I see your “Polites’s voice gets quieter as the musical goes on because Odysseus can’t remember him as well” and I raise you “Polites’s voice gets quieter because Odysseus isn’t following his ideals as much, and Eurylochus’s is quiet right away since he never followed his ideals in the first place”

Speaking of how Odysseus sees Eurylochus (could be seen as a part two to this post), I often think about this video Jorge made about Eurylochus where he talks about how Eury almost seems lost and like he can’t find his way due to how inconsistent his instrumental is.
I think it also implies something super interesting from Odysseus’ perspective too.
Eurylochus, as far as I can tell, only really has his Luck Runs Out motif that we almost exclusively hear paired with the rest of the crew. It’s something that he leads on, yes, but there is a moment where the crew uses it on their own (in Mutiny, when Perimedes stabs Odysseus) and therefore it feels like something much more dedicated to the crew as a whole. This could be something showing how much Eurylochus puts into the crew and how much of his life is dedicated to them, or it could also be something that shows how much more similar he is to the crew than to Odysseus (lumping himself in with them and further leading to the separation between Ody and the crew that I talk about in this post— can you tell I yap a lot about Eurylochus?).
But I think it’s interesting to look at it in a more meta way. EPIC is primarily told from Odysseus’ point of view, only changing after Eurylochus dies. So, every moment we have with him is strictly from Odysseus’ perspective and, therefore, the lack of distinction in Eurylochus’ music could easily be attributed to that.
Most of Eurylochus’ arc is implied— specifically when it comes to how he changes from Circe’s island to Mutiny and that’s led to a lot of interpretations from people that aren’t necessarily wrong due to the fact that nothing about him is very clear. And I don’t just mean people who view him as a selfish hypocrite, I also mean opinions that I hold too.
I, for example, strongly believe that there’s a real possibility Eurylochus wasn’t the only one who opened the windbag. He was definitely there and probably apart of it, but there are real implications in the show that he might not have done it alone and simply took responsibility out of guilt. It doesn’t absolve him of all wrongdoing, but it is something to consider when it comes to the discussions about his self-preserving nature versus how he prioritizes the wellbeing of the crew. That being said, these implications aren’t what’s directly in the text, through lyrics or music, so I could be totally wrong.
And that’s exactly my point; there isn’t a whole lot to Eurylochus to decipher, musically. Jorge likes to use the music to give the audience background information on characters (like how he uses Athena’s ensemble in Warrior of the Mind to tell us that Athena is amused by Odysseus fangirling over her or how we can sometimes hear Circe’s motif in regards to Scylla, both things he’s revealed on TikTok). This is the type of information that Odysseus might not necessarily know but that we get told through the music.
Eurylochus doesn’t seem to have anything like that.
Unlike pretty much every other character that has some level of distinction to them and how they interact with our primary perspective, Odysseus doesn’t have anything to connect with Eurylochus other than the rest of the crew. There’s nothing that is specifically tied to him and this carries on throughout the entire show, where he takes on other melodies and instruments depending on the context. While perhaps not intentional, Eurylochus being musically lost not only leaves a lot of his actions and motivations up to interpretation for the audience, but it also highlights just how out of sync he is with Odysseus.
Their primary conflict revolves around their inability to understand one another and it’s very clear that they both have views on the other that is incorrect. Odysseus believes Eurylochus to be too ruthless and yet too cautious to actually effectively use the philosophy and Eurylochus sees Odysseus as too arrogant, playing foolish games with the gods that will only get the crew killed. They’re both right, to a degree, but their inability to understand or even empathize with the other’s position is really what destroys them— something we see even in the very beginning. There is no musical tie to them and nothing musically surrounding Eurylochus to signal any other meanings to the audience— Eurylochus is just his Luck Runs Out melody, that again is intrinsically tied to the rest of the crew which makes it less distinctive to him as a character than, say, Open Arms for Polites.
And then comes Mutiny— where Eurylochus is the most musically distinct and yet, none of it is truly his. In the beginning, he hijacks Odysseus’ electric guitar (possibly a hint that he understands Odysseus more than Odysseus has, thus far, understood him) and, in the second half, the melody he sings is that of Survive— which was potentially the first time he truly doubted his captain in ten years— to a beat of The Horse and The Infant (that’s what my friend and I hear, anyways)— which is mostly just a tool used for foreshadowing Thunder Bringer. Then, the script flips and Odysseus is in Eurylochus’ position for the Luck Runs Out melody, possibly signaling that he’s finally beginning to understand Eurylochus for the first time since the start of the story. And, instead of going back to the lyrics of Luck Runs Out, Eurylochus turns to the specific use of the word ‘suffering’.
Because Eurylochus is so vague in his instrumentals, prioritizing the crew over his own well-being and identity, the times where he does falter into other melodies, particularly ones involving Odysseus, are very loaded with implications that you can interpret— like how Odysseus uses the concept of suffering as a motivator, associating it with Penelope and her ability to make everything worth it. Eurylochus, on the other hand, associates it with his loss of the will to survive, which is why I think it follows that song’s melody too.
But even then, Eurylochus is still followed by the voices of the crew with a melody that has never been his alone because Eurylochus, as a character, is defined by what he does for other people and, since Odysseus simply cannot understand being in that position, Eury’s music reflects that.
I just find it interesting that the character with the second most screen time has little to show for it musically, and I think that’s a good thing for showing Odysseus’ inability to see things outside of his perspective (or outside of a magical perspective; as in, he can’t relate to regular men), especially given that this is a flaw Eurylochus has as well. It could’ve been really easy to give Eurylochus a bass— which is known for being paired with guitars— or maybe a specific drum and call it a day, symbolically, but Jorge chose to keep him as only the voice of the crew with one mention of a bass and snare in Luck Runs Out.
Something about that intrigues me idk
#I genuinely don’t know if this makes any sense or if I’m just mindlessly yapping about nonsense but idk#keep in mind that I don’t know music at all and this is all just me picking up music things jorge has talked about#and forcing them to fit my narrative analysis#I think the conflict of odysseus being unable to prioritize anything but his family#vs eury being unable to prioritize anything but the crew’s survival is VERY interesting#so yeah anyways#my post#epic#epic the musical#epic odysseus#epic eurylochus#epic analysis#epic thunder saga#epic the musical the thunder saga#epic the musical ocean saga

