okay, but i think it is about time to talk about one of misao's fears is, because i believe that they can tell you a lot about a character and their psyche — and i came to tell y'all that the one i'm going to be talking about today is that misao fears becoming a mother / motherhood. the first reason in which why i believe this is because misao just genuinely thinks that she is not the nurturing type and that she would likely be a terrible parent to her child ( which i know is a very depressing thing to think about. but it is something that she has feared for a long time, unfortunately. ) this likely stems from a mix of misao's inability to deal with her own emotions, though, as she feels like it's better to just bottle them up and deal with them all on her own rather than the alternative. and this would be to try to confide in someone and/or get help from them should she need it. so, misao feels as if her child were to come to her needing emotional support from her, she would absolutely fail at it and the last thing she wants is to emotionally neglect someone the way she had been as a child ( p.s. of course, this was mostly just borne out of unfortunate circumstances, as i've stated before because of kaiyah's illness. though this hasn't stopped misao from feeling the brunt of the impact that it had on her. )

plus... i feel as if misao also doesn't have a lot of confidence in herself whenever it comes to the concept of always being able to put a child first, as she has a pretty negative self-image of herself deep down if i'm being honest. she sees herself as an extremely selfish person who can't even become friends with one person because she is so afraid that someone will hurt her, and in her opinion, that makes her pathetic or weak. so she doesn't feel like she'd be able to take care of a child with the amount of responsibility that is required to in order to raise them properly and protect them at the same time.

though this isn't necessarily true as misao has put up those barriers that would normally let people into her heart mostly due to trauma, and having experienced trauma doesn't make anyone weak. i just feel as if she desperately needs to remedy her self-image because it is very damaging to think of yourself like that and it would be really good for her emotional health if she were to try to ways to better cope with everything that she's experienced throughout her life. there are other reasons as well behind why misao fears motherhood while i'm talking about it, however, and these are arguably one of the more bigger ones: the act of giving birth itself and suddenly being thrust into having to not just take care of yourself, but the baby inside of you as well. which sort of makes sense whenever you connect the dots as to how many horror stories misao has heard about delivering a baby and also how much a person's experience while being pregnant can vary from others. i mean, it has been shown that some people may have more morning sickness than others and that they just don't have a very good experience with being pregnant in general, for example. but other's may be 'glowing' as they say and may find it easier to deal with.

so, you never really know what kind of pregnancy you're going to have until you actually become 'with child' as misao would call it. and the unknown aspect surrounding it scares misao more than anything. plus, as it stands now, she isn't sure whether she'd want to go through the process of giving birth as there can be a lot of complications regarding it. but there can also be so many good things about inviting a new member of the family into your home and misao feels as if it is kind of expected of her to have children so she can continue the kanade line.

but misao is just so afraid of it for these reasons that she can not see herself as a mother, even in her head. however... there is the matter of adoption that she has yet to take into account, but with how focused the jorōgumo are about having biological children, i feel as if misao hasn't even considered it to be an option for those who are afraid of giving birth and also to give a baby / child a loving home as everyone deserves one of those. but yeah. i hope that this gave y'all a little more insight into her character, as misao is scared of re-enacting her past in a way, though i feel as if you become a mother yourself... you have to separate what will be your own experience of parenthood from your parents. so, in order to overcome this fear she has, misao would have to treat it as an entirely different thing from kaiyah's experience as a mother and her own child self's experience of her as a mother.

and this is definitely possible. it would just take some work, as overcoming any kind of fear would. plus, i feel as if misao were to accept other people's help it would also benefit her, since discussing motherhood / plunging into the topic of the sometimes seemingly scary thing that is parenthood is definitely not something that you have to try to go through alone.

Sorom couldn't lie to him. She'd never believed in lying to anyone since it wasn't the right thing to do, though she acted well that if she needed to lie (usually about hiding a present or surprising someone), they believed her. Hanwool was innocent to believe almost anything Sorom told him since he was that trusting, but she'd made a promise to be the best version of herself in a relationship. That meant being truthful to her husband.

