Some funny German words that are kind of hard to translate that are also not from the lexicon of obscure sorrows:
- Eigenart, Die. (Noun) Lit: the own-kind, meaning: Quirk
Usage example: "Ach, das ist dem seine Eigenart." (Oh, that's his quirk)
- Verschlimmbessern. (Verb) Lit: Worse-improving, meaning: trying to make something better, but making it worse in the process
Usage example: "Verschlimmbessern kann der gut." (He's great at making things worse while trying to make them better.)
- Sturmfrei. (Adjective) Lit: Storm free, meaning: having the house to yourself because your parents are away
Usage example: "Ich hab das ganze Wochenende sturmfrei." (I have the house to myself the whole weekend)
- Ohrwurm, Der. (Noun) Lit: Ear Worm, meaning: a song you can't get out of your head
Usage example: "Das Lied ist seit drei Tagen mein Ohrwurm." (That song has been playing on repeat in my head for three days)

Important backstory is:
The Ungarndeutsche/Donauschwaben came to the land after the the country reunited. Hungary was partitioned into 3 parts; the Kingdom of Hungary (which was independent in theory, but in practise it was a Habsburg colony), the Hódoltság/Ottoman Hungary, and the Principality of Transylvania.
Long story short, Habsburgs """liberated""" Hungary in 1699 (nearly after 150 years) the country reunited, except Transylvania which remained semi-independent until 1867. The old territory of Ottoman Hungary was basically destroyed, with drastically little amount of citizens remaining. Now, Schwabs arrived mostly under Maria Theresia's regime, but even before and after her. The reason for this was exactly the destruction I wrote about, and they were brought in with good-sounding promises of properties, and living duty free for a few years and such which were given to them, but their conditions were still next to unlivable. The best which can describe their situation was this little poem:
"Die ersten kriegen den Tod
Die zweiten die Not
Und erst die dritten das Brot."
(The firsts will get the death/ the seconds the need/and first the thirds the bread)
Meaning, only the third generation will be well off enough to eat regulary.
They mainly inhabited the "Schwäbische Türkei" (Swabian Turkey) aka nowadays' Transdanubia, mainly the counties of Baranya, Tolna, and Somogy. An odd one out, because it's in the Danube-Tisza Interfluve, but Bács-Kiskun county is another hot-spot of them. This day, it sure is, because the biggest and most prestigious school institution - or rather, institution centre - of Ungarndeutsche can be found there.
There is another version of our coat of arms but I like this one more, and it is also the more common one.
Also the culture of Ungarndeutsche is reeeeaally rich and sadly it's quite forgotten and not at all mentioned. Like we even have an anthem and shit lol (and it's very beautiful indeed even if I have a complicated relationship with it along with my ethnicity)
The ethnic minority question is not at all discussed in Hetalia while it's one of the most important historical questions, especially in Eastern/Balkan Europe, so I was like why not show it to people! Schwabs (and other Germans) are still the second largest minorty group in Hungary, and one of the 13 acknowledged nationalities in Hungary, although they are slowly assimilating to Hungarians.
(Because in Hungarian law acknowledged nationalities, and other ethnic minorities are differentiated.)
A radical decline in their numbers were of course after ww2, and most of Schwabs were sent into Siberia (even if they never set a foot in Germany), and they were forbidden to speak German. My family was lucky to stay here, but for example my grandfather can't speak German anymore and my mother and her siblings never learnt it, just me and my cousins (because we were all born after communism). My grandpa's siblings live in an another village nearby, but they speak Schwabish dialect at home, not Hungarian, because there are multiple Schwabisch families that live there, while our village is homogeneous. So the place really matters in assimilation. But like city names are still written out in German in many places.
I hope I managed to teach something new with the second part of this coat of arms series! :DD