OKAY OOKAY I GOT THIS SONG I'VE BEEN LISTENING TO A LOT LATELY CALLED "ship in a bottle" BY FIN ARGUS AND I FEEL LIKE IS SO.. EPIC!ODYSSEUS CODED?? AND ALSO EURYLOCHUS TOO??
ESPECIALLY IN THESE LYRICS
"Sailing on a ship in a bottle
Anchor all your thoughts to the bottom
Pulling ropes and pulling your head back
To see what is breaking the foremast
You set sail alone, there is no crew
No one on the deck who can help you
This is all your own battle to win
This is your ship and you are the captain
Oh, captain, let's make a deal
Where we both say the things that we both really feel
I feel scared and I'm starting to sink
And I only sink deeper the deeper I think
Oh, captain, oh, captain, deal
Oh, captain, deal, oh, captain, deal, oh
Oh, captain, make up your mind
Before the salt burns your eyes and you run out of time
'Cause you're popping the cork, you get lost in your brain
And you lose touch with all the things that made you feel sane
Oh, captain, oh, captain, deal
Oh, captain, deal, oh, captain, deal, oh"
LIKE TRY TO CONVINCED ME THAT THIS ISN'T JUST THE GHOST OF EURYLOCHUS HAUNTING ODYSSEUS ALIVE!?
#Istg need someone to turn this song for an epic edit or something or or make an animation for it#Like do you see me vision? Ghost eury haunting ody while he was in Calypso island?? CHATTTTTT
I've gots to yap about Eurylochus because i love him soooo much
Anyways I'm gonna go into the reasons why Eury doesn't deserve the hate he gets (this is for funsies)
1. His song Luck runs out — I've seen people get mad(?) or at least a bit antsy about his song and why he was "defying" Odysseus. The reason why I don't think he's "defying" Ody is because he put his trust in Polites and Ody when they found the cave after meeting the winion's island ("I've gotta hand it to you both" THAT'S ACKNOWLEDGMENT/PRAISE ON THEM FINDING AN ALTERNATIVE ON FOOD RATGER THAN JUST RAIDING THE WINION'S ISLAND) and when some of them got killed by Polyphemus, he was a bit more hesitant on just showing up to random places that belong to powerful deities(?)
2. When Eury opened the wind bad. Now in Eury's song Ody said "You've heard the legends of the island in the sky" MEANING that Aeolus' island was a LEGAND a MYTH (which is why Eury was quick to be hesitant about it being the actual island) and this means that a wind bag must've also been a legend. Not to mention that it was Perimedes and Elpenor who were the ones who was told about the wind bag first and let the other crewmen about the bag. Eury was just in belief just as everyone else that there WAS treasure in that bag and he did try to tell Ody as soon as Poseidon was done trying to kill them
3. Eury wanting to leave the crew behind. NOW THIS ONE MIGHT LWK BE REACHING LMAO but anyways I believe that Eury wanted to leave the crew for 2 reasons, one being that so many people already died based on how they keep having to run into Gods/Goddesses (Poseidon/Circe/Aeolus) and since they've gone through so much already, it'd be better to just leave them when they'll die there instead of a process of going home. The second reason is that I think Eury didn't want to see them die as HUMANS. He said in his song "I just don't want to see another life end" WHICH COULD MEAN SEE THEM DIE AS HUMANS. It's normal to kill animals for the Gods/Goddeses and maybe Eury could pretend that they were just animals and he wouldn't be too hurt by their death (still wrong but somewhat justified??)
4. The Mutiny song. Eury told off Ody for killing the 6 other guys because ODY PROVED HIM WRONG WITH HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN LIVE. Ody had been fighting about keeping everyone alive to get home (in Puppeteer) AND THEN KILLED 6 GUYS. ODY WAS IN THE MINDSET OF "It's just one life to take, — then our journey's over" like in Survive, Ody was willing to do ANYTHING to get home. Perimedes was right to say "how can we trust you now" since Ody was willing to kill THEM to get home. And the reason Eury called Ody "captain" before Zeus came up is because Ody is a natural leader under pressure, Eury wanted guidance/reassurance that they'd be okay (and he killed those cows because he didn't trust Ody, as well as because he didn't even think he was going to get home, let alone have a food source in a while.
Holy yappathon frfr. I just love Eurylochus and i explode everytime someone hates him 💔💔

