ummm baby. her name is tanya i don’t remember exactly she was born in the tl in my head but . she was a infant during new leaf and 6(?) around new horizons ( i know thats not exactly right with how time works but whatever 💔) she’s a bit of a carbon copy of tom but she has a few of my features ( nose, hair type ) she has a bit of a mean mug and a thousand yard stare but don’t worry she’s just like that . that’s just how she is 😭

She loves bugs and sea creatures and she loves catching them and going to the museum. type of lil girl to keep frogs in her pocket and tell you to open ur hand and she’ll put a cool rock in it . i loved the idea that t.immy and t.ommy were really into bugs esp tarantulas so they love helping her catch stuff and teaching them all the things they learned from b.lathers. speaking of b.lathers im kinda in the same boat as him bc I’m insanely freaked out by bugs and crabs but I always want to listen to they have to say!! i am just fighting to stay conscious when they put a spider in my hand 😭😭

tom doesn’t mind bugs he’s handled them before they don’t scare him but he knows im terrified of them . he had to pull the kids aside and a couple times and he like “don’t scare your father too bad with the little creatures you get, don’t want him to pass out, hm?” 😭😭

Mrs. Villaumbrosia cleaning out the beach house and just sending all Lilith’s notebooks to her professional address which Lilith is used to and not bothered by except there’s a graduate assistant who goes through all of it and digitizes all the data Lilith has kept since she was, what, 7? when she started really overcoming her writing difficulties. The GA compiles everything Lilith has; esp. roughly two decades of lumpfish data and emails Lilith a copy to approve for publication. Lilith’s only edit is to add Michael as a coauthor.

It starts with dozens of emails from her overeager grad student, taglines full of exclamation points, all caps, conga lines of commas ,,,,,,,LUMPFISH!!!!

Her mother sends it over in an old orange crate she found in the basement, and Lilith would have felt her hands shake if it had been her - and not Michael - who cracked the lid. If she saw how neatly her mother packed each notebook, adding wads of fabric to stop them from falling over.

Inside, also, are her father’s binoculars in their green leather case; old film and videotapes; an adult’s snorkeling mask that’s been cannibalized to fit a child’s head.

One of her old hoodies for stuffing, with a picture of a cartoon crab on the front. Tourist rubbish, given to her by a stall owner who saw her walking up off the beach in a t-shirt and shorts at the advent of a storm, shuddering from the chill and drenched in saltwater. He handed it to her, along with a can of Coca Cola he’d been saving to have with a cigarette after closing up the stall.

The notebooks are held shut with rubber bands so none of the loose pages escape. Her mother would have done this by hand.

But it’s not Lilith who finds this silent “i love you” hidden in an old crate, specially couriered from their old beach house. It’s her grad student, but the sight does at least arrest him.

(and Lilith won’t know this for another decade, but her mother was cleaning up the house to sell it. instead she puts it in Lilith's name. just… gives it to her, slots the keys into an envelope: to be delivered upon my death)

Michael describes how he shook sand out of some of the notebooks, the smell of the ocean dried into the pages when he cracked the spines again to sift through a summertime of drawings.

They’re precise, for the most part. Practical, with neatly described dimensions, notation in a scrunched-up hand because writing hurt, but even then it was impossible not to do it. She had to record what she saw underneath the water.

Sea urchins chewing through the holdfasts at the bottom of kelp, their bodies so bright with the water fleshing down past the moving canopy. Lilith, diving to the seafloor to watch them, armed with the ruler from her father’s old geometry set. Lilith, finding their fivefold symmetry, noting the length of each spine and gently prizing their tube feet from the rocks to carry one of them ashore.

And Michael is like her so he doesn’t balk when she describes slotting her penknife into its shell, little notes on how the spines still moved, and for how long. Observing them down on the sea bed and noting in a scrawl surrounded by water droplets “spines used for locomotion?”

There are drawings of her octopus friend. One, from memory, of her wrapped around Lilith’s arm, trailing her suckers up towards the elbow joint. She finds, scrunched in against this drawing, an almost indecipherable note that Michael mistook for a child’s attempt at an artist’s signature. But it’s not that - when she was eight she never dreamed that anyone would read her notes, or care as much as she did about the ocean. There, in tiny writing, she finds a note (to herself, perhaps?) that reads “me and Octi in july. it was warm.”

