I am also having alternative thoughts of a different canon in which there is still a small shard of synergy crystal inside of May which has its moments of flare up but she's able to maintain control and Syn just "hey give up your mundane life, join my emo band" because he senses and he's like hmmm, what if you let the want for power take over you for once? Let loose of the control you so desperately try to hold onto, allow yourself to become unstoppable, because aren't you tired of fighting it? She even had to stole a fanart to enter a zine (which was cancelled, Thank G-d)! Poor baby.

Sorry to piggyback off of another anon, but I have a question. Why is fan-fiction the only medium that authors don’t interact with? I’ve seen authors or showrunners talk about purposely avoiding fan-fiction to not influence their ideas, but shouldn’t that also be the same for fanart? If someone draws a comic or something similar about your book or show and you see it, would that not also have an influence on you? Wouldn’t engaging in fan theory if you’re creating a series have an influence on you? Wouldn’t you want to avoid anything that might influence you, and have you accidentally stealing an idea? Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s an incredible opportunity for artists and I’m glad they’re getting their work recognized, but it kind of feels like writers are getting the shaft.

As for why authors/showrunners avoid fanfiction, I'd say the issue is money. If high-profile shows or book series are caught plagiarizing fanwriters--intentionally or not--that represents a lot of financial risk. Consumer disapproval that sways renewal/sequel deals (i.e. whether or not investors will want to take the risk putting money into something that viewers might boycott), reputation damage for publishing or production houses (how could they let blatant idea theft slide like that?? obviously consumers won't give their money to other projects associated with them), not to mention actual legal action (fanfiction is protected under copyright law, kind of, and I think fanwriters can sue for damages. I'm not sure).

I think on the other hand creators getting involved with fanart and theory allows them a little more wiggle room. If they end up lifting elements from a piece of fanart, they can claim it as an homage to the artist who created it, and that's good for the reputation of the given project--look at them, they love their fans so much! And in the case of theory, they can always just praise the fans for getting it right after the fact. Art and theory gives creators more plausible deniability. Although let me emphasize, that's just my theory.

What's ironic to me is that in the case of most big-budget franchises, everything is fanfiction anyway. The difference between fanfiction and official canon for long-established IPs is solely based on whether or not the copyright holder is paying for the new content. Like, who came up with Mandalorians? Who all is writing Mandalorian content with Disney's seal of approval? I guarantee you it's not the guy who came up with them anymore.

Can I asked for some writing/fan fiction advice 👉👈 So, I’m writing a fic, obviously, and I stumbled across a fan fiction with the exact same tropes and ship I was going for. And now I’m afraid people and/or the author might think I copied their idea. Although the plot is somewhat different but I’m still unsure if I should upload it or keep it to myself. :/

dear anon!! listen, tropes are gonna be repetitive. elements are gonna be repetitive. ships are gonna be repetitive. fandom has always been like this and it's okay! i mean, haven't we all started writing because of some fics that inspired us? afaik almost every fanwriter starts writing after having read fanfictions for a while. you can't really invent anything in fandom, and i think it's so cool when we like something so much we wanna replicate it in our own way

in your case, you shouldn't worry because you didn't even know about this pre-existent fic when your started writing yours. there won't be things that are exactly the same. it just means that the elements were so cool two people indipendently decided to write about them. also if you work on a fic there's gonna be your soul in it and no one can replicate it. you always bring something new to the table, even if you were to write the "same" fic that has been written again and again for ten years, because we're all different as humans and as writers

if you still aren't convinced, know that i personally wouldn't mind it if i saw a fic in the tag with the same elements i wrote in a fic of mine. even if i found "evidence" that the other fic was inspired by mine, i would feel flattered and even honored if anything

(Former Hetalia fanwriter anon) Okay so yeah, I do think it’d be genuinely horrifying and hilarious if you could find out who I am. It’s emotional whiplash because on one hand, those were the most popular works I’ve ever made, but on the other WHY are those my most popular??

I think I’m pretty safe from discovery, because yeah when you say ancient it’s Not Far Off. We’re talking 2014 Wattpad Era. I wrote two that are still up (God I hate them so much, but the one has over 80k reads and I’m too weak to delete it)

I feel like the only clue is that my blog name on here is actually a reference from that work (When you go by something for almost 10 years, it sticks) but I changed the name for my profile on Wattpad explicitly because I didn’t want it tied to me anymore.

The scariest thing is like, I was 14 when I wrote it. It’s a terrible diary disguised as a crackfic. You would know waaay more about me then anyone, much less than several thousand people should really know. It was the dumbest thing I’ve ever made.

But yeah. If you want to find out who I am, that’s really funny. But I don’t blame you if not.

I thought I'd try something a bit different for this.

While The Ruby Falls is sitting on a shelf for Dec, I know I'm going to go nuts if I don't write something. So I thought I'd list all the TESIV: Oblivion WIPs I have kicking around, and maybe someone can offer an opinion on which to work on next.

There are 19 of them, so I've popped them under the cut in order of oldest to most recent.

Not Alone

Rin needs to learn to rely on the Blades, Baurus, and Martin a bit more. This was supposed to be my contribution to the tiny collection of HoK/Martin/Baurus fics but I am a coward and stopped writing. I'm halfway through an estimated 30k fic. This thing has no plot, only problems.

My Blade for Thee, Your Son to Be

Rather than become a Sanguinite after leaving the Arcane University, Martin is instead made a Blade. ~3,500 words already in. Naively, the expected wordcount was 5k. I think it's going to end up closer to 10k though. Fun Fact - the Prisoner in this version was the genesis for Aderyn in MOAU.

Talis has petitioned the Fighters Guild to go harvest some mushrooms for a project. Rowan and Cygwen oblige. About halfway through a 7k fic.

Learning to Shoot

Modern AU. Baurus teaches Marti to shoot a pistol while Aderyn is off getting her ass kicked by Mythic Dawn Cultists. This is supposed to be a look at the growing attraction between CEO and Bodyguard but *cries in "can't write men, gay, or flirting"*. Expected wordcount ~5k

Inspired by a random post, this will be about what Cloud ruler temple thinks about the Oblivion MQ & its occupants. ~800 words. Not started, not sure who the HoK would be for this one.

MOAU. Baurus needs rescuing from a burning building. 79 words into a 500-word drabble.

MOAU. The Blades find a shampoo commercial Martin starred in during his Sanguin days. Inspired by the comments on someone's fanart that I didn't record Q.Q So I'll need to hunt it out to give proper credit. 150 words into ~800-word fic.

Aderyn is Martin's kid. I'm currently 14,055 words through this 1,000-word fic. It's nearly finished though, so maybe it'll be a nice round 15k? I just need to stop resisting writing the end.

I’m the anon who over analyzed Captive to hell and back with Birdies relationship with Killer and stuff among other things and I just want to bring up that one of the things I love about you as an author is how open and encouraging you are when it comes to discussing your stories with you. Sometimes I get anxious that I’m being annoying whenever I have so many questions and new scenarios I think of that I want to share but your responses always make me so happy and I get so giddy seeing other people’s questions and thoughts and interpretations!
