i like to think that- in their own ways - mao's dorm mates: kuro, izumi, and shu, are really protective over him because he's the youngest of the group and also because of the way he is (overworking, small, selfless, forgets to eat, etcetera.)

i think i just had an okay idea for an enstars fanfic, and it involves the famdorm being the main guys (because this dorm group deserves more love!!! ahem anyways....)

inspired by famdorms outfits here:

THE IDEA:

in different universes, ensemble square is a different place but they still do the same thing: you've got the normal universe that has ensemble square as we know and see, then there's one where everyone is a creature like demons, vampires, angels, merfolk, and etcetera. a third alternative universe has ensemble square looking all steampunk-esque, and the last universe ensemble square is a kingdom full of royalty and what-have-you down the line.

although all these different universes that has ensemble square in are different for their own themes and meanings, there is one thing they all have in common and it's not just of the faces of every guy either... it's their impending doom. the end to ensemble square entirely.

every enstarsverse goes through the same trouble of mishap of having the square being set to ablaze, and the founder of who started the major crime is never found nor does anyone survive... or so one would think, in a way.

four different guys (aka the famdorm) from four of these different universes after the impending doom was caused wake up in this void that only has a few things in it: a set of chairs surround a big rectangular and dark wooden table. on the table would be a set of cards, similar to tarot cards or poker cards depends how you want to see it as and all four of these guys from the different universes are given the same forced rule: to save the other different universes ensemble squares from being sent to blitz before any more trouble is caused, and the only way they can do that? is by choosing a singular card each for themselves for different rounds of "playing cards."

besides the cards, there's also a journal. the guys can't write in it. there's no pen or pencil or any other writing utensils around to use. the journal writes itself after the four guys make their choices after picking a card.

but what happens if they don't save an ensemble square in a different universe? it's simple...and scary... depends how you see it: they get hurt themselves and their timer of death starts ticking down slowly unless they help save another universes ensemble square.

His laughter echoed in the dorm room.

His chatter was the only words to be spoken.

Mao was too oblivious to his dorm mates watching the scenario going on.

A week ago, Mao had found an unwell kitten on the side of the main road near the campus grounds - at first, he did take the little kitten to a veterinary to see and get them checked out or to see if the kitten was homeless or a lost one.

For that week, Mao had to wait and put up posters and online photos on social media about the kitten to see if anybody would answer about being their owner. There was no answer at all during those long days, and the veterinary he went to said to look after the kitten if no owner owned up to their words, which led to now.

The kitten adored Mao, never once leaving his side, even during practice hours and school duties.

Mao was thankful that none of the teachers or anyone else had a go at him for the kitten. Everyone seemed to support the idea of Mao looking after them, in fact.

The kitten, in some way, although not registered as one, was like an emotional support animal for him.

"Come on, stop that, will you!" The grin never left Mao's face as the kitten rubbed the top of their head against his neck, causing ticklish sensations down his skin as they purred.

"Hey!" Mao suddenly huffs as the kitten then pokes their tongue out and kisses him on his cheek.

The kitten just kept playing with Mao, causing him to move about and laugh even louder, even when the cat began pummelling and dribbling from being in a soppy moment which made Mao cringe for just a moment during his time of cheer.

"Are we not going to tell him that school starts in less than half an hour for him?" Stands the trio of Kuro, Shu, and Izumi all sitting on one side watching Mao be pummelled by the kitten, his uniform becoming a mess.

Kuro turns to Izumi, who asked the question, "maybe soon, but let's leave him for a couple minutes more, it's nice seeing him act like a proper kid for once, I'm sure Himemiya and the others wouldn't mind if their president is late to his duties just for today.”

"Fingers crossed he isn't late every day starting from now because of the kitten..." Shu grumbles, looking away from the cute scene of his youngest dorm mate playing about as a tut leaves between his teeth.

None of his dorm mates were within the room, Mao Isara was thankful for that.

The room was dark. He didn't bother switching the lights on. The darkness brought a rare time of comfort that nothing else could at that very moment, especially with the thoughts that whisped his mind in a jumble.

Mao already felt tired, but he wasn't going to bed to regain energy. The day was full of liveliness. From the powering song he sang for a performance with the rest of Trickstar to the amount of work he was assigned in the student council office room, with a few of his teachers scolding him for going into a daze during normal lessons and even during today's practice hour with the basketball club.

