5 hours & 6 minutes?
no wait i was right the first time: one hour

#funny#memes#technical difficulties#my additions#side note: later realized it was a problem with my ethernet cable#when i switched over to wifi it worked perfectly

My posts
Silent Hill 2 update: The good news is that the tornadoes that swept through the Midwest and Deep South missed my house. The bad news is that my wifi was so unstable for a couple of days as a result that I couldn't upload the second commentary that is completely finished oh my god just let me upload it. Like I don't want to OBTAIN A DAMN ETHERNET CABLE AND GO PLUG INTO THE BASEMENT ROUTER BUT SO HELP ME IT IS COMING TO THAT.
In the meantime, have a preview clip of James flawlessly fighting his way to Wood Side Apartments, I don't know what else to tell you.
I'm having my third pain block procedure on Wednesday, so I'm either going to be getting a lot of things done before then, or you're not going to hear a word from me for several days. It's hard to say.

I’m told the Switch version of Strive is slightly more optimized compared to the PlayStation 4 version, but since I don’t have much plans to get a Nintendo Switch, I doubt I’ll ever know for sure.
Optimally, I would appreciate a version of Strive where Survival Mode has zero load times between fights, but even Xrd struggles to load assets, so what can you do?
As for Ethernet versus WiFi, even Ethernet can be unreliable at times, so I don’t judge WiFi Warriors in online netplay unless their ping makes them teleport (and teleportation ISN’T part of their movelist!)
Honestly, the people who say Rollback is better than Delay-based Netcode just haven’t experienced a decent Delay match. Delay matches feel much more stable than Rollback.
I say so, because in Rollback is the only situation where I had a Gold Psyche Burst get turned in to a Blue Burst, and the time that happened really made me upset!
At any rate, I’m glad to see people enjoying Strive on Switch, now if only they’d make a perfect port of Guilty Gear X Plus 1.5 or something.
On a related note, Nintendo is a decidedly strange name for a game company, I don’t think I’ll ever fully understand, unless a Japanese Developer explains it to me. Family Computer Famicom I get, but what does Nintendo even MEAN AS A WORD???

internet's back!
it is indeed a lot faster! where i averaged 5-10mbps before i get 360 now!
the new router doesn't seem to work with my ancient managed switch, so no website until i get that sorted, as the new router only has two ethernet jacks. that give me one for my desktop and one for the living room desktop my dad uses.
the router does seem to support port forwarding, so hopefully i will be able to get my website running again. i started to get worried when they said i would need to download the app to change the wifi password, but it does jut have a normal web interface and i can set it to be an open network, just like before. i live far enough away from anyone else i don't have to worry about passwords.

Microsoft, you absolute fuckers. /BIG derogatory
So my laptop forced an update, I've been trying to figure out how to get around this one but nothing worked. I've spent three days trying to make it let me shut down without updating. I finally had to restart it (and the only options were to shut down With Updates) because it started freezing with 100% of the C disc and RAM, and processor getting close to 100% too. Like, freezing so badly I get the crash pop-up that says something to the effect of "Microsoft Windows has stopped working". Yes, it says WINDOWS CRASHED.
I put my internet connection on metered YEARS ago to avoid this. Yes, I changed it to metered when I started using the Ethernet instead of WiFi. Yes, I set it to metered when we changed the network name/password.
But it apparently downloaded the update anyway. And gave me 3 days before it started trying to force me to update on shutdown.
I figured, I could let it run the update, and then roll it back, right?
WRONG!
I had it set to create a system restore point weekly, but apparently that didn't happen! Not even fucking ONCE!
I literally JUST installed the updates last night but it's telling me it did it over 10 days ago. Even my 3 days of stalling isn't 10 days ago.
They apparently put Copilot on Windows 10 now and we aaaaall know how I feel about AI.
Also my computer now takes a full 10 minutes after login to be USEABLE (typing this on my phone), so that's great. /s When it does become useable, the disk is constantly at 90% or higher. And I don't know why because the RAM is only at 50%. (Probably something to do with the DOZENS of "system host" processes in Task Manager now.)
The only sole singular Good Thing about this update is that they let you UNINSTALL copilot. u`_u
So I disabled the Windows Update service this time. I know ~important security updates~ happen, but I'd like to retain what little power of choice Microsoft is leaving us with.
When this laptop dies, I'm switching to Linux.
I'm so fucking done.

