Reblogging this because the general discourse around sports and exercise is either you go to the gym and lift weight or it doesn't count as sport/exercise.
So first you have the confluence of meaning between sport and exercise and physical activity. Then you have the elimination of what "sport" means in favour of it all being "exercise". And finally "exercise" is just bodybuilding and getting thin (often symultaneously, go figure).
Moving a litle bit every day in things like going for a walk, dancing in the living room, doing light stretches, or even just running errands is physical activity. And you don't need much more. But if you do need some more, or you want to start training strength or agility, then specific exercises like the ones in this video are more than enough. And then, if all of this is boring to you but maybe doing fun things with other people or on your own that don't feel like repeating over and over the same thing would help you, that's where sports come in. Badminton, boules, nordic walking... There are a thousand and not all of them are football or require a competition level of practice.

june listening reading notes
i’ve said this before lol but it still floors me how Helpful it was: if you want to ‘pre-study’ or prepare for reading a specific novel for pleasure, as in making its reading level ‘more approachable’ for you, i think listening reading method really helps.
yeah, listening reading method’s main goal is for listening comprehension improvement (and it does work especially the more you do step 2/step 3).
it just also helped ‘boost my reading level’ for a specific author’s vocabulary a lot. i’ve tried L-R Method a few ways with Guardian by Priest. I’ve tried pre-reading where I look up every unknown word and read before I do step 2 or 3 (chinese audio-chinese text, chinese audio-english text). I’ve tried just diving into step 2 or step 3, doing step 2/3 in random orders, and right now i just do step 2. In particular, right now i do step 2 where i listen to the chinese audio-read chinese text and just click a few unknown words that seem important.
Sometimes I do step 2 again, sometimes i read a section of the chapter before or after step 2, sometimes i listen to the audiobook on its own after step 2. The main thing is though - I’m getting repeated exposure to any new words, and if they bother me that I still can’t follow them roughly then I look them up. As a result, each time i see them I’m more likely to know them. And each chapter i do, i’m more familiar with priest’s particular vocabulary.
Now that I’ve done chapters 1-8 a few times each (some step 2, some step 3, some audiobook only listening) I recognize enough vocabulary that when I just read silently (regular reading) I notice SO much nuance I missed the first time i read (even if the first time I read I was doing intensive word lookup of every unknown word). Just being more familiar with the vocabulary, i’m noticing words/sayings that were too hard to catch the first time, understanding longer descriptive paragraphs as a whole comprehensive image instead of single phrases, and i am just kind of floored by how many details i missed the first time that i’m catching now. in addition, i’m also doing way better reading old sections (and brand new ones) without a dictionary.
when i started L-R method with Guardian, Guardian was significantly above my reading level - enough to take forever to read and feel difficult with a dictionary (but doable). Now it feels doable without a dictionary, reasonably easy with a dictionary. Basically the reading difficulty is lower now.
It seems like an obvious benefit - do stuff a few times, repeatedly expose yourself to unknown words (like review) and you’ll learn more lol. I just wanna mention it again because its not supposed to be a main benefit of L-R Method. But I’m definitely noticing its a result.

Also, again, I’ve been experimenting and once my reading difficulty hit a certain level of ‘ease’ for Guardian, just doing Step 2 alone became more useful. Because there were few enough unknown words that I could do step 2 once and click key-unknown words for definitions as i listened, then do step 2 again if i wanted (or just read) and click any detail words i might still be confused on. And then listening to the audiobook-only is my chance to practice the listening comprehension skill (whereas step 3 of L-R method combines that with word-lookup with the english transcript - but i find step 3 more mentally draining than doing step 2 then just listening to audio alone at least rn). Maybe I’m just trying to see how ‘lazy’ i can do L-R Method and still get it to do something useful. (I mean at this point step 2 and audio is just regular listening to an audiobook while reading or without reading lol, not L-R method specifically).
Also, again, the way I did step 2 and step 3 of L-R method with Pleco is really compatible with about anything you want to read. For me: I usually go to ximalaya or youtube or 123music (right now SPL, MoDu, 2ha are all audiobooks on youtube), and use that audio for step 2. I listen to that audio while reading the chinese text in pleco and clicking any key unknown words. Then for step 3 I click “dictate” in Pleco and try to listen to the words as I see the english definitions pop up. Doing step 3 this way means the translation is word-by-word, which is sometimes easier, and you don’t need to find a translation or make sure the translation includes the same sentences. The downside using pleco for step 3 of course is if there’s a nice translation you can’t use it (like for MoDu I still want to read the edanglars translation because its so good, same with 2ha and SPL), or you can just use it instead of Pleco. Also the voice for step 3 is not a natural speaker. Upside of using pleco for this is translation matches perfectly, audio can be paused and replayed for step 3, for shadowing, and your audio is always lined up perfectly with text. (I suppose step 1 could always use the literary translation if you like it - which is what I’ve been doing, but its harder for me to use the literary translation for step 3 because i often get the audio out of sync with the text and get lost :/ ). Also an upside - you don’t technically need a translation or an audiobook - just any chinese text you like.

