Too big to care

Remember the first time you used Google search? It was like magic. After years of progressively worsening search quality from Altavista and Yahoo, Google was literally stunning, a gateway to the very best things on the internet.

Today, Google has a 90% search market-share. They got it the hard way: they cheated. Google spends tens of billions of dollars on payola in order to ensure that they are the default search engine behind every search box you encounter on every device, every service and every website:

Not coincidentally, Google's search is getting progressively, monotonically worse. It is a cesspool of botshit, spam, scams, and nonsense. Important resources that I never bothered to bookmark because I could find them with a quick Google search no longer show up in the first ten screens of results:

Even after all that payola, Google is still absurdly profitable. They have so much money, they were able to do a $80 billion stock buyback. Just a few months later, Google fired 12,000 skilled technical workers. Essentially, Google is saying that they don't need to spend money on quality, because we're all locked into using Google search. It's cheaper to buy the default search box everywhere in the world than it is to make a product that is so good that even if we tried another search engine, we'd still prefer Google.

This is enshittification. Google is shifting value away from end users (searchers) and business customers (advertisers, publishers and merchants) to itself:

And here's the thing: there are search engines out there that are so good that if you just try them, you'll get that same feeling you got the first time you tried Google.

When I was in Tucson last month on my book-tour for my new novel The Bezzle, I crashed with my pals Patrick and Teresa Nielsen Hayden. I've know them since I was a teenager (Patrick is my editor).

We were sitting in his living room on our laptops – just like old times! – and Patrick asked me if I'd tried Kagi, a new search-engine.

Teresa chimed in, extolling the advanced search features, the "lenses" that surfaced specific kinds of resources on the web.

I hadn't even heard of Kagi, but the Nielsen Haydens are among the most effective researchers I know – both in their professional editorial lives and in their many obsessive hobbies. If it was good enough for them…

I tried it. It was magic.

No, seriously. All those things Google couldn't find anymore? Top of the search pile. Queries that generated pages of spam in Google results? Fucking pristine on Kagi – the right answers, over and over again.

That was before I started playing with Kagi's lenses and other bells and whistles, which elevated the search experience from "magic" to sorcerous.

The catch is that Kagi costs money – after 100 queries, they want you to cough up $10/month ($14 for a couple or $20 for a family with up to six accounts, and some kid-specific features):

I immediately bought a family plan. I've been using it for a month. I've basically stopped using Google search altogether.

Kagi just let me get a lot more done, and I assumed that they were some kind of wildly capitalized startup that was running their own crawl and and their own data-centers. But this morning, I read Jason Koebler's 404 Media report on his own experiences using it:

Koebler's piece contained a key detail that I'd somehow missed:

When you search on Kagi, the service makes a series of “anonymized API calls to traditional search indexes like Google, Yandex, Mojeek, and Brave,” as well as a handful of other specialized search engines, Wikimedia Commons, Flickr, etc. Kagi then combines this with its own web index and news index (for news searches) to build the results pages that you see. So, essentially, you are getting some mix of Google search results combined with results from other indexes.

In other words: Kagi is a heavily customized, anonymized front-end to Google.

The implications of this are stunning. It means that Google's enshittified search-results are a choice. Those ad-strewn, sub-Altavista, spam-drowned search pages are a feature, not a bug. Google prefers those results to Kagi, because Google makes more money out of shit than they would out of delivering a good product:

No wonder Google spends a whole-ass Twitter every year to make sure you never try a rival search engine. Bottom line: they ran the numbers and figured out their most profitable course of action is to enshittify their flagship product and bribe their "competitors" like Apple and Samsung so that you never try another search engine and have another one of those magic moments that sent all those Jeeves-askin' Yahooers to Google a quarter-century ago.

One of my favorite TV comedy bits is Lily Tomlin as Ernestine the AT&T operator; Tomlin would do these pitches for the Bell System and end every ad with "We don't care. We don't have to. We're the phone company":

Speaking of TV comedy: this week saw FTC chair Lina Khan appear on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. It was amazing:

The coverage of Khan's appearance has focused on Stewart's revelation that when he was doing a show on Apple TV, the company prohibited him from interviewing her (presumably because of her hostility to tech monopolies):

But for me, the big moment came when Khan described tech monopolists as "too big to care."

What a phrase!

Since the subprime crisis, we're all familiar with businesses being "too big to fail" and "too big to jail." But "too big to care?" Oof, that got me right in the feels.

Because that's what it feels like to use enshittified Google. That's what it feels like to discover that Kagi – the good search engine – is mostly Google with the weights adjusted to serve users, not shareholders.