Ok I'm gonna ask this now before I come across this again in the future.
Does anyone on Tumblr know what on earth this is? The first time this happened I noticed the option to connect to any wifi is not available, the wifi button is completely gone.
I needed an ethernet cable to do anything that requires wifi.
My school's IT couldn't help me, and afterwards un-installing/re-installing the drive didn't help either. They recommended to replace one of my cards (sorry I don't remember which) with an older version, but I said I'll think about it.
Then it fixed itself later when turning it on again, after giving me 5 hours of anxiety.
I think the issue is something with the wifi card, because I started to tilt my laptop at a different angle after switching the side that I plug my mouse in the opposite slot.
I just want some clarity and knowledge cause that put me on edge for the last few months of the semester. I have zero knowledge on this stuff.
It's a MSI laptop running windows 11.
#I scrolled through many reddit posts and they did not help.#windows#tech support#tech help#it support#vio.txt

We added Frankenputer to the household . Frank is a combo of free PC parts we got as a pity gift from the repair shop guy that couldn't fix Spouse's PC.
Frank has half his parts from 2011, the other half from 2020. He is so old he don't have wifi ...
which prompted me to ethernet wire the entire house this past week, plus sort out the Ruckus switch in the closet.
Frank is the backup computer; I went ahead and got another more up-to-date PC for me and gave Spouse my hotrod. However, if either breaks down, at least we won't be at ends as we were without Frank. Plus, Frank is risk free -- he's worth $12 of DDR3 RAM right now, so if I bork him when I put in a new motherboard or processor, then no loss.

Oh I forgot another good thing! Ed fixed my computer!
The other day I noticed that my computer had switched to WiFi only and not the Ethernet connection. I tried to fix it yesterday and ended up buying a new cable.
We got it hooked up and then realized the computer couldn't find my network adapter. So today, Ed drove all around the cities to find me one. He also set it up for me.
He really loves me (or was sick of being told to stop hogging the bandwidth while I was at work to watch Dota)

if you excuse me, im going to rant about my experience moving into my new place yesterday.
renting a room that's in a separate building from the main house so that's nice. feels like a combination of sharing a house and having your own apartment. also kinda cozy cabin in the woods vibes with the neighborhood being surrounded by forest.

favorite corner of it so far. ignore my dishes im a human and i just had pizza.
it also has a hammock swing chair thing!!! (my second favorite thing about it)

now to the cons. could not get the ethernet adapters to connect to get the house wifi to reach my room, so i message the landlord. he calls me back, explaining how to set it up and telling me there's instructions laying in my room. so i follow them and get it to work. for like 15 mins. then i struggle for about an hour running back and forth between my room and the house, trying to connect the adapters, but it turns out they're too far apart. so i message the landlord again, and he tells me to switch the cables, since apparently, mine is much longer. it wasn't. so today i buy a friggin 20m long cable and string it along the walls with masking tape, and now it works and he's said he'll repay me so that's nice.
another unfortunate thing was the lock for the only key i was given to the house deciding to stop working. at 3am. when i needed to go to the bathroom. found my way in through another door tho.
my favorite of the other three tennants so far is this guy who makes music and discussed our favorite artists with on a rug outside his room. why? he let me show him Will Wood, Lemon Demon and Mother Mother and genuinely seemed to like it! immediately a cool person in my weird view of the world.
that's all my rant because sometimes tumblr is my diary. all in all im very thankful to have my own place finally and the few negative things don't really bother me that much i just like to tell people about things that happen to me hope you enjoy.

My college’s on campus housing recently switched over to using Xfinity as the provider and maintainer for the wifi in dorms.
And I wasn’t on campus last semester, but from what I heard, the network was terrible and would just randomly go down for hours.
I figured I’d be ok because last spring the wifi in my dorm room specifically was horrible, but I could connect my laptop to the Ethernet port in my room and get on the network that way.
Anyways. I moved back on campus yesterday and turns out that Xfinity COVERED UP EVERY SINGLE ETHERNET PORT IN THE DORMS. Give me my wired internet connection back Xfinity!

Great news is I'm back at my apartment and my ethernet adapter here works for my switch just as well as my parents' house, which means I'll not be limited from playing splatoon online
Minor sigh of relief, I really enjoy Splatoon online so far and didn't want to force it on wifi

diy router update
installed the pihole software. its working fine. finally have adblocking back on the things i cant easily change the dns server for. (i had the dns server on my old router set to nextdns but the new router doesn't have the option to change the dns server)
all the configuration files i worked so hard on for dnsmasq are not neciecery anymore because of pihole's built in dhcp server but thats fine i needed to get everything working under the most basic configuration possible before i started making things more complicated.
still gotta sort out that slow wifi issue. the slow ethernet is fine its basicly at the limit of my switch anyway, but the wifi is far slower than it should be.