Bei dem Bild muss nichts nachbearbeitet werden. Es spricht für sich. Was wie ein infernalisches Höllenfeuer aus der Ferne in die Erreichbarkeit hineinzuragen scheint, ist nur die Beleuchtung einer öffentlichen Anlage. Einzig Möwen spektakulieren spät abends dort herum. Die novemberschwangeren Bäume muten in dieser Szene hitchcockartig an. Es passt zu dem, was ich heute Abend erlebte. Ich mag die Tatsache der Vergänglichkeit. Sie hat so etwas Verzeihendes, die Vergänglichkeit. Aber die Vergänglichkeit zu erleben ist halt auch im November etwas, was erst einmal verdaut werden will. Daher liebe ich Bilder wie dieses. Ich kenne das Ambiente. Ich staune über das Abbild. Eine Abwägung davon, was beides auslöst, Ambiente, wie Abbild, eingebettet in das zeitgenössische Herbstbewusstsein, garniert mit massiven realen Beispielen über die Tatsächlichkeit des Vergänglichen, fällt am Ende tröstlich aus. Das Türgleichnis, von wegen eine Tür ist zu, die andere ist offen, das hilft. Das hilft sehr...

Nothing needs to be edited in the picture. It speaks for itself. What seems to be reaching into reach from afar like an infernal hellfire is just the lighting of a public facility. Only seagulls are circling around there late in the evening. The November-pregnant trees in this scene look like Hitchcock. It fits with what I experienced this evening. I like the fact of transience. There is something so forgiving about transience. But experiencing transience is something that needs to be digested first, even in November. That's why I love pictures like this. I know the atmosphere. I am amazed by the image. A consideration of what triggers both, the atmosphere and the image, embedded in the contemporary autumn consciousness, garnished with massive real examples of the reality of transience, is comforting in the end. The door analogy, about one door being closed and the other open, that helps. That helps a lot...

Okay so I just hustled me up a poorly scanned PDF of the 1907 Library of Early Novelists reprint of the 1796 novel, "The Monk: A Romance," by Matthew Gregory Lewis, and sis
the introduction is the shadiest shit I have ever read in a work of classic literature, my lord.
It may be admitted at once that this erst belauded romance has little claim to perpetuation on its own merits. Only disappointment awaits anyone who has taken too seriously the praise bestowed by his contemporaries on Lewis [the author]'s supposed gifts of powerful and unearthly imagination, and has been deceived by the story of his sudden leap to fame ... into fancying The Monk in any way a great book. ... There is food for thought in the case of a man of mere average ability who, on the strength of one crude production written in his teens, was able to find publishers and a market for a miscellaneous series of works that would daunt the hardihood of the most indefatigable researcher to read now ... ... [Lewis was] born rich, he never had to face adversity in any shape, unless we except the differences between his father and mother, in which he took his mother's part, and had his pocket money reduced as a consequence. ... a good-natured, insignificant young man, who never made an enemy; a man who shone in private life, was kind to his slaves, and never had a brilliant idea in his life. ... One of the most superlative gifts of the literary mind is the faculty of reticence, the instinct that tells what to omit. Lewis' particular gift was the negation of reticence... ... An excellent example of Lewis' contrarious reading of the rules of good writing is [editor continues on to describe Lewis' other work, particularly alleging that Lewis' earlier success was down to shock comedy, something the editor does not like]. ...

The introduction continues on like this and is of some historical interest for how it (at points very uncharitably) discusses the late 1700s / early 1800s Gothic Romance genre from a very early 1900s smug prick perspective.
It's very booktok, very mid-2010s literature tumblr, very "I'm going to be a screenwriter" kid from that one compulsory creative writing class you had to do in university.

Interesting interview with Klaus Theweleit in the Zeit:
I'm not a huge fan of most of what he says. It's always a bit funny when someone is overly critical of presumptuous attempts at comprehensive explanations of complex world states, only to then fall back on psychoanalysis of all things in order to give an explanation after all. Like, if you are doubting our ability to comprehend the world, psychoanalysis should be near the top of your list of targets to criticise. I just don't think childhood emotional neglect is the satisfying explanation for the rise of the far right and the proliferation of industrialised warfare in recent years Theweleit seems to think it is.
Still, there was a passage I really, really loved:
Das Erste wäre, zu begreifen, dass die eigene Redeposition keine Machtposition ist. Das, was wir ins Private oder ins Literaturhaus hineinreden, kümmert sonst ja keinen Menschen. Das halten die meisten Leute schon nicht aus. Sie wollen, dass das, was sie sagen, bedeutungsvoll ist. Darin steckt der Anspruch einer Machtausübung, der leicht dazu führt, dass alles, was diese Machtausübung stört, unterdrückt wird; zum Beispiel andere Positionen oder die leidigen, sogenannten Widersprüche, die als störend empfunden werden und verschwinden sollen.
Rough translation:
The first thing would be to understand that the own talking position is not a position of power. What we are saying in private contexts or houses of literature does not matter outside of these. Most people can't bear that. They want what they are saying to be meaningful. This contains a pretension to exert power, which easily leads to trying to suppress anything in the way of that exertion of power; for example the positions of others or the annoying so-called contradictions which are perceived as disruptive and which are supposed to disappear.
I really appreciate this invitation to calm down and sit with one's discomfort as an antidote to hasty actionism and to the overeagerness with which so many people declare their rhetorical opponents to be beyond grace. And how part of this discomfort is the own powerlessness, and how a lot of our toxic culture of conflict stems from trying to deny this powerlessness. He does not draw the connection in the interview, but this is of course the way of thinking and acting where the left often mirrors in weaker form what the right has embraced at full throttle.
I still don't think very highly of psychoanalysis, but when it does hit, it hits hard.