Google used to care. They cared because they were worried about competitors and regulators. They cared because their workers made them care:

had a fucking brain blast earlier about the Yeren and their place in the broader mythology and did a funky in-world piece about it. figured they needed some more meat beyond just being a Pentex experiment :). as told from the perspective of "Pictures in Neon", an Elder Nuwisha who is currently a little too drunk to be funny.

Everyone’s got a fuckin’ stain on their record as far as I’m concerned, haha. It’s easy to take the piss with the Garou, but the other Fera just looooove to pretend they’re squeaky clean. You look back far enough, you’ll see what I mean. When the Apis wore the crown, they were nepotists and holier-than-thou pricks who couldn’t take a joke. Rodens are pragmatic, sure, but speak to a couple about their practices of culling those who can’t do their job anymore and watch them hold back little mousy tears. The Rokea are swimming relics who also can’t take a joke, the Ananasi are if the Samsa weren’t as fun, the Bastet are too smug when it’s least convenient, and the Aquila are really starting to concern me with the nihilistic bullshit these days. At least we’ve still got the Anurana and the Corax.

But hey, you wanna know a secret? I heard this one from a Mokole-Mbembe I’m pals with down in The Big Easy, he said it really changed his perspective on things. Lemme finish this glass real quick and I’ll regale you. I’ve got all night.

Listen up kids, ‘cause I’m about to tell you about The Great Monkeying. Back before the Impergium, a long, long time ago— Shifters didn’t have Homid forms. Didn’t have Half-Homid forms neither. Makes sense, doesn’t it? We were just animals that could get bigger and smarter and tougher when we needed. There were outliers who could take weird-ass forms like the Dragon Kings could, but as far as we know, they didn’t look like Humans.

Have you ever wondered why we Fera can all turn into a single type of ape? It’s not like Homo Sapiens ain’t a fuckin species of animal too. It’s basic biology shit.

But, there were species of Were-Ape that existed, and that I’m pretty sure are still around. You might know them by the name “Yeren” or something. Their symbol looked a bit.... like.... this. Yeah, the ones that Pentex claims they invented. No, they didn’t invent a Shifter. The Wyrm can’t invent anything, didn’t you pay attention when your Elders were giving you lessons on the Triat, kids? Fuck. Where was I?

Yeah, the Yeren. They loved to push the boundaries, inventing crazy shit and diving deep into the Umbra with the best of us. Honestly they sounded like a hoot, but that kind of ambition can leave you open to some nasty customers. They got approached by a powerful Spirit at some point who made them an offer they couldn’t pass up.  It would teach them a powerful ritual that would grant their fellow Fera brand new forms to use in the fight against the Wyrm.

Imagine that! Granting every Fera that currently exists and will exist the capability to use entirely new forms?? The offer was too good to refuse obviously, and they entered a relationship with this new Patron. Time went on, and since nobody was really paying attention to them, they got to finishing their Ritual without a hitch.

Of course, the final step was to sacrifice themselves. Yeah, everyone. All at once. Hey, listen here. You might not think that it’d be a good idea, but these fuckin apes were crazy. They knew they’d die, but they also knew that they’d have committed such an incredible sacrifice that they’d live on forever. And, well. They kinda succeeded, just not in the way they might’ve wanted.

Here’s another thing you gotta realize too, kids. There were no mages or whatever before Humanity got its footing. There just weren’t. Not the way we know them. You can blame the monkeys for them showing up though, ‘cause their sacrifice essentially irradiated the earth around their Kinfolk with so much Gnosis that a bunch of them turned into the first mages.

And you know how mages can shape reality to whatever the hell their twisted perception is? It should be obvious by now where this is going.

These new mages saw themselves reflected in the Fera. Anthropomorphized them and shit. Like if steamboat willie were a cave painting. They applied Human characteristics to the Shifters, and as a result, they literally made them Human. One by one, as mythologies about men who turned into beasts and back spread across the earth, the Fera suddenly found themselves Human, in addition to being whatever animal they are. 

You really wanna call bullshit on this one? I’ve never been more honest in my life, it’s so hard to lie when I’m drunk. And it’s fucking HARD to get drunk! If you want the rest of this story without the bullshit, you’d fill back up my glass. That’s my explicit consent, by the way! Quit being shy with the pours!

