History does not repeat itself but it does echo the past into the present. In order to understand the context of what happens now, those echoes must be listened to.

MacCready is down on his luck, recently divorced, and raising a toddler completely alone. Out of desperation, he asks Hancock for a job. Out of pity, Hancock gives him a trial run. Fahrenheit is a bitch, has always been one, and prides herself on that. Then she comes around to the idea.

By the way, did you hear about that "Ghoul Farm" where they tried to create Half-Mutants by kidnapping and breeding both feral and non-feral ghouls? And some of the ghouls escaped in a break-out planned by a ghoul that remains unnamed except for their initials, J.H.? Also, what is that weird tag-like rip in the mayor's ear that looks old but hasn't really closed up yet? I'm not a doctor but it looks to be in its late twenties. Isn't his 26-year-old bodyguard half-ghoul?

I'm going to share with you guys the next bit I have written for Book 3: Hope Restored in my FO4 fanfic series. This is shortly after the Brotherhood's tirade forced a lot of drifters and non-humans to take refuge in Goodneighbor.

I leaned back on the couch and stared at the ceiling, forcin' myself to keep a clear head so I could sift through all my thoughts. I was gettin' a goddamn headache again, though.

With the warehouses transformed into places where the influx of drifters can take shelter, I felt a little better that they weren't crowdin' the streets, but that didn't solve the issue of people pissin' and shittin' in the alleys and behind the buildings. It also didn't solve our food shortage, and that was about a hair's breadth away from gettin' out of hand.

It wouldn't be long before some of the more well-known caravans rolled through here, namely Trashcan Carla and Cricket, so I could check with them for supplies, but there was no way they were gonna have enough to supply the whole town.

Somethin's gotta give, and soon.

Fahrenheit sat across from me, drinkin' a beer and readin' a Guns and Bullets magazine that she had read so many times, the pages were startin' to fall out. She hadn't said much to me ever since the incident last night with the man and his son in the alley, where that prick threatened them.

"... I gotta address the town," I said, finally breakin' the deafening silence.

"What about?" she asked without lookin' up.

"About the conditions around here. I know they're stressed out there. They're gonna want answers before they riot."

She closed the magazine and slapped it onto the table. Then she crossed her arms and stared at her knees, but she didn't say a word.

"What? Nothin' to bitch about this time?"

"Like it'll do me any good anyway."

"Fahr..." I leaned forward, laced my fingers together, and propped my elbows on my knees. I gave her the most serious look I could muster. This thing between us — it had been goin' on for too damn long. "Talk to me."

"There's nothing to say. At the end of the day, I'm just here to do my job and earn my paycheck."

My fingers tightened around themselves. That shit hurt. It was meant to be personal. A low blow. I had to choose my next words carefully so this didn't turn into a full-scale argument. I unclenched my jaw and sighed. "... What aren't you happy with? Tell me what I can do to make things better between us. I'm tired of feelin' like everything I do is a fuck-up in your eyes. And I don't talk about this shit lightly. You and me, we've known each other for years. You should be able to be honest with me."

She placed both hands on the couch on either side of her, gripping its fabric with frustration, and leaned forward over the coffee table. Her words came out strained, like she was pissed but trying to hold it in. "I want things to go back to the way they were. The last eight years we've run this town have been carefree, enjoyable, and even fun. You just aren't the same person I knew from back then. Out of all the times you've been gone from Goodneighbor, you were never gone this long. And now, my worst fears have become a reality: you came back changed. You let yourself be influenced, and now you're ..." she motioned toward me with her hands, "... whatever you'd call this. Justified? Uppity? Noble?"

"That's not what this is. Hear me out. There are people out there sleepin' in their own filth, in the rain, under tarps and debris just to stay dry. It's hot as piss out there, and there's a shortage of clean water. They're starvin'. That kid last night coulda got shanked in the alley all because of some debt. Goodneighbor is dangerous. Used to, I liked it dangerous. I liked our reputation. We were badass, didn't take shit from anybody, lived life on our own terms. Now? Now it's not a place I'd wanna take my own kid to —"

"So that's what this is really about."

"Huh?"

"That kid. Gwen's kid. So you are just trying to make Goodneighbor like Diamond City. You want us to start conforming to a 'better way of life,' where there are laws and rules to follow."

"Is having a few laws that bad? I just want what's best for everyone. If it means clearin' out a few lowlifes to make the town safer for the honest folk driftin' in here —"

"Those 'lowlifes' are the people you used to scheme with, and you had no problem with them then. See, this is what I'm talking about, Hancock."

I rubbed my face roughly. She just refused to hear me. Or maybe I just refused to hear her. Either way, we just weren't gonna see eye to eye, and I was gettin' fed up. 