So much chaos went down with a few members who decided to be such delinquents during the long hour. He'd honestly have to give it to his senior - Chiaki for once being the leader of the club and able to handle everything so well before him.

He places his school bag onto his bed, letting the object tilt harshly backwards as the flap attempts to detach itself away from the velcro that held itself together. He then slips his school blazer off, along with the pink jumper and his tie, placing the three clothing pieces atop of the surface of his chest of drawers at the end of his bed.

His school shoes had already slipped off as soon as he entered the dorm room, nudging them underneath the gap of his bed so they're not sitting in the walkway of the shared room. He didn't want his dorm mates to be tripping over his stuff if they came back to the campus grounds tonight.

Mao then reaches his hands towards the top of his polo top, undoing two buttons for some extra room to breathe. Polo tops can be the worst piece of clothing sometimes, Mao thinks to himself.

He pauses for a second from where he stands and glances around the dark room. Everything was so still. Left to how it was since the early hours of this very morning.

Usually, Mao would feel something mixing with the beats of his heart when he reminisced about situations that had gone on in this very dormitory building. The chaos. The fun. The talks that were shared as some secrets were spilt. Everything...

...But right now, his heart beats along by itself. Nothing sat beside it to give him the usual sense of encouragement that awaited by tomorrow's hands.

Mao twists his figure around and walks over to his bed. He kneels down as low as he could as he peeks underneath, reaching one hand far under the bed, his fingers brushing faintly against something that feels familiar.

He's tried using this object before for a situation he was going to try out again.

It needed to happen, he thought to himself. He hoped the second time was the charm in succeeding instead of the third or more attempts after that.

Once the item was in his hands, Mao immediately stumbled to a stand as he gripped onto the said object tightly and took some quiet steps towards the dorm room's shared bathroom.

The bathroom door opens with a slight squeak whilst Mao tiptoes inside. He shuts the door immediately behind himself. He glances around the bathroom. All the usual was there. A simplistic toilet and a sink, alongside a shower box in the far right corner.

The ceilings on each floor of the dormitory were high. It reminded him of how he imagined a tower belonging to a castle to be. So tall to fit as many things as possible inside of, for reasons that everyone thinks and for reasons that only those who observe think too.

Mao was observant when he needed to be. He was glad to be the observant type, especially now with the action he was about to cause.

He glances down at the big item in his hold. The rough feeling that made his palms itch from the horrible stuff it was made out of.

It was a rope.

Already tied with a tight knot ready for this situation to happen.

From where he stands, up above him was the hanging light with a lightshade wrapped around it to cast a much better glow than what the usual yellow light would beam by itself.

A stepladder sits beside the sink. It was an odd piece to have in a bathroom, but it wasn't theirs to begin with. The stepladder belongs to Jin Sagami. He brought the stepladder in last week, filling in some holes that were in the bathroom ceiling. Jin Sagami told Mao and his dorm mates that he would be back 'soon' to collect them. He didn't know when soon was, but Mao was glad that Jin Sagami had left the stepladder behind now.

He places the rope down onto the closed-lid toilet for a second and walks to the stepladder. He unfolds them and directs them where he needed them to be placed. Mao then grabs the rope again and heads up the stepladder, reaching on the tip of his toes as he ties a smaller knot once attaching the rope around the hanging light above its lights shades.

Mao then turns himself around from where he stood on the stepladder, having the knotted rope in front of his figure. He casts a glance towards it for a second, reaching for the looped part as he leaned his whole figure forward.

The cold seeps into the dormitory, the wind outside howled as it begged Kuro to be let inside once he steps through the doors of the large building.

For the past week and a bit, the tall redhead was away at home caring for his sister, who was ill. His parents were too busy with work to look after their daughter, so he offered to take some time off idol duties to look after her until she felt somewhat stronger and better.

It felt nice to be back in the dormitory, Kuro would admit that as he walked through the long corridor to reach the stairs. The warmth of the inside of the building caresses his skin with a gentle touch whilst walking up to his floor.

It was also fairly odd in seeing the place so empty and quiet, but saying all that, the time that Kuro appeared back onto campus grounds was extremely late, and most of the dormitories residents are most likely asleep by now. Except for a minus few that he knew would definitely be up and awake past the dark hours.