Okay, so. Everyone’s obviously pissed that they suddenly can turn into naked apes. It’s a violation of just about every conception of consent out there. Everyone turns to the Homen to turn them to mush— wait, shit. I forgot something. The Yeren had a couple Tribes, and the one that did all this shit were Clan Homen. Homo sapiens. The gorillas and orangutans didn’t have shit to do with it. Anyways, the spiders tell everyone that Clan Homen had been working with an extension of the Weaver directly, and that they probably’d been tricked. 

That didn’t do shit to make anyone less angry. They wanted blood, and even more so after not even the greatest mystics around couldn’t figure out how to undo it. So, the Fera decided to turn on the other Yeren— just a little too late, though. About 99% of the bastards had fled deep into the Umbra before retribution could come ‘round, and we only rarely see them these days.

No, the Pentex-made ones aren’t real, I already said that. They’re not actual Shifters. It’s like if someone drew an evil crayon version of a Shifter and it came to fuckin’ life. No, I don’t know for sure, but I know a Fera when I smell one, and those guys just smell like cheap cologne and hate. You wanna hear the end of this story or not?!

The Yeren flee into the Umbra, the Fera are pissed off, yadda yadda everyone’s fighting and upset. Actually, the story is basically over. Oh yeah, and this is what started the Impergium by the way. We got too heated about Humanity so we decided to start killing them. Look where that got us! Ugh. God, I’m too drunk to have fun right now. Lets get something to eat, I need to sober up.

Check-in for 01/28/24

It's been a while since I did one of these. Time to remedy that!

I've been doing well in my assignments, but due to some registration issues at the start of the semester I was unable to sign up for any web development or programming classes :< It's nice to take a break, but I'm really worried about getting stagnant in those skills, and maybe even losing what I've learned over time.

This is where a couple of new projects come in: A blorbo database and a tool for drawing pokemon from memory. These things are going to keep me avoid stagnancy and help me develop my web dev and Python programming skills, and I'm real excited to talk about them.

First up, let's talk about that tool for drawing pokemon from memory. I love drawing pokemon from memory, but it's a bit of a struggle to find tools online that work well for a solo experience when you're doing this challenge alone. So I made a program in PyGame to solve this problem, and I've actually already completed it! It was a great learning experience when it came to getting a taste of APIs, and PokeAPI really helped me do all the heavy lifting with it. I also ended up using ChatGPT to help me understand how to phrase my questions and the things I needed to research. This is the end result:

If you click "Get Random Pokemon", the program will provide a pokemon's name. The point of it is to draw the pokemon as best as you remember it, and then click "Show Pokemon Image" to see how you did. You will then have the option to get a new random pokemon, which clears the image from the window.

There's a lot of stuff I don't understand about how the program works--- APIs evade my understanding, and Tkinter is a dark art beyond my comprehension. But I was able to make a program that solved a genuine problem for me for the first time, and that's super exciting to me!

Now, for web development--- long story short, I'm making a website dedicated to cataloguing my OCs that's very much inspired by tumblr user @snekkerdoodles's personal site on neocities, which I regularly stare at in an effort to motivate myself to make cool things like it (everyone reading this should check his page out IMMEDIATELY and tell him how cool it is). Here's the screenshots of the WIP I'm chipping away at right now:

I don't have much to say about it, as the interesting stuff will really be the content of the pages, and I still have yet to finish the template page I'll be filling with my OCs' information. However, I can say that I'm very upset with the lack of proper teaching that took place in the first (and currently only) college web dev class I've taken. I spent an entire semester doing my own research to learn everything they were supposed to be teaching us. I'm still very peeved about that.

To summarize this very rambling post I'm too sleepy to edit properly, I'm making a digital blorbo encyclopedia, and I finished making a little desktop app thingy, which means I need to summon a new programming project. I'm tempted to make it a video game... maybe I should turn back to that visual novel idea I had ages ago and boot up RenPy!

Angin forcing him to try a new abomination (he won't even give it the dignity of calling it a "pastry") resulting in the countless trips to bathroom nation. His stomach still hurts and it has been HOURS, Yaya's deathly cookies are better than this..

Api pranking him was not appriciated at all and HOW did he convince Shielda to help him is beyond him (you'd think she would be the responsible twin), no worries though because he already prepared revenge for him.

No he does not care that it was accidental and that he was not the supposedly "target" of said prank. It still happened.

Clearly this means war.