It’s a charter of one small stretch of coastline, every species hunted down and documented. She only dissected a few of them, just crabs and sea urchins, comb jellies and sea sponges and, once, a dead pyjama shark.

The others she only observed, diving until she was dizzy and only for as long as a breath could hold her.

Michael sends her the proof, and it’s beautiful. her coloured sketches and her simpler ones arrayed around the sections of commentary she sent him in return emails, over months and months and months. Next to that, her childish observations - crude science, but some of it astounds her. It’s almost poetry, or maybe it only seems like it, to her.

Because she lived it, lungs aching in the aching depth, watching the kelp sway and cast shadows. An octopus wrapped around her arm, following the span and clench of her fist with its little arms, watching the waves crash overhead but sitting calm in the drag of the undertow. It was the only peaceful place in the entire world, back then.

Lilith has found another one since then.

The proof copy of the book arrives festooned in bright customs stamps, stickers haphazard on the cardboard. Lilith scatters packing peanuts across her office floor when she opens it, makes a mental note to pick them up before paprika tries to eat them. The cover is what she expects, but it steals her breath. It’s the drawing of her octopus, tangled around the thinness of Lilith’s seven-year old arm. She can almost feel the water moving around her, the pressure of the suckers on her skin.

Camila finds her staring at it, coming gently into the room with a thermos of soup and half a plastic-wrapped loaf of bread under one arm. Hearing her, Lilith looks up, and there are tears in her eyes.

She blinks, slow, and Camila is there, leaning down to take Lilith's jaw in her hands, thumb swooping over her cheeks.

“It's here,” Lilith mumbles, inarticulate in the presence of her own tears.

And she can’t explain it, really.

Only that she was happy, back then. Curled up in her crab hoodie with her notebook, sketching the sea stacks that you can spot from on top of the cliffs. Her coloured pencils scattered in the sand as she switched between them, trying to capture the deep green of the kelp suffused in sunlight, the red trail of innards from the pyjama shark she hauled up onto the sand. Sea urchins and the quiet rustling of their spines. Jellyfish in their medusa-phase trailing their tentacles.

The peace of floating with them, of following fish and watching sessile creatures creep over the seabed. It was her home, her safest and most sacred place.

But she was also alone, and it was also lonely. Walking home to her unlatched window, she’d sneak down to steal crackers and cheese from the pantry, or cold cuts of ham from the refrigerator - bathed in that cold glow in her bare feet, hands covered in tiny punctures from handling sea urchins without care. She used to pour alcohol-based hand sanitizer over them in the kitchen sink, wincing, and then find the aftertaste of it on the crackers and the cheese.

“I just…” she leans into Camila's touch. “I miss being there, and I don't.”

Camila nods - and Lilith thinks she does understand, growing up poor, hungry, looking after her little brother when the money ran out mid-week.

She leans down, and Lilith rises to meet her, feeling for an instant like she’s back home, surging up towards the air and the light.

Cam kisses her, and Lilith lets her eyes flutter closed because this is it. Her second, sacred, peaceful place. And maybe she’s a fool for finding it in Camila's mouth, but Lilith is a lover of short-lived creatures.

And this one, at least, can also love her back.

Four is like? 3'8, and he's 20 yo but most people don't believe him. He's a trans boy, and most of the colors are too besides vio, who I think is either genderfluid or pangender, uses all pronouns. Four is bisexual but leans towards guys, though he loves his Zelda.

Legend is 4'10, 17 yo, born december 14th at midnight. he is trans, any pronouns, and bisexual.

Ravio is same height and age as Legend, and they're both born on the same day but ravio was born at noon. This really bothers Legend, he wants his own birthday. Ravi loves it.

Times eyes are more gray than blue

Sky 9 times out of 10 has no clue whats going on. Stupid and confused, and its perfect.

Twilight has slept as a wolf so often that it's practically natural for him, he really prefers it. Also, he takes all of his nightwatch shifts as a wolf.

Wild will teach literally anyone about edible flora and mushrooms and such, and foraging around hyrule, if only they would listen. Sometimes talks random animals ears off about his favorite flavor combos. Sky loves to listen and ask questions.

