My feelings on the T7S mains on T9S

Once again, my opinion. If you don’t agree, that’s fine. Just please respect mine. Not gonna argue in the comments.

Jackie - she was only on there for a few seconds yet the writers completely wrecked her character after several seasons of character development. Worse than s8 dare I say. At least she and Fez are over, thank god. But in no world would she be cheating and having an affair without guilt, especially after how devastated she was with what Kelso and Hyde did in the og series. And why would the writers even have her back with Kelso? The man who cheated on her several times and pressured her into sex.

Kelso - I liked seeing him with Jay, but I wish Betsy was there too. He wasn't too bad on there, but like him being married to Jackie? Not being friends with Fez anymore? It's just ridiculous to me. Also the advice he gave to Jay was very pre Brooke-Kelso of him. Like there was no valid reason why Brooke/Kelso couldn't have been endgame. Even Mila thought K/B should've been endgame and Shannon didn't have those controversies, so what excuse is there? That M/A were married irl? THE ACTORS ARE NOT THEIR CHARACTERS!

Hyde - They basically acted like he didn't exist. Like they could've just hired a different actor to play him and have a J/H endgame or even mention him. Even in the Cat Fight Circle, the removed him. Like why couldn't they have picked a circle without Hyde then?

Eric - I was fine with his arc. One of the few ogs I feel that the writers didn't fuck over. He got his happy ending with Donna, he has a lovely daughter. But did the writers have to have him a career in being a STAR WARS professor of all things???? Why not just have him as a history professor

Donna - No issue with her character portrayal here for the most part. Loved her bond with Leia, and E/D still had my heart. I still think there should've been a Jackie/Donna reunion instead of j*lso, but I'll take what I can get.

Fez - I liked seeing his bonds with Kitty and Red again. Him and Sherri were adorable together and I’m glad they were paired up. But the way they handled the Jackie/Fez breakup was not great. Don’t get me wrong I’m happy they broke up, but Jackie cheating on him with Kelso? Ruining their friendship?? It does explain why Fez considers Eric his best friend in the revival but still…did the writer have to ruin such an iconic friendship just for a toxic relationship. Like Fez should’ve left Jackie for Kelso, not the other way around. And Jackie should’ve ended up with Hyde or remained single.

I recently read a newer book by the same author of boyfriend material, called Something Fabulous, its about a Duke chasing down his runaway fiance and accidentally falling for her brother. its ridiculous, and hilarious and literally everyone in it is queer. More explicit than any of the others on this list, not fade to black.

First son of the United States having an affair with the Prince of England. Scandal ensues. V romantic, funny and sweet. also trump doesn't exist in this universe which is nice.

by the same author as RWRB you have One Last Stop, a bi girl moves into a (very queer) flat and starts a new life in new york only to fall for a girl who can't leave the subway. the friendship group and found family in this one has my heart. there's time travel hijinks, drag queens, and a lot of pancakes. really good trans (ftm) rep too.

if you want something more serious, All that's left in the World by Eric J Brown is a post apocalyptic story of two survivors, travelling together, and looking for hope in a broken world. Very slow burn, very complicated and dark, but oddly hopeful considering. This one's YA, they're teenagers.

I'll admit it, I'm a bit salty. A That 90s Show analysis.

After crafting my second-gen characters for two-plus years, to purposely avoid a lazy cookie-cutter rerun (but in the early 00s), I was vaguely hopeful when I first heard about That 90s Show. There were red flags I couldn't ignore, like the name Leia and the 1995 date, though. More red flags kept popping up, but the premise was solid, if only for a few necessary changes.

However, the character release back in February legitimately pissed me off. It went from having to make a few crucial tweaks for me to enjoy it (an offscreen J/H endgame, no OOC Star Wars crap, and pushing the date to 1999 for the premise to make it all IC) to having to overhaul the whole damn thing. The second-gen characters are almost. Just. Like. Their. 70s. Counterparts.

And since the story revolves around Red and Kitty and the second-gen characters, this turns everything on its head. Now, it goes from editing about 30% of the premise to editing about 70% of it. It's so lazy. Such a blatant cash grab, with barely an ounce of creativity. It's like they looked at the gang's mold, and just tweaked a few things around the edges. So it wasn't a complete copy and paste.

But still, it was obvious. Leia's Donna, Jay's Eric, Gwen's Hyde, Ozzie's Fez, Nate's Kelso, and Nikki's Jackie. They're probably going to put Jay and Leia together too (they've also put the Kelso and Jackie equivalents together, so I wouldn't be surprised), mirroring the same relationship dynamics from the show. Which also reeks of laziness and a consistent lack of creativity.

Because a good writer/creator knows how to create characters from scratch. In the case of second-gen character creators, put some of their parents' traits in a blender. Add some other interesting stuff, and boom. An all-new character, with a personality all their own.

But no. We get this crap. I think the Red and Kitty stuff, for the most part, will be fine. But the rest of it is absolute trash, that makes little to no sense.

