The Traveler and the Tiny Ghost - Chapter 1 (H/ollow K/night Fic)

eyo I’m writing another fic. this time it’s multiple chapters. this first one doesn’t have much going on, sorry. It’s mostly just setup for the g/t that’s coming in the next chapter, and I wanted to post it now.

Characters: The Knight (Ghost), Quirrel, Mask Maker Word Count: 2,175 Warnings: uhhhh Mention of Violence? idk, nothing much happens in this chapter. Bugs, obviously Other notes: This chapter may not be that interesting, but I got Plans. If everything goes according to how I think it will, the next chapter should have G/t, and then the following one or the one after that will have vore. If you’re not interested in vore but you wanna read G/t, then there’ll be a good stopping point just before the chapter(s) with the noms

The hot spring bubbled peacefully around him as Quirrel allowed himself to slip further under the water. How fortunate he was to have found this! Especially in such a place as oppressive as Deepnest. The trek to get here had been far from pleasant, but it increased his gratitude towards the find tenfold. Finally, a moment of respite. The sound of rushing water drowned out the screeches, skitters, and rumbles of infected beasts navigating the surrounding area. It couldn’t quite cover the sound of the fast-approaching whistle of something falling, however.

The pillbug had just enough warning to curl himself up before a massive wave of warm water rushed over him from the falling object’s resulting splash. As soon as it passed, he uncurled slightly, and then fully with a small chuckle at the sight before him.

“Quite the fall that was, my friend. Are you alright?”

The little wanderer looked over at Quirrel from where they floated in the middle of the spring, having just been staring up at the hole they had apparently fallen from. They huffed, righted themselves, and waded over to sit near him. Quirrel allowed another chuckle to slip through and relaxed back against the shore of the hot spring.

“What a thrill this is, to find such warm comfort amidst this den of beasts,” he mused. The smaller being looked up at that, prompting him to continue. “This is a ferocious place no doubt. Supposedly, there’s a village deep in the warren. Its inhabitants never accepted Hallownest’s king.” The wonders of this fallen kingdom truly never ceased. Once he got a good look around the aforementioned village, Quirrel planned to leave this area. As interesting as it all was, it was fraught with danger, and it was best not to take unnecessary risks when he still had plenty more to see. Perhaps he could go to the area above Deepnest next? He hadn’t been able to get to the storied Queen’s Gardens previously, but there may be a route connecting it to the kingdom of beasts.

He was drawn out of his thoughts by the sound of sloshing. A short distance away, Quirrel’s small friend was bouncing up and down, creating circles of gentle waves that rippled through the water. Once they saw that they had his attention, they drew their nail and sent a splash his way. Quickly ducking his head to shield his face with the large mask he wore, the traveler smiled. The spray settled, and he looked back up. The wanderer's nail was still drawn. Quirrel didn't quite trust the look they were giving him. He ducked his head again and kept it that way through the following onslaught of splashes.

"Are you having fun?" he asked when their bombardment ceased. A single nod. He was about to say something else, when a black forelimb reached forward and touched his mask. The one on his face, not the one atop his head.

"...Yes?" Quirrel was feeling rather awkward, he had to admit. Their gaze was piercing, but he got the sense that they weren't staring at him, rather, at his mask. Their head was tilted a bit too far to the left to be looking into the eyeholes. Their somewhat cool hand rubbed downward a bit.

"Um," he responded intelligently. Just as he moved to lift his own hand out of the water, the little wanderer pulled back, shook their head a few times, and waded out of the hot spring. As they neared one of the exits to the room, they turned and waved. Quirrel waved back haltingly.

Now what was that about? He chased the odd interaction from his mind and decided now was as good a time as any to follow their example and head out.

Sighing, he lifted himself out of the water and went to retrieve his nail from where it rested against the nearby bench. Time to see about finding that village he had mentioned, then.

As interesting as the remnants of the Weaver’s hanging abodes had been, Quirrel found himself eager to leave. One of the Beast’s devout had spotted him as he explored the largest of the structures, and though it wasn’t too difficult to escape the situation without injury, he didn’t want to repeat it. The Queen’s Gardens sounded like a much more appealing place to visit at the moment.

A few hops upward, and Quirrel came to rest in an alcove. The light above was sparse through the foliage and scaffolding he could see, but it was welcoming compared to Deepnest's oppressive dark. The pillbug enjoyed dim conditions, sure, but this was on another level.

Once he caught his breath, he took notice of a steady tapping behind him, along with what sounded like muttering. Turning to look deeper into the alcove, it was now clear that a lumafly's light illuminated a space further in. Quirrel must've been too focused on the light above to see it sooner.

He heaved himself back up and brushed himself off, then walked down the small corridor he had found. The tapping increased in volume, as did the muttering. The traveler stepped out into a small room covered wall-to-wall in masks of all shapes and sizes, with a long-limbed bug crafting them at a worktable in the center. It was honestly impressive; even excluding all the completed works around them, they were both chiseling out a new one and painting an almost-finished one simultaneously. Quirrel idly wondered where they got the material for all of those. They sure seemed to be producing them at a frightening pace, but with the combination of the stasis and lack of sane customers, there was something to be said about the pileup of spare masks.

“Ah, hello there,” Quirrel began. He didn’t have to say much before the strange bug’s mutterings shifted seamlessly into something more intelligible.

