honestly the funniest gideon to me might be immediately post-show. where hes fresh out of jail on parole and trying to be a better person. my headcanon is they commuted his sentence to a mixture of therapy and community service (they uh. had no choice after the decision to both ignore weirdmageddon and also the prison got destroyed) and he accepted this in his attempt to Be Nicer

but also it means hes walking around town like this for a while

Animal: Deer

FACE/HEAD

the lower part of his face/head is a little narrower than the upper part to try and match the head shape of a deer

^^^ same reason for his nose and mouth being lower on his face

that being said, this is a bit of a wonky head shape so I had his hair and beard even out his silhouette a little

his half mustache(?) is meant to look like the lil markings deer typically have around their nose

I gave him some cornrows in the shape of antlers! They're bleached but not toned because I thought the brassier color looked a bit closer to actual antlers (but might mess with them being lighter)

his facial cues are a bit different! He usually only moves one part of his face at a time (so Just his eyes or Just his eyebrows or Just his mouth). His pupils are where most of his expression comes from

similar thing with his ears! Except with his ears being expressive, I thought it would be fun to give him a series of "how?? are you doing that??" traits that are subtle, but definitely there. Most people can't consciously move their ears, but in an animated or cartoonish setting it's not something you notice right away

BODY TYPE

smaller torso, slightly wider abdomen. I wanted him to have smaller limbs in comparison to his body (again for that deer imagery) so him having a liiiittle bit of a tummy hopefully accomplishes this

his joints are a little more exaggerated on his knees, wrists, and ankles (but this isn't seen that often)

much smaller hands in comparison to other characters to try and match hoof proportions

does have a bit of a longer neck but this isn't seen as much

CLOTHES

Business casual except it's been shifted slightly to the left so it's odd, but not off-putting. On paper he has the most normal outfit of the people around him, but he's done it in the most confusing way possible

his button-up has these really poofy sleeves that don't match the size of the shirt so it doesn't bunch up under his vest like you'd expect it to

one of his socks is folded down?? This is something he intentionally did????

he has capris and the zipper? fly? is off-center

his jeans also don't actually have pockets, it's the fake pockets that a lot of women's jeans have

his shoes are shaped in a way that he can do pointe- was originally just going to have him walk on his toes (because hooves are technically toes) but I think this is funnier because when and why did he learn this and how is he able to do it so casually

also at first glance he's wearing dress shoes but they're closer to sandals

his watch isn't a watch at all, it's a compass with clock markings (I may or may not have pulled this from one piece). Someone asks him for directions and he checks the time or they ask for the time and he checks his watch and shrugs

Today was the last day of the youngling centre and the first day of summer vacation. Although according to the Captain and his second in command it's the Galactic Solar Solstice. But Kim and Max preferred to call it summer.

Both humans walked around the centre saying goodbye and farewell to the younglings. Many of whom gave hugs or small gifts as a sign of thanks or respect in their respective culture and planet.

All but two children who stood away from the others. Looking not as happy as the others.

"Hey. Look." Max nudged his friend to the two kids.

"Ah...Sam and Dan." together the two walked towards them.

"Where's Kim and Max?"

"They're over there."

"What are they doing?"

"I think they're checking on Sam and Dan."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"Look they're hugging. Maybe they're just sad that we won't see them for a long time."

"Probably. Lets play!"

"Teacher?"

"Yes Emira?"

"Why did you hug Sam and Danny longer than any of us?"

"Oh...because this is probably the last time I'll see them."

"Why??"

"Sam and Dan are leaving. They're going to a new school. One that's on Earth and we live in different parts of Earth so this is probably the last I'll see them."

"But your only supposed to have one teacher! They can't just leave!"

"Humans are different. We don't have one teacher all our school life. We have different teachers and can change schools."

"Even if you really like your teacher?"

"Even if you really like your teacher."

"Even if you really like your friends and classmates?"

"Even if you really like your friends and classmates. It's not always easy."

They stand in silence. Emira's feathers ruffling as she thinks.

"That must be sad." she finally says.

"It is. Sam and Dan tried to convince us to go work at the new school they'll be going to. They were pretty sad today too but we told them to remember the good memories we have-"

"No I mean for teachers."

"..."

"I know they were the first ones here. They love you a lot, Danny even called you both Mom and Dad before. And I know you both love them."

"...Your quite observant Emira. You know what that means?"

"I'm good at noticing things."

"Yeah. I don't have siblings like Kim and I'm actually not that much older than Sam. I'm the same age as their oldest brother...and to be honest they sometimes felt like my younger brothers."

