Some people have mixed feelings about Amazon, but I am one of those people that really likes Amazon. One reason is they pay musicians like me to perform live music for their employees. I also like that I can order whatever I want and not have to deal with being followed around a retail store by some ignorant person who thinks people with brown skin steal. Lol. If all the corporations in Seattle would support artists, we would not have to move out of Seattle. Culture attracts people! :) But here’s is something I learned.... “Houdini was the code name for Prime Now, which launched in December 2014, and—almost like magic—delivered customer orders in two hours or less. The building “Houdini” houses three eateries operated by the Seattle nonprofit organization FareStart, which helps people escape poverty by teaching them skills they need to succeed in the food service industry and in life. Incorporating two historic buildings in its design, "Houdini" features the original rooflines and ornamentation of the 1927 Troy Laundry Building and the 1938 Boren Investment Building, both of which have been declared Seattle landmarks.” That’s where we will be on 7/23/19 at 12 pm. That’s at 399 Fairview Ave N, Seattle, WA 98109. #amazon #amazonprime #corporationswhosupportartists #corporationsthatsupportculture #music #independentmusic #vocals #guitar #cultureattractspeople (at Amazon - Houdini) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz9bVQppi72/?igshid=ln4urctngnxy

25 Branding Pros to Follow on Instagram
Here at HOW, we talk quite a bit about how you can up your branding game. Sometimes we take a close look at emerging logo design trends so that you can determine whether they might be effective in your own work. Other times we study a particularly strong branding project to see what we can learn. And occasionally we consider what it would mean to take things to the next level—e.g., positioning yourself as a branding expert even if the thought terrifies you.
But we also have to wonder if something as simple as surrounding yourself (physically, digitally) with those who are killin’ it can help you up your own game. We like to think so. That’s why we’ve identified 25 design firms to follow on Instagram.
These firms have all been recognized in either the HOW Logo Design Awards or the HOW International Design Awards for their brand strategy and identity design skills, and we highly recommend following them for a regular dose of inspiration. (Hey, don’t forget to follow us too @howbrand!)
Related: Enter the HOW Logo Design Awards by Oct. 2 to take advantage of the early-bird rates. | The HOW International Design Awards closes on Sept. 11—you still have time to enter.

From Meal Kits to Grocery Stores, Amazon Aims to Feed America
Expanding on its AmazonFresh food delivery service and recent $13.7 billion Whole Foods Market retail acquisition in addition to its Amazon Go branded grocery stores, Amazon is expanding its food-related operations to launch ready-to-cook meal packages and delivery as it takes an even bigger bite out of the grocery business.
youtube
Now available in select markets, Amazon-branded meal kits (tagline: “We do the prep. You be the chef”) include raw ingredients to prepare meals including chicken tikka masala, falafel patties, salmon with soba noodles and tacos with pork that can be prepared in 30 minutes.
As USA Today notes, “Meal kits are a $2.2 billion industry (in the US), which is expected to grow 25-30% in the next five years, according to the Chicago-based food industry consulting firm Pentallect. Amazon’s entrance into the market sent shockwaves through the industry Monday, with shares of market leader Blue Apron tumbling roughly 11% on the news.”
The meal kits are already available to some customers of AmazonFresh with 17 different options like a Veggie Burger with Harissa Aioli to Steak Au Poivre with Parmesan Fries and all accompanied by the tagline “We do the prep. You be the chef.”
As for price, vegetarian options average $16 – or two for $20 – comparable to competitors Blue Apron and HelloFresh.
Since buying the organic grocer Whole Foods for $13.7 billion, Amazon has secured a beachhead in groceries and physical retail and will likely use Whole Foods’ more than 400+ locations as distribution centers for all their food services including meal kits.
“I’m not sure any of this will work, but that’s where they are headed,” said Michael Pachter, analyst at Wedbush Securities, to AP.
Amazon is also rolling out Amazon Pay Places, an extension of its mobile app, enabling customers to directly access third party services such as restaurants like T.G.I. Friday’s as it’s now doing.
#tech #news Amazon Pay Places lets… https://t.co/3zTmrgvtdp |Check out this cool video! https://t.co/7uQ3JYG1Sh @gamerretweeters @HyperRTs http://pic.twitter.com/qO3ut0JTkx
— eBargains Today (@eBargainsToday) July 19, 2017
At launch, Amazon is partnering with T.G.I. Friday’s customers in Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington D.C., Richmond, VA and Wilkes-Barre, PA.
“One of the things we’ve been doing the last couple of years is thinking about how to connect merchants with the Amazon customer base, knowing they are very active connected shoppers whether online or on mobile,” said Patrick Gauthier, VP Amazon Pay, to Pymnts.
“With what we are taking the lid off today — we are enabling merchants to instantly reach people who are highly mobile and very desirable as customers — without having to worry about app distribution.”
Gauthier noted that Amazon is not going into the order-ahead business and that Fridays has built the functionality they are managing.
“This is another example of how we are connecting the Amazon customer base to a third-party merchant and making it easier for them to transact by creating a framework that allows third party data and contacts to be passed into our app via an extension. It does not require merchants to build an app — it instead allows them to leverage the functionality they’ve built in a new way.”
For those less fortunate members of society who don’t know where their next meal is coming from, for whom AmazonFresh is beyond their grasp, Amazon is partnering with FareStart eateries to create jobs for those in need.