Hyrule will hand his favorite people random stuff as "gifts" like feathers, flowers, rocks, dead bugs (he's obsessed with bugs, he loves them so so much and they're all his friends) his favorite animal is a bumblebee

A classic. The very first iteration of Youkaimatsu. Kind of hard to find since it was a bonus poster from the character book, so unless you were actively looking for the book, you wouldn’t find this.

Osomatsu - Kitsune (unknown how many tails he has but is often depicted in fan artworks as 6 or 9, 9 meaning strongest/wisest a kitsune has been, Spirit Fox)

Most popular Youkaimatsu set, this baby could get milked for miles, but for some reason isn’t. Has a lot of variants (Awakened, Darkness, Snow, Sakura and Hyakki Yagyou) and connected to a lot of other sets: Denki Mystery, Colorless Overalls, Mononoke and a bunch of others. She is the top DOGG set.

Osomatsu - Shuten-Douji (Oni Leader with a penchance for Sake, literally carrying a big ass bottle of it on his back, since he is the leader of the sextuplets and the one seen drinking beer the most)

Karamatsu - Aoandon (Summoned after 100 supernatural stories are told. Originated from the blue (ao) paper lanterns (andon) that were sometimes used to give a chilling atmosphere)

Choromatsu - Daitengu (Great Tengu, Tengus were theorized to be ascended souls, but also has its origins in a Dog Beast that looked like a comet. For some reason Dog Beast turned into Bird Man. The bird man’s beak is often anthropomorphized into long noses. Tells humanity to behave by throwing invisible stones at them)

Ichimatsu - Nine-tailed Kitsune (So wise. So powerful)

Jyushimatsu - Inugami (Dog God that possesses people)

A BUNCH OF PEOPLE REMINDED ME AND HOW COULD I FORGET THE BEST YOUKAI EVER. Osoma baby,,,, I’m so sorry..... Srsly, this skit was so good, I hope they make more skits like this where they make entirely new characters out of the framework of the sextuplets.

Osoma - A Zashiki-warashi, child spirits who live in store rooms or extra rooms, they died buried in their homes. Pranksters but meeting one is said to bring good fortunes to families. Osoma gets crossovered a lot with the other Youkai sets in JP fanart. A popular pairing is Dodomeki Chorosuke (from Denki Mystery) and Osoma also Kitsune Osomatsu (from the poster) and Osoma.

Choroe - Not necessarily a youkai, in fact in the episode she’s presented as just a regular human. But is theorized often to be a Yama-uba. An old woman banished to the mountains. She provides shelter to weary travelers (in the myth it’s just a humble shelter but you know. an inn is also considered a shelter) before eating them. In one story she eats the recently birthed baby of a woman who had to give birth in the mountains. 

Mononoke from Hesokuri Wars (May 2019)

Technically they are all the same type of being, Mononoke, but they look different from each other. Mononoke can posses individuals and cause suffereing and even death. And technically they aren’t Youkais but Onryos, vengeful spirits. But Onryos can also be used to refer to youkais and truthfully I just wanna include this set cause their designs are so cool looking. This set’s attacks contain glimpses of units of other sets.

Thank you @gradelstuff​ for telling me about this! Ayakashi are Youkai that appear above nearby bodies of water. Although the youkais they’re dressed up as (or are?) aren’t really what you would call ayakashi? Although it’s cafe themed, it isn’t actually from a cafe collaboration. These designs are merchandise meant to be won through lottery. So if say you really love Kara and Choro’s designs (I do), then tough luck buddy!

Osomatsu - Oni

Karamatsu - Now you may think he’s Dodomeki since he’s covered with eyes, but turns out there are two other eye-relateed youkai! Mokumokuren is a youkai phenomenon where eyes appear from torn paper walls and tatami floors, initially i thought this was it given the checkered pattern he was wearing. But he might actually be a Hyakume, a youkai covered head to toe in yellow eyes specifically. Underneath those eyes is a body of flesh roughly in the shape of a man. This Youkai isn’t particularly malicious, only detaching one of it’s many eyes to follow you and survey you for criminal activiy. He might also be a BackBeard, a youkai allegedly from the US, err that would make him a cryptid I guess? A Backbeard is often characterized as a shadow with a Yellow eye with a red iris in the center. Note: Backbeard’s true origins are not known as there doesn’t seem to be any cryprid called a Backbeard, it first entered the Japanese public eye as an antogonist in the show Gegege no Kitaro. Although ever since then this “yokai” has appeared in other media and games in Japan.

