dev process of my submission for hackapet by hack club!!

drew all the assets, wrote all the code, consumed all the energy drinks xD
overall an incredibly fun experience!! learning pixel art and ignoring my psychology tests were the biggest highlights :3
now onto the final push to submit on time >:D

i was going to post this yesterday but i was Omega busy so i am doing it right now instead
if youre a fan of inscryption, ive been working on an inscryption demake project in pygame with a friend of mine called descryption that expands on the world of inscryption with things like a fifth scrybe and custom cost, over 100 new sigils and 300 new cards, full art spells, and a host of gamemodes, including an in-universe story mode
progress is at a standstill now because were both busy with life and other things but if you want to check out what weve been up to, the discord server link is https://discord.gg/TUPb3VBsAX

Check-in for 01/28/24
It's been a while since I did one of these. Time to remedy that!
I've been doing well in my assignments, but due to some registration issues at the start of the semester I was unable to sign up for any web development or programming classes :< It's nice to take a break, but I'm really worried about getting stagnant in those skills, and maybe even losing what I've learned over time.
This is where a couple of new projects come in: A blorbo database and a tool for drawing pokemon from memory. These things are going to keep me avoid stagnancy and help me develop my web dev and Python programming skills, and I'm real excited to talk about them.
First up, let's talk about that tool for drawing pokemon from memory. I love drawing pokemon from memory, but it's a bit of a struggle to find tools online that work well for a solo experience when you're doing this challenge alone. So I made a program in PyGame to solve this problem, and I've actually already completed it! It was a great learning experience when it came to getting a taste of APIs, and PokeAPI really helped me do all the heavy lifting with it. I also ended up using ChatGPT to help me understand how to phrase my questions and the things I needed to research. This is the end result:
If you click "Get Random Pokemon", the program will provide a pokemon's name. The point of it is to draw the pokemon as best as you remember it, and then click "Show Pokemon Image" to see how you did. You will then have the option to get a new random pokemon, which clears the image from the window.
There's a lot of stuff I don't understand about how the program works--- APIs evade my understanding, and Tkinter is a dark art beyond my comprehension. But I was able to make a program that solved a genuine problem for me for the first time, and that's super exciting to me!
Now, for web development--- long story short, I'm making a website dedicated to cataloguing my OCs that's very much inspired by tumblr user @snekkerdoodles's personal site on neocities, which I regularly stare at in an effort to motivate myself to make cool things like it (everyone reading this should check his page out IMMEDIATELY and tell him how cool it is). Here's the screenshots of the WIP I'm chipping away at right now:
I don't have much to say about it, as the interesting stuff will really be the content of the pages, and I still have yet to finish the template page I'll be filling with my OCs' information. However, I can say that I'm very upset with the lack of proper teaching that took place in the first (and currently only) college web dev class I've taken. I spent an entire semester doing my own research to learn everything they were supposed to be teaching us. I'm still very peeved about that.
To summarize this very rambling post I'm too sleepy to edit properly, I'm making a digital blorbo encyclopedia, and I finished making a little desktop app thingy, which means I need to summon a new programming project. I'm tempted to make it a video game... maybe I should turn back to that visual novel idea I had ages ago and boot up RenPy!
#let me know if you'd prefer I untag you!#I'm still so uncertain of tagging etiquette on Tumblr#stuff by sofie#sofie checks in#web developers#web development#web dev#programming#coding#codeblr#python#software development#app development#pygame

first few lines of pygame 𖹭 16/03/2025
i have a friend who's helping me learn how to code, specifically in pygame and last night we played around a bit with the very basics and this is what he helped me write. it's not much but it's better than not having created anything. i'm still a long way to go but i am proud of myself for taking the initiative into creating more.

