can i ask your personal thoughts on whatever is going on with OTW? you've always had fandom thoughts that i respected. as an ao3 volunteer of five+ years, i know for a fact that at least some of what's being spread around in the big info posts is false. and given that, and that fact that it comes from FFA, it's hard for me to trust the motives behind any of it.

it feels like we've always said, the code is publically available and if you don't like AO3 you can make your own site. and this time, the response is "for 10 bucks a vote? nah, we'll just take yours"

it just feels like the bad actors who have always been around have figured out the language that gets some very reactionary people on board, and everyone else goes along with it because if you don't agree 100% then you must be racist.

The membership support is NOT vote-buying. There’s no way to verify how someone votes. (There’s no way to verify that someone votes; getting the membership doesn’t guarantee they’ll use it to vote.) (Although it’d be silly not to, if you’re not getting a tax break from the donation - membership doesn’t get you anything else.)

The people behind the “we’ll buy you a membership” push - I think Petra was first but several more people have jumped in with money - are mostly long-time supporters of the OTW. Many of them are people who were around at the start, and this is their way of saying “we want to fix the OTW, not burn it down.”

Part of the problem is that fandom-at-large is oblivious to the OTW as “a pack of fannish volunteers who are working on their fun fannish project together.” Getting more people memberships, getting them invested in who’s running for the board and what changes happen over time, is a way to help with that.

Also. There is absolutely no way to buy a hostile takeover of the OTW. None. Someone can buy all the memberships they want - make fake accounts and buy them memberships, buy ten thousand of them - and they’re still stuck with “these are the 6 people running for the Board; pick 4 of them. The Board will be a total of 7 people, and they will shape-but-not-control the future actions of the OTW.”

The OTW was built with “hostile takeover by fanatic evangelicals” in mind. That’s why Board candidates have to be active volunteers who’ve been involved for at least a year. You can’t buy your way onto a volunteer committee.

I think the EOR campaign has some good intentions, and calls out some real problems, and is also tangled up with fandom drama that isn’t going anywhere. And that a lot of the racism problems at AO3 would be best dealt with by fixing the administrative and communication problems, and/or better curation tools for the archive - and that none of those is going to look like “fixes for racism.”

Regarding “what’s really going on” -  as a volunteer, there are limits to what I am willing to talk about in public, but I��ve liked some of the discussions on the inside. People are asking, “Hey Board, wtf?” and “Hey Legal, wtf?” And they’re able to shape their questions with an understanding of the internal processes. A lot of the public questions, the answer winds up being “um, no, it just doesn’t work that way. At all.”

(Insert cracked laughter at the idea of the Legal team stepping down and the OTW hiring lawyers to replace them.)

Of course, both the Board and Legal know damn well every answer they give is going to immediately be screencapped and leaked, so they are, sigh, just as careful talking on the inside as in their public announcements.

CHARACTER INTRO: JOHN THOMPSONS

John Thompsons is notorious among the population of the Commonwealth for two things: his contributions to society's understanding of nuclear physics, and the fact that he shoved his way to the front of the line to be the first to sign the king's death warrant after the republican military coup which started the Civil War. Today he lives under house arrest in the palace, imprisoned by the monarchy which took over again after the war ended, unable to leave without permission, kept alive mostly for his intimate knowledge of the complex ancient technology which keeps the palace running. But of course he schemes for more. Wouldn't you?

Country of origin: Conriston, a northern member of the Commonwealth loosely based on a combination of eighteenth century Scotland and Puritan Massachusetts

Religion: Hugoist, meaning an adherent of a semi-illegal religious sect started in the year 650 AH by a man called Oliver Hugo. While the Commonwealth's official religion, called Puritanism, argues that the prophet recognised as a god by the powerful Marian Church (which dominates many of the Commonwealth's rivals) was not divine but merely a great human teacher, Hugoism goes a step further and identifies this prophet as an antichrist-like figure of evil who one must constantly guard against the doctrines of with constant prayer, tight-knit communities, persecuting Marians and Puritans, starting decades long civil wars with the aim of killing every heretic within the Commonwealth for good, and so on.

Occupation: pamphleteer, engineer, regicide

Location: unwillingly, the royal court of His Most Godly Majesty King Charles James IV of the Commonwealth of Harnsey and Conriston, Lord of Hieburne, and Defender of the Faith

Personality: notably deeply unpleasant and argumentative. Thompsons never let someone being his nominal friend get in the way of ruining their entire week just because he was in a bad mood when they drank the last energy drink and as a result of spending his entire life since the end of the Civil War (~5 years before the story starts) with the threat of execution hanging over his head he fears neither death nor man, with disastrous results for nearly every single other member of the royal court. At least he seems ruthlessly devoted to his beliefs -- but of course, given their nature, this too could have similarly negative effects for the aristocracy everywhere.