Some notes to myself:
L-R Method mentioned doing step 2 and 3, up to 3 times. Especially step 3.
I definitely see the reason for that now. A few months ago I watched a korean learner youtuber who really believed in ‘re-listening’ to material 20+ times. A LOT more than I ever listen to stuff lol. But I do notice the more I listen to Guardian chapters, the more I comprehend - ESPECIALLY when I do L-R Method first since I have on some level ‘studied’ all the words I’m listening to beforehand so overall its ‘comprehensible input’ I just have to keep listening long enough to comprehend more and more. (Also to some extent this happens when re-listening to audio of chinese shows I’ve seen before with eng subs or chinese subs like Guardian and Word of Honor).
Since L-R Method includes reading in step 2, I’ve realized the more I do step 2 the more words I recognize/sentences I more fully comprehend, etc. If I do step 2 twice then the second time I notice more nuance and figure out more words particular nuances (just from prior context helping me grasp the material better). If I do step 2 twice and have read the chapter 1-3 times, again the more I’ve read or step 2-done the chapter, the more words/sentence I understand clearly. I definitely think re-doing a chapter over and over until you understand it as much as you can has benefit - or redoing a book over and over during a few weeks (how the L-R Method maker did it). I both do L-R method too slow, and get too bored, to do something like that reliably. But its pretty easy to do step 2 or 3 again for a chapter i liked or wanted to understand better. Or to listen to the audiobook in the background a few times after doing step 2 or 3, as I do other things during the day. And I think the repeated exposure to the ‘newly figured out words’ helps them get clearer and clearer, and easier to remember.
Even the new method I saw recently, the Re-Reading Technique, is basically several steps of re-listening and rereading the same material to comprehend it/engage with it more each time.

Fate and Phantasms #39: Sasaki Kojirou
Today on Fate and Phantasms, we’re building the savior of France himself, Sasaki Kojirou. He may be an assassin, but Sasaki prefers honorable duels, so this build is mostly fighter with a dash of rogue for flavor. His impeccable swordplay makes him a terror in close-range combat.

