta. Sembla una cafeteria molt estudiada i no deixa de ser una franquícia amb cafeteries a Brasil, Portugal, Perú, França i Colòmbia. A Barcelona ja conten amb tres establiments i venen a competir amb el Syra Coffee, l’altre franquícia que envaeix la ciutat de Barcelona.

Ubicada en el distrito del Ensanche, en la intersección entre las calles de Aragón y Enric Granados, y muy cerca del edificio donde trabajo, está la plaza del Doctor Letamendi, en honor a Josep de Letamendi i de Manjarrés (Barcelona, 1828 - Madrid, 1897), un reconocido médico, músico, pintor, filósofo y poeta barcelonés. Este espacio, rodeado de edificios y con abundante vegetación, resulta una necesaria pausa en medio del agitado tráfico peatonal y automotriz de sus calles. Estos días de primavera son una abierta invitación a disfrutar de su sombreada calma.

The ending of El Sur feels right: After her father's suicide, Estrella (Icíar Bollaín) falls ills and to recover goes to stay with her grandmother in el sur, the southern Spain that she has never seen, from which her father exiled himself because his Republican sympathies were at odds with the Nationalism of his father during the Spanish Civil War. We've seen how Estrella has imagined the South as warmly antithetical to the often chilly and sometimes bleak environs of Madrid where she and her parents live. She is also tantalized by the mysterious past of her father (Omero Antonutti), who once loved a woman who had a brief film career under the name Irene Rios (Aurore Clément), and who made a phone call to a number in the South shortly before he killed himself. Do we need to follow Estrella to the South to know that other mysteries will open themselves to her? And yet writer-director Victor Erice wanted to do so: He planned another 90 minutes to El Sur that would show us what Estrella did and found there, but was stymied by his producer's insistence that there was no money to film it. The remarkable thing is that the film as stands feels complete. What feels right about the ending of the film that we now have is that it's a part of what we know about Estrella: her solitary pursuit of mysterious things. This is a film about awakening and illumination: It begins with the dawn's light gradually penetrating the sleeping Estrella's room, and windows play a significant role in creating the film's symbolic texture. The scenes from the movie in which Irene Rios stars provide another kind of window. The most brilliant sequence in El Sur is the final meal Estrella shares with her father in a hotel dining room illuminated by high windows. She and her father are the only diners in this space, but a wedding party is taking place in an adjacent room whose windowed doors are covered by curtains. At one point Estrella goes to the doors and peeks into the room, whose music echoes that played at the party after her first communion, when the younger Estrella (Sonsoles Aranguren), dressed in white "like a bride," danced with her father. El Sur has the wholeness we expect of good films, and though we may wish that Erice had been allowed to give us more, we can be content with what we have.