"I have friends that are lowlifes. Yeah, I have more friends than just you, believe it or not. When you're gone, I gotta talk to someone besides the neighborhood watch about work. And I'd rather not be one of the reasons my friends either got kicked out of Goodneighbor or wound up dead, because they have every right to be here as us. Some of them have been here since the beginning, and I'll be damned if I see them thrown to the ruins like your brother did to the Ghouls all those years ago. I don't want us to become like Diamond City. I don't want you to become your brother."

I kicked the table, knockin' everything around on top, my Jet canister fallin' onto the floor and the ashes in the ash tray flying onto the tabletop. "That wasn't him! That was the goddamned Synth that replaced him that kicked the Ghouls outta Diamond City! My brother would never do that!"

My breathing was uneven now. I had to calm down, get a grip. Fahr was really startin' to push my buttons.

"Hmph. Sometimes I wonder if even you have been replaced. If it wasn't for you being a Ghoul, I'd wager you were replaced, too. Because I feel like I barely recognize you anymore."

That's it. That was the straw that broke the goddamn Brahmin's back. "Whatever. You're just stickin' around for a paycheck, right? Then stop complainin' and do your job or I'll dock your pay. Every time you complain, I take ten caps off your tally. How's that sound?"

Her face went blank, eyes wide. "Are you shitting me?"

"Does it look like I'm in a jokin' mood?"

She stood up and walked across the room and to the safe. She took the keys out of her pocket and unlocked it.

"The hell are you doing?" I asked, standing up too.

"I'm taking what you owe me, and I'm leaving your employ."

"You're what!"

"You heard me." She counted out an amount from the safe and then slammed it shut. She tossed me the keys, and I didn't bother catching them, just let them clatter to the floor at my feet. "Have fun with your new Diamond City."

"You really gonna do this?"

She didn't answer me. She shoved her caps into her pockets and took a bag out of the closet. When she started packing shit into it, I realized just how serious she was.

"Fine, go, then. See if I give a shit. All you ever did was nag me anyway."

After her chems, booze, magazines, and spare bullets were packed, she slung her bag over her shoulder, walked out of the office, and slammed the doors behind her.

I was left with the silence. I didn't know what to do with this anger. This was the maddest I'd been in a while, and I hated it. I hated feelin' like this. I was too fucking sober to deal with this shit. God, it hurt so bad, I wanted to claw the pain out of my chest. Instead, I wound up punching a hole into the wall, kicking over the coffee table, throwing glass mugs against the filing cabinets, and pounding my fists in the top of the desk.

Once I had wreaked havoc on the furniture in my office, I was tired and out of breath, and my knuckles were bruised. I collapsed on the couch, not really feelin' much better, and took about six or seven Mentats, just hoping that somethin' would ease my mind.

that Shaun doesn't age. It literally makes no sense if the Gen 3 synths are more like clones than robots, but whatever stupid fallout Lore

additionally that gen 3 synths can't reproduce. IF THEY ARE CLONES THEIR BASICALLY JUST HUMANS WITH A CHIP IN THEIR BRAIN THAT CONTROLS IT OR AM I MISUNDERSTANDING SYNTHS?

That Maxson isn't a super detailed character. He had so much potential.... I get leaving some stuff up to fan interpretation, but come on now fans shouldn't have to give the man a personality because the writers wouldn't

That Cait is Irish and Vladim is Russian... it makes no damn sense considering bombs went off 200 years ago and no ones been in or out of the country since...

That the Lucy Maccready married wasn't the same Lucy from little lamplight

That Hancock isn't Fahrenheits father (adopted or otherwise)

That Danse and Curie are technically kinda related to the sole survivor and yet are still romancable (Sole is the parent of Shaun -> Shaun's DNA Created synths hence the title "father" -> Curie and Danse are synths)

That Danse can actually be really frickin dark sometimes (Send em back to hell while shooting at the BOS post BB.... like dude do you not know those people???)

That X6-88 just dosent realize or doesn't care enough to comment on the institute being blown up when like literally every other character does

Do Fo4 + NV Companions Play Caravan

Yes, I know Caravan isn't in fallout 4 but I have headcannons as to who plays it. Cause it's got to have travelled with the Caravans.

Fallout New Vegas

Cass - She 100% plays caravan. She was a caravaneer for years. She knows how to play and she's good at it. She also bets high on games of Caravan, both her own and other people's. Likes to place bets on who will win.

Boone - He knows how to play, he just doesn't care about playing He'd rather be on the lookout rather than playing the card game.

Arcade - Again he knows how to play, he's even looked into some strategies for playing. Some of the followers enjoy a good game after dinner. Occasionally he plays, but not very often, it's more of a social event than he's overly comfortable with.