That was also another reason why Kuro was glad to come back to the dormitory. He was needed, rather. With both Izumi and Shu also being away, one of them three needed to be in the dorm room with their youngest dorm mate to remind the beaujolais-haired boy about sleep. About how important it was to get some shut-eye, whether he would listen to Kuro or not this time, the redhead wasn't sure.

He eventually comes across his dorm room, and with twisting the door handle down and pushing the wooden body of the door to the side, he steps into the room.

Kuro slid his coat off and placed it onto one of the few pegs screwed into the door, sliding his boots off and leaning them against the skirting board. He then turns around and only realises how dark the room was, so he presses a white button on the wall. The yellow hued lights flicker to life, a very faint buzzing noise coming from them as he does so.

"Isara?" His voice echoes in the barren area. His hearing waivers as he then hears a bunch of noise coming from the bathroom. He turns towards where the noise came from and walks up to the door, knocking on it a few times as he leaned his ear against the body of the wood. "Isara - are you in there?"

Kuro waited a few seconds to see if a response would come from the inside. But there was nothing at all, only the noise of something creaking. The redhead taller decides to place his hand on the handle, twisting it down as he warns the younger that he was coming in.

The door creaks open as Kuro takes one step inside. His head peeks past the door.

"Shit! Isara!"

"Any word about him?" Shu Itsuki asks.

"Not yet. The medics are still going through the process of the scans. They said it can take up to an hour or two with this kind of stuff." Kuro paces back and forth in the hospital's many waiting areas. He was on a video call with his other two dorm mates - Shu and Izumi.

"This is so fucked up. Why would he..." Izumi trailed off.

Kuro only sighs as he stops pacing and decides to sit down on one of the few chairs. With one leg over the other as he leaned one elbow against the knee. "Anything could have caused the kid to do it. He's one of Yumenosaki's mysteries, after all. No one knows as much about him, if you think about it. Despite everything, under all that happiness he shows."

"You're right..."

A feminine voice calls Kuro's full name out. He looks up to see a nurse waving him over. He stands back up again as he walks towards them. He waited patiently as the nurse talked about Mao's conditions, completely forgetting that he was still on video call to his other dorm mates on the phone.

"Is it okay to visit him now?"

"Of course, if you follow me this way." The nurse smiled softly towards Kuro.

Kuro walks on for a few minutes a few steps behind the nurse as they walk through plenty of corridors and round many corners. Seven minutes later they stop by a room.

"I would suggest keeping your voice low as he is asleep as of this moment due to the dose he was given a couple of minutes ago."

Kuro nods. "Thank you, miss."

"It's no problem, the office is just around the corner to the left here, so if anything bad happens, be sure to find one of us in there."

The nurse then leaves as Kuro presses a small button beside the room's door that opens with a click. He pushes the door open and steps inside.

Mao was lying in the hospital bed, his head propped onto the pillow with a few other ones laying either side of him to keep his head lying straight. Kuro decides to take a seat on a chair nearby, scooting it quietly and closer to the bed.

He frowns when seeing a faint red marking on Mao's neck, a reminder of how Kuro saw Mao previously.

"Are you in the room with him?" Shu asked with curiosity. Kuro taps on his phone screen, having his angle change from focusing on him and onto Mao now.

"Yeah, there he is. The nurse said he'll be alright, other than a few things you may have just heard."

"I never knew he could look so fragile..." Izumi mumbles, his voice muffling for a few seconds as he fiddled with his own phone to get a better look at the youngest of the quadripartite.

Minutes afterwards and Kuro was off the phone from the other two, his focus staying fully on Mao as thoughts flew through his mind at many miles an hour.

He exhales a slow breath and then lightly holds onto one of Mao's hands. The major senses of worry and protectiveness caged his heart, causing a painful and cold feeling in his chest.

"One step at a time... we promise to be there for you, Isara. But it's up to you on whether or not you will let us in. No matter how long it takes. We love and care for you too much, I wish you also recognised that… for whatever reason you attempted this for.”

alright a few of you asked for the list. here's a long list of mao isara headcanons! (mostly old-)

1. has scars in some places of his body (neck especially) due to r’s stupid past actions.

2. subaru gifted him the pink jacket as a beginning of friendship thing.