Multiple days later, I've actually managed to get Debian 12 running on my old MacBook. I'm going to throw my troubleshooting into the world, just in case. Not like anybody comes to Tumblr for tech support, but I'd be remiss if I didn't at least present this information in a public way.
Solved
GPU Drivers
Apparently this whole time, the thing causing the black screen on boot was the AMD dGPU. These things are known for failing in this generation of MacBook. Mine, however, has not failed, so I didn't even think to suspect it. I know it's okay because OCLP macOS, Zorin OS, and Pop!_OS were all capable of booting with it still enabled.
For some reason, though, Debian absolutely shits its pants when presented with the AMD Radeon 6490M. I followed this guide for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and disabled the AMD dGPU, forcing Debian to only see the Intel HD 3000 iGPU, and everything booted–no problem.
Wi-Fi Drivers
Debian won't install the necessary Wi-Fi drivers for this machine during install, but I got the Wi-Fi working, regardless. However, apparently the "b43" open-source driver really hates the Broadcom BCM4331 chip that 2011 MacBook Pros have (despite claiming to support it). Not only did it not detect 5 GHz networks, but it also would just randomly stop working. The network would stay connected, but stuff would just get super slow and eventually start timing out. The fix was to purge "firmware-b43-installer" and install the "wl" (broadcom-sta-dkms) drivers instead (I did this in reverse order because I didn't want to lose connection and have to get up and plug the thing into Ethernet. Nothing bad happened as far as I can tell). Now the WiFi works perfectly.
Custom Cursors
The cursor I use (A Linux Conversion of the Posy Cursor for Windows) did not like being placed in [ ~/.local/share/icons ]. That wasn't enough for it. The arrow and pointer would work, but only in some apps. The loading hourglass was nowhere to be seen. Apparently, you also have to place a copy of the cursor folder in [ /usr/share/icons ]. Which is weird because Debian doesn't allow you to move files into that directory without using the "sudo cp" command in terminal, but whatever. The folder's there, and my cursor's fixed.
Partially Solved
Custom Theme
On Debian (although I think this is more specifically a GNOME issue), custom shell and GTK themes just love to be inconsistent. I still haven't fixed everything. Some apps still disobey my custom theme's macOS-like window control buttons, but it's whatever. They were always a luxury, so I can deal with some apps (like Firefox) not having them.
This isn't, however, the only thing that's still broken with my Custom Theme. For the record, I'm using Orchis. Apparently GNOME's auto dark/light mode just doesn't work anymore. The option is still there in Settings, but setting it to "Default" (which clearly shows an icon of both a dark and light window, indicating it'll change on its own) will do nothing. It just picks one theme and stays that way. I tried using GNOME extensions to fix this. Specifically, I tired "Night Theme Switcher" and "User Theme X." Both would properly switch the Shell Theme. However, they wouldn't change the GTK4 theme, which meant apps like the GNOME Files App would just not obey the new system theme unless I manually added the theme's files to [ ~/.config/gtk-4.0 ] and then logged out and in again.
So: bummer. Auto Light & Dark mode doesn't work, and for now I don't think it's possible to fix. Not the end of the world. I just set everything to dark mode for now, but it is a bummer. I do like using Light Mode during the day, and on the low contrast screen this 14-year-old laptop has, it really helps, but oh well. It's not a deal breaker.
Not Solved
Debian 13 "Trixie"
During my escapades and attempts to make Debian work, I ended up trying to install Debian 13 RC1 to see if newer packages and kernels would fix the AMD GPU issue. I tried both the Netinst ISO and the DVD ISO. Both of them would not work, period. I would select the EFI boot from the Mac Boot Picker, and the installer would immediately black screen and freeze. Debian 12 at least let me install the operating system before failing. Why Debian 13 RC1 did this, I have no idea. I haven't tried installing it since I disabled the dGPU, and I won't be trying until Debian 13 is the main stable release. So for now, Debian 13 is completely unrunnable and uninstallable on this hardware (in it's default form, anyway), and I can only hope the dGPU disable fixed it, or whatever they do between now and it's first stable release does.