Here comes the controversial part, dun, dun, dun...

A super long PS: No, gender swaps (in the case of Gwen) don't count as "creative." And racial changes don't count as "creative," either. Or as particularly progressive, because if representation is only skin deep and forced (since Wisconsin is hella white)? It comes off as creating a false illusion (*cough* neoliberal southern California brainrot *cough*) to push aside the reality on the ground.

So, T9S is not only creating cookie-cutter characters with little variation from the old, but they're just making skin-deep changes while plopping the gang (but with different names, and ever so slight tweaks) in the 90s. With similar adventures, most likely, but while adhering to today's sensibilities in fear of offending anyone.

But I just want complex, different characters, damn it! Not a rehashed, forcibly diverse puppet show that makes little to no sense, to fit irl circumstances, a commercialized, superficial obsession with Star Wars, and to adhere to the timeline of the creator's daughter's teenage years.

And yeah, most creators around here could write better shit in their sleep. But it'll never be broadcasted to millions of people, via a lazy reboot to conjure some surface-level nostalgia, by default.

Because creativity has been stifled in the world as of late, squeezed into the arms of a few companies that control everything and fear offending anyone (including their donors), so almost everything's the same. Old. Stale. Crap. Every week. This is why most corporate sitcoms have sucked, for at least a decade (if not more). And I'm including Netflix too, btw.

Hence, that's why I'm salty. It's like when Kim Kardashian wrecked Marilyn Monroe's "Happy Birthday" dress. Because she's rich, she can do whatever the fuck she wants. Whereas T9S is basically the same thing. Ruining something for attention, out of sheer laziness and for a desperate cash-grab, because they can.

My view of the characters isn't narrow. That's the wrong word. My view of them is specific and, in contrast to your claim, complex -- a complexity that inspired me to write over three-thousand comics, over a million words of fanfic, and countless essay (or metas) about these characters. It's a complexity That '70s Show's writers and showrunners destroyed, slowly but surely starting with the last episodes of season 5.

Characterizing as childish my lack of desire to watch a sequel series that will, likely, build on S8's canon-divergent, mypoic portrayal of T7S's characters -- as well as muddy the characters' reality with their actors' personal lives -- is a reductive, unwarrantedly hostile, and woefully misinformed take on my attitude about the prospect of That '90s Show.

You don't know what my relationship to That '70s Show is on a deeper, personal level. I'm a very private person, and I certainly wouldn't share this kind of information in public with an anon who writes me an (albeit mildly) attacking message such as yours.

That being said, the fact I've actively participated in the T7S fandom for over eleven years, co-moderate the longest-existing online forum about the show (it's twenty-two-years-old and counting), dedicated so much creativity and analysis and time as described above to T7S, happily welcomed many new active participants to the fandom, and made a ton of friends through this fandom, the show's importance to me isn't hard to guess.

My fidelity is to the characters and their internal consistency. The people in charge of T7S and T9S (save Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith) have proven over many episodes and years they do not share this same fidelity.

I'm not asking you, whoever you are, to share my trepidation. Or even to understand it. But you do have to accept it.

The only way I'd consider That '90s Show as possibly being part of canon is:

if it disavows season 8 as being a delusion or a dream, much like Community did in season 5 to the OOC season 4, which had different showrunners than the rest of the series.

If T9S lets us know the T7S characters continued on the trajectories set by their long-established characterizations, made choices based on who they actually are instead of being forced into plots and choices the characters never would have made for themselves

if the T7S characters' choices for their fictional lives aren't based on any choices the actors made for themselves IRL

if the T7S and T9S creators acknowledge to us through interviews, press, social media, etc. that S8 was mishandled and a mistake and perhaps even apologize for it

I have no reason to believe any of the above will happen, however. Season 8 proved just how little T7S's creators cared about the characters or their fans. The misogyny against Jackie in S8 is appalling. The silence about S8 these last fifteen years from the show's creators, producers, and writers -- save David Trainer (T7S's series director), who quite diplomatically stated his opinion that S8 is "an alternate reality, one of many possible futures for the characters" -- speaks volumes.

Even the choice of Leia as the name of Eric and Donna’s daughter suggests how shallowly T9S’s creators think about and understand T7S’s characters.

I'm sure plenty of T7S fans will enjoy T9S. Sounds like you expect you will, too. Wonderful! I just hope the next time you message someone anonymously (or otherwise) about, well, anything, you do so in a more respectful manner than you have me.

Darkiplier - It’s always the edgelords that happen to be the first alter ego, huh? At least this one has a personality and a complicated-but-in-a-good-way backstory. (100/10, always angry but always fancy.)

Mayor Damien - I keep forgetting that this poor boy started out as a friggin mayor. (80/10, confused but a sweetheart with the best character development in my opinion.)

Seer Celine - She can stab me with her axe and I’d say thank you. (90/10, badass with a rad axe.)