Daun and Cahaya blowing his EAR off did not help, look. He loves those two, he really does. But he did not need to hear 200+ remedies that can help sedate Angin's poison

Petir DITCHED him with these heathens that he has to call brothers

Now he was proud to be a very mature and level headed person.. but hes still a 17 year old

The sun is really warm this evening, casting golden rays to the surrounding foliage, Mix with the wind thats blowing leafs around; it creates a beautiful artistry that he wished he could paint if he was an artist

'Maybe i should take up painting.. i could practice painting on my sculptures'

"Ta.. nah?"

That soft voice broke him out of his observation, looking to his side to find the little sunlight of the family.

As much as hes still annoyed by the younger's previous endeavors, he doesn't really have the heart to dismiss the little guy

'Trying to help shouldn't be rewarded by punishment'

Putting on a soft smile he looked to the little sunlight

"Hey bud, didn't see you there." he looks to the container Haya is holding, "what's this?"

Since Cahaya is holding the drink (at least he assumes it's a drink) he couldn't really write, his brow furrowed in concentration, Tanah could see the spark of hesitation and the troublesome look adorned on the youngest's face

Filled with renewed patience and understanding he went to grab the drink so Cahaya could write

"... its ca- chamo..mile green tea"

Surprise but also pride exploded inside Tanah, bitter feeling forgotten he pat the little sunlight's head as encouragement

"Good job buddy!" He praized, chuckling when he saw the ruby red shade that spread in Haya's face. "Why'd you get it though?"

Distress colors Cahaya's face this time, it seemed he'd reach his quota of words for today since he just shoves the drink unto Tanah's chest

Giggling even more at the youngest's display, fondness rose inside of him as he went to take the hot beverage out of the little sunlight's hands

"..for Tanah."

His hand stopped mere inches from the drink, shock adorning his face

'Did he just..'

It feels like an earthquake is happening through his whole body by how much hes shaking from pure joy

Though seeing Haya cowering and covering his face with the drink snaps him out of his cuteness aggression overload

'Dear God, i'm weak'

His face hurts from how much hes grinning, practically splitting it half

Showering the sunlight with so much praise and affirmation, screw whoever is looking at them weird; they probably have a sad loveless life

'He said my name, he said my name!' The only repeating thought he could comprehend right now

Looking around simply out of instinct to see if any of the other siblings heard, only for confusion and worry to consume him soon after

"Sunlight, thank you for the tea.. but why are you here alone?" Hugging the younger close, he looks around even more. "You're not alone are you? We've talked about this, why didn't you ask someon–"

Feeling the tapping on his side he looks to Cahaya who's raising his hand

He calmly points to a shop, a tea shop more specifically; the Jasmine Dragon

Narrowing his eyes he could barely make out the figure that seems to be in the shape of his 5th brother

'Oh right, him and Daun were talking about remedies for my stomach'

His whole body shook with how much love hes feeling. The unfortunate victim here is Cahaya, who is forced to accept the killer hug that he gives him

As he made his way to the shop with Cahaya leading the way, beverage in hand, he went to grab phone; a mission on his eyes for the perfect revenge presented itself on a golden platter

He might be the current "golden" child. But he's 17 year old with a grudge, and man is he petty

"Why does your face look evil, who's dying?" Daun questioned when they reached him. Sending the message, he beamed at Daun with practiced ease, "It's nothing don't worry about it, what have you two been up to anyway?"

Thoroughly distracted, the duo starts to go back and forth describing their day and how they tried to find the perfect tea to deal with his poison for him

Tea in hand and ironically stomachache completely forgotten, Tanah enjoyed listening with a fond smile on his face

*cracks knuckles* sooo have you ever heard about Hytale?

This Game has been my neurodivergent obsession for a few years now, despite having never actually played it, since its not even out lol.

If you dont know what Hytale is, buckle up because you are stuck with me here and will have to listen to me rant about it >:)

Hytale is a Game being made by Hypixel Studios, an offshoot from Hypixel inc. who run the Hypixel minecraft Server. The Game has been in developement since somewhere around 2016 and has yet to release. Why so long, you might think? Well, its complicated.

Back in the ancient year before memorial (2016), Minecraft was at an all time low in terms of player numbers due to many factors, both a lack of interest in the games updates, minecraft being considered cringe and other games such as fortnite having pulled both players and creators away from the Game.

Dont get the wrong impression though, Minecraft was still being played a lot, but not very much talked about, and especially java editions days seemed numbered by a lot of creators, including the owner of Hypixel, Simon, as well as Noxy, who will be important later.

Simon, as far we know is a cool guy, and has made stonks with the Servers revenue during Minecrafts peak, but these times seemingly would never be coming back.

Minecraft just lacked the aspects nececarry to sustain its community, be it the lack of content updates, creator support through a modding api or freedom in policy through recent eula changes.