Race and Background
Like many servants, Sasaki Kojirou is a Human, giving him +1 to all stats. In Fate, the man who would become Kojirou very explicitly came from nothing and did not gain fame in his life, but the historical Kojirou founded the Ganryuu school of sword fighting. This would put his background closest to the Mercenary Veteran, with an altered feat regarding knowledge of other sword fighting schools rather than mercenary companies. This gives Sasaki proficiency in Athletics and Persuasion.
Stats
Sasaki’s swordplay is absolute, so he needs his Dexterity as high as possible. He also has a keen eye for detail, so his Wisdom is next. After that is Strength, his power comes from technique, but he can still have conventional power too. Following that is his Constitution, he can camp out in front of a temple for ages so he’s got to be a little tough. He’s a pretty easygoing person, letting others dominate the conversation, so his Charisma is a little low. We’re dumping Intelligence, though. The man who became Sasaki never got an education, and all his focus went into mastering an impossible skill, which for anyone else would have been a terrible life choice.
Levels
1. Rogue 1: We’re starting off the build as a rogue, because they have more skills and saves that we want. Speaking of, you’re proficient in Dexterity and Intelligence saves as well as Acrobatics, Perception, Insight, and Stealth when you start level one. You also have Expertise in two skills, doubling your proficiency bonus in Stealth and Perception. You learn to Sneak Attack, dealing extra damage to creatures you have advantage against or who’re dealing with other people, and Thieves’ Cant, a language that thieves know.
2. Rogue 2: Second level rogues become more nimble with a Cunning Action, letting you use your bonus action to Dash, Disengage, or Hide. This is probably why you can walk away from Saber without causing an attack of opportunity, then immediately jump back into the action when Archer tries to ruin things.
3. Rogue 3: At third level you get your subclass, the Assassin. I know, the assassin class, full of assassins? Wild. When you take the subclass, you get proficiency with the Disguise Kit and Poisoner’s Kit, two things you aren’t going to use, because you like a fair fight. You also learn how to Assassinate, giving you advantage against creatures who haven’t taken a turn yet, and any hit you score on surprised creatures are auto-crits. Even in a duel, killing someone before they can even draw their sword is a pretty good idea.
4. Fighter 1: Speaking of fair fights, let’s make sure you can survive one. First level fighters get a Fighting Style, and we’re dipping into Tasha’s Cauldron to grab Blind Fighting, giving you 10 feet of blindsight. This lets you fight dramatically in the moonlight without being so gauche as to have Darkvision. Fighting someone else without darkvision will also give you straight up advantage, so dramatic moonlight duels are a great thing to invest in. You also gain a Second Wind, a bonus action you can use once per short rest to heal yourself. Finally, fighters can use any weapon they like, so you can pick up the closest thing to a katana that still has finesse, a scimitar.
5. Fighter 2: You gain one use of Action Surge per short rest, giving you an additional action in a single turn. You don’t get another sneak attack, but more chances to use it is never a bad deal.
6. Fighter 3: At third level you become a Samurai, gaining proficiency in History thanks to the grail helping you out. You also have a Fighting Spirit, a bonus action that you can use three times per day, giving you advantage on all attacks that turn and 5 temporary hit points.
7. Fighter 4: With your first ASI you become Mobile, adding 10′ to your movement speed, letting you dash through difficult terrain, and making it harder for enemies you hit to hit back when you run away.
8. Fighter 5: You get an extra attack, so now you can attack twice per turn, or four times with your action surge.
9. Fighter 6: The Alert feat makes you really good at guarding places, and also really good in general, adding a flat 5 to your initiative rolls, preventing you from ever being surprised, and preventing creatures from having advantage on you because you can’t see them. This means if you’re fighting where people have difficulty seeing -the dark of night, a chaotic battlefield, a smoke-filled burning building- you’ll have advantage on your attacks and they’ll have disadvantage. It’s not unfair if you’re just that good.
10. Fighter 7: Seventh level samurai become Elegant Courtiers. This lets you add your wisdom modifier to persuasion checks, and you become proficient in Wisdom saves. You’re a pretty calm guy, and you managed to talk your way out of getting murdered by the seven heroic swordsmen multiple times.
11. Fighter 8: It’s time we started using these Ability Score Improvements for ability scores. Use this one on your Dexterity for more and harder hits.
12. Fighter 9: You become Indomitable, letting you reroll failed saves once per long rest.
13. Fighter 10: You have a Tireless Spirit, so if you start combat with zero fighting spirits remaining, you get one more. Also, your fighting spirit improves at this level, and now gives you 10 temporary hit points.
14. Fighter 11: Your Swallow Reversal gains its third sword with another Extra Attack. Now you can hit people six times per turn if you really want to.
15. Rogue 4: Use your next ASI to round out your Wisdom and Constitution. More wisdom means better saves against illusions and mind control, and more constitution means you’ll survive long enough to enjoy that.
16. Rogue 5: You can now react to make an Uncanny Dodge, halving the damage of an attack that hits you. We’re not sticking around as a rogue long enough for proper evasion, so this and Mobile are the best you’re getting.
17. Fighter 12: Your next ASI maxes out your Dexterity for better hits and better not-getting-hits.
18. Fighter 13: You gain a second use of Indomitable per long rest, because being that cool once per day isn’t enough for you.
19. Fighter 14: Use your last ASI for more Wisdom, because you’ve got to be really in tune with yourself to do the impossible.
20. Fighter 15: With your capstone level, your Fighting Spirit improves once again, now adding 15 temporary hit points to your pool. You also learn how to Rapid Strike, allowing you to split an attack you have advantage on into two attacks once per turn. You should have advantage on almost every attack you make by this point, and even if you don’t, you can just give yourself advantage anyway. The extra attack will also probably have advantage.
Pros: This build is dead simple to fight with: slice the other person until they stop moving. You’re fast enough to close the gap quickly, are hard to hit thanks to your high dex and mobility, and you abuse advantage rules to their absolute limit. If you don’t mind bending your character a bit, ask that nice ninja kid to lend you some of his smoke bombs (or an eversmoking bottle) and become a god on the battlefield.
Cons: This build, like Sasaki himself, only focuses on swordplay. Anything that can fly (ironically) or resists nonmagical damage is going to give you a hard time. Also, using the build to its fullest extent with items like the eversmoking bottle or spells like darkness and fog cloud means there’s going to be a radius around you at all times that the rest of the party can’t function in, which might cause some hurt feelings.
But you’re not here for their feelings, you’re here to use a sword really, really well. Just go out there and be the best you you can b-