"...I was with my parents," she told him truthfully. Married for two years and things were still tense. They weren't bad anymore, and in fact they often all had family meals together, though they still weren't loving and nurturing the way they were when they ate with Hanwool's parents. Most of the meetings she had with her family were by herself.

Mother used the time to practically interview their marriage. Her father would make sure that Sorom was being cared for. In a weird way, they were still looking out for their daughter and wanting what was best for her. She knew it wasn't out of a place of hatred for their son in law; they even spoke often how kind and loving he was. They still doubted his abilities as a provider for the family they were actively trying to start.

She still hadn't told them they were trying to get pregnant. Sorom felt like she was living a secret life with Hanwool and it was exhausting. What would happen when they did get pregnant and she had to tell them? Would they be surprised or upset?

"I didn't answer my phone. You know my mother would kill me if I answered it during dinner. I'm sorry, I should've at least texted you," she sighed. Sorom started to unpack the leftovers mother sent home with her that had a heart shaped note on the top of the containers wishing Hanwool a good work week.

"Did you tell them?"

"No. I couldn't," Sorom admitted. "I'm sorry. They do love you. I don't...think they're ready to hear we're trying to have a baby, yet."

He she knows how to deal with, he's so easy to dispose off, whenever she encounters difficulties in getting a job done, they're related not to her lack of wit or prowess, but to circumstances, equipment, sudden turns of event usually related in turn to the inevitability of the fallacy of man.

So, either she's up against something her arrows don't work against or someone or the other stepped out of line for some half-assed belief or the other, messing with her plans, falling over themselves to fix things according to their ideals, ignorant to the larger scheme of things she's forced to operate in here.

She commends and even admires the vixen's ability (and the genuine tone of it) to split the soft into categories of deserving and undeserving. She wishes, perhaps, deep within her she could say the same. That she could nurture those meant to be nurtured, that she could be soft enough to watch over a lamb rather than kill its mother.

But the envy prickles at the back of her throat like a snake tickling her insides with the tips of its fangs, a playful, demeaning threat. She grimaces for a split second as though she were about to vomit.

She almost relaxes at the shift in the other's everything. The darkness and anger that befalls her, the threat she exudes, Sarang thinks of the people who have had the misfortune of meeting her and delights in knowing they met their predator.

Her immortality may protect her from seeing her rather timely demise in these woods, but no secondary glance towards her teeth or claws or eyes is needed to imagine the kind of pain she'd live through first.

She stills somewhat, pauses in pushing the perfume extract she always carries on her tongue onto the air around her to truly - as she's done before - take in who she's dealing with.

Considering the power the fox possesses, Sarang should rather begin wondering if her name is written on a list hidden somewhere in the Order's depths. A beast, a revenger and avenger, protector, mother earth's finest, deadliest weapon. Why wouldn't they want her dead?

Perhaps this is an act of defiance on Sarang's part as well. Work with the she-fox another version of her might have been set out to kill, in a different timeline. "I do have a plan. I'll lure them in, you kill them. Devour them. I mostly need you to take care of one of them."

She lifts her index, as unnecessary a gesture as it is decorative. "He's wearing dragon skin and my arrows can't penetrate that. Before you ask, can't tell you where he got it from. Though, I'm happy to add, you get to keep it if you'd like~"

- to you it was just a thought, but for historia it seemed to be a definite 'we're having a baby'. not that you minded, seeing her truly ecstatic made you happy.

- at first, hange's a little opposed to the idea of a child- not really seeing the bright side or the benefits, but after a little conversing they become increasingly ok with it.

- "could we use it to annoy levi and erwin?"

- after your conversation, she's a lot more open to the idea of a child but the thought of having to share her food with it is a little off putting still.

