At a key moment in Pierre Creton's A Prince, Antoine Pirotte, the actor playing Pierre-Joseph, gets out of the bed he's sharing with two other men and is replaced by the much-older director himself, who then assumes the role. The voiceover narrator simply notes that Pierre-Joseph had gotten older. It's clear at that point, if it hasn't been earlier, that the film is deeply rooted in Creton's own experiences, dreams, desires, and vision. So much so, in fact, that it almost becomes a barrier between the viewer and the film, disarming even critical responses to something so personal and idiosyncratic. Some critics, for example, took Creton to task for the "orientalism" of the character Kutta (Chiman Dangi), an Indian, the titular prince, who is viewed as an exotic creature, culminating in a startling nude scene near the end of the film. But it's clear that the Kutta of the film is a reflection of Pierre-Joseph's -- and by extension Creton's -- own imaginings. Similarly, critics objected to the heavy use of voiceover narration, whereas I think Creton resorts to it as a way of suggesting that we all turn the past into stories in our head. This is all to say that I found A Prince fascinating but often opaque, a tantalizing but inaccessible attempt at autobiographical fiction.

Les Mauvaises Filles ! Une expérience théâtrale étrange et captivante. Sandrine Lanno revient avec une pièce qui explore la vie de jeunes femmes rebelles et délinquantes placées dans des institutions d'enfermement dans les années 1950 et aujourd'hui. Cette création est le fruit de deux années de résidence de recherche et de création en collaboration avec la sociologue Natacha Chetcuti-Osorovitz et les élèves de l'ENS, ainsi qu'avec sept jeunes filles d'un centre éducatif fermé. Ratusan Perancang Mode Nasional dan Luar Negeri Ramaikan Jakarta Fashion Week 2023

BALIPORTALNEWS.COM, JAKARTA – Tinggal menghitung hari hingga penyelenggaraan Jakarta Fashion Week 2023 yang akan berlangsung secara offline di di City Hall, Level 5, Pondok Indah Mall III, Jakarta Selatan, sepanjang tanggal 24–30 Oktober 2022 mendatang. Sejauh ini, komite JFW 2023 telah mencatat sejumlah 34 show dari setidaknya 116 label dan perancang mode, baik nasional maupun internasional. “Jakarta Fashion Week sudah lama dikenal sebagai ruang lebur untuk kreasi mode dari berbagai negara. Panggung kami terbuka bagi para perancang mode, tidak hanya dari Indonesia, namun juga dari berbagai negara, termasuk Australia dan Korea Selatan. "Women's business" is what Marie Latour (Isabelle Huppert) tells her husband (François Cluzet) is going on behind closed doors in their apartment. The business is abortion, which Marie provides for prostitutes and other women who are finding childbirth to be a burden during the German occupation of France. But "Women's Business" might also be an apt translation of the original title of Chabrol's film, Une Affaire de Femmes. Based on the true story of Marie-Louise Giraud, who went to the guillotine in 1943 for the abortions she had induced, Story of Women is a deeply feminist film, though never a preachy one. Huppert, as usual, gives an extraordinary performance, emphasizing not only her character's determination to do what she thinks is right for the women she knows, but also her profoundly fatal naïveté about the politics of the era in which she is living. "Women's business" is to survive the ignorance and brutality of men, by any means necessary, but it betrays Marie into some choices that a woman with more knowledge of the way the world works might avoid. She loses sight of the fact that she became an abortionist to survive the deprivation that threatens her life and that of her children, and becomes fixated on their greatly improved standard of living and the possibility that she might earn enough to fulfill  her dream of becoming a professional singer. (A distant dream, as her performance of a song in an audition for a music teacher suggests.) In the end, she goes to a guillotine that is not the toweringly glamorous instrument of death we've grown accustomed to from films about the French Revolution, but a grim and shabby little affair cobbled together from plywood and sheet metal -- a fitting image for the shabbiness of the Vichy régime and its treatment of those it saw as a threat.