Choromatsu - He isn’t exactly dressed as it (only themed as it) but the youkai he represents is the one he’s holding, a Kasa-obake, One of my favorite youkais and it’s literally iconic. Thought to be a Tsukomogami, an object that gains a spirit after it turns 100 years old.

Ichimatsu - Edit: I’m not sure but he might be a Kuchisake-Onna. In the description attached to his teaser, it makes mention of specifically his wide smile, his dos dagger and his beautiful shirt. A kuchisake onna is a yokai that wanders in the street covering her face with a mask (skull mask for ichi) and a sharp object (his dos dagger). TW GORE DESCRIPTION: She asks you if you think she’s attractive and depending on your answer she muders you with her scissors, plunging it into you OR she takes off her mask showing her wide smile, her mouth slit at the corners to her ears and asks “how about now?” and depending on your reaction she cuts you in half with her sharp object OR she slits the corners of your mouth to look like hers. END DESCRIPTION. Ichi has the mask, sharp object, wide smile and “attractiveness”. Obviously it would be inappropriate to portray ichi in the same fashion as the kuchisake onna so he was probably given the internal organ tattoos to represent the gory yokai. (internal organs usually = gore in japan). This is speculah and he might be another youkai but this is all i can think of rn.

Jyushimatsu - sailor themed Jiangshi. Jiangshi are basically Zombies originally from Chinese culture. They hop around, and crave for life force. this little jyushimatsu has taken to tomato juice instead. (Bonus: the zombie that osomatsu is in the zombie set in hesokuri wars is also a Jiangshi)

Todomatsu - Kitsune (sly fox)

The latest and what sparked me to make this post tbh. This set reuses the Rokurobi design from the very first Youkaimatsu iteration! Full circle yo! I like to think of this set as an addition to the original youkaimatsu, since they’re both from the primary sources.

Jyushimatsu - Rokurobi (Again)

Totoko - Amabie (mermaid with three legs? prophesized about either good harvest or an epidemic, trivia: “Amabie” trended when Covid 19 hit the world)

Hatabou - Azukiarai (a youkai that originated from the sound of something like beans being washed near a river, anyone who comes near will fall into the river)

Dayon - Nopperabou (Faceless spirits that take the form of humans. They are harmless usually, they just scare humans)

Dekapan - Kappa (Mischievous River spirits)

That should be all of them!

You can definitely see a trend (lmao), I’m looking forward to more Youkaimatsus from Osomatsu-san!

Sea glass and cool rocks and shells but as jewelry is actually something my great grandfather did and I want to try, except he put them into resin first so they were protected. Then he made them into little charms sometimes. Not rocks though. But yeah fun times, I put a few tiny shells into a couple and they were really cute :)

Also yes I have looked into getting a hermit crab from a pet store, I don't know of any lakes or rivers nearby that have crabs, but I'm still not sure I will and idk if I'll have space for a habitat the right size anyway :/

Aw man, I guess pet crabs aren't the easiest to come by :< but if you worry about space, you could look up a species that is smol - e.g. a red claw, or Thai devil, etc., crabs which can be comfy in smol 5-10 gallon tanks - so you'll be able to fit a pet in your space :>

1) swamps are wildlife hotspots and support a ton of large vertebrates, actually! europe’s wetlands are home to dozens of different large bird species (& if anyone thinks crabs can’t catch birds i am sorry to inform you they very much can (warning: seabird death)) and Poland’s Biebrza Marshes particularly have moose, beaver, wild boar, deer, and more. not even to mention the fishes! plenty of bones to go around in a swamp.

also, i would love to see a monster tangle with a moose tbh

2) they don’t necessarily have to eat a lot to build a shell—it’s hard to say the exact dietary requirements for a creature we don’t even have size estimates for, but the molting process for terrestrial crustaceans begins with them reabsorbing part of the old shell and it ends with them eating what’s left of the old exoskeleton to reuse as many of the building blocks as they can. so they only need to take in enough calcium to account for the increase in size. add the fact that calcium makes up only around 20-30% of the exoskeleton usually, the rest being chitin and protein, and overall it’s really not that much calcium, relative to the size of the creature.

