I achieved a lot of things this year, and even though I'd never had enough tolerance to love this weak and hopeless self, just for today I will give me a word of encouragement and a hug for all the achievements that I had to struggle to achieve.

For only one day let's hope I'll be gentle with myself, to brace myself for another year of struggle to come.

phoenix runs his hand through miles's hair and smiles into his chest as a movie plays in the background. he says, "what even are we watching, miles?"

miles raises an eyebrow and looks indignantly at him, replying, "the polar express, wright. what else would we possibly watch during the holidays?" his tone is heavy and sharp, but underneath it is a heart full of adoration.

"we could literally watch so many things, miles, what are you talking about? home alone, national lampoon's christmas vacation, alvin and the chipmunks..."

miles is silent, eyes narrow, and then he says, "what in christ is alvin in the chipmunks, phoenix?"

phoenix stops everything, sits up. stops smiling. his mouth is open, and he's looking at miles in raw horror. he grabs the remote from beside them and says, "oh my fuck, we are watching it right now."

miles's face is still, and he sighs heavily. "i would prefer to at least finish the polar express first, wright."

"no. absolutely not. you not having seen alvin and the chipmunks is an actual travesty." phoenix finds it on the tv and clicks on it, then drops the remote and snuggles back into miles's side.

phoenix feels miles sigh again, but as the movie starts and he looks back up at him, miles is looking back at him and smiling softly.

oh, phoenix is so in love with that smile, those eyes, and he pulls a previously irrelevant blanket over himself and miles and pulls him down to put kisses all over his beautiful face.