William J. Barnum/Wilford Warfstache - (William) Has no idea what personal boundaries are, but is a sweetheart. (Wilford) Now has no idea what ANY boundaries are, but is still a sweetheart. (1,000/10, he’s crazy but he’s trying.)

Actor Mark - Oh WOW this guy is an asshole. I love him. I did a whole character study of him before, I don’t think I should say anything about him here. (50/10, what a garbage boy stinkman.)

The Jim Twins - (lights match) Since the beginning of time, “Jim” was the first name ever to be given to two people who look exactly the same. (90/10, the Jims are eternal.)

King of the Squirrels - I like to think that the King just... says his name over and over again during normal conversations and everybody understands what he’s saying. (60/10, he’s been raised by squirrels and lives off of peanut butter, what do you expect?)

The Author/Host - (Author) I gotta say, his power to control whatever he writes for it to actually happen is pretty neat to think about... I just think he’s abusing it. This duality is perfect for Flynn/Eugene. They both appreciate the finer things in life, but not in entitled way, more in a “I know what’s like to go without the finer things and so I appreciate them when I have them” sort of way. Disney Princes are kind of meh. I mean we build them up to be the male ideal, but mostly they’re kind of whiny and manipulative (I’m looking at you, Prince Eric). Prince Phillip is not your average Disney Prince. He’s okay being royal, but his royalty is second to his own dreams and desires. He was born into royalty and expectations, and he doesn’t whine or complain about it, he embraces it. Both Philip and Hobi are the embodiment of competence and capability. They are strong and soft, hard and delicate. I’ve always loved they way Philip was willing to throw everything away because he fell in love. This is traditionally the woman’s role in a fairy tale, and I feel like Prince Phillip, with his visual and performative duality, is more concerned with being true to himself than being what others think he should be. Also I’d put my money on it that they’re both very talented with their swords.

GRUMPY GRUMPS that still manage to be beloved by an entire clan of rock trolls. In Suga’s case, ARMY are the rock trolls. Own it.

Masters in their respective crafts (for Suga, this is music, obvs, for Kristoff this is… ice).

Can write songs and play instruments. 

Attracts opposing personalities, who find his innate grumpy stoicism endearing (think Anna, Sven, Olaf). 

Would ride through a blizzard like a valiant, pungent, reindeer king to save you. 

Suga is no fixer-upper, but this one came easily to me. The grumpy act is a front, and really they’re just keeping their cards close to their chest and waiting for the right hand. They’re both incredibly capable. I would 100% trust both of them to help me find my magical sister in a blizzard while climbing up a mountain and running from wolves but only after I’ve earned their respect. Kristoff’s ice-mining skills remind me a lot of Suga’s ability to turn music into gold, but they’re both very humble about it, which speaks to their absolute mastery. And I know I put it in the hot take, but they both absolutely attract happy, bubbly, adoring friends and fans with their stoic personalities.

Wherever they are, whatever they are doing, whether that’s scaling the rooftops of Agrabah or training for a KPop band, they put all of their mentality and physicality into it.

Every animated Disney movie has an “I want” song. Most of the female characters get amazing “I want” moments (except for Ariel, girl needs to learn how to love herself), but men, even central characters, are often very shallow. Don’t get me wrong, Go the Distance is one of the best “I want” songs in the Disney library, but it doesn’t have half the earnestness and depth or emotionality of the One Jump Ahead Reprise. We all know that Jimin has been the most forthcoming about his struggle with accepting himself and developing his skills as an idol. I feel like no other Disney Hero captures the essence of his “I want” like Aladdin does.

This is partially about personality, but also partially about Tae’s sharp and handsome features that absolutely remind me of my weird attraction to Robin Hood. Although anyone’s physical attraction to Tae is definitely not weird because the man is a whole snack. I joke about Tae being chaotic neutral, but there’s no denying he has a deep sense of righteousness. He was willing to call Army out for the weird and sometimes hateful posts on Weverse, and 100% admire that he’s willing to stand-up to bullies. Robin Hood dons an absolutely ridiculous stork costume without blinking even if there are more dignified alternatives, because ultimately life’s about having fun and being weird, even when you’re basically starting a civil war.

This was another no-brainer. Both of these makeneas are ruled by their desire to please their elders, whether that’s Zeus and Phil or RM and Hobi. And really if young, awkward, but completely capable Hercules doesn’t remind you of baby, JK, get out of my house. They both bask in the admiration of their fans, but what’s really important to them is being accepted and loved by their close circle of friends and family. They are both incredibly loyal, almost to a fault, and were destined for greatness.

I’m not super against it or anything, but I just can’t get behind J/yle. No problem with other people shipping it, but I’m probs not gonna read a fic if that’s one of the pairings (even a background one) or like/reblog any of the art. It just feels super forced to me, and I HC Jimmy as straight.

9. Most disliked character(s)? Why?I don’t really have any :/ I like ‘em all on some level. Even the characters whose actions I dislike (eg; Bradley Biggle, Gerald), I find entertaining so I can’t really say I dislike them.
