Overconsumption, propagated and encouraged by corporates who monetise our basic human desires and insecurities, is the biggest problem in this current day. I really wish schools would place a greater emphasis on farming, gardening, and textiles, and not constantly drum productivity into our children's minds. Maybe that way we'd learn to greater appreciate the work and resources requires to grow our food or make our clothes, and stop seeing both as merely disposable objects we can consume to the max with no consequences. We as humans are not above nature, our existence depends on it- so we cannot afford to be out here damaging it with our excessive desires. This isn't exactly an 'activism', 'change the world' quote, but I just came across it and it is one of the most beautiful quotes I have read! I often feel myself getting attached to worldly possessions and matters- from clothes, to cars, to getting that kim k body etc, and tbh I feel like this is the general state amongst our society. Through capitalism fuelling our innate desire to boost our egos and attach ourselves to things that provide short-term happiness, we lose touch of our hearts, and our purpose on this Earth. And I'm not saying we need to be extremely one thing or the other, all ego or all spiritual- but I feel we need to really look within ourselves and discover who we are, amidst the craziness of the world. One of my favourite quotes from Abdul Sattar Edhi, known in Pakistan as the 'Angel of Mercy', who yesterday would have turned 89. I will never forget the feeling I felt when I first read an account of his on the Humans of Pakistan page, how in awe I was of his selflessness and devotion to others, his lack of materialism and just the plain fact that he epitomised exactly what I wanted to see in the world. This quote is a constant reminder to myself to never lose my humanity. No matter what grades you achieve, what level of education you reach, how many qualifications you have, how high your salary is- it all means nothing if you lose your love for humanity. In a society that pushes us to focus on our own goals, our own achievements, it can be hard to remember this- which is why people like Edhi are needed to remind us of the bigger picture. I was always vaguely aware of her significance in feminism, but I'm honestly so glad I decided to research why this was.