3. uses a reminder app to remind him when to take breaks from work.

4. dry lips/constantly bitten lips.

5. definitely autistic. maotism #real.

6. favourite chocolate is chilli flavoured and dark.

7. keeps a diary where he vents his true feelings out.

8. has a teddy with him at the dorms that his parents gave to him when he was a baby. he keeps it on his bedside drawers.

9. wears mismatched socks a lot.

10. has different coloured hair clips that his little sister used to own & ones she bought him for his birthdays/christmases over the years.

11. has freckles that can only be seen under some form of light.

12. dry hands/rough hands but only smally.

13. can't feel pain in the arms due to the various work he has done over the years.

31. during the first week of moving into the dorms, he forgot to pack some needed clothes and so, kuro had to borrow a spare pair for mao, even though the clothing was far too big for mao. he looked like a baby in kuro's clothing. (mao is baby though– off topic oops.)

32. mao has a secret stash of snacks under his bed at the dormitory. nobody but himself knows about it. not even kuro knows and he's there a lot other than mao himself at the dorm…

33. souma is teaching mao how to use and hold the katana. mainly to help mao get slowly over his fear of sharp things. sometimes shinobu and tsukasa will join in and help souma help mao with overcoming his fear.

34. his social media posts are a pattern. announcement about trickstar, post about a manga, something silly, then announcement, manga post, and then repeat.

35. didn't stop believing in santa, the tooth fairy, etcetera, until he was thirteen.

36. his little sister is the reason why he had developed a sweet tooth (she bakes a lot at the family home!)

37. his lock screen wallpaper on his phone is of him and the rest of trickstar whilst his home screen wallpaper is of him and his sister.

38. has been sent to the hospital plenty of times due to over exhaustion/overworking, and drinking far too many energy drinks. sometimes even being low on sugar/lack of food and such. the guy just works too much, man… and so selfless.

39. he writes little scenarios about him and trickstar. not anything weird, just things he wishes that were possible to achieve with them all.

40. one of his top favourite manga genres is fantasy.

41. gets hokuto to cosplay manga characters with him sometimes, even though hokuto knows nothing about manga.

42. has a large collection of oversized onesies thanks to subaru.

43. tends to have nightmares more than dreams when he does attempt at sleeping.

44. has attempted at dyeing his hair a few times, mostly for cosplaying, but he's really bad at dyeing his own hair.

47. subaru somehow has this odd magical touch that when he boops mao on the nose, mao sneezes a little. don't question. it's them after all.

48. the first game makoto got mao to play was a fighting game, but it was too much for mao at that time to the point that he got scared of the game for a long while until makoto reeled him in way later on for a retry when he was more confident.

49. has a scrapbook dedicated to fanart that fans make of him.

50. 2wink likes to drag mao out into town to hangout with them. by shopping, going to playful places, etcetera.

51. speaking of 2wink, one april fools time, the twins made mao dye his hair orange and have it down, they pranked rei and koga during band “bb”’s circle hangout time about how the twins had a secret triplet. nobody but mao himself and the twins knew that it was just mao whilst rei was amuses and koga freaked out.

52. was born small when was a baby. (like, abnormally…!)

53. when mao is really tired also, any of the members of trickstar let's him lie his head on their lap, and he let's them stroke his hair to relax him (especially subaru-)

54. when in cheeky mode and he does his giggle, he sticks his tongue out of the corner of his mouth. (think: phil lester…)

55. often forgets that he has an allergy/hay-fever during spring and etcetera.

56. smells like bubblegum. what bubblegum? just bubblegum flavour bubblegum. yes. no questions.

57. the apps in his phone are sorted alphabetically and only take up 2-3 slides of the home screen.

58. when he's really excited, he balls his hands really tightly together to the point of almost hurting himself of digging his fingernails into his palms without knowing. especially mainly does this when excited about stuff he gets to rant about freely.

59. has dimples.

60. (this is in !!-y2 from jp) mao has been spending more time at trickstudio than the dorms, even sleeping there half the time. with and without the rest of trickstar.

63. the type of guy who nibbles on chocolate/food in general.

65. likes to do that cracking knuckles/hand thing after doing a stretch or after focusing on some particular work for so long. idk what the cracking thing is called. icr.