"So you're going to miss them a lot?"

"Yes. Kim has done this before but this is my first time. Kinda sucks that its with kids I've known for over 3 years..."

"Do you want a hug?"

He nodded and the little avian hugged him.

"Max!"

"Hey Kim."

"I got something for you."

"Thanks...but my birthday isn't till next week?"

"Not from me, from Sam and Dan." she handed him the wrapped up gift.

He slowly opened it. It was light, like a feather, and was the size of a picture frame. It was a black screen.

"What is it?"

"Tap the screen."

He did and the screen lit up. Dozens of holographic pictures shot out from it. Most were from class field trips and events but were zoomed in on him and the two brothers. Some he doesn't remember Kim taking but he remembers the time the place.

"I got one too. It started out as a gift for the boys so they could remember us but then they and their parents wanted to return the favor so they made an extra two for us. Some of these are from the parents." she explained smiling at the biggest picture of the boys holding a sign saying 'Thank you for the memories, love Samuel and Daniel'

"..."

"I know I don't show it but I'm gonna miss them too. It does get easier with each time but you never stop missing the kid. Remember the kid I told you about, Penny?"

"The girl who gave you 3 stitches?"

"She was my first goodbye. She was at the preschool I first started at. Sweet, kind, a little ankle biter, but I really liked her. I had known her for 3 years when she left."

"...I'm really gonna miss them." he sighs, slumping towards his friend. She holds him in a side hug.

"I know buddy, me too...me too" they looked at the pictures in silence and if one of them let a tear fall then that was nobodies business but their own.

so your whumpee has escaped their whumper. What now? Maybe they've been rescued by friends, or are lucky enough to have access to a vehicle or other transport system. If not... They're on their own. Likely on foot. And if they're going any sort of distance, there's going to be consequences on top of everything else.

Things that will slow a character down:

- existing injuries

- poor footwear

- adrenaline crash

- moving for more than an hour without food or water (or less if they're already malnourished)

- weather

Injuries your character may develop that complicate things:

- wear and tear to joints; hips, knees, and ankles

- blisters. A seemingly minor part of life but they will make walking hell for at least a few days

- overuse injuries for legs (and back or shoulders if they're carrying any supplies)

- possible dislocations in the leg joints, especially if they have prior weakness/injury

- old wounds becoming aggravated/complicating their movement

Recovery after the initial escape:

- a very fit character could cover 20+ miles relatively quickly. (Think marathon runners.) But even if your escaping living weapon or soldier can put out that much effort for the initial burst, they'll likely be incapacitated to some degree afterwards. If they aren't able to consume calories/drink water during this, they will crash HARD. Perfect time to have them collapse just outside a remote farmstead or cabin :)

- rest, food, and water are the most important things for recovery. If they collapse without any replenishing, they'll be practically bedridden by the time they wake up. Maybe they have to keep pushing because there's no other choice, but they will be worse for the wear

- a character used to travelling long distances will recover quickly with the proper tools. A character who isn't is going to be feeling the effects of their escape for weeks afterwards, if not months. They may struggle to walk for several days afterwards, and might come out the other side with long term injuries ---maybe even permanent ones

Sorry it’s been so long y’all! I’ve been quite busy with school stuff, unfortunately, and life has generally been quite chaotic, so I don’t have any new finalized artwork at the moment. In the meantime, here are a few sketches of my updated designs for the aliens!

I am still working on updating their design, but I think I am definitely getting to a point where I’m satisfied with how they look! Hopefully I can introduce them officially soon- keep in mind that some of the stuff I wrote about them previously is probably outdated now.

the thing about having a health condition that gets worse with inactivity is that people really don't want you to buy a wheelchair. and if you get a wheelchair they only want you to get a cheap and uncomfortable one so that you're not tempted to use it too much. but what they don't understand is that it's very rarely a choice between "do this thing on foot" and "do this thing using a wheelchair". it's "do this thing using a wheelchair" or "don't do this thing bc it'll hurt too much if it's even possible at all". and the latter does not actually offer any more activity/mobility/improvement than using a chair, it just means you don't get to do stuff.

i am well aware that it would be actively detrimental to my health to use a chair all the time. which is why i'm not planning to! there are many areas of my life where the chair would be hindrance, if it were possible to use it there at all, so i've automatically got built-in non-chair activities anyway. but i am currently Not Doing a lot of things because i can't stand, and the chair allows me to do those things, and that's what it's for.
