Sheoldred I'll forgive you for compleating ajani but I draw the line at resurrecting ertai that dude was lame
Oh, he was pathetic. Even the most mediocre of tools is not to be wasted, however. He saw the first Invasion firsthand and unfortunately has the experience to match. Besides, he’s loyal enough, and capable of his own miracles--like having hair greasier than the fifth sphere of Phyrexia. -S

2022: Yu Jie on Gao Ertai, Gao Ertai's 'Letter without an Address' to His Deceased Daughter
Ian Johnson’s August 2024 New Yorker interview with Gao Ertai A Chinese Memoirist’s Exile in Las Vegas inspired me to look him up. I found Yu Jie’s Radio Free Asia 2022 article about Gao Ertai which mentioned Gao’s “Letter Without an Address” after the death of his daughter. As Liao Yiwu commented, there is something special about Gao Ertai’s writing, combining both emotional intensity and a…

Boxing up “Beyond the Box” reader’s comments on the Scars Block intros.
You can find Part 1 (old frame theme decks) here, and Part 2 (new frame theme decks) here. There may be a fourth part covering the small intro packs and duel decks: we’ll see. As mentioned before in those two links, Beyond the Box was a regular precon focused column written by Jay from Ertai’s Lament. I have used some of the comments on this articles in my “Compendium” posts, for instance for…

Belbe vs. Ashiok
Magic: The Girlbossing, Round 1, Match 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut:
Belbe
Color identity: Golgari
Featured art by Igor Kieryluk
Was a factor in Ertai's corruption, chose the new Evincar, and her card produces alot of mana at the helm of my commander deck.
She was created by the Phyrexians from the corpse of Eladamri's daughter, which they only did to fuck with him. She holds the eye of Yawgmoth. She's kinda just out there to do evil shit (until she isn't anymore.)
Ashiok
Color identity: Dimir (Black center)
Featured art by Cynthia Sheppard
okay ashiok may not be a girl, but despite that ashiok is the biggest gaslighter to ever gatekeep and you can't take this away from us. ashiok will literally just go to different planes and manipulate people, sometimes for fun, sometimes for power, always for the love of the craft (manipulation). ashiok has been seen utilizing nightmare powers and theros mechanics to create a new god, putting an entire plane to sleep, and showing up at elesh norn's doorstep just to have a little fun with her worst nightmares.

I’ve been thinking about the Jedi Order and their birth cultures again, how we see such a limited scope of perspective on those 10,000 Jedi that make up the Order yet even within that limited amount, we see many examples of more than one person from the same species/culture. Shaak Ti and Ahsoka Tano.  Luminara Unduli and Barriss Offee.  Adi Gallia and Stass Allie and Katooni.  Aayla Secura and Finn Ertay.  Eeth Koth and Agen Kolar.  Yoda and Yaddle and Grogu. These Jedi are not alone in balancing their specific birth culture and their Jedi culture--and those are just the ones we see onscreen in the movies and tv shows!  There’s a ton more that we never see because they’re not the focus of the main plot, but given the diversity we see constantly in the Order, they have to be there. And it’s interesting to me that, of all the examples, the ones that seem to put the most importance on their birth cultures are Luminara and Barriss, the clothing, the tattoos, the prayer statue--and that’s the pairing where the Jedi put them together, the two Mirialan Jedi are the ones who would want that sacred master&student bond in their lives, so that’s what the Jedi do. No Jedi is alone in their connections to their birth culture and each of them decides how much they want to pursue it, but the on-screen evidence points to that Jedi do make space for that and put value on those connections and culture.

opinions on squee's storyline?
Not a fan of how a lot of Squee's stories are written, along with a good portion of the goblin humor written into the game.
A lot of it is punching down and mocking Squee and other goblins for being "stupid" and "weird" and "different". Other people are written as finding him annoying and idiotic because... He eats insects? He doesn't understand what nobody explains to him?
When he does something useful, it's portrayed as baffling and an accident and never brought up again. He was possibly the best marksman on the Weatherlight, but that was found by accident and he didn't get a permanent position there, he was just called "maybe you're not useless after all" once. Why even have him around in the first place on the ship, if everyone hates him so much and finds him so stupid and useless and bothersome?
Squee (and goblins in general) are constantly berated and belittled, and the story seems to encourage and reward that behavior, never interrogating it. They die horribly and it's a punchline. So much so that Squee was made immortal just to become a reusable punchline.
His modern appearances are a bit better, his story during Dominaria United actually showed a bit more of what he could do, but still carried some of these issues through. He's a hero of the first Invasion, one of the last surviving members of the legendary Weatherlight's crew during it, and one of Karn's friend not quite as old as Jhoira, but definitely from farther back than Venser. He should have more importance than a local punchline somewhere in Shiv that semi-accidentally defeats Ertai (again).
His Multiverse Legend card call him a symbol. I hope for him that he's become one. After everything he's taken, he more than deserves it, and I hope in this last life of his, he can be more than a punchline.
Because up until now, I don't find it funny, I find it sad. For him and other goblins, I hope your lives and deaths stop being treated as jokes because you're different.