3) crustaceans already use aragonite and lime in their shells! aragonite is the most common crystalline form of calcium carbonate, and chalk/limestone are the other most common crystalline form, calcite! (granted, crustaceans tend to use the amorphous forms of CaCO3 more than the crystalline forms, but aragonite & calcite are components, esp. in their claws. also most of them can take in one form and change it to another if they need to.) snails and crustaceans both showed up in the ocean during the cambrian period and they’ve been ripping off each other’s shell-building methods ever since— terrestrial snails also have to get their calcium carbonate from their diet just like terrestrial crustaceans. granted, snails don’t tend to be osteophages (probably on account of not usually being predators of birds or mammals): they just eat rocks and dirt and like, bird eggs sometimes. ilyocorisae could also get calcium from eating rocks; many crustaceans, even predatory ones, filter a ton of gravel etc. through their mouths, via which they can get various minerals. this would probably be way less efficient but they could do it. i just think if they’re already bringing down large prey like humans they might as well eat the bones!

Okay so let’s start with these: Billy and Deirdre O’Reilly [Most of these are expanding on the family tree of Dexter’s Lab characters, Dexter’s mother has the most canon relatives and info so I started there first - p much all this info is me just making stuff up even if the characters have names mentioned on the show]

This was me sketching them around when they got married in the 50′s and they were young, but both of them looked young for their ages (esp back in the day when people either looked like babies or middle aged right when they turned 18) Billy was from Galway originally and met Deirdre one really windy day at the beach. He was going to collect some crab pots for his dad before they got washed away in the storm. She was sitting on a rock shivering and just staring into the sea blankly in the lashing rain, only wearing a light summer dress and no shoes - when Billy asked her what the matter was, she said she lost her coat, she looked everywhere and couldn’t find it and that it was probably eaten by something by now. She seemed to be in some sort of shock, and when he asked her where her family were, she replied that they were all gone and started crying again, so he wrapped his jacket around her then he brought her back to the village to get her some help.  She was treated for hypothermia and recovered to as well as she was gonna be, but her baseline was always p sickly as long as Billy knew her. She would always avoid talking about her past and where she came from, because she would usually start crying thinking about her family, so Billy didn’t push the matter too hard. She was always getting colds and flus etc, but everyone fell for her charm and gentleness, her vivid imagination and skill for telling stories - especially Billy. She fell for his sunny optimism, ability to keep going no matter what life threw at him, and willingness to help out others. A few years after marrying they emigrate to the US because... well the economy was terrible but Billy was offered a place in prestigious scientific investigation team, with more money than they could imagine. Billy's name technically was originally Liam but he translated it coming to the US because people had trouble with it and he wanted to integrate more smoothly. At first people had trouble understanding him, so he and a friend from the lab would watch old movies at cheap matinee showings at the local cinema and practice talking like the people on the screen to lose their accents faster. This meant for a while he talked like a Newsie, and was often mistaken for a newsie due to his baby face and short stature  Deirdre had trouble mingling in the local area due to her health deteriorating - something about the dry weather really didn’t agree with her especially in winter, but she always perked up a little when the sun came out and she could bring the kids to the beach.   They had three kids who are these ginger trio here (them in the 80′s): 

Róisín, Dearbhla and Fergal (but more on them another post) Deirdre died when Fergal was a baby, she caught a viral infection in the hospital and her immune system was just too weak to fight it off, but the family always remembers her dearly and has pictures up of her. The kids don’t know much about her side of the family though, and later Fergal goes to research it. When she passed away the kids were babysat initially by their paternal grandmother (tiny, scary) who came over to visit while things settled down, and later they would go after school to some neighbour houses, or for overnight stays they’d go to second-cousins of Billy’s who lived a few towns over who also had kids of similar ages. Around the lab, Billy got promoted quickly - he is extremely talented but has one major issue, he is very, very clumsy. Deirdre wouldn’t allow him to cook because he would burn everything, even just stirring batter somehow it’d catch on a nearby open flame. He forgets what he’s doing mid-task and drops things, or forgets his surroundings and whacks into a table, knocks into a piece of equipment etc. This resulted in his teammates being on high alert for things falling, dropping and so on - eventually when he was a supervisor he had to stand behind a pane of glass and give orders while the lab assistants actually touched the tools. Billy lives to be super old and is even smaller, some of his kids live locally and visit him often with grandkids etc. He still loves to tinker with machinery and can mcguyver household objects, and tends to tell really rambling stories that the grandkids can’t follow (lots of names of people they’ve never met, from places they’ve never been) but he’s still very sharp.