Andersens "Kleine Seejungfrau" ist an einer langen Tradition von Wasserfrauen angelegt, die lang ins Mittelalter führt. Von ihnen ist die kleine Meerjungfrau die erste, die sich weigert, den Menschen, der ihr Herz zerbrach, zu töten, und damit von dieser Tradition abbricht. Darum hab ich mir diese Szene ausgedacht, wo die älteren Nixen versuchen die Jüngste zu überzeugen, auch ihren Prinzen zu töten. Hier eine kleine Verdeutlichung:
Links: Melusine, die Wasserfee. Ihr Sagenstoff ist bis ins 12. Jahrhundert verwurzelt und schon im 13. wurde er mit der Adelsfamilie der Lusignans in Verbindung gebracht. Melusine heiratete Raymund unter der Bedingung, er dürfe sie nie Samstags beim Baden zusehen. Natürlich konnte der Ritter der Neugier nicht widerstehen und als er seine Frau mit einem Schlangenleib sah, flog diese davon und nahm Großteil des Glücks, das sie ihm geschenkt hatte, zurück.
Rechts: die Meerfei aus Egenolf von Staufenbergs Rittermäre. Wie viele mittelalterliche Patenfeen beschützte sie den Ritter Peter Diemringer auf dem Schlachtfeld. Sie verliebte sich und nahm eine heimliche Ehe mit ihm auf, doch er ließ sich vom Kaiser überzeugen und verließ den Wassergeist für die königliche Muhme. Zur Hochzeit stieß die Meerfei ihren Fuß durch die Decke und sagte ihm seinen Tod vor. In vielen Verdichtungen wird auch sie Melusine genannt.
Oben: Undine aus Friedrich de la Motte Foucqués Erzählung. Name und Handlung stammen aus Paracelsus Buch um Elementargeistern, die auch sein Kommentar auf die Staufenberger Sage enthält. Undine ist die Nixe, die der kleinen Meerjungfrau am ähnlichsten ist und auch sie hätte ihren geliebten nicht umgebracht, wenn ihre Familie sie nicht dazu gezwungen hätte. Benjamin Lacombes Illustrationen davon sind unheimlich schön.
Andersen's "little Seamaid" is radicated in a long tradition of heartbroken waterwomen, that goes back to the Middle Ages. Of them the little mermaid is the first who refuses to kill the human that broke her heart, thus splitting from that tradition. That's how I came up with this idea, of the older nixies trying to convince the youngest to follow their example and kill her prince as well. Here some more info on them:
Left: Melusine, the water fairy. Her legend stems from the 12th century and was already connected to the family of Lusignan by the 13th. Melusine married Raymund under the condition, that he would never see her bathe on a saturday. Naturally he couldn't resist his curiosity, and thus saw her exposed snakebody, which made her fly away, taking with her all the luck she had gifted him.
Right: the Merfey, from Egenolf von Stauffenberg's chivalric poem. Like many medieval fairy godmothers, her job was to aid the knight Peter Dimringer in battle, yet she fell in love with him and married in secret. However the knight was convinced by the emperor to reject the water sprite and remarry the royal aunt/cousin. The Merfey burst with her foot through the ceiling at the wedding, and foretold Peter his death in three days. In many adaptations her name is given as Melusine.
Up: Undine, from Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué's novella. Name and plot are taken from Paracelsus book on elementals, which also contained his commentary on the legend of Stauffenberg. Undine is the closest related to the little mermaid, and she too would have refused to kill her love, hadn't her family forced her to. I was inspired here by Benjamin Lacombe's wonderful illustrations.
"La Sirenetta" di Andersen va a pescare da una lunga tradizione di tragiche donne acquatiche, che ha le sue radici nel medioevo. Tra queste, la giovane sirena è la prima a rifiutarsi di uccidere l'uomo che le spezzò il cuore, rompendo così con la tradizione. Da qui mi è venuta l'idea per questa scena, dove le sirene più antiche cercano di convincere anche la più giovane ad ammazzare il suo principe. Ecco un po' di informazioni:
A sinistra: Melusina, la fata delle acque. La sua leggenda nasce nel XII secolo e già nel XIII fu ricondotta alla nobile famiglia di Lusignan. Melusina sposò Raimondo, a condizione che lui non la vedesse mai fatsi il bagno di sabato. Ovviamente lui non resisté alla curiosità e quando vide la moglie col corpo di serpente, lei scappò, portando via con se la fortuna che gli aveva donato.
A destra: la Fata Marina, dal poema cavalleresco di Egenolf von Staufenberg. Come molte fate madrine medievali, era incaricata di guidare e proteggere un cavaliere, Peter Dimringer, in battaglia. Ma si innamorò del mortale e lo sposò segretamente. Furono felici finché l'imperatore non convinse il cavaliere a lasciare lo spririto delle acque per sposare la zia/cugina di famiglia reale. La Fata Marina sfondò il soffitto della sala col piede al matrimonio e predisse allo sposo la morte entro tre giorni. In molte versioni della storia viene chiamata anche lei Melusina
In alto: Ondina, dalla fiaba d'autore di Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué. Nome e trama sono tratti dal libro di Paracelso sugli spiriti elementari, nel quale è anche contenuto un commento alla leggenda di Staufenberg. Ondina è la ninfa più simile alla sirenetta di Andersen, e infatti anche lei non avrebbe ucciso il suo amore, se la sua famiglia non l'avesse obbligata

