I’ve always believed that Westerns aren’t really for me. Until I read Nunslinger by Stark Holburn and The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt which gave me a whole new appreciation for the genre. Lonesome Dove looked intimidating in terms of length but thanks to some wonderful bookstagram friends, it was quite the wild ride and such a great adventure story. Hey, it won a Pulitzer Prize for a good reason!⁣ ⁣ It follows the inhabitants of a dusty little Texas town called Lonesome Dove as a group of men (and one incredibly determined woman) set out on the journey of a lifetime to see if there is a better life for them all miles away from the monotony of their everyday existence. ⁣ ⁣ This novel is filled with everything you could want from a tome just under 1000 pages long. Epic in scope, in what it chooses to deliver and in how the narrative plays out for our unique and memorable set of characters, Lonesome Dove is nothing short of breathtaking. ⁣ ⁣ Furthermore, I love that I went into this story with no prior knowledge of the events that occur and very little expectations. It made the journey all the sweeter and the surprises even more exciting when they come. This is an adventure story but it’s also much more than that. We have love, death, betrayal and those cliffhanger moments where anything could (and does) happen. ⁣ ⁣ The only thing that didn’t sit quite right with me was the casual racism and the way certain characters were treated based on their ethnicity (Native American and Mexican) and although you might say it’s a book “of its time,” I just wanted to put it out there as it did make me uncomfortable. ⁣ ⁣ I am keen to read the rest of the books in the series though. Thanks to Steve, Celeste and Rich amongst many others for making this long journey with me! ⁣ ⁣Four solid stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ⁣ ⁣ ⁣#bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #readingwithfriends📚 #buddyreadobsession #lonesomedove #larrymcmurtry #epicnovels #westernnovels #recommendedreads👍 #seriesiwanttoread #booksandplantstagram #reviewingonline ⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/CledFaVLV8G/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A page turning debut from A. L. Jones, in the tradition of Stephen King, The Last Stand and Michael Crichton, World War Z, Sunburn is an epic dystopian Sci-Fi Fantasy, set to thrill and engage you as you embark on not just the adventure of a lifetime; but of a millennium. It was hotter that ever. Hotter than the depths of hell…

The Sixth Judgement • Prologue final The Lands of Elpida (Eurasian continent) or has never been in contact with anyone from the other lands, there were rumors that these lands who’s had a majority of the elder population, could not reproduce fast enough and that therefore, the whole western population had become extinct. Unfortunately, after the war, nobody cared to cross the dead ocean and investigate what was going on the other side. Some merchants were spreading rumors that in the Nekros area (Land of the Dead) Gan virus has provoked some sort of mutation within its hosts, specifically affecting wildlife and that it is extremely dangerous approaching these lands. Merchant sources were never clarified and confirmed to be reliable as nobody had been to these lands after the infection since reaching Nekros required several weeks of travel. Hence what the merchants told about Nekros was never clarified and confirmed. After the Slagveld war, the fallen ones who could not develop Gan immunity were left behind untreated rotting under the sun and waiting for the decomposition process to begin. According to the four prospers, since there was no cure created against the virus, These people were considered a burden and resources were not to be wasted, as the young generation was already facing severe famine. Those who were left on the battlefield were screaming in pain under the burning sun which was intensifying the dehydration process until their heart seized; Meanwhile, the Gan virus was doing everything possible so that the host body would die before it had consumed all its resources. Sadly, the body of the host could not stop functioning until the heart stopped or someone finished them off… The land of Slagveld had been heavily impacted by these problems as the ocean had been depleted and had become a desert. Due to the high temperatures, civilization was scarce and hunting was extremely limited. On the other hand, the land of Aleksithimia, controlled by prosper Aleksithimia himself, has become the richest land of them all. ___________________________ #youngwriters #epicnovel #freereed #amateurwriter #bookgram #litfic #fiction https://www.instagram.com/p/BtI9EHMFpbc/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=hkodzsopblx5

Happy Friday everyone?! • QOTD: Which is the largest book you have read in a single sitting? Mine is easily The Priory of the Orange Tree which I read in a crazy 18 hour stint. It was pulling an all-nighter to watch the Oscars and kept myself awake with this behemoth of a novel. Next time I read this I plan on taking it one section at a time to fall back in love with the characters properly. • #bookwormproblems #qotd #bookishlife #readinghabits #booksandtea #cuppa #mycupoftea #teaoholic #bookpic #bookishflatlay #fffiction #womeninfantasy #fantasyfiction #epicnovel #theboneseason #theprioryoftheorangetree #samanthashannon #epicbooks #booksbooksbooks #hardbackfiction #ladiesofbookstagram #readmore (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAxThpMgzCQ/?igshid=188ij0dkf30e8