Needing people, being vulnerable is how you get killed in Night City and she's known that since she was a kid, sadly. She really puffs out her chest and acts tough but she'd never want people to see her cry, mourn, in pain, etc for fear of it being exploited against her. Unfortunately, sometimes that closes her off to some real genuine connections - heart to hearts are few and far in between. Jackie's one of the few people's she's known in her life that is able to coax that vulnerability out of her.

what will always lure them into certain danger? a loved one in danger? a promise of something they are always searching for? Originally, the promise of riches and glory and a legacy as well as self-preservation. Vera is very loyal too - if you're in her inner circle she'll go through hell for you. That's the part of her that wins out when all the dreams of glory turn out to be bullshit.

what advice would they give to their younger self? Lots. That she's worth something. That Night City and all of it's bullshit ends in nothing but pain and loss. That she should cherish the people she loves while she still has them (namely Jackie and her mother). Let yourself be vulnerable. Don't be blind to the people around you that love you dearly!

Beth really struggles with the part of her that doesn't feel guilty about the death of her husband and subsequent people she's killed in an effort to protect herself and later on people she cares for. She thinks that it makes her a bad person, to be so okay with killing. It's a lot easier than she thought it would be. She doesn't like there's this cold, rotten part of her that hates and is violent and ugly.

what advice would they give to their younger self? Well, fuck her parents first and foremost. Hi! I've followed your blog for a while and love your individual takes. Can you do a succinct character study of Milva? I'm thinking of writing with her soon. (Bonus points if you could hypothesise how she'd intereact with other witchers of Kaer Morhen).

i have awakened

to me, milva represents the dichotomy and conflict between vulnerability and strength. she’s an inversion / subversion of the “action girl” trope - the girl in a group of guys who is just as badass as any of them... (more information on the trope here and here). the trope of the action girl is also intended to be sexy and conform to the expectations of the viewer, still feminine in appearance or having a “glow up” moment where she discovers femininity and is happy with it.

milva stops all of this bullshit in its tracks in manyw ays. primarily, she is not perfect and infalliably strong. instead of being capable in everything with no real depth or difficulty, she actually struggles immensely and has many self-percieved flaws and insecurities. just because she’s a badass in combat doesn’t mean she doesn’t have emotions. she berates herself, particularly in baptism of fire, multiple times for being illiterate / uneducated / “simple”, as well as a woman. throughout baptism of fire (the only book of the series where she actually got any development, let’s be honest) she is faced with her insecurities extensively. 

milva was raised in a very traditional sodden peasantry upbringing, from which she was taught lessons about how men and women are expected to and “should” act. she rebelled from this, seeking ways in which she could not conform to the expectations of womanhood - she prides herself on her strength, which is her skill at archery. when she is reduced to her gender, she becomes indignant and volatile as she should: we can see this possibly best demonstrated when she punched cloggy for his misogynistic demands to her, and gave him a concussion with one punch. she reacted in this way not only because his views were bigotedm but because she has spent her entire life saying, “i’m not what people expect of a woman, i’m not!”

thus goes that when she had to reveal her pregnancy to the group, she was ashamed of herself and very insecure. she had spent much effort rebelling from “traditional feminine roles”, but now was restricted to exactly that - pregancy, which is a role of a “traditional woman” in her cultural gender norms. as she says to geralt, she compares herself now to a chicken, instead of a red kite (a “milva” in elder speech, and “milvus milvus” in real life scientific terminology). she took the name red kite because it’s a bird of prey, it’s ferocious! it kills without looking back... and she felt then that she “got herself stuck” in a situation where she was expected to care and nurture - the complete opposite of what she has based her identity around. this is the dichotomy of maria, her birth name, and milva, her chosen name. when she reveals her pregnancy to geralt, she refers to herself resentfully as “a millstone, a typical bloody woman!” because she resents herself for being now tied to the social expectations of womanhood through her pregnancy.