Let’s see...
I do not like writing fight scenes. Fight scenes are HARD. My biggest concern in this one was having them lose believably.
Her mother's Shadow wasted no time, but immediately blurred and distorted and dammit, they'd never been ambushed by a Palace ruler before—
"Get ready to defend!" Yusuke yelled to Hifumi. Dammit, she should have had him take the Snuff Soul after all—
"The floor!" Hifumi yelped.
Asherah is, per Wikipedia, strongly associated with trees in the Bible. That’s the main inspiration for the Shadow’s form. I can’t remember how I came up with the rootlets on the floor, but I may have wanted a reason to have everyone playing ‘the floor is lava’ BESIDES all the little jars of Greek fire.
From the safety of Prometheus, Futaba looked down. There were — tendrils, spreading across the floor, twining around the clutter. She didn't want to follow them back, but did anyway, to see them thicken and join into — roots.
"You shouldn't be here!"
Her mother's Shadow was a tree.
Or. An Ent. Except the Ents in the movies only acted like they had two arms and decorative branches, as opposed to all the branches acting like arms, which really made more sense even though it was harder to fight, and really most of the Shadows they'd fought had been more grotesque, this was nothing really—
Asherah, Prometheus informed her. Strengths and weaknesses currently unknown.
It still had her mother's face.
I think the body horror is getting to Futaba just a bit. She wouldn’t care, if it wasn’t her mother.
Below, both Yusuke and Hifumi had managed to get clear of the roots — Yusuke was standing on a plinth, Hifumi balancing on a stone lion-dog. Yusuke was adjusting one of his boots. The rootlets were waving up at them from the floor, but not achieving any elevation gains.
One thing I enjoyed writing was specifying what features of the ridiculously cluttered and clashingly-furnished room they were standing on while playing ‘the floor is rootlets’.
One of the higher branches trembled, then lowered, and shook, and then Yusuke and Hifumi were being hit with a volley of acorns that did gun damage. Not too bad, but… not negligible, either.
"No info on weaknesses yet, guys," she said anxiously. "Just… be careful?" She really didn't need to worry, it wasn't like anything they'd done to the Palace-ruling Shadows in monster form had hurt the people—
How DOES that work, anyway?
"Fox, try ice," Hifumi said. "I'm going to stick to my bow for now… getting in close enough for melee doesn't seem practical."
Futaba assessed the results. "Resists ranged weapons, but it's not doing nothing… ice is connecting, but it's not a weakness." She'd thought ice might do more damage to a tree… but the weakness was probably fire. Not that that did them any good. Damn it, and Mona had mentioned something about tools that did elemental damage, but Futaba didn't know anything more about them because Akira had never used any when she was around because he could just use whichever Persona was needed…
Damn Wild Cards...
A different branch reached down, and out, and hit Yusuke with a melee attack which he managed to counter. The branch recoiled.
"How did you get all the way up here?" Asherah demanded.
"We climbed a lot of ladders," Hifumi said, and tried wind.
What kind of a stupid question is that, there are ladders everywhere. How did you get IN, that’s a better question.
"Same as ice, neither a strength nor a weakness," Futaba reported.
Yusuke did more damage with a stronger spell. "I need the Snuff Soul to keep this up."

Hifumi managed to evade another cloud of flowers by jumping from the lion-dog to a stack of books to a creepily smiling statue. "Oracle? What's this now?"