Due to these and other factors, the Hypixel Team realized that running their business long term in an enviromen, where so many sweeping large changes outside of their control could end their entire livelihood, they realized that there was basically nothing stopping them from just making their own minecraft, free from the restrainst of their creativity, community and buisness, and thats why Hypixel Studios, the Game company, was born.

As stated by noxy and Simon back in 2016, they had over 25 people working full time, funded by simon in an aruably risky move to build their own legs tto stand on, and by 2018, they were far enough into developement to share their project with the wider Hypixel community, and mabe even the entire Minecraft community...

In late 2018, Hypixel Studios released a Trailer on their Youtube channel for a new Game they had been working on for over 2 years called Hytale:

Hytale was advertised as a Blockgame Sandbox RPG, utalizing simmilar voxel based terrain as minecraft, but other than that completely different: Where Minecraft was an open-ended Sandbox for the player to shape the way they like, Hytale was designed to be an Adventure RPG with a Story/Campain, Lore, more in depth combat, a fully realized fantasy World with Bosses and dungeons and content galore, but also open for other people to create their own experiences inside the game using modding support, live scripting a model maker and so on. Not to mention an upgraded version of their minecraft server, now unchained from minecraft and let loose on a Game under their full control.

Simon and the others new that there was interest for that kind of game, but the response from the wider Gaming community was beyond their wildest Expectation:

Their Prediction laid at around 100, mabe 200 thousand views on their first look trailer, but boi did they underestimate:

The Trailer now sits at 60. Million. Views. 60. MILLION.

Many AAA Studios wuld dream of that kind of success, and now they were sitting there, with the pressure to perform in front of the entire Minecraft community, they were harolded as the bringers of Minecraft 2, the ones who would give them what minecraft was sorely lacking, they were now asked to bear a community of that size on their shoulders, and well, they marched on.

On their Twitter Account, they said they were aiming for the game to be in everyones hands by 2019, but as we all know, that never happened, but why?

They decided to delay the release until 2021 to try and reach the expectations now put on them, expand the team, explore new possibilites and see how they can harness the attention the game had gotten.

Over the course of the next two years, they would release blogposts after blogpost updating exited fans on the developement of the game, sharing details on how the game shaped up, and sometimes announce new hires, along with simon handing of the torch to noxy as head of the company.

At the Start of 2020, theythen announced that Hypixel Studios had been aqquired by a major Studio called Riot Games, that would be funding the further developement as well as oversee and give advice to the rapidly growing Team. For many, me included this sounded dangerous, since as gamers we were well to aware of the many cases where studios like Electronic Arts have acquired smaller studios, only for them to ruin their future games and close the studio after a small failiure.

But as we now know, this did not happen in this case, in fact, riot is built on very simmilar ideals and spirit of entrepreneurship, their flagship title, league of legends, was inspired by Dota, a popular warcraft 3 mod - a journey not too dissimilar from what Hypixel went through with minecraft.

If we now skip until today, Hypixel studios has grown from somewhere around 30 employees to over 130, they have hired talent from the minecraft community, like the developer of sodium, they hired people from the pre-release hytale community, they have hired people they themselves grew up playing games made of, and as stated by their Game director John Hendricks, a former Mojang employee, they have now largely ,,Charted the iceberg" in terms of what is now in their scope to expand hytale into: Hytale is now not only a big game, its a Plattform for People to come together, explore and create, for people to go on the same sort of journey they themselves took initialy with the project.

This has obviously meant that, to utalize the immense amount of talent, reccources and experience, they need time, and this has pushed a possible release farther and farther back.

The Game that was being developed back before 2020 is now left to be an overengineered prototype of their full vision, while they rebuild the games technical side from the ground up to have an engine durabe enough for over a decade to come, and take their time doing it, not under pressure from riot to crunch developement, as other publishers and parent companies have done in the past.

As for me, I have been exited for what they do with the Game since that announcement back in 2018, and I have hopes and dreams of what playing and creating in hytale will be like. I cant wait to explore the world of orbis, play minigames and explore what others may create, or create myself.

The Game Industry is a tough place, where funding, good management, talent, experience, and an exited playerbase cannot guarantee a good game, but mabe, just mabe, lightning will strike exactly where I want it to, and mabe Hytale will be the game I have hope it has the potential to be.

The San Francisco tech scene is completely beyond satire. I'm in a discord server for game developers based in SF because even though I don't live in the bay area anymore it's still the closest hub for indie developers near me.
