🐉RATING:🔥🔥🔥🔥/5 The Family Outing, by Jessi Hempel, is an intimate memoir about family secrets and overcoming trauma on the path to self-actualization. Hempel’s journalistic approach to this project is unique. As the author, her family’s story is unavoidably skewed toward her point of view, but she is careful to include the perspectives of her parents and siblings throughout. All five family members agreed to the project and actively participated in interviews. The “outing” in the title refers to how each and every family member outed their secrets. Not just secrets they kept from each other, but the secrets they kept from themselves. For Jessi, her father, and her siblings, identifying as queer was only part of their long and winding process of self-actualization. Even when detailing their worst moments, Hempel treats her family with love and respect. Both her mother and father failed to parent their kids. And while Hempel doesn’t shy away from sharing the damage this caused, she also speaks of her parents with empathy. Looking back, with the knowledge she has today, she knows how emotionally broken her parents were. She recognizes the scars they carried from their own childhoods. The emotional pull of this memoir is intense. My heart broke for Jessi and her siblings, neglected by their parents and coping in their own unique ways. But there is hope, too. The reader is aware from the start that this story will have a positive ending, despite the setbacks. It doesn’t feel right to say that I “enjoyed” this very personal and sometimes painful story of the Hempel family. But I was engaged throughout, and I wish Jessi, her parents, and her siblings the peace and joy they have worked so hard to attain. ❓Which memoir or other non-fiction book do you recommend? True history of Kim's family
Tumblr media
After high school my father, Jossiv was known to make his first money by small thefts and falsification of documents. In the beginning of 90s when USSR became Russian Federation, he used the loopholes in legal space to get credits in several commercial banks and all my family moved to Poland without paying the debt back before he was eventually arrested in Italy for selling stolen items and goods which resulted into imprisonment in Florence, Italy.

"Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya tomorrow, you're only a day away." I used to wind up a jewelry box at my grandmothers apartment and the song "tomorrow" from Orphan Annie would play, and I was 5 or 6...wearing this old red teddybear t-shirt that my gram had, and id wind it up over and over and sing to it until she would roll out of bed with a smile. That song is the only thing on my mind and keeping me sane while I wait for the news of tomorrow...the surgery...we won't know anything until tomorrow. Tomorrow is always a day away and it feels like eternity. Please send thoughts and prayers for my grandmother. This is a very hard time and our small family, my mother and I, have a lot on our plate. We may not have tomorrow..please send your love, and may the Goddess bring peace to the matriarch of my small blood family, and may the Goddess i trust and the God she believed in see her through this pain. May her sins be washed away and may her love only remain, and the love we share with her remain. The Crone, the Mother, and The Maiden, we three musketeers. #prayers #thoughts #family #familystories #memories #lovedones #showyoursupport #familylove #grandmother #love #eldercare #grief #lovethem #pagan #goddess #cronemothermaiden #crone #mother #maiden #ilovemygrandma #selfhelp #sharelove #showlove #loveothers #bethankful https://www.instagram.com/p/Ciqv5clOg-b/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Crazy true story I need to vent about:
Tumblr media
So a few days before my birthday my brother “X” was going into psychosis because he has schizophrenia and so some of my family while I was at school and unaware still, were attempting to get him to get help in the hospital. Well…
Police arrived before the ambulance to take him to get help and he’s normally non violent and has never gotten to anything like this before. We were all freaked out(when I found out later on into the event). My brother went into a rage and didn’t know who his one family members were… he suddenly grabbed a knife from the utensil drawer and charged right at my other brother(Y) who was at the kitchen table of my mom’s apartment. My brother “Y” avoided this and ran to the door and slammed it shut. X tried to get thru the door and my brother Y and my dad held the door. Cops came up and held a taser but it looked like a gun so my brother Y and dad yelled don’t shot! They tased him right when my mom came out of the bathroom and screamed don’t shoot because she thought it was a gun. Brother X got up and grabbed the knife, he darted towards my mother who was turned away for a split second at her door. X stabbed my mom two to three times from what I could tell.
Anyways… traumatic right? Well I wasn’t there for this event, and I’m grateful. My mom went to the hospital and is healing now it’s been about 2 weeks. My brother X is in jail and has had one court date, many to come. I hope he actually gets help and not incriminated. He was insane and not himself at all. My whole family is shocked, I swear the aftermath of the blood, I cared for my mom for 4 nights 4 days before I had to go back to school and work. I’ve had plenty of trauma myself and can’t imagine what my brother is going through not even understanding what he did. He has no idea, he was crying on the phone we cant even tell him fully what happened until court again. He missed thanksgiving, I brought food to my mom but pretty sure she has PTSD just like I’ve experienced. Now he’ll miss Christmas… We’re all hurting from this, this fucking sucks. It’s hard watching your family member slowly deteriorate…my brother is so lost and I wish I could help him. Only time will tell.

In a world of big family gatherings and endless posts showcasing close-knit relationships, it's natural to feel a pang of jealousy when your own family circle is small. Growing up with a limited family presence can leave an ache in your heart, a longing for the kind of bonds that others seem to effortlessly share.
In my own journey, the landscape of family is marked by its smallness. My mom's family, scattered across Canada and Germany, remains distant due to the miles and unmet faces that separate us. On my dad's side, silence prevails, leaving me with no contact and an unfillable void where connections should have been. Jealousy is a persistent companion, whispering doubts and insecurities as I witness others bask in the warmth of large, united gatherings.
Meeting my husband and becoming part of his family brought a glimmer of hope. Hopes that, perhaps, my longing for close family bonds would finally find a place to root itself. But, entering my husband's family wasn't without its challenges.
Fresh out of a second failed marriage for him, and in the midst of a divorce myself, we faced skepticism and guarded hearts. It wasn't a smooth path, but as time gently carved its way forward, some walls came down, replaced by genuine connections.
Ten years ago, I took on the role of stepmother to his two young sons, a role that has become integral to my identity. And while the family connections weren't instant, bonds slowly but surely found their place. The warmth of his family began to seep into my heart, reminding me that family doesn't always come with a predetermined script. In the beginning, I tried so hard to earn their acceptance, unknowingly chasing a sense of belonging that would come naturally in time. Slowly, I realized that the key wasn't in trying to fit a mold, but in embracing my own authentic self. As the years passed and I healed from my personal struggles, the connections deepened, allowing me to forge relationships with his three brothers and one sister (& their spouses).
Though our relationships may not mirror those in storybooks, they're real and significant in their own way. They've filled spaces within my heart that yearned for connections, offering me the feeling of belonging that I had longed for. My in-laws might be a little crazy and sometimes dysfunctional, but their love is undeniable and unconditional. What strikes me most about this family is their unity. They are always willing to drop everything at a moment's notice to support each other, a loyalty that embodies the essence of what family truly means.
So, to my brothers and sisters-in-law, thank you. Thank you for accepting me, for embracing me, and for filling a void I thought could never be filled. You've shown me that family is about support, and genuine connections that grow over time. In you, I've found the aunts and uncles my daughter adores, and the family I've always longed for. The journey continues, and with each passing day, I am grateful for the story of love and belonging that we're creating together.