Hifumi got off another volley of arrows before she had to run from the flowers again — statue to reliquary to another lion-dog to Yusuke's plinth, to give him a hand up. "I'm not sure he shouldn't save his magic for the ice attacks, they're the only thing doing any meaningful damage!"
"Yes, but he's going to need agility to jump around avoiding the sleep attacks so he can use the ice attacks!"
Hifumi is the combat strategist, Futaba is the Metaverse-experienced person and does more logistics, and Yusuke mostly does what they tell him.
"I'm right here," Yusuke said mildly. He went with the agility buffs, and just in time — more flowers, and they had to run in opposite directions.
"Stop fighting — I don't wish to hurt you!"
"Sorry, Mom's Shadow," Futaba muttered, "not gonna take your word for that."
It genuinely does not want to hurt them, but honestly I wouldn’t trust it not to hurt them by accident even if they weren’t fighting.
The battle didn't improve from there, although not in the usual way. Asherah stuck to attacking with the sleep flowers, which it was easy to see coming and which could be evaded — assuming there was something other than the rootlet-covered floor to jump to. The most damage either of them took was when Hifumi slipped off an urn and landed on one of the smashable fire pots. She wasn't on fire for very long, thanks to Yusuke's questionable but effective use of an ice spell and the Shadow using a recovery spell on her, but it put enough of a dent in her health that she had to use a remedy.
If they weren’t so exhausted and nervous, they’d probably be commenting more on how it’s a really ridiculous-looking fight. The room looks ridiculous, they’re playing ‘the floor is lava’ on really tacky statues, the enemy is healing them... But the fight isn’t going well, so they’re focused on trying to turn it around.
Asherah just wasn't taking much damage, either. A few windtorn twigs, some marks in the bark from arrows or bullets, an ice gouge or three — not nothing — but it wasn't like they'd be able to keep this up indefinitely! Prometheus could do some magic restoration, but it wasn't keeping up!
"Say the word if you see a chance to get out, Shade," Futaba said finally. Running from a Palace-ruler fight felt all kinds of wrong, but it wasn't like they'd sent a calling card that would wear off.
"I've been looking," Hifumi replied tightly.
…Not good.
"Stop fighting!"
The first time Hifumi got hit with the sleep flowers, she managed to sort of drape herself over the statue whose plinth she was sharing and avoid falling to the floor — which was great as far as not being tied up by rootlets and having to try to cut her way loose with a naginata, but on the other hand the fall would have woken her up. It took Futaba several tries to muster a recovery spell to get rid of the sleep. In the meantime, Yusuke had the Shadow's complete attention and had to devote himself completely to dodging — no counterattacks, no agility buffs, no arginade. He was running out of places to jump to when Futaba managed to get Hifumi awake to distract Asherah with another attack. From her dwindling ammunition supply.
I think if they’d had even one more active combatant to split the Shadow’s attention they might have won.
Futaba had kind of been thinking they had until Yusuke ran out of magic to come up with something, but it was beginning to look like they'd be lucky to make it that long.

Can I get some clarification about "aplatonic"? I've read your tag on it but am still confused. Do aplatonic people still need social interaction? Do they need emotional bonds in some form to be happy? I thought these were universal needs but aplatonic people seem to prove this false. I might have some self esteem issues because I feel sort of guilty about needing that sense of connection to be happy if it's something people can not need, if that makes sense? I hope this wasn't irritating

I’m going to answer your questions because I know most people are likely baffled by aplatonicism. I know because I could not wrap my head around what it must be like before I myself was aplatonic.
However, I’m going to address something else first, because you don’t seem to really be asking these clarifications out of a genuine sense of curiosity and desire to get to understand aplatonic better in order to support your aplatonic family (hi!).
Something does not need to be a universal need, desire, or want in order for it to be a valid need, desire, or want that you have.
It doesn’t matter how I or any other aplatonic person feels in regards to if something you feel or want is valid. We do not control that. We do not hold some omnipresent power to validate or invalidate you.
Gay folk are valid even though some folk are straight. Bisexual folk are valid even though some folk are gay or straight. Trans folk are valid even though some folk are cis. Cultural-specific third genders are valid even though those genders don’t exist in other cultures.
Your desire for connection and bond and relationships is valid regardless of people who are aplatonic and nonamorous, whatever their own personal feelings about relationships.
This feeling of guilt you have over needing and wanting connection and bonds with others is absolutely an issue you should address in yourself. It is not healthy to beat yourself up over your own needs and wants. It is not harmful to want or to have relationships. Therefore feeling guilty over it absolutely has basis in something unhealthy in yourself that is hurting you. Please find a way to address and work on this in yourself. If you’re in a place where you can, this is exactly something you can work on addressing with a therapist or counselor. If not, try an app like Pacifica that can help you learn CBT techniques to keep mindful and treat yourself well.
It is healthy to prioritize your needs and wants. People are diverse and complex. We do not all need the same things as one another, nor do we have to need the same things.