“Antinous..” Telemachus sighed. “I have got you something, or someone.”
He’s decided to abandon his plan. He snapped his fingers, and Eurymachus appeared, looking like he just ran through a flower field.
“And.. you can tell mother this, but I’m staying 3/4 of my year up here, and 1/4 of my year down at Hades.” He picked a pomegranate out of his pocket.
- @the-prince-telemachus
“EURY!!” Antinous immediately runs as fast as he can over and takes Eurymachus in his arms, peppering him in endless kisses. He barely even processes the prince’s words as Eurymachus laughs and nuzzles into Antinous’ neck. Then Ant looks over at Telemachus, “Wait— You— What??” He looks from the pomegranate to the prince. “You mean it?”

I LOVE YOUR ART SO MUCH!! idk if you’re okay with this but can i please have some art of Polites-?
Thank you! And of course!! Forgive me you've been waiting for quite a long time :(
Here comes 🎵✨The Boi✨🎵 All smiles for the camera
Yap session underneath
This turned out more detailed than planned because I liked thinking about the design?
First of all, for some reason I'm stuck with the thought that he's an archer, he was the first one to see the winion's island in Full speed ahead so I guess his glasses help him very well?? Haha I know I know. Still, I personally don't imagine him being full on close-combat, for sure in some situations but preferably bow
And second I wanted each of the trio to have at least two of the same colors integrated in their designs,
like Red in Polites' Headband, Ody's cape and Eurys waistband
Yellow in each of the trios jewelry
And Polites' glasses and Eurys clothes are Purple! (Still looking if I can sneak a purple element into Ody's design 🥺)
but like I hope that makes sense?
Thanks for listening to my Ted talk :'D

And what if I do want to get you started 🤨
Please do yap about the relationships between Polites, Perimedes, and Elpenor
Guess who is back to the land of the living? MEEE
So here are the offerings: Poli, Peri and Elpenor chilling together, because I'm a firm believer Polites collected friends like Pokémons (affectionate) (also was lazy to draw sheep but they're there) (I'm never letting him beat the symbolism allegations)

The lil guys having a staring contest, interpret this as you will

A headcanon that I believe to be especially funny is Ody + Eury's complete unawareness of the others' existence – and Odysseus' indignation with this fact (he seems a bit, I don't know, a possessive type of kid to me? Does it make sense?)
That or I just want Ody and Peri to have incompatible personalities and argue a lot (something something foreshadowing I'm not very smart in these matters sorry)
(and yeah Polites doesn't have glasses yet. idk why. maybe he always needed them but ignored blurry vision in favor of running around, not wanting to break them? yes historical inaccuracies. do I care? no)

This is a confusing one to me, even tho I drew it myself lmao... Might be set both before and during Troy, it doesn't really matter. What matters is that Elpenor got bullied by Helios and ended up sunburnt as hell :D Polites is just vibing, trying to manage Peri's hairstyle

