I find it very amusing how Zabu was initially presented as some mischievous troublemaker alongside Komao in their debut episode only for him to not only be the unintentional catalyst for the gang war (although then again Akutaro used him and manipulated him into fighting the leader of the NG Boys), being the one who saved Matakara in Episode 5 but there’s also the fact that his name is an allusion to Disney Aladinn’s animal companion, Abu.

Winter 2024 Anime watchlist

1. MASHLE: MAGIC AND MUSCLES Season 2

I really liked season 1, very fun, hilarious, the perfect anime to have a good time. Watched the new episodes and I'm still on board!!

2. Dungeon Meshi

For some reason, I think there's something missing for me to be completely invested in it, but I like it! The art style is really good and colorful, the characters are fun and I love all the cooking stuff, so i'll keep watching.

3. Solo Leveling

It's too early for me to really know if I like it or not. I haven't read the webtoon so I'm going in totally blind. For the moment, there's nothing new or groundbreaking, but I'm intrigued!

4. BUCCHIGIRI?!

I was actually excited about this one, I like new animes, especially original creations, and it was directed by Hiroko Utsumi, so I had to add it to my list! I watched the first episode and it's not really what I expected after watching the trailer, but it seems fun enough to continue, I'm curious.

5. Cherry Magic!

I watched the drama and it was so so cute, I couldn't skip the anime, honestly. The first episode is good, nice paced and the animation is cute!

6. Mr. Villain's Day Off

Cute anime, a very enjoyable slice of life where we follow a villain on his days off. Nothing much happens, the mc is just obsessed with pandas and sometimes interacts with other characters, but it's nice when you just want to watch something and chill.

You know your “saving the thing for last” syndrome is doing you a disservice when you get spoiled about a character death and you have to decide to either minimise the damage by finally watching it asap before you also find out the HOW or wait until you forget about it (3-6 years in my case depending how badly interested I am in said media; the more I want to see it, the more I wait… 😬) in which case you risk of also getting spoiled of key-elements of the story before their intended time and ruining the pleasure…

The two of you eye the classroom, bowing politely. You glance at Arajin and freeze, his eyes trained on a lone girl who had a listless expression. You look away, frowning meekly.

You and Arajin had been given a strange fate.

Chased by gangsters, running into a shrine as he found gun inside.

Yet as he pressed the trigger, you were grazed by the bullet as it lodges itself in his head.

You stood frozen as the genine.. Or, Saya for short. Had circled his body around your frightened form. Yet he grins in a friendly manner, meeting your unsure gaze.

You and Arajin eagerly question the genie and realize he was stuck with you, too.

Yet when Arajin told his wish, the thought of Mahoro Jin in his mind...

"Hmm.. What is it you wish for..?"Your eyes widen, mouth parting slightly as you trace the bandaid on your cheek. "Your friend wants to lose his virginity." Senya stated as you blink, face blank but nodding.

"I-I..." You take a timid breath of air, making sure Arajin wasn't in the room, you spoke.

Senya watches eagerly as your gaze became... Determined.

You watch as your friend turns away and throws a look at his friends. Senya yells excitedly in your ears.

You gulp, walking away quickly.

He calls out your name urgently, yet you just start running as Senya screams.

"Oi! Why are you running!" Senya screams as you run into the girls' restroom. Holding your chest, breathing heavily.

"Eh~?" The leader drawls out, gazing at your features. But.. You didn't back down, merely holding out your arms to block Arajin from his sights.

You really didn't want your friend to go on that date with Mahoro...

You made yourself sick with worry, so..

"Follow them!" Senya exclaimed brightly, poking at your shoulder as he pushes you after them.

Leading you into the situation of hiding in bush as you watched Arajin and Mahoro on their date..

Senya kept giving you pep-talks as you try to focus your brain on anything else.

That was until.. Mahoro' brother showed up.

"Ha..." Marito breathes out, the fierce look you had given him.. It was raw, as if your eyes managed to land a hit on him.

Senya couldn't help but smirk, enjoying your confidence.

Before aiding Arajin into fighting the green haired delinquent.

Unfortunately, you as well.

"What is it exactly you wish for...?" Senya yells as you and Arajin scream together.

"I want to lose my virginity!"

"And..?"

With a small breath, you join.

"I want to fall in love!"

Jumping as a loud thud rang out into the mostly quiet cabin. You quickly turned around and sighed just seeing a book that fell off the table.

