Fay's Fic Rec Friday #1

Hello folks! I feel like there aren’t enough opportunities out there for us to celebrate other people’s fics in this fandom, so I thought I’d start up a little South Park-specific ‘Fic Rec Friday’ type of thing, where we can share some wonderful stories with each other. Idk if anyone else is interested in doing this too, I’m honestly just happy rambling to myself every week if that’s what it turns out to be hehe >:]

For the first SP Fic Rec Friday, the prompt is: which fic you could reread a thousand times over, and never get bored of?

For me, that would be "Flipside" by Hollycomb. This is a Stan/Kyle (with background Butters/Kenny) that follows evil Kyle from Spookyfish accidentally swapping places with the not-so-evil Kyle from regular ol' South Park. Needless to say, shenanigans ensue >:)

I first read this story about 6 months into my time in this fandom, and it fundamentally altered my brain chemistry 🥴 I’m a sucker for some sci-fi, so a reality swap AU is perfectly suited for my taste :D The high stakes, the political tension, the identity mix-up, the sweet, sweet dramatic irony, everything about the story makes me lose my bloody mind. I could read this fic every day for the rest of my life, and it would stay just as thrilling with each reread.

Hi Fay! I know it's no longer Friday, but if you'd be so kind, I'd love to know more about your fic writing history. What prompted you to write fanfic? Was there a certain pairing or canon that you just needed to know more about? Were you a lurker before you started writing, or did you jump in feet first? Was HP/Drarry your first fandom? Hey Sara! Thank you so much for the ask! 💜

I was definitely a lurker! I’ve always been into HP, but I only dove into the fandom side of HP when I was 15 and began reading drarry. I created a Tumblr account that I would never post to, and I’d spend hours every night scrolling through the drarry fic recs tag!

Although I initially began my descent into fandom hell through drarry, I became really invested in wolfstar in around 2016. Young Remus reminded me a lot of myself at the time - a chronically ill teen who spent an alarming amount of time in the hospital. I think Remus brought me a lot of comfort, and in ways it felt as though I wasn’t alone. 

I wrote fanfiction for the first time in April of 2019. I don’t remember why I felt compelled to write, but I’m so glad I did! I spent the summer of 2019 writing and then took a break through new years of 2020, which is when I consider to be the real start of my writing hobby! 

As far as other fandoms go, it’s really only ever been HP! Although I have gotten into The Umbrella Academy and will occasionally read fics from there!

Fay's Fic Rec Friday #3!

✨This week’s prompt is: Share a fic that could help someone get out of a reading slump! ✨

This is definitely not my cheeky way of trying to get out of my own reading slump that I’m in right now, no siree ;)

For this prompt, I’ll put forward the fic that got me out of my last slump, “✓✓ Read” by Boyue. This is a Stan/Kyle slice of life chatfic with a healthy helping of angst!

@cool-island-songs recommended it on a server wayyy back in October of last year (wasn’t even in conversation with me, I was just eavesdropping and yoinked the link >:) and I still haven’t stopped thinking about it since then. The brilliant, witty dialogue lends itself perfectly to the medium, making it so fun and easy to read. I hadn’t managed to bring myself to finish a fic in weeks, but it sucked me in so fast that I devoured it in just a few days. For anyone who’s also struggling to actually get into fics at the moment, I’d highly recommend this one! Just start skimming the first chapter, and you’ll know right away if you’ll be hooked or not :D

Fay's Fic Rec Friday #2

It was so lovely to see the positive response to last week’s prompt both here and on Twitter! I’ve now created an AO3 Collection where I’ll be bookmarking every fic rec’d by you guys, so that it’ll be super easy for you to filter and peruse it when you’re next looking for something new to read! Anyway, here we are, back for round two B)

This week’s prompt is: Share an ancient and sacred text from the fandom's early era. (AKA, a fave fic published before 2015!)

For me, I’ll nominate Fell In Love With A Dead Boy by Spirograph, from all the way back in Ye Olde 2006. This is a K2 fic told in a series of 20 vignettes, centred around Kenny’s experiences with death and immortality. It's so damn beautiful, you guys T-T I reread it just now and oh my gosh, the ending will never fail to make my heart swell up with joy. It’s gentle and slow paced, and carries that sweet, heady sense of nostalgia that that certain special kind of South Park fic embodies. I'm sure someone recommended this fic to me last summer when I was on a K2 binge, but I cannot for the life of me recall who, and it’s driving me a bit mad. Whoever you are, I am eternally indebted to you <3

Fay's Fic Rec Friday #5!

This week’s prompt is: ✨Share a fic that gives off summertime vibes!✨

I don’t know about you guys, but where I live, it’s getting hotter by the day! It’s got me in the mood for some sunshiney fics ^-^

For this prompt, I’ll recommend the 4k oneshot Friends t̶o̶ and Lovers by Green_Evening. I actually only found this fic this afternoon, but I’m already head over heels in love with it. It captures that sweet, heady feeling of summer in such a perfect way. This fic follows Stan play-acting at being a weed smoking girlfriend to teach Kyle how to be a good boyfriend to his future partners. And what fake-dating would be complete without a little crossdressing and practice kissing? The plot is silly and you can really tell that the author had fun with it, but at the same time, it has a subtle poignance to it too. I’ll share my favourite line, from their first kiss:

It only lasts a second but it feels intrinsically right, the way Kyle’s parted lips feel against his. Their front teeth bump with a soundless click and the taste is like nothing; not nothing as in void, but nothing as in the smell of home so familiar it’s unrecognizable.

God fucking damn you guys!!! I was not expecting to get stabbed in the gut by such beautiful, rich prose in a South Park yaoi. I could honestly sit here and quote the entire fic back to you, because there are so many gorgeous lines like this, but I’ll let you discover the rest of it for yourself :]

For this prompt, I’ll nominate Advil and Apple Juice by Kuchi! This is a 6k oneshot featuring a series of vignettes about Stan and Kyle looking after one another over the years. I’m such a sucker for a sickfic (as anyone familiar with my fics may have noticed hehe) and this one is just so sweet you guys. Idk what it is about expressing love through caretaking but waaaghhh!! Can I recommend more than one fic per prompt?

Absolutely! The more the merrier :)

Can I respond to prompts from previous weeks?

Yes! There are no expiry dates for any of the posts - all prompts are indefinitely open.

Does the prompt have to apply to the whole fic, or could it just be relevant to a certain chapter/scene?

If you associate the prompt with the fic, then that’s all that matters.

Does the fic I recommend have to be on AO3?

So long as it’s publicly accessible, the fic can be posted anywhere! At present I’m only able to put our AO3 Recs into the collection, but I’m looking into ways to compile fic recs from other websites as well.

Can I suggest prompts?

If you have any ideas for future prompts, you’re welcome to send ‘em my way! I try to make them relatively broad so that it’ll be easiest for other people to think of fics which fit in that category.