Now referring to the cut song ("I don't love anybody that's my power", that one), I think Perimedes would actively try to convince everyone he's so damn badass... Except for the situations when Poli is in a 3-meter radius

To summarize, I think I like them in both platonic and romantic interpretations, either is valid for me tbh... Might even indulge and throw some more PoliPeri at ya in the future :D

One of my favorite subtle details in Epic is how, at the start of Wouldn't You Like, you would expect Odysseus to be on his absolute highest guard after all the unexpected hardships throughout the trip and the conversation he just had with Eury. And yet when a mysterious voice from the trees says "I must say, what a brilliant speech you gave," you can practically HEAR the smirk in Odysseus's voice as he asks "who goes there?"
Bro is exploring a strange island while his crews' lives are in danger, but he also LOVES receiving a compliment on his yapping skills

Elpenor & Perimedes
I'm finally re-working on my EPIC (and Odyssey/Illiad too) designs! Last year I made my first Elpenor and Perimedes designs so I present to you a little sketch of my babyboys 💛🩵
Random Yap abt their designs + lore below:
Elpenor has a yellow+blue color scheme inspired by Odysseus, whom Elpenor grew closer with the time, considering Ody like a father (Odysseus colors are also blue and yellow OFC) Elpenor is a very sociable person, but with severe alcohol problems due to the trauma that he suffered during the Trojan war. Odysseus saw Elpenor as a chance to learn how to be the father of a teenager/young adult after realising that Telemachus would no longer be a kid when he get back Home.
Elpenor has a simple style, relaxing and kinda Messy.
Perimedes however, is closer to Eurylochus, who also raised him as a son, thats why his color scheme is orange + Blue. Perimedes was a young boy who grew up with nothing, no parents, no friends, no reason to live. Thats when he met Eurylochus, who started fighting to keep Perimedes alive during the war, and trying to make him make friends with the other men at the crew. Perimedes saw Eury as his biggest inspiration and followed him blindly, knowing he would be his voice.
Perimedes has a more detailed style, he's considered one of the prettiest men in the crew (specially by Elpenor)

almost got into a fistfight online today because people were ragging on odysseus and saying he was a hypocrite for being upset that eury killed helios’ cattle when he killed the cyclops’ sheep. HE DIDNT KNOW!!!!!! HE THOUGHT THEY WERE JUST RANDOM SHEEP!!!!!!! EURY KNEW THE CATTLE WERE THE FUCKING SUN GOD’S CATTLE!!!!!!!! Ok im calm again. i’m just a passionate ody lover and bark when people are mean. like dude thats the king of ithaca. 💢💢💢
STAAANDDD UPPPP ANON!!!!🗣️🗣️ SPEAK UR TRUTHS. Sure there are facepalm worthy moments all throughout, but it’s all very much human of them in the end imo.
Especially so in the original Odyssey (which I know it’s different from Epic canon, but I want to yap now that we’re here sorry) Odysseus and Polyphemus’ scene is known by many as a prime example of the violation of xenia not from Odysseus, but Polyphemus. Odysseus and his crew, sure, went into the Cyclops’ home to kill and take some sheep, but they were actually aware that it was someone’s abode. When you show up to someone’s house as a guest, you’re expected to be fed. Maybe they were a bit impatient with taking the sheep? Well they were a hungry bunch🤷 Not to mention the wine Odysseus had and offered Polyphemus? If I recall correctly rn, it was in fact all intentional as a trade. Odysseus and the group willingly stayed in Polyphemus’ cave for him to come back to do the trade instead of just running off with the sheep. They didn’t know Polyphemus was a monster that had no regards for the laws and the doom that would follow.
Even in Epic, Odysseus tried to reconciled what they’ve done with the gift of wine. Polyphemus chose not to take it properly as an exchange and even mocked them with the ‘you’ll be the last to die’. If you really wanted to choose something to fault Odysseus with there, his hubris is right there!!!! Just a man at the end of the day, what can I say. This concept of violating xenia very much comes back with the suitors, their treatment of beggar Odysseus especially, but I’ll spare you the geeking out. Adding on, ik the concept of time is vague in Epic and it definitely was a lot shorter judging Mutiny, but in the og, the crew were literally stranded on the island for a month iirc. They were constantly starving. Hunger can be a strong motivator. I also wouldn’t be surprised if the crew were also lowkey so low on hopes they would ever get home that it was very easy for them to break, but I digress ajsjakaja
