WHAT’S IN THE WISCONSIN WATER? (PART 5) - The Murder of Alex Woodworth
The scandalous love triangle that ended in cold-blooded murder.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ezra McCandless, born Monica Kay, was a free spirited art student living in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the summer 2017, Ezra met Jason Mengel, a 33-year-old National Guard medic. The two quickly fell in love and Jason let Ezra move in with him and his then roommate after only a couple of months. She soon after found out she was pregnant with Mengel’s child, but had an abortion in October 2017.
Ezra first met Alex Woodworth at a local coffee shop. She noticed Alex deeply focused on his writing, and asked him what he was writing about.
Alex Woodworth was a substitute teacher and barista. He was very quiet, soft spoken and generally kept to himself. He had dreams of becoming a professor of philosophy. According to friends, he “always had his head in a book” during free time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ezra became romantically involved with Alex behind Jason’s back.
A few months later in February 2018, Mengel went through Ezra’s phone and discovered her relationships with both Woodworth and a second man, who was friends with Jason and who she claimed had sexually assaulted her.
Mengel confronted both men in a very public argument at a coffee shop in Eau Claire.
On February 24, 2018, McCandless sent a text message to Woodworth telling him to not talk to her ever again. McCandless blamed Woodworth for the ending of her relationship with Mengel, though she remained in contact with Mengel.
Tumblr media
McCandless allegedly claimed that Woodworth was dealing with “internal pain and suffering.”
It was also speculated that McCandless murdered Alex so he couldn’t get in the way of her rekindling her relationship with Jason.
On March 22nd, 2018, McCandless reported that she was running errands in Eau Claire when she met with Woodworth to discuss their relationship. Ezra showed up at the coffee place where Alex worked. She said she wanted to end their relationship properly, return some personal belongings and also had some new art to show him.
It was during this encounter that McCandless purportedly stabbed and killed Woodworth, with the defense arguing that he attempted to assault her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ezra McCandless was charged and found guilty in the death of her ex-boyfriend, 24-year-old Alex Woodworth. She will be behind bars until, at least, 2070. She was convicted of first-degree murder in November, with the possibility of a life sentence.
She will have her first chance for parole when she is 72 years old.
What are your thoughts on this case? What motive could Ezra have to commit such a heinous act of violence? Do you think she just couldn’t face the reality of her decisions?

Not to make light of a terrible situation but I think Ezra McCandless could have saved everyone a lot of trouble if she'd just moved to Seattle and joined The Polycule

3 Year Name Retrospective
Approximately 3 years ago, I dropped my previously used name and took on a new one; Ezra. At first I used it simply with close friends, then expanded out to colleagues, and finally this last year changed it legally. I thought it'd be funny to do a look back at a few things I learned that I couldn't have foreseen before making the switch.
1. Ezra is gender neutral, except when it isn't.
One of the reasons I chose the name was because it was more androgynous. As a butch woman, I enjoy embracing masculinity a bit, and thought a name reflecting that would be kinda dope.
Except, despite being a name used by both men and women, in most peoples minds and several cultures it's very much exclusively one or the other.
In the US amongst white suburbanites, it's basically 100% assumed to be a male name. However, almost every person I've met from abroad sees it strictly as a female name. Funny enough, I've not personally met a single guy named Ezra in my personal life, but at least 6 women or non-binary people with the name.
2. Ezra is odd to pronounce for lots of non-English speakers.
Of those non-English speakers that I've met or have in family, I've found many have a difficult time pronouncing the name. The Hebrew phonetic structure doesn't convert well into things like romance languages or Slavic languages.
All well and good, except I'm around speakers of those languages often, and don't want to put extra strain on them. I've been suggesting the pronunciation of "Esura" to make it easier.
3. A lot of "famous" Ezras kinda suck.
Seriously. Miller, McCandless, and several others. Everytime I learn about a famous person that shares my name, I always brace for the bad...
... and yet all the ones I've met in person have kinda rocked.
4. There's a joke involving a band, you won't forget it.
If you're even remotely near people born in the 80s or earlier, they're gonna reference the band.
Nothing against the band, but buddy, I get it, we've heard it.
Anyways, it's been a good fit and a great change. But those are my thoughts.

Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer
Tumblr media
Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild follows Chris McCandless, a young man in his 20s recently estranged from his parents as he hitchhikes across North America, eventually settling into an abandoned bus in Alaska's Denali National Park where he tries to live off the land. It is revealed early on in the book that he starves to death in this wild, and the book slowly reveals piece by piece how he got to that point. I quite enjoyed the author’s use of non-chronological storytelling, which made the story feel like a jigsaw puzzle of sorts, where at the beginning you only had a piece of the story and as you read it slowly unraveled. The character of Chris McCandless is a complex one as the many people he meets along his travels describe him as bright and compassionate, however he is nevertheless shown to have an arrogant side to him, disappearing from his family without any regard to the pain and grief this would cause them. The book is quite the page-turner and you are constantly left wondering what will happen next and how Chris will wind up dead. By showing the end at the beginning, the author emphasizes the importance of the journey over the destination, the means over the ends. Despite how engaging the book was, Chris was often difficult to sympathize with as he regularly showed disdain for the people around him, something that made him unlikeable at times. I felt as though this was resolved later on in the book, as Chris is shown to be a nuanced person, who has many flaws and is far from perfect, but whose heart is in the right place. The fact that this book was based on a true story added to how engaging it was, because knowing that these events actually transpired, albeit perhaps in a less dramatized form, added to the stakes of the plot. Krakauer also did a good job at developing the setting of the book, as he described the landscape in such vivid detail that I made an image of it in my mind. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone ages 14 onwards as it grapples with some adult themes but in terms of the reading level is accessible to a large demographic.