It is also valid that my sister feels lonely in her dietary choice even though I’ve never mocked her choice and always make sure there’s food for her at my place or any place we may meet up because it’s true that as someone with a far less restricted diet, I don’t understand the daily struggle to check every piece of food around to see if it can be consumed or not.
My friend deeply wants a child and is working hard with her husband to have one, including going through their options, as due to her health, pregnancy may be out of the question. I do not want to raise children at all. I do not need to want to have children for my friend’s desire to be valid.
People need and want different things all the time. There is nothing inherently wrong about this. When it’s wrong is when it’s hurting someone, and right now the only one being hurt is you for not allowing yourself to have feelings and desires. Of course we all want and even need validation at times, even when the choice is ours alone to make. But you shouldn’t need validation that 100% of people feel exactly the same way as you to allow yourself to feel a way.
Your guilt is unnecessary, and it breaks my heart that your brain would trick you into treating yourself like this.
You want connection and relationships? That’s valid. You’re valid. Go forth and foster connection and relationships. And don’t forget to work on learning to let go of that unnecessary and harmful guilt that you’re harboring. You deserve better than that.
Now, to try and briefly answer the questions you asked (because I don’t want to take away too much from the above):

Depends on the person.
First off, unless you’re a hermit (and even then, it’s not guaranteed you’ll never run into anybody), it’s nigh impossible to go without any social interaction whatsoever. There’s a lot of ways to get social interaction without having close friendships: shopping and interacting with a salesperson or cashier, smalltalk with people in an elevator you’re riding in, familial relationships, talking or even going out with coworkers, interacting with customers if that’s a part of your job, playing games online with folk, participating in forums and blogs, volunteering and helping people out, catching up with an acquaintance, going to classes to learn a new skill/forming a study group, joining a gym with group classes, etc.
Emotional bonds can also be formed in a variety of ways. You can have a bond with your pets. An aplatonic person may also have a variety of other bonds. Familial bonds. Sexual bonds. Queerplatonic bonds.
Aplatonic means a lack of desire/difficulty forming platonic relationships. That’s it.
Some aplatonic folk may really struggle for form platonic relationships/bonds but may desperately want to. Some aplatonic folk may not really have friends but when they start getting to know someone well, that person goes from acquaintance straight to family. Some aplatonic people are not nonamorous/nonpartnered and may desire or have a queerplatonic partner.
For me, I’m pretty exhausted by the whole state of things. Yet, I have bimonthly dinners with my sister because I love her and it’s ridiculous that we live in the same city and almost never see each other otherwise. I started the dinners to improve the relationship I felt we had, since I think she feels like we can’t do anything together. Yet, I have a good relationship with my coworker. I work in an office with just him (our bosses are in another state), so a good relationship with him keeps things running smoothly and comfortably. Yet, I go out with my coworker and his wife (who is actually my friend from HS) because a) I had a close friendship with her before I became aplatonic and I still care deeply for her, b) it helps get me out of the house and I do usually have fun, and c) I know they appreciate it and I like making people happy. Yet, I still go to muay thai two times a week and chat with my instructor and laugh and talk with people I spar with because that’s a part of going to a group class, and I genuinely enjoy the atmosphere of the class and the attitude of the people that attend.
I don’t really have anybody in my life that I trust to tell or want to tell some of the deeper, more personal things about me, especially the bad stuff I’ve been through and being currently without healthcare, I can’t talk through these things with a therapist. Sometimes I do get lonely and hate that I’m this way. It’s scary that if something happened to me, I wouldn’t know who to call for help. Sometimes I just want to share, but I don’t feel I have anyone that I can do that with, and I don’t have the energy to put time forth fostering a relationship in which I could. And on the whole, I prefer to be independent, even though it makes some things harder.
We’re all human. We all have struggles. We all have our weaknesses. Some people may be happier and more confident being aplatonic than others are. As is the way of people of all groups. We don’t invalidate each other because we feel differently about our label any more than we invalidate you for not having the same label as us.

