I'm just kidding, I'd love to see your perspective on these splatbands. And Imma just ask for the obvious with Ink Theory.

Analyzing INK THEORY

While they are said to all have graduated in their Haikara Walker bios, the Splatoon Base points out the band was formed during their school years. [x] (Then again it might be a SplatENG flourish, bc it isn't mentioned in the JPN page, it just calls them "a girl band from music college")

All of the members are said to have been making music since their childhood, according to again Haikara Walker [X].

The band has an obvious HTE influence. "Karen, the pianist from Ink Theory, was the top graduate from a famous music school. But she was struck by the work being produced by a senior at the same school—Taka from Hightide Era." [X] This could be interpreted as Karen was influenced by Taka before he dropped out as her senior, or it could be referring to Taka as Karen's senior in age in general , or Karen had graduated already and influenced by Taka who was a senior?

You need high IQ to understand Ink Theory- at least, that is the claim by SplatoonUS tumblr. They are popular with discerning inklings, young or middle aged.

Their music is jazz and samba inspired. Their music is shaped by their academic excellency and their modern sensibilities. [X] The Splatoon Base calls their take on these genres "aggressive".

Mayaya and Karen are mentioned to be especially academically gifted, and Bibi is also mentioned to have graduated from a notable musical academy herself. Same is not said for Aachin, Kitamura and Yoko (Yoko herself coming from a conservatory training [X]) , but all are mentioned to be academically trained. [X]

A thing to note is their rivalry with Bottom Feeders, who debuted at the same time, and whom they don't along with. This could be because Bottom Feeders have tradition at heart, Tangle even said to be dissatisfied with modern music, while Ink Theory has modern sensibilities. Finn seems to be especially not get along with them, since it's mentioned in her bio specifically. [X] The two bands got into a music battle in ZAPP Square, and their rivalry is said to fuel each other. [X]

They are still A Thing, as Golden Bazookas are said to be a side project in SplatoonNA tweet. [X]

Yoko (from Haikara Walker)

...is the head of the band, who is under the weather no matter the matter the weather. The cause of this is implied to be her sensitivity to atmospheric pressure.

She is said to feel upstaged by her bandmates colorful personalities, but still remains the leader. I presume the fact she is also leading Golden Horns does show she has leadership qualities, which is precisely why she is the leader even though she's not the most extravagant.

This could also mean she is the straight man of their group dynamic.

She is said to have a conservatory background.

Her tentacles are multicolored due to a mutation. She is said to be able to change these colors at will, though it isn't per se useful in most situations.

She is a hard worker and gives a solid performance no matter what, but is said to get nervous before large performances. (I think this more or less implies her to be somewhat of a perfectionist)

She is said to have focused on polished, virtuoistic performances in this era.

She has a brand, which is to say her horned hats, which she wears in all art that depicts her (which also why it is the symbol for Yoko and the Golden Horns.) in YATGB's Japanese names, the band IS called Yoko Horns and Friends, so Yoko Horns might even be her stage name/monniker. (A little birdie told me the hat she wears in Valentines art spells out Karen, which could have implications.)

She has a sister in highschool. That's about we know about Yoko and her sister.

Karen (from Haikara Walker)

...is the founder of the band, who was inspired by Taka and HTE to found the band girl get better taste. She even has a HTE necklace and stickers in her phone in Valentines art.

She is very talented, going overseas for competitions has won many of them, and graduated top of her class from her school.

She comes across as very self assured, and perhaps is except for one thing. She isn't as popular as her groupmates, which seems to make herself doubt herself.

But she seems to find the fault in herself and not in her groupmates or anything like that, as she provides the moral support and a good atmosphere for the group.

Bibi (from Haikara Walker)

Regarded as the most beautiful girl of the group, she is the public's darling (at least closer to public than other girls.)

She is spoken with high regard, fans referring to her as "Bibi-sama".

She graduated from a notable music school, but there's no mention of her academic success. (So, average?)

She is said to be a big spender yet have no money problems. (So rich and perhaps spoilt)

This is purely speculation on my part but things seem to point towards her being somewhat of an Ojou-sama.

Aachin (from Haikara Walker)

Although Aachin is not mentioned to have gone to a notable school, she is the daughter of two famous classical musicians, in a strict household.

She is said to have favoured bands from different genres than her parents, like rock, SQSQ specifically according to the Valentines art, from the keychain in her bass case. However, she has started to see classical music in a new light, probably because of the band.

She is romantically inexperienced and tends to fall for self-degrading people.

Mayaya (You’ll Never Guess Where)

Mayaya is said to have joined the band at a later date than others, after graduating and deciding she would like to create her own music first than become a music instructor.

She is academically gifted, having had the offer to join the alumni by one of her professors (possibly her mentor prof? i have one of those idk if they are a thing in Jpn or US)

She freelances percussion for other bands as well, but Ink Theory is her main thing. Could be fanfic material.

Kitamura (Again, Haikara Walker)

Band’s mascot.

Kitamura's name is from "Kita Murasaki Uni", the Japanese name for Mesocentrotus nudus. For your consideration.

She regularly follows fads.