das sp!t - queer_feministischer raum in basel, braucht eure unterstützung!
wir hatten ein tolles jahr im sp!t mit vielen neuen und alten gesichtern in der feministischen bibliothek, an treffen, sitzungen und sonstigen veranstaltungen.
schön bist du auch dabei <3
all die organisationsarbeit für das sp!t ist und bleibt unbezahlt. wir freuen uns sehr, dass dieses jahr viele neue menschen beim sp!t und bei der feministischen bibliothek mithelfen.
leider kostet raum geld. die miete für das sp!t ist 600 franken im monat.
365 franken im monat erhalten wir aktuell durch daueraufträge von ungefähr 10 menschen.
zusätzlich erhalten wir geld durch einzelne überweisungen, spenden bei öffnungszeiten der feministischen bibliothek, sonstigen veranstaltungen und treffen.
da dies alles die miete nicht deckt, haben wir und einige andere gruppen soli-veranstaltungen gemacht.
momentan ist geld da für 4 monatsmieten, das heisst bis und mit april 2024.
🌱🌳🌈 ziel ist, dass die miete durch viele menschen und kleine monatliche oder jährliche beträge bezahlt werden, das gibt viel sicherheit und entlastet. wir wünschen uns ungefähr 3 -10 CHF pro monat pro person, die es sich leisten kann. vielverdiener*innen und vermögende bezahlen gerne mehr. 🌱🌳🌈
falls je soviel gespendet würde, dass geld für mehr als ein halbes jahr (boa, das wär ja schöööön) auf dem konto ist, haben wir viele ideen für workshops, zum beispiel zu anti-rassismus, und falls noch mehr geld da ist (waaaaaas, das wär der hammer!), würden wir darüber informieren und andere kollektive vorschlagen an die ihr euer geld spenden könntet.