Who is your bias and why do you like them? (Go crazy!) ok i’m really going to go crazy, this is gna be a paean! i fell in love w jaehwan bc of his aesthetics so first off i need to say that he is the most handsome, beautiful person i’ve ever seen. i love his nose (before and after the surgery) and his eyes are perfect and i love his skin esp when it’s make-up free, and his hair is so soft and pretty, and his jawline is nice but i rly love when he looks down and its soft. i also love his body like ik he has a tumultuous relationship with it but i love it as long as he loves it like no exercise or lack thereof could change how much i appreciate it. his journey to self-love is also so redoubtable like im so proud of his growth and self confidence and i hope he did it for himself!! okay though his personality is also a huge part of why i love him, he’s so unbelievably funny and it’s a genuine, on the spot kind of humor that works on building relationships and forming bonds rather than being idk derivative or virulent like its a salubrious kind of humor and i appreciate it so much. he loves to smile and he has a gorgeous smile and most importantly he wants other ppl to smile and i love him for it. he’s also so full of love like he loves attention and affection and being wanted and making sure others are wanted, he has such a genuine capacity for appreciation and i love him for it. he’s also unbelievably talented like he’s out here doing musicals and hectic schedules and he’s so successful and i couldn’t be prouder, not only is his talent very latent but he works so hard and accomplishes so much im in awe. i also have never been attracted to someone who lacks drive so obviously jaehwan is a motivated person and i love him for it, he has plans to succeed and do well and he follows through god bless him for it. also i adore his being gregarious like he makes friends so easily and maintains relationships so well and fosters healthy bonds and is very willing to tell people he loves them i adore it, it’s a model for relationships god bless him. im going to wrap this up bc i cant stop writing but i just wanted to add some small (mostly insipid) things i like: i love when he purses his lips and his dimples show, i love his eye smile, i love when he takes selfies from low angles to show his soft jawline, i love when hes tired and his voice is raspy, i love when his humor is performative and he’s the first to laugh at his own jokes, i love when he holds his hands together in prayer/thanks to fans, i love when he wears hoodies and sweatpants, i love when he wears glasses, i love when he pouts, i love when he wears his hair up showing his forehead, i love when he dances and its all wiggly and not smooth, i love when he genuinely listens to what others are saying, i love all of 2012-2013, nd i love that he’s not afraid to look stupid!!!! god i need to stop myself i could go on, message me if u ever want to talk about these things and more

What do you usually wear for winter/autumn/spring/summer? What’s your “style”? I only wear earth tones because i used to be a hipster and that’s just where i’m at. i like black skinny pants and a loose top idk my style is rly simple? i dress up sometimes but mostly college kicks my butt and i look just ok!

For your bias group, what was your favourite hair style/era for each member? for jaehwan- it’s all of 2013 (that honey color) OR during fantasy when he flipped it up. for hakyeon- it’s the closer when his forehead peaked through! for ravi- it’s absolutely bomb oml that red is killer he looked eternally good for bomb. for hyuk- honestly it’s that rock ur body blonde i loved it. for hb- EASILY it’s 2012 when he had it long and wore it in ponytails with wisps out in the front that was such a look god i love 2012-2013 for many reasons. for leo- during lr when he did that wavy middle part!!

How did you ““discover”“ kpop and how did you discover vixx? on august 25th 2016 a picture came on my dash (my dashboard was 1000% kpop free it was a miracle it was there) of jaehwan from august 20th, that iconic pic of him in the pale pink shirt handing out soda. at that point i was immediately into vixx. i dnt rly follow any other groups so thats that! my friend tess helped me learn all of vixx’s names she made me a powerpoint bless her heart!

What does your phone case look like? it’s clear bc my phone is rose gold and i love seeing the pink!!

....this is such hard question for me, a ocean gay who is very into space atm