“A mask he wears, and a mask he carries. A burden given freely so long ago. Does he know the truth of what lies so close to his mind, to his heart, or does he remain ignorant to the purpose of his ordeal?”

...Scratch that previous thought regarding intelligibility, then. As much as Quirrel wanted to pick apart the information he was just given, something drew his mind away from it. Probably just his curiosity, as this was a fascinating bug for him to have stumbled across.

“Please excuse the rather obvious question, but you are a Mask Maker, I presume?”

“Indeed. Masks I craft, to provide faces to this kingdom’s faceless. I see you are familiar with the concept.”

Quirrel gave an absent nod, only half-invested in the conversation. An idea had come to him, though a rather peculiar one. He only hoped that the Mask Maker would not take offense at his request.

“Could I commission you for a specific mask?”

“Two masks you bear, and yet you ask for another. What would be the purpose of this mask?”

“It’s a, erm,” Quirrel faltered. How to describe it? “I suppose it’d be a memento, of sorts. Not meant to be worn, small enough to carry easily, just something to remember someone by.”

The pillbug thought he heard a brief pause in the repetitive chipping of the larger bug’s chisel, but he couldn’t be sure.

“Does he come here to make a mockery of my work? Does he not understand its importance? So many masks to make already, faces for others to use. What makes him think I could create something as simple as a trinket when there is more important work to be done?”

And now he’s gone and offended them. Better fix that mistake, and fast. This was important, but what could he say to emphasize that without making it worse?

“Ah, no, my apologies. It was not my intention to belittle your work. I understand its magnitude better than most, I’d say! These masks have helped me greatly over the course of my travels—both of them. I’d consider a memento almost as important. I’ve made a dear friend during my time here in Hallownest, but I have no physical traces of their existence, should my memory fail me. I have this feeling that it’s failed me before, and I don’t want to be left with nothing in the event that I never see them again. So- please.”

They worked in (relative) silence for a few moments longer, then replied, cryptic as ever, “A heavy burden he already bears, and yet another he would place upon himself. Concealing his own identity, alongside carrying multiple others’... If that is your wish, it shall be done. What exactly do you want made?”

Quirrel’s eyes widened in hope, before he scrambled to answer their last question. He made gestures as he described the pale shell of his wandering friend, then sheepishly asked if they had a piece of paper he could sketch it onto.

“No need. I believe I know what being you speak of. It shouldn’t be too hard to replicate, though different from my standard work. Come back after one sleep cycle; it will be done by then.”

Hmm. His small friend must have come here recently. Perhaps that would explain why they had been so interested in his mask back at the hot spring? It made the interaction seem a bit less odd in hindsight, though there was no denying that it had still been incredibly awkward. Quirrel nodded and made to leave, but then turned back to face the Mask Maker again at his next realization.

“Oh, sorry, I forgot to ask; what would you like in terms of payment?”

“I require none,” they replied tersely. “Faces I grant to all who’d request. Not task for I, but aid, gift to a world deserving. Though your request is not for a face, I honor it the same way. Besides, I’ve no use for Geo.”

Again, fascinating. There was nothing left to do there for the moment, however, so the traveler made his way out. He wasn’t particularly tired, so he decided to see if he could leap his way up to that hole in the ceiling that presumably led into the Queen’s Gardens.

Some exploration and a “night” of rest later found Quirrel heading back to the Mask Maker’s workshop. The Gardens hadn’t been any less dangerous than Deepnest, as it turned out. The mantises he came across had been particularly hostile. The pillbug hadn’t gotten to explore much of the area, but what he did see gave him plenty to think about. The Love Key now present in his satchel came to mind. What could it possibly unlock? ...On second thought, perhaps it was something best left untouched.

The ever-present sound of muttering and tapping let Quirrel know he was drawing closer to his destination. Anticipation filled his shell as he entered the chamber covered in finely-crafted masks, brushing past the hanging lichen that was so prevalent across the dead kingdom.

The first thing to catch his eye was the Mask Maker, still at their work table, still chiseling out one mask and painting another simultaneously, though they were different from the ones he’d seen on his previous visit. The question of whether they ever took a break from their self-imposed work briefly crossed Quirrel’s mind. The second thing he noticed was the tiny white shape sitting on the corner of their desk.

“He returns. The request has been fulfilled, but be mindful: though this mask was not crafted to be worn, should anything be able to put it on, it would function the same as any other. This includes the shift in identity that comes with changing one’s face.”

The traveler had picked up the memento and examined it as the craftsman spoke. The likeness was remarkable. It was truly like he held his wandering friend’s shell in his hand, only miniaturized. Though it didn’t have the faint glow that their shell seemed to have, it still reflected more light than the average mask. It was even fully hollow, with the eye and neck holes made to the exact proportions. He found it odd to be able to see inside rather than have his view blocked by impenetrable darkness. The only notable difference in terms of shape was that the pronged horns seemed a bit sharper than they should have been, though maybe that was just an effect of downsizing it from the original so much, Quirrel couldn’t be sure.

“Amazing,” he murmured, tilting and weighing it in his hands.

“If you are satisfied with my work and have no other requests, begone. There is much work to do.”

With how quick and precise the Mask Maker’s movements were as they continued to craft, Quirrel somewhat doubted that his presence was interrupting them in any way. Not one to be rude, however, he thanked them and took his leave.

He should probably take some time to consider his next destination, but before that, he could afford to take a few minutes to sit just outside and admire his new “trinket.”