Veronica - She didn't start playing till she started scavenging for the Brotherhood out of Trading Post 188. She gets fiercely competitive about it at times. Could go head-to-head with Cass and have a standing chance.

Raul - He's had years of experience. Probably helped refine some of the rules used across the Mojave. He traveled a lot and has seen many different renditions of Caravan so sometimes gets rules confused. He's always down for a friendly game to while away the nights on the road.

Lily - I can't see her playing caravan. She'd rather tell stories than play a game of caravan on an evening. I have no real justification, but I don't think the folks in Jacobstown really play caravan.

Fallout 4

Piper - She knows how to play, she and her sister play it on an evening when Pipers not writing

Valentine - He doesn't know how to play but would be willing to learn. He knows people that do play, including Ellie who learnt from a travelling merchant

Hancock - He knows how to play, he's very good at it. Preferse the fast-paced games but will play Fahrenheit on occasion

Danse - Doesn't know, doesn't want to know. He's never had anyone be willing to teach him. Though I imagine the Brotherhood has a game of a similar nature.

Deacon - He's one of the best players in the Commonwealth. He claims to be the one who brought Caravan to the east but no one can confirm this info. When downtime arises, he and Desdemona will play a game. She thinks he cheats

X6-88 - Doesn't play. He's never been taught, but if he is taught. He's good at it. Strategy is his thing. He's good at it. He doesn't gloat about it but will challenge Deacon to a game.

Preston - He picked it up from a trader and he and the minutemen play it on an evening. The castle has a room with tables and chairs that are only used for card games. He's challenged Ronnie Shaw on more than one occasion and had his ass whipped

Curie - She's curious about the game and will watch people play it. She can't get her head around the rules

Cait - Doesn't care enough to play. Would rather train than play such a slow-paced game.

Codsworth - has a hard time playing due to being a Mister Handy but he understands it. He referees games in Sanctuary

Strong - Doesn't care. It doesn't help him find the Milk of Human Kindness

MacCready - He's played a few games. He doesn't bet very high, not one to take unnecessary risks. He's good at it. Learnt to play in Goodneighbor. Plays against Daisy on slow nights.

Longfellow - A passing stranger to Far Harbour taught him how to play, ain't many people in town who want to play. He doesn't get a chance to play very often. But when he does he's good.

Gage - Two of the Traders in NukaWorld were playing and he forced them to teach him. He knows how to play but he's a sore looser. No one in Nuka World wants to play against him.

【Codsworth/Butler】 "My condolences, young master. They were a good friend." He is also distraught but he wants to stay strong for you. He gives them a proper memorial in the backyard.

【Dogmeat】 'Whine' Best doggo lays in your lap until you stop crying. He will miss his little bud.

【Curie】 "I am so sorry for your loss." She feels for you, she really does, but she knew this was coming. When she told you they were sick you didn't really heed her warning.

【Piper】 "Oh my God…" She is almost more distraught than you. It was only a few days ago they were crawling all over her and now they're gone.

【Deacon】 "Don't be sad. They were a good little buddy so their going to heaven. Think about it, paradise, all the sunflower seeds you could want." He is also super upset but he'll never show that. The idea is enough to lessen the blow.

【Preston】 "Let's bury them. Maybe we can go get some burgers down the street." He had a dog not to long ago and he had to go through this. So going through this fast is his main goal. He's trying to put down his own feelings but it still hurts because he loved the little guy.

【Nick/Uncle】 "I'm sorry, doll/pal." He doesn't dwell on words, choosing to pull you into a hug rather than give into his immediate panic of his crying niece/nephew.

【MacCready】 "…" He never had a pet and didn't really care about your little bud but the shock had him speechless. He doesn't really know what to do so he just lets you lay on him.

【Danse】 "They will be sorely missed." As military brat, he has always been around dogs and communal pets, he knows how hard a death of a pet can do.

【Hancock】 "Ugh-uh, ugh." He is ugly crying with you, sniveling, sobbing, the whole nine yards. Not only is his best-friend sad he lost a part of the family too. Devastated.

【Fahrenheit】 "It's gonna be alright, just let it out." You might think she's being apathetic but she really is just waiting for you and Hancock to calm down so she can get you both right again. There is nowhere she'd rather be than here.

【Vadim/Uncle】 "We shall see them off properly." With tears in his eyes he talks you both down before telling you the proper way to see loved ones off, a funeral pyre. If you disapprove he won't do it, but if you do he starts taking everything to the cement driveway.

【Yefim/Uncle】 "I know it hurt, but come back inside." He coax you into not burning the body, at least not when you're still feeling the loud emotions of it just happening. If you want their ashes he'll get it for you. Later he chastises Vadim for trying to light a fire in the driveway.