Has a high singing voice.

She lives alone but follows a curfew (She might be younger than rest of the band? Combined with the fad thing, also the fact she isn’t said to have graduated from her school either.)

So yeah, I unfortunately didn't have any big revelations with them. But it was really fun to figure out the small stuff as well! Hope you like it!

Anon, the entire idol industry is corrupt. No exception.

I liked Momoclo but when I heard one of the member who freshly graduated from the group announced (Momoka Ariyasu) marrying one of their manager, I got like "obviously"....

First generation Momusu had their load of scandals but they were pretty tame (dating or smoking scandals) though it's a well known thing that many idols get 'messy' with their (married) manager or producer. Most idols are underage when debuting, some are even children (eg °C-cute, another group produced by Tsunku, debuted with members as young as 13 years old...). And it's not rare that idols are signed into their agency as young as 10....which leaves a wide room for predator to groom them from inception.

I'd say Perfume are the perfect achievement of idols. They are an outstanding case of idols in their 30s. Their story is super endearing too. They weren't supposed to go past their first album (hence why it's called "Perfume -Complete Best") which was a compilation of their indie hits as kid idols from Hiroshima....until they got a surprise hit with "POLYRHYTHM" and they've now become one of the most popular japanese female pop band in Japan AND internationally. They are branded like idols so they have a VERY polished aesthetic & public image and never got any scandal. But their aesthetic shifted into something very robotic and cold.

Perfume had those strong dancing routines since forever but they still had something lively (such as "Dream Fighter" or "Baby Cruising Love"), but since a while (I'd say JPN album era) I'm getting strong transhumanism agenda/robotic coming from them.

"Spring of Life" MV literally have them as robots with spread out body parts...

...a shame cause the song is a bop and those LED outifts were gorgeous (it's one of my favorite dance routine of them)😭🤍

"Spending all my Time" MV also always gave me mind controlled teas. The dance routine is the most impressing but extremely robotic and kinda....nonsensical and disturbing(?) It's actually very fitting with the song which has a very intoxicating chorus though. And the song is a bop so.....🥴🥴

learning abt jpop & it rly is just like... weird to consider how different idol culture is apparently from jpn & kr....... like in kr, idols have to go through EXTENSIVE training & vetting but from what i gather, jpn idols don’t rly get trained much at all before debuting...?? & apparently much of that is bc jpn general public like seeing idols develop their own identities & skills & it’s much more abt the parasocial relations than like actual singing/dancing/performance... which is so different than kpop....... it tracks tho bc jpn pop culture is saturated w like tropes of “fresh scrappy kid overcomes the odds & discovers their own talent within through their own efforts’ but to think there’s rly like little technical training at all esp compared to kr...... explains a lot of why kpop is so popular in jpn tho (besides the Colonialism) like the quality is simply v v different....... & the degree of creepiness from men around female jpop idols.... 👁👁⚔

like i feel like a lot of the initial criticisms around aespa & their AIs were abt fears of the blurring of virtual world & reality & possible consequences of self-esteem/worth from the members which i do think is legitimate & i share that opinion. but i think lot of the criticisms from international fans assumed that that was already prevalent in kr around idols but i truly do not think so, but it IS actually v prevalent in jpn culture, the whole escaping into fantasy for jpn youth post-war era & reality & virtual blending into one & public/private personas becoming indistinguishable & the high degree of control the audience feels entitled to over you as a public figure esp as a woman... like isekai’s popularity now is sooo predictable.....

AA Performances of the Decade—as voted by the gymternet

Ok some of you might remember I put together a vote for the best routines of the decade as a run-up to the Olympics, and then I TOTALLY forgot to post the final one in the series, which was favorite all-around performances. Since Tokyo 2020 isn’t happening, I thought I should go back and finish off writing out this one. For your quarantine viewing pleasure, here are your favorite all-around performances of the decade, as voted by the tumblr gymternet.

1. Aliya Mustafina (RUS)—2010 Worlds (40 votes)   VT / UB / BB / FX The winner by a LANDSLIDE. Proud of all of you—time could not erase the euphoria of witnessing the coronation of Queen Aliya. And because I know we all live for this shit, here’s Aliya+Russian anthem

2. Simone Biles (USA)—2016 Olympics (19 votes) VT / UB / BB / FX The GOAT. One of the most dominant AA showings in history.

2. Morgan Hurd (USA)—2017 Worlds (19 votes) VT / UB / BB / FX She is the only gymnast who has won a World all-around title since the Simone era began, though her 2017 program deserves more than just comparison. As a first year senior, facing immense pressure and Montreal’s horrible lighting, she produced a clean and consistent day, topped off by a well-executed and difficult floor routine with beautifully interpreted choreography.

4. Larisa Iordache (ROU)—2014 Worlds (15 votes) all routines Romania’s best AAer in recent years, Larisa gave Simone a run for the gold, missing out by only a few tenths. Only #TrueLegends take an extra long choreo break in the corner to decide if they should upgrade their last pass to a piked full-in, and then actually go for it in a final bid for the gold.