The Case of Ezra McCandless
The Case of Ezra McCandless
On March 22, 2018, Ezra McCandless stabbed Alexander Woodworth of Eau Claire, Wisconsin 16 times.  McCandless stabbed Woodworth to death, then she carved the word “boy” into her forearm and slashed her clothing making it appear as if Woodworth attacked her. Don Sipple, a Wisconsin dairy farmer, was sitting down to dinner when McCandless showed up at his door on the night of March 22, 2018,…

In the afternoon of March 22nd, 2018, a 19-year-old woman knocked frantically on the door of dairy farmer Don Sipple who lived in Spring Brook, Wisconsin. The young woman was completely disheveled from head to toe and covered in bruises, cuts, and blood. The word BOY was also freshly carved into her arm. The barefoot woman claimed she had just been attacked and walked all the way to his house on foot. Concerned, he called the police immediately. She claimed to have no memory of what had happened to her and could not even recall her own name. She was take to the hospital for her treatments, to which she revealed her name to the police--Monica Jay. She mentioned another name: Jason Mengel. At this point, investigators began feeling skeptical of her supposed amnesia. Soon, this mystery woman before them was identified as Ezra McCandless (pictured above). But who was she, and how did she end up in Spring Brook with all her injuries?
Like many teenagers, Ezra was confused about her identity and experimented with different names and pronouns all throughout high school. For a while, she identified as a transman before switching back to female. Her name at birth was Monica Jay, but when she became an adult, she changed it to a more gender neutral name: Ezra McCandless. She moved to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where she met 33-year-old Jason Mengel (bottom left) in the summer of 2017. The two quickly became serious and within a month she moved in with him. Around this time she also met 23-year-old Alex Woodworth (bottom right), a philosophy major, at Racy's Cafe Lounge. In the fall of 2017, Ezra fell pregnant and underwent an abortion. Her relationship with Jason allegedly turned sour after this event. She began having a sexual affair with Alex around this time. Ezra would later claim that he would often make her dress and act as a boy during sex.
In February 2018, Ezra filed a police report against one of Jason's friends for sexual assault, claiming he had taken advantage of her while she was intoxicated. The case was dropped when Alex told investigators that Ezra confided to him that the sex was consensual but she was just worried about Jason finding out. Jason would soon find out about her affairs by going through her phone and promptly broke things off with Ezra. Ezra also broke up with Alex and tried hard to rekindle her relationship with Jason.
On March 22, 2018, an agitated Ezra popped into Racy's Cafe Lounge to talk to Jason, then left to go to Alex's house. Jason, feeling like Ezra was acting off, drove to Alex's house to see what was going on. A concerned neighbor called the police when they spotted Jason pacing outside. Police spoke with Ezra, Jason, and Alex, before determining there were no problems and leaving, including Jason. Ezra then invited Alex for a car ride to talk about things.
They stopped on a dirt road, and Ezra suddenly pulled out a knife and began stabbing Alex in the head, torso, groin, and neck. In total, he sustained 18 stab wounds and succumbed to his injuries. She then used the knife to carve the word ''BOY'' into her arm and began walking away from the crime scene, finding herself at Don Sipple's house. After police discovered Alex's body hanging out of Ezra's car, Ezra claimed that Alex attempted to rape her and she killed him entirely in self-defense. She claimed he carved the word ''boy'' into her arm after an argument ensued about her gender identity. The evidence found at the scene was not consistent with Ezra's story of self-defense, but it was consistent with cold-blooded murder.
On April 6th, 2018, Ezra McCandless was charged with first-degree intentional homicide. During her trial, she maintained her position that she killed him in self-defense. However, the prosecution argued that Ezra killed Alex because she felt he was responsible for her breakup with Jason. Ezra was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 50 years.

Quirky local girl Ezra Mccandless kills her (ex)boyfriend on March 22, 2018, leaving behind her the well crafted scene where Alex Woodworth’s body, bearing 16 knife stabs, hangs from the backseat of her uniquely quirky painted car; with her clothes self-slashed and her forearm now with the self-engraved word ‘boy’, she asks for help from a nearby farmer as she poses as a victim.

guys idk if you know this but CourtTv is back (old news apparently) but they have a ton of sweet trial coverage, the Ezra McCandless case was really good the website’s kinda weird to navigate, if u go to “recent coverage” on the home page that’s where you’ll find all the vids of less mainstream trials, the search won’t pull up trials by case name

Anyone else watching Ezra Mccandless' testimony.
I feel it in my whole being. That she did it on purpose.
The contradictions, the way she describes certain scenes, and the way she words her sentences reminds me of how I lie.