Experience the Quirky and Relatable World of I Wani Hug that Gator

I Wani Hug that Gator is a unique choice-driven narrative game for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. The incredible team behind Cavemanon deserves heartfelt thanks for this release. Available on Steam and itch with 98% Overwhelmingly Positive reviews. Since we're always on the lookout for games that break the mold and offer something fresh. I Wani Hug that Gator does just that. This isn't your typical story-driven experience. It's a visual novel that really emphasizes choices and their outcomes. While wrapping it in a story that's both quirky and relatable. Imagine this: you're Inco, stepping into your senior year, ready to take on whatever comes your way. But life throws a curveball - your family is moving across the country. This is where the real journey begins. I Wani Hug that Gator is a tale of new beginnings, a chance to rebuild from scratch. You might relate to this, having faced similar situations where you had to adapt and find your footing in new environments. The core of this experience lies in how you navigate Inco's social life. This is also where the game truly shines. You're not just passing time at school; you're making decisions that shape Inco's relationships and future. And let's talk about Olivia – she's a character that adds a whole new dynamic to Inco's life. Their interactions are like a dance, sometimes harmonious, sometimes stepping on each other's toes. Since it's this complexity that adds depth to the narrative.

But here's the kicker – your choices don't just affect the storyline; they lead to one of four unique endings. It's also a reminder that in life, like in this story, our choices have real weight and outcomes. I Wani Hug that Gator about understanding and accepting who you are, and the power of second chances. Now, a heads-up: there's mature content in the title. We're talking about implicit references to drug use and some accidental violence. It's handled with care, but it's something to be aware of if you're sensitive to these themes. There is a Free Demo for Linux, should you want to try before you buy. Overall, I Wani Hug that Gator choice-driven narrative is a breath of fresh air. It's a blend of humor, drama, and real-life challenges, offering a story that's as engaging as it is thought provoking. It's not just about playing through a story; it's about shaping it with your decisions, making it a deeply personal experience. Available on Steam and itch for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. Priced at $14.99 USD / £12.79 / 14,79€.

holy FUCK that last post popped off like crazy <3 heres some more descryption stuff weve been working on
the (as of now) full lineup of menu cards, from left to right: story mode, rogue run, duels, puzzles, compendium (list of cards and sigils, explanation of game mechanics, or other important stuff), options, quit
hot new sexy trait displays for the gbc style
starter deck display screen, the last two being onyx and spells
rogue runs begin by having you sacrifice three of the five scrybes (refer to the last post), and the two remaining scrybes are the ones you've chosen to use their cards, nodes, bosses, in your run each scrybe has their own 8 starter decks which are all progressively unlocked a la kaycee mod - you can also see there's a second screen of decks to choose from
the scrybe of artistry galliard and his underlings: the scout, cartographer, and playwright he was once a pupil of magnificus but a difference of opinions caused the two to have a falling out, which is elaborated on in the story mode
some more artistry cards and full-art spells (full-arts will only display their sigils/stats when moused over so just imagine my cursor is over all 4 of them at once)
this one isn't actually descryption related, just some shitpost-y sprites or cards that didn't make the cut
...「78 71 66 20 6d 78 78 20 6f 64 71 6d 66 75 61 7a 20 6b 75 71 78 70 20 66 61 20 59 6b 20 6f 61 79 79 6d 7a 70 0a 78 71 66 20 6e 78 75 7a 70 75 7a 73 20 69 74 75 66 71 20 65 67 6e 65 67 79 71 20 6d 7a 70 20 6f 78 71 6d 7a 65 71 20 66 74 71 20 65 78 6d 66 71』...

A (very) rough draft of what I have going for my game demo.
been a pretty interesting period developing this. Compared to some of the other languages I've delved into, Python is markedly simple in terms of what you want to implement & how that reads out, thanks to it's abundance of preset/external libraries, but all computer code will always be computer code: it's tedium of the alien variety. Regardless, it's been fun to try out my efforts, even if it's in the form of a scrappy little arcade game. I'm sure you guys will get a kick out of it once it's ready.
Sorry if the capture is pretty poor; framerate has been bogged down, hence the missing flashes. more to come

Hey! I recently completed a project about graphing the entire human noosphere, or realm of ideas, and made a video on it. You can find the video here, complete with some existential dread.