67. once couldn't find his hairclip(s) and so he went through a whole day with his hair down, due to that, some people mistakened him for a younger brother or some form of relative to ibara.

68. when reading manga in his bedroom or the shared dorm, he tends to lie upside down on his bed with his feet against the wall and hair nearly dragging against the flooring.

69. gets really excited whenever the famdorm are all together and when they get to have some tea together, but he tries his best in not showing it because he wants to seem "mature" with all three of his seniors who are his said dorm mates.

70. almost burnt the kitchen down when doing a cooking session with kuro.

71. when listening to some particular music, he does the hand motions of some instrument playing: guitar strings, drum play, etcetera. he doesn't notice he does unless someone points it out to him.

72. alongside akatsuki merchandise as mentioned before, mao also likes to collect fine merchandise - especially things related to eichi.

73. tends to trip around the dorm room especially when in speedy mode, because of how messy the dorm is (the mess part is actually canon and mentioned in an interaction voice line between him and kuro on home screen!)

74. runs a secret side fan account on a social media platform where he posts anything to do with manga and tv shows he's into! no one knows that he runs this account ♪

75. secretly loves headpats despite what he says in his first idol story.

76. dorm mates often remind mao to brush his hair due to its length and such, especially when it's let down.

small random fictoship/maoru facts #2:

even before the two got together, in enstarsverse rumi found it safe and comforting to be around mao more than anyone else, and thus the reason why they're moreso "latched onto him" more than the rest. he's like a safety net and he never judges on why they want to be with him more than everyone. attachment issues are sucky more than half the time.

in enstarsverse rumi does like using their shared dorm with anzu, don't get them wrong, but sneaking into mao's and just being able to huggle up to him is better. kuro doesn't judge, and anzu doesn't mind. izumi and shu are more than a lot away from the shared famdorm room anyway. although... when either of the two are there, izumi and/or shu can get highly defensive over seeing the couple being so close together in bed.

when it comes to the times of people in the dorms needing to go home for whatever the procedure may be, due to bad stuff going on at home for them, rumi doesn't go to their own home, they either go to mao's or mao (with the help of makoto and some others) finds a budget hotel for the two to stay in and just accompany each other for however long it may be.

when rumi does sleep in their bed, on their bedside table are two teddy bears holding paws (instead of- hands...), and resting on the laps of the bears is a small wooden sign that mao commissioned someone in a local area downtown to create that has small messages he got carved for rumi, alongside with calling them his "true finder," and a few other nicknames.

mao and rumi have come up with their own version of sign language that only the two know that the two use when rumi goes nonverbal at any given time.

when the two go to arcades, carnivals, and etcetera, the two always go into battle-mode to see who can win the most prizes within a certain amount of time, and whoever loses has to pick the next date. (spoiler alert: mao wins a lot. though sometimes he'll find a way to purposefully lose somehow in the bet just to take the anxiety and stress off from rumi.)

back when the two were in school with mao being the student council president, rumi sneaked a sofa (with the help of bribing some other students to bring it in) into the office just so they know mao has somewhere albeit more comfier to rest himself whenever he stayed overtime in school to do some work.

idea that: because mao is out of school, he and even some others around him, help him find ways of setting up reminders in some form of way into getting back into eating normally and such and focusing on health alongside of doing idol work! i mean... he has less stuff to stress about, so~

he asks midori and the twins what fruit and vegetables and etcetera are best to eat for certain things, and asks niki, and subaru about snack stuff and etcetera.

but also, he still has slip ups where the only food he'll eat during a day or a few is still just ramen when he does eat, because that's what he is used to more so anyway, it's a habit he's trying to break still, but it's difficult-

he's taking the opportunity of having freedom to at last find ways to help himself! ...and to also maybe get all three of his dormmates off his back about his health habits! (famdorm my beloved fave dormmm <3)

maybe when he goes out and about to see what food he can eat to help with his health and such, he sometimes brings nagisa and/or kohaku and etcetera along to let them have a treat for whatever reason too!

thinking about the famdorm interactions between in-game shu and mao where shu likes to watch mao practice because he worries for him in his own way due to how mao neglects his health. and mao also getting excited in another line where he finds out shu likes manga. and of course the line where mao asks shu if he can make him an outfit sometime and shu in his own words agrees to it-
