He says nothing. The silence unnerves me, but this is a weapon I'm familiar with. My father didn't use it often, but when he did, it was so bad I almost preferred his fists.

I need to be safe. I need to have one corner of the godsforsaken city where I'm able to rest and not have to worry about a knife in my back, literal or otherwise. I need to stop hurting the people I most care about with every move I make.

I brace from sympathy or pity or some kind of self-righteous bullshit about how no child should have to defend themselves from adults. It's not how the world works, though, and I don't have time for anyone who isn't already aware of that.