additionally, her pregnancy showed that she can be swayed by social pressures, or was at once swayed - instead of laughing in the face of traditional femininity, she felt pressured to act as the she-elf in the scoia’tel squad did, she was socially pressured into having sex with a man. her pregnancy is a result of her exposing herself to a traditional feminine role (which she didn’t enjoy, but now still has the consequences of).

she likely felt too guilty to abort the pregnancy because childbearing and rearing is an expectation traditionally placed upon women.

she continued to travel with geralt after she found out that his quest was to save his daughter, because her logic was that if she would lose her own child because she did not want to carry the pregnancy to term, she could at least endavour to save geralt’s child - it would be “a life for a life,” rather than just having an abortion on her own and “losing a child” without ‘making it up somehow’ (again, conservative ideas, because that’s how she was raised and precisely what she is trying to outgrow in her character development).

what her development is, is accepting that she can simply exist as herself outside of the confines of social pressures. she has to ask herself what SHE wants, not what other people want or expect from her. instead of trying to rebel from what her traditional society wants from a woman, or trying to follow the needs of a man (geralt), she has to do what she wants for herself. for example, in tower of the swallow, she cuts her virgin’s plait because “she’s not a virgin, nor a widow.” this can be seen as her growing away from the expectations of a virgin, being open about the fact that she is no longer a virgin, but still conforming to the societal standards which surround them.

milva’s other subversions of the action girl trope come from being independently masculine (instead of “i learned it from my brother”) ... she learned archery from her father, but he died when she was young, so she didn’t receive mentorship far into her childhood. another way she subverts her trope is that the action girl usually is fanservice-y and is thus pretty much a “sexy lamp”: i.e., a sexual object (”if you can take out a female character and replace her with a sexy lamp “). she comes off as a real person with deep emotions, so that rules out being a lamp. additionally, she is sexy as in she is attractive, but she is not meant to be a romantic interest for geralt or any of the other male characters. she does not wear feminine clothing ever (refused to get into a dress in lady of the lake), she wears men’s clothing which is remarked upon several times. 

milva also is independent out of survival. when her father died and her mother remarried, her stepfather abused her, and her mother did not stand up for her. in self-defense, she beat her stepfather to death and ran away from home. she’s been mostly along since then, hunting alone, though she collaborates heavily with the dryads of brokilon and scoia’tel commandos. she has a difficult time trusting others to have her best at heart, because no one has ever looked out for her besides herself.

other (obvious, but important to state) character traits include:

directness. why say three dozen words, when three will do? she doesn’t beat around the bush and will say the truth without mincing words or making pleasantries.

short temper, and impulsiveness. her exhausted gaze became that of a wolf. don’t fuck with her. sometimes she says or does things she regrets immediately after.

maturity. she is not above apology and admitting her faults and weaknesses. unlike geralt in baptism of fire, she is willing to accept the company of comrades once they have gained her trust.

moments of clarity? sometimes, she can just say exactly what is going on, in a very sort of meta way. such as in baptism of fire when she says that to her it seems that everyone who comes into contact with ciri dies.

action, not words! as opposed to characters like regis, she doesn’t spend her time philosophizing or thinking too much about things. if something needs to be done, she gets it done immediately without overthinking the options. she’s good on her feet this way, but finds discussions about ‘what could be and why things are’ confusing.

in regards to how she would interact with the other wolf witchers:

i think she would try to fit in with them as much as possible, maybe feeling a need to get validation and respect from them as they’re capable fighters and men, she would want to be seen as their equal and afraid that they wouldn’t see her as such. but they are cool guys, so i think they would like and respect her. if geralt was around, i think she would be in even better spirits, and she’d have good humor probably (razzing geralt about being a handful, how’d you grow up with this guy, has he always been like this hahaha...). it also depends on who else is in the scene but that’s how i think she’d interact with them. she’s similar to geralt in many ways (strong but very insecure) so i think they’d appreciate her. she would probably see them like the brothers she never had.