5. Shang Chunsong (CHN)—2016 Olympics (10 votes) VT/ UB/ BB/ FX I AM ETERNALLY SAD ABOUT THIS. She finished at a heartbreaking 4th place, just 0.116 away from bronze, reigniting complaints from 2015 about underscoring and generating the #SongsongWasRobbed movement.

6. Mai Murakami (JPN)—2018 Worlds (8 votes) VT / UB / BB / FX One of the best Japanese female gymnasts ever, Mai has been a force on the international stage since her senior debut in 2012. In 2017, she had a golden opportunity to win AA gold over Hurd, but fell off the beam and the medal podium. In 2018, she took her opportunity and won silver, showing her chops as a floor champion with a routine featuring a double double and double layout. She became Japan’s first ever (edit:)silver AA medalist (sorry i forgot u Koko), and jumped tearfully into the stands to hug her equally tearful mother.

7. Gabby Douglas and Viktoria Komova (USA)—2012 Olympics (7 votes each) Gabby VT / UB / BB / FX Vika VT / UB / BB / FX

I PROMISE I DIDN’T RIG THIS, but it’s maybe fitting one of the biggest AA controversies of the last decade ended up tying each other, head to head. Gabby, a dark horse prior to the competition, made history and became the first black Olympic AA champion. With high difficulty and clean execution highlighted by a stand-out bars routine with soaring flight elements and difficult floor routine, Gabby edged out Viktoria Komova to become Olympic champion.

And Vika. Oh Vika. Ever since her rocket to fame at 2010 YOG, she was hyped to become the next great Russian star. With amazing toepoint, gorgeous lines and huge difficulty, she seemed set to fulfill her destiny when she came first in qualifications. However, despite a strong performance including a near-perfect floor routine, she fell short of gold by just a few tenths. Curses to those extra steps she took on her vault!!

9. Aly Raisman (USA)—2016 Olympics (6 votes) all routines YES I CRY WHEN I WATCH HER FLOOR, WHAT OF IT.

10. Tang Xijing (CHN)—2019 Worlds (2 votes) all routines After spectacularly choking in qualifying and getting 2 per’d out of the AA final, Tang Xijing got a second chance when she was substituted for her teammate Liu Tingting, and took full advantage by becoming the first Chinese AA medalist since Yao Jinnan in 2011, and matching the highest result achieved by Jiang Yuyuan in 2010.

i think there's just. something about how he can be so clown and witty and ready to make people laugh, but also sometimes so quiet and into his own mind? so scorpio-man-like?, also how careless sometimes and mayb a bit brash, and his jokes fell flat, but he is also so thoughtful in his own way, how he throws his affection at people and yet can be so shy when receiving it? how much he grew since they debuted, how much he still is and how conscious he is in trying to grow and get comfortable !! idk. something about all this and how it makes him him and how we are opposites but yet sometimes i feel we are the same... man what is all of this sjwbbdbdj i just really like him 🤧

my favourite look on yuta! aaah this is a difficult one mainly bc i always think he looks good ejhebdb i do really like and associate yuta to pink/purple, so regular era has a reserved spot in my heart eheh but! i feel like in 2019/2020 he really started and experimenting with his image, and doing what he wanted, and we got all his iconic red hair and long hair and piercing that <3 and idk i just saw him more happy and sure of himself and <3 jsjsnsnjs (except kick it era, he looked so exceptional but i feel like something was going on behind and :/ kwbsbsjsj idk what was with sm but he deserved better yikes)

okay i don't think i am great at fashion actually sjebsjsj so i don't think i would be that great of a stylist lol i DO enjoy all of nct's most hated looks bc they were so fun and not-boring !! so i would LOVE to see them get back on something unique and particular and different (i feel like, kick it and punch styling were good, but? it lacks something? compared to before?) but also my forever dream that will never get true is the yutae unit with a rock concept (sooo original dbbdbdnd) and a japanese track, so i think it would be awesome to see something inspired from jpn street style also! (which. can mean nothing and all I guess but there's still a certain style in my eyes?) also would love to bring back hairstyles like tvxq of the beginning (see: hug mv) oh! and I'd love if they experimented more with yuta's make up too!! nct have v good eye makeup artists, it would be awesome if they went all out some day!!

and also i'm just tired in general of bighit milking the hyyh / bts universe for do long. like. it was already too much for me when they included hyyh in the jpn ver of the bst mv, which just made no sense whatsoever nd turned tae's character in some kind of evil murderous 'maniac'. then bighit kept releasing 'the notes' that came with later albums and then released all of those in books or bundles or w/e, then ages later there was the manhwa and while i didn't enjoy it a lot, it at least made more sense about the plot and was actually canon. but it should've just ended there or long before that lmfao. they keep draggging this on for so long that to me it feels as ridiculous as them forcing bts to perform in their debut era outfits like. hyyh was great and a very inspiring and emotional story, and i still think I NEED U is their most iconic turning point in their career, but it is time to let go of the story. the story was based on (though i feel as if it is rather 'capitalized on' bc it wasn't directed by bts) their insecurities and mental health issues and they're in a much better place now, so it feels awkward to keep bringing up this past indirectly.