we had a wonderful year at sp!t with many new and many familiar faces in the feminist library, at meetings, sessions and other events.
we are so happy that you are part of it too <3
all the organizational work for sp!t is and remains unpaid. we are very glad that so many new people are helping with sp!t and the feminist library this year.
unfortunately, our space costs money. the rent for the sp!t is 600 francs per month.
we currently receive 365 francs each month through permanent donations from approximately 10 people.
in addition, we receive money through individual transfers, donations during the opening hours of the feminist library, other events and meetings.
since none of this covers the rent, we and some other groups have organized soli events.
at the moment, the rent is covered for the next 4 months, up until april 2024.
🌱🌳🌈 the aim is for the rent to be paid by as many people as possible, through small monthly or annual amounts, which gives a lot of security and brings relief. we would love to receive around CHF 3-10 per month per person who can afford it. high earners and the wealthy are welcome to pay more. 🌱🌳🌈
if there is ever enough money to cover the rent for more than half a year (boa, that would be amazing), we have lots of ideas for workshops, for example on anti-racism, and if there is more money (whaaat, that would be awesome!), we would inform you and suggest other collectives you can donate your money to.

nous avons eu une année formidable à sp!t avec beaucoup de nouvelles et d'anciennes connaissances à la bibliothèque féministe, aux rencontres, aux réunions et aux autres événements.
c'est super que tu sois là aussi <3
tout le travail d'organisation pour l'espace est et reste non payant. nous sommes très content.e.s que cette année beaucoup de nouvelles personnes aident à l'espace et à la bibliothèque féministe.
malheureusement, l'espace coûte de l'argent. le loyer pour le sp!t est de 600 fr par mois.
Nous recevons actuellement 365 francs par mois grâce aux commandes permanentes d'environ 10 personnes.
De plus, nous recevons de l'argent par des virements individuels, des dons lors des heures d'ouverture de la bibliothèque féministe, d'autres événements et rencontres.

si jamais il y a assez de dons pour qu'il y ait de l'argent sur le compte pour plus de six mois (boa, ce serait chouette), nous avons plein d'idées pour des ateliers, par exemple sur l'antiracisme, et s'il y a encore plus d'argent ( whaou, ce serait génial !), nous en informerions et proposerions d'autres collectifs à qui vous pourriez donner votre argent.

Schwitters composed and performed an early example of sound poetry, Ursonate (1922–1932; a translation of the title is Original Sonata or Primeval Sonata). The poem was influenced by Raoul Hausmann's poem "fmsbw" which Schwitters heard recited by Hausmann in Prague, 1921. Schwitters first performed the piece on 14 February 1925 at the home of Irmgard Kiepenheuer in Potsdam. He subsequently performed it regularly, both developing and extending it. He published his notations for the recital in the last Merz periodical in 1932, although he would continue to develop the piece for at least the next ten years.

Es gibt ja Menschen. Ich zum Beispiel bin ein Mensch. Ich als menschliche Daseinsform lebe mit Menschen zusammen, teils freiwillig zugeneigt, teils freiwillig produziert. Andere Menschen sind allein Mensch. Ich bin auch allein Mensch, bin aber selbstgewählt Mensch unter Menschen. Manche Menschen scheinen gefühlt immer alleine Mensch. Faktisch leben sie in einem größer gefassten, gedachten Raum mit vielen Menschen und bilden mit denen zusammen ungefragt eine Bevölkerung. Da kann aber der einzelne Mensch nichts für. Das ist einfach so. Menschen teilen sich nicht nur Räume, sie teilen Räume auch ein und/oder auf. Das tun zwar nicht alle Menschen, aber alle nehmen die Entscheidungen der manchen Menschen irgendwie hin oder an. Meistens tun das Menschen. Wenn Menschen das nicht tun, gibt es manchmal Streit, auch Haue oder Kloppe, sogar Krieg. Irgendwann ist das dann vorbei und Menschen tun so, als ginge es jetzt wieder. Bis Menschen dann entweder am selben Ort oder anderswo wieder prügeln/schießen/bomben. Weil Menschen essen, scheißen Menschen auch, meist irgendwo, wo das vorgesehen ist, die Vorsehung ist aber diesbezüglich nicht einheitlich, was die ganze Menschheit angeht. Die Menschheit ist die Menge aller Menschen zusammen. Dagegen kann kein Mensch etwas tun, dass Mensch lebenslang Menschheitsteil ist. Erst mit Lebensende - hier gibt es einen geringfügigen subjektiven Ermächtigungsspielraum - scheidet der Mensch aus der Gesamtmasse Menschheit aus.