How to avoid productivity pitfalls of remote work at COVID-19 crisis

An unexpected COVID-19 pandemic has led to a global rollout of working from home for the last month(s) and some maybe for now too, whether it’s out of personal choices or out of no choices 😂
Although this may be no difference for those who’ve already been used to remote work, like some freelancers. However, for those newcomers to this, like myself, it really could be a complete disaster. Not just the change of workplace, it’s the change of everything: work schedules, collaborative methods, work environment, and more importantly the state of mind. Being at home naturally makes me feel like doing nothing but binge watching Netflix.
I know some of you might experience the same as me. Some others may likewise be struggling with the smell of bread floating up from the kitchen, or unexpected shouts from their kids/parents, while at work.
To prevent these factors from sabotaging the productivity of working at home, here in the following is what I do in this long combat. These six tips so far have made my working-from-home days more productive, organized and also more enjoyable 😉
1. Create an undisturbed work-only space:
This space does not have to be large or fancy. Instead, it could be a kitchen corner less traveled by people you live with, a table behind your bedroom door, or a cleaned-up space in storage/garage. Of course it could be better if it’s by the window, because who doesn’t like a sunbath while working at home? ☀️
Why a separate area for work essential?
- Physically, a relatively quiet place helps prevent distractions from others.
- Mentally, it reminds you that when walking into this area, what you do is only work-related.
2. Dress up in your usual smart look:
I know some would say this is totally unnecessary, but for someone like me who can never work efficiently in pajamas or oversize T-shirts, then dressing yourself up in the usual way before starting work in the morning, will be a good way to quickly get you ready for the shift to a work mode. But make sure it’s not too much, otherwise your mum may think you’re going on the T-stage live stream (or it’s just my mum).
3. Make a simple to-do list:
This might be the most efficient way for me to plan my work and batch different tasks. These lists may be about a recent project, a customer list, a self-learning plan, or anything.
- First, try breaking down a long-run goal in your list into more doable small tasks and link them together if necessary
This is to mitigate difficulty and better activate your motivation.

- Create different folders to collect the lists to keep them right in order
- Remember to mark tasks as completed.
It’s really a huge satisfaction and encouragement being able to see how much progress I’ve made daily or periodically. Yes, even though this encouragement is not from a real person, still, it makes life sweeter 😄
- If necessary, share your lists/tasks with colleagues
In this way they can co-work, edit and comment on your tasks, when it comes to team collaboration.
- At the same time, don’t forget to create lists for family
By separating tasks at work from life, housework or your kids’ homework can also be reasonably dealt with.
4. Schedule your day properly:

A pagan was a man who lived in a "pagus" or small village. Both words in fact meant a rustic or yokel. They date from the time when the larger towns of the Roman Empire were already Christianised, but the old nature religions still lingered in the country. Pagans or heathens were the backward people in the remote districts who had not yet been converted, who were still pre-Christians. To say that modern people who have drifted away from Christianity are pagans is to suggest that a post-Christian man is the same as a pre-Christian man. But that is like thinking that a woman who has lost her husband is the same sort of person as an unmarried girl. Or that a street where the houses have been knocked down is the same as a field where no house has yet been built.
The ruined street and the unbuilt field are alike in one respect, namely that neither will keep you dry if it rains, but they are different in every other respect: rubble, dust, broken bottles, old bedsteads, and stray cats are very different from grass, thyme, clover, buttercups, and the lark singing overhead.
The real pagan differed from the post-Christian in the following ways. Firstly, he was religious. From the Christian point of view, he was indeed too religious by half. He was full of reverence. For him the earth was holy, the woods and waters were alive. His agriculture was a ritual as well as a technique. And secondly, he believed in what we now call "an objective right and wrong". That is, he thought the distinction between pious and impious acts was something that existed independently of human opinions: something like the multiplication table, which man had not invented, but had found to be true, and which he had better take notice of. The gods would punish him if he did not.
To be sure, by Christian standards his list of right and wrong acts was rather a muddled one. He thought (and the Christians agreed) that the gods would punish him for setting the dogs on a beggar who came to his door, or for striking his father. But he also thought they would punish him for turning his face to the wrong point of the compass when he began ploughing. Though his code included some fantastic sins and duties, it got in most of the real ones.
This leads us to the third great difference between a pagan and a post-Christian man. Believing in a real right and wrong means finding out that you are not very good. The pagan code may have been on some points a low one, but it was too high for the pagan to live up to. Hence a pagan, though in many ways merrier than a modern, had a deep sadness. When he asked himself what was wrong with the world, he did not immediately reply "the social system" or "our allies" or "education". It occurred to him that he -- himself -- might be one of the things that was wrong with the world. He knew he had sinned. And the terrible thing was he thought the gods made no difference between voluntary and involuntary sins. You might get into their bad books by mere accident. And once in, it was very hard to get out of them. The pagan dealt with this situation in a rather silly way. His religion was a mass of ceremonies, sacrifices, purifications, et cetera, which were supposed to take away guilt, but they never quite succeeded. His conscience was not at ease.
Now, the post-Christian view which is gradually coming into existence (it is complete already in some people, and still incomplete in others) is quite different. According to it, nature is not a living thing to be reverenced. It is a kind of machine for us to exploit. There is no objective right or wrong. Each race or class can invent its own code or ideology just as it pleases. And whatever may be amiss with the world, it is certainly not we the ordinary people. It is up to God, if after all he should happen to exist, or to government, or to education, to give us what we want. They are the shop, we are the customer, and the customer is always right.
Now if the post-Christian view is the correct one then we have indeed woken from a nightmare. The old fear, the old reverence, the old restraints... how delightful to have woken up into freedom, to be responsible to no one, to be utterly and absolutely our own masters! We have, of course, lost some fun. A universe of colourless electrons (which is presently going to run down and annihilate all organic life everywhere and forever) is, perhaps, a little dreary compared with the earth-mother and the sky-father, the wood nymphs and the water nymphs, chaste Diana riding the night sky and homely Vesta flickering on the hearth. But one can't have everything, and there are always the flicks and the radio: if the new view is correct, it has very solid advantages.
But is it? And if so, why are things not going better? What do you make of the present threat of world famine? We know now it is not entirely due to the war. From country after country comes the same story of failing harvests. Even the whales have less oil. Can it be that nature, or something behind nature, is not simply a machine that we can do what we like with? That she is hitting back? Waive the point. Suppose she is only a machine, and that we are free to master her at our pleasure. Have you not begun to see that man's conquest of nature is really man's conquest of man? That every power wrested from nature is used by some men over other men? Men are the victims, not the conquerors in this struggle. Each new victory over nature yields new means of propaganda to enslave them, new weapons to kill them, new power for the state, and new weakness for the citizen. New contraceptives to keep man from being born at all.
As for ideologies, does no one see the catch? If there is no real wrong and right -- nothing good or bad in itself -- none of these ideologies can be better or worse than another. For a better moral code can only mean one which comes nearer to some real or absolute code. One map of New York can be better than another only if there is a real New York for it to be truer to. If there is no objective standard then our choice between one ideology and another becomes a matter of arbitrary taste. Our battle for democratic ideals against Nazi ideals has been a waste of time, because the one is no better than the other. Nor can there ever be any real improvement or deterioration. If there is no real goal, we can't get any nearer to it, or farther from it. In fact there is no real reason for doing anything at all.
It looks to me, neighbours, as though we shall have to set about becoming true pagans, if only as a preliminary to becoming Christians. I don't mean that we should begin leaving little bits of bread under the tree at the end of the garden as an offering to the dryad. I don't mean that we should dance to Dionysus across Hampstead Heath, though perhaps a little more solemn or ecstatic gaity and a little less commercialised amusement might make our holidays better than they now are. I don't even mean (though I do very much wish) that we should recover that sympathy with nature, that religious attitude to the family, and that appetite for beauty which the better pagans had. Perhaps what I do mean is best put like this: if the modern post-Christian view is wrong (and every day I find it harder to think it right) then there are three kinds of people in the world. 1) Those who are sick and don't know it: the post-Christians. 2) Those who are sick and know it: the pagans. 3) Those who have found the cure.
And if you start in the first class, you must go through the second to reach the third. For (in a sense) all that Christianity adds to paganism is the cure. It confirms the old belief that in this universe we are up against Living Power: that there is a real Right and that we have failed to obey it: that existence is beautiful and terrifying. It adds a wonder of which paganism had not distinctly heard: that the Mighty One has come down to help us, to remove our guilt, to reconcile us. None of this is about my actual skill at the game. If I hadn’t made it that far, it still would have been fun, but what Bandori gave me was far more valuable than a reward for a full combo. It gave me a quick, easily accessible way to see just how dramatically I could improve at something in just a few weeks, in other words, showing how practice could help a skill develop in a short enough timeframe that such progress was undeniable.