The Parentations was the second book for my #wasitworththebump challenge in October and gosh, I was in for an epic ride with this one. The novel begins in 18th century London and where Constance and Verity Fitzgerald are tasked with looking after a very special baby from nefarious characters that wish him harm. ⁣ ⁣ The plot is pretty convoluted - the reader is then taken to Iceland and told about a magical pool which can give immortal life to those who drink from it (with certain caveats). That really doesn’t do justice to exactly how complex this story is but I feel as if this book is one of those you can approach without reading a synopsis and then, ever so slowly, pieces start falling into place. ⁣ ⁣ I never knew what to expect next with The Parentations, a fact that makes me love it even more. Even though the plot is intricate and spans centuries of time, it always felt like the author knew exactly what she was doing and was guiding the reader along. The character development is nothing short of superb, and I felt as if I really got to know each individual personally as a silent watcher of their lives over many years. ⁣ ⁣ This novel is magical, adventurous, beautifully descriptive and completely unique. I fell in love with the writing, the sense of place and time and the entire idea behind this story. It’s a lengthy novel at nearly 500 pages in hardcover but it’s worth every page as the narrative unfolds so wonderfully. ⁣ ⁣ Thank you so much to the amazing @savidgereads who made me pick up this book a lot sooner than I would have done. Was it worth the bump? Absolutely!! ⁣ ⁣ 4.5 stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 💫 ⁣ ⁣ ⁣#bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookworm #bookreview #bookrecommendations #beautifulbooks #unforgettablereads #theparentations #katemayfield #authorstowatch #youneedtoreadthis #epicnovels #historicalfiction https://www.instagram.com/p/CV2D5eHgAiS/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Sixth Judgement • Prologue part four The current story is taking place after the great war of the ”Slagveld” (the year 2070 – 2073). This was the war for what remained of the Atlantic ocean. Before the elders’ passed away, they were assigned specific roles within their religions to protect their history and culture for the future generations. The end of the war of the ”Slagveld” resulted in the loss of many people. Four prodigies (or the most talented individuals) were assigned by the last surviving elders. People called them ”Prospers”. The continent was divided into 5 regions, and the Prospers were given land ownership of a respective region: Land of Aleksithimia (Grand Central – European continent), Land of Elpida (Eurasia), Land of Slagveld (African continent), Land of Zenit (Nordic countries) and Land of Nekros (The first area that has been affected by the Gan virus, appears to be inhabited). After the election, each Prosper applied their own culture and religion to their land. The agreement of peace had finally begun. [the Year 2083] Four prospers could have made a pact of the permanent cease-fire, however, internal problems of acceptance between the inner population and conflicts within lands were never concluded. Remaining territories were still under anarchy rules which constantly led to conflicts between native and previously migrated inhabitants. Due to the lack of natural resources, both parties were struggling to maintain a healthy and sane balance; Depending on regions, plantation of resources and hunting were rarely possible without specific constructions and gears; This was the main cause of famine in rural areas. __________________________ #youngwriters #postapocalypticnovel #novel #scifinovel #freereed #freebook #freenovel #epicnovel #epicbooks #litfict #fiction #bookclub #bookgram #iwrite #iwritenovels https://www.instagram.com/p/BtI7WzOFqL7/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=12wv3ewtdbn6u

I’ve always had a fascination with Asian history and culture and have heard great things about Edward Rutherford as an author so when Jenni @tarheelreader suggested China for our next buddy read, I jumped at the chance (even though I felt slightly intimidated by the size of it at a whopping 752 pages in hardcover). ⁣ ⁣ China is not only epic in length, it is an epic story that the author has undertaken which merges fictional characters with historical figures and authentic events that occurred at that time in the country’s history. Beginning in 1839 during the First Opium War, we follow Chinese, American and British characters through the rise and fall of various powers as the colonial West meets the opulent East.⁣ ⁣ As a British person, I always read fiction and nonfiction like this with an incredible sense of shame for the way in which my ancestors colonised land and treated the native people and China is no exception. However, I’ll always feel grateful about the things I learn along the way. ⁣ ⁣ One of my favourite things about reading books set in different countries is the way of life, culture, beliefs and manners I get to experience and I think Rutherford did a fantastic job of portraying a variety of different characters, all from different socioeconomic backgrounds and statuses. It’s very clear that he has put in the research and although at times, it felt like I really had to concentrate in order to absorb the wealth of information, I did find myself heavily invested in many of the characters lives. ⁣ ⁣ I’d recommend this novel to anyone like myself who is interested in Chinese history and culture. It almost feels like there could be a part two and if so, I’d be very keen to read it and re-visit these characters and their families once more. ⁣ ⁣ 3.5 stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 💫 ⁣ ⁣ ⁣#bookstagram #bookrecommendations #bookstagrammer #bookreview #historicalfiction #china #edwardrutherford #epicnovels #asianfiction #chinesehistory #theopiumwars #buddyreadswithjenni https://www.instagram.com/p/CSfDn-bLE0Q/?utm_medium=tumblr