In all honesty, I always find it disturbing how around the time Episode 10-11 of BUCCHIGIRI?! has aired, the hate towards Matakara sounds very close to victim blaming.

Like, ok was it wrong of him to beat up random gang members, targeting Hagure and then brutalizing him and Jabashiri, then later on, brutalize Marito to the point that he is in a coma for weeks, therefore almost subjecting Mahoro to the same feelings he felt when he heard news of his brother’s critical injury? Yes. Yes it is.

Was it wrong of him to betray the whole of Minato Kai, brutalizing Zabu then Kenichiro, throw away the last remaining piece of Mitsukuni right in front of the latter, who has known Mitsukuni for a long time? Yes it is.

But do I ever blame him for acting like that? No. Because do you want to know who was the real culprit? Ichiya. And why is that? It’s pretty clear that this genie only viewed Matakara as a pawn.

When Matakara tried to question about what he’s doing, do you know what Ichiya does? Bring up the one thing that mentally traumatizes Matakara: the dark lurking shadows. If Matakara resists? Use the dark shadows again.

And it became clear that if Matakara doesn’t follow through with Ichiya’s plan of boosting the merge rate, Ichiya would gaslight Matakara by using his childhood trauma.

I won’t deny that Matakara isn’t perfect by any means and that he has flaws like any typical 16 year old boys, but him being manipulated by Ichiya is not one of them.

Nanami anon here. I really hope they develop Mahoro with these sorts of themes in mind. I can't believe I forgot the princess aspect of Nanami, it's such a big thing in Utena in regards to self delusion and how people end up stuck in gendered social roles. This general perspective is what's keeping me interested in Bucchigiri cuz I can see so much potential for that sort of depth. I'm so glad I could help spark this sort of discussion (it's been sorta hard to find people willing to engage with these kind of interpretations).

Yes I think this story is so interesting even just in the potential it sets up. If it doesn't deliver on that potential it could be disappointing, I guess. but it brings up a lot of interesting discussions either way, so I'm just enjoying where we are right now and the conversations going on in the criminally tiny fandom.

To be completely honest i spent a lot of time arguing with people about the literary worth of this show on another platform and it was just depressing. Nobody wanted to engage deeper than surface level appeal, and only would approach it through an extremely narrow lens of expected tropes of the type of show *they* wanted to watch, and a demand for pandering to one type of fan in a genre it doesn't even really belong to, instead of honestly approaching it for what it is and the story it's trying to tell. I've been trying to curate my experience more so I can actually enjoy myself, and interacting with the small community of people here who actually like to enjoy and analyze the show within the literary conversation it's clearly trying to have has been so much more fulfilling.

ANYWAY, I love what you're bringing up because self-delusion is such a big theme here! and specifically how it interacts with compulsory gender roles!!! Like, Arajin is trying so hard to fulfill compulsory heterosexuality, but is running away from the very masculine coded honor-through-fighting that senya and the general culture value. A lot of people suspect that his pursuit of losing his virginity is a way to make up for his self-perceived weakness and failure to uphold the masculine ideal of honor-through-fighting when he was young.

THEN when MAHORO stands up and displays that ideal, he is able to achieve it (at least for a moment). There's also discussion that if this follows Aladdin, he's going to lose the genie and some point and will have to essentially prove himself as honorable without the genie's help. This could be interesting. We'll see what happens.

So is fighting masculine coded in this show? Or is it just the height of honor? Or is fighting for the right reasons or in the right ways honorable. Because not all the fighting is portrayed as a good thing.... I'm thinking out loud here.

Anyway, Mahoro is also stuck in this gendered role obviously, but I wonder how much self-delusion will play into it. She believed she needed to use her role as a cute girl to stop the fight, but all those attempts failed. Ultimately what worked was dropping the facade, dropping the role & those tactics, and standing up to fuckface (i do not care about this man I'm so sorry lol) as HERSELF. Saying what she really thought, how she really felt about these people and the whole situation. And basically willing to sacrifice her well-being to do so. Ooooh this is so interesting!!!!

I really can't wait to see where this goes, I know I keep saying that but. It's true. I mean, Matakara could be said to have some delusions about honor. Maybe the way he sees his brother is diluted. He believes in Arajin to a fault, but he was proven correct. Although it wasn't him that sparked the change. I dunno, a lot to think about.