FareStart CEO Megan Karch graduated from the culinary training program, now in its 25th year. The nonprofit is dedicated to helping those who experiencing homelessness, in recovery, or those previously incarcerated to gain skills and employment in the food-service industry.
“I see students walk through our door with little sense of connection, little sense of hope, little sense of dignity, and to use their words, they come ‘broken,’” said Karch in a profile on Amazon’s blog.
“What I see when they graduate is a different person. I see them feel their own value. We use food as a tool for helping people see who they can be. We’re more than a restaurant. We’re more than a food business. We’re a life-changing business. FareStart is in the business of helping people change their life stories.”
In support of FareStart’s expanding services, Amazon will match all restaurant revenues and donations made to FareStart – up to $1 million – for the first 25 days of operation.
Jeff Wilke, Amazon CEO Worldwide Consumer, added, “I know that the work FareStart is doing is improving the ability of everybody who participates in the apprenticeship program to make a better life for themselves.”
Amazon has already donated more than 25,000 square feet of space within its headquarters buildings to FareStart. It just announced it’s opening a homeless transitional shelter inside one of its new Seattle headquarters buildings opening in 2020, to be run by Mary’s Place, a nonprofit that helps women and families who are experiencing homelessness.
Amazon donated space on its campus for Mary’s Place and announced matching grants of $1 million to Mary’s Place and $1 million for a Washington, D.C.-based organization called Friendship Place, providing emergency shelter for women and families, and services to help those in need find stable employment and permanent homes. And a fulfilling meal.

Protests Erupt Outside Seattle’s Caffé Vita Over Staff Firings, Unhoused Practices
On Wednesday, October 2nd, a walkout and protest was staged outside the Capitol Hill location of Seattle’s Caffé Vita arranged by a group known as Coffee Riot Seattle. Per a post on Instagram, the protest comes in response to the firing of Vita baristas for giving away pastries and coffee to unhoused individuals in the area.
According to the post, on September 5th, Vita co-owner Mike McConnell and the company’s general managers “fired a quarter of the baristas” at Vita’s iconic Capitol Hill location, “all of which come from marginalized backgrounds.” These individuals were fired, the post states, “because of the sudden harsh enforcement of a company policy that was not enforced or used historically.”
Per The Stranger, the next day an email was sent out to employees by now-former General Manger Isaiah Washington regarding the company’s policy:
We’ve recently learned that some employees have been giving away Vita gift cards, food, and coffee to homeless people in the neighborhoods we occupy.
Although these were well placed intentions, please understand, it is our belief that feeding homeless people without comprehensive services actually enables, increases and promotes homelessness. In order for us to do good things in the neighborhood, we must first have a successful business—giving away products is theft and the grounds for immediate employment termination. If our business is filled with homeless people many of our customers will likely choose alternatives, negatively impacting our livelihoods.
Citing four former Capitol Hill Vita employees, the Stranger’s article goes on to state that one of the baristas was let go for “giving out two free refill coffees.” Since then, “a total of 10 full-time employees have been fired or have quit for reasons related to that policy.” The four employees The Stranger spoke with also “deny giving away gift cards or hearing of anyone giving away gift cards.”
In response to the firings, Coffee Riot Seattle staged a demonstration outside the location in question, where protestors gave out fliers to passers by as well as leaving them on parked cars and put up larger posters around the neighborhood.
Caffé Vita co-owner Liz McConnell spoke with The Stranger about the incident. Per The Stranger:
McConnell said she believed the company had a pastry waste protocol, but she was “not sure” if any such protocol was listed in the employee handbook or elsewhere. She also didn’t know if the company had protocol for drip coffee destined for the drain.
When asked what evidence she uses to substantiate the belief that feeding homeless people enables homelessness, McConnell said “a belief isn’t saying anything that’s factual.”
When pressed on the issue, she told the story of a homeless person who, McConnell claimed, turned down a job offer at the cafe because “they said they preferred to stay on unemployment.” She added that providing “comprehensive solutions” was the most effective way to address homelessness and pointed to her support of nonprofits such as FareStart and Mary’s Place.
We have reached out to both Caffé Vita and Coffee Riot Seattle and will update this post as more information becomes available.