Some info on how Real History influenced his character under the cut

Obviously most prominently he's this universe's equivalent of one of the regicides of Charles I. His role in the Civil War was closer however to that of the Levellers -- he's like a cross between John Lilburne in that he got his foot in the door of politics when he intentionally got himself arrested for distributing outlawed pamphlets + Richard Overton in that his favourite thing ever in the world is writing mean pamphlets AND ALSO not a chance in hell did he ever get anywhere near a battlefield. He wasn't close friends with the Cromwell/Fairfax/Ireton/any other people like that equivalents but he looooves to pretend like he was and who's going to contradict him?

Secondly his role in the story is kind of like... a slightly mangled combination of Titus Oates and Israel Tonge. Like both of them he's kind of disturbingly anti-Catholic Church equivalent but he didn't get ordained as a priest to infiltrate the jesuits like Oates did in real life and, tbh, he's quite a bit more clever with his scheming than Oates was. Additionally, he kickstarts the plot when he accuses Talbott of murdering the king's advisor Lord Ewan for the Marian church (Lord Ewan having really taken an unfortunate but ultimately accidental tumble down the stairs while both of them were drunk) much like Oates and Tonge fabricated the Popish Plot in real life, but in FFAS 1. it's just him; 2. he directly accuses the rough Tyrconnell equivalent + sends him to prison for a month rather than accusing just a bunch of random people and indirectly kind of harming Tyrconnell as in real life; & 3. due to the compression of events in the story this directly leads to everything else that happens within a few months, when the Popish Plot happened nearly a decade before William III was even asked to come over to England. Additionally, no matter what other courtiers may think, he's 100% mentally sound, if unpredictable, and fully understands the implications of what he's doing. Whether or not this is true of Oates and Tonge is... disputed. Also Oates and Tonge were not, that I know of, Levellers who were personal acquaintances of Oliver Cromwell. They weren't threatening enough so I gave them an upgrade etc

okay this is genuinely such a funny thing to think about bcos this forces me to consider powerscaling the way people do for character v character on twitter.

this got long so i'm putting it under a read more.

oc primer:

sophie - former foundation mobile task force agent, now an scp object. is a witch and is proficient in sarkic necromancy/carnomancy, though her main discipline is logomancy. [ scp foundation ]

satomi - jujutsu sorcerer skilled in the seance technique using her own blood as a medium. not proficient in close combat. [ jujutsu kaisen ]

chiyo - tokubetsu jonin skilled in fuinjutsu (sealing techniques) as well as suiton (water release). [ naruto ]

diane - undead priestess of the holy light. has zombie strength. [ warcraft ]

erick - undead arms warrior. has zombie strength. [ warcraft ]

ardelle - blood elf priestess of the sun and eclipse (disc priest). not proficient in close combat. wishes she could just be an archeologist real bad. [ warcraft ]

mallory - troll demo/afflic warlock. not proficient in close combat. scythe is mostly for show. [ warcraft ]

like if its RAW power/strength? it's sophie without question. she has a dragon. anyone stupid enough not to surrender to her immediately gets killed by her giant undead boyfriend-dragon.

now if i tried to even the playing field, i could take john away and make her fight PURELY with her MTF training and her magic, which could probably put her on equal footing with my other characters like chiyo, diane, ardelle, mallory and satomi. erick too probably it's just he doesn't have magic/doesn't use magic so he's probably at a slight disadvantage. then i'd say it's anyone's game. satomi has not mastered domain expansion and even if she did use her domain, her technique would burn out and leave her vulnerable to other opponents in the arena she hasn't defeated. ardelle, diane and chiyo have the advantage of being able to heal themselves, but ardelle cannot fight someone up close. personally i wouldn't recommend getting into a fist fight with diane. mallory as a demo/afflic lock has the advantage of numbers but without her demons if you manage to get up close to her she will be pretty easy to defeat. erick is quite literally an average guy with an axe fueled by unholy rage. chiyo would be able to hold her ground against someone like ardelle and mallory but sophie, diane and satomi might give her a run for her money. if mallory and erick form a temporary alliance there is a good chance they could wreak major havoc just bcos they work insanely wall together.

if i let my favoritism show it'd probably end up being sophie or diane.

if violence wasn't allowed at all? ardelle. she would info-dump everyone to death.

so, little info about me: I LOVE agriculture stuff. So much, that I joined the future farmers of america (FFA) program in highschool. I ALSO like playing harvest moon. In revisiting my Harvest moon animal parade brain worms, I have unintentionally made myself very angy.

Why?

Because during the animal festival the livestock contest has everyone competing with the livestock of their choice. The thing is, it can be ANY livestock animal. Chickens compared to horses, cows compared to ducks, SHEEP COMPARED TO OSTRICHES! and if you still don't see the problem to comparing metaphorical apples to metaphorical oranges, here's the kicker: in actual Livestock contests with official judges EVERY ANIMAL GETS THEIR OWN GROUP TO BE COMPARED TO so you aren't looking at a chicken and trying see if it's better than a draft horse.

the only reason I am not violently livid is because it's not based on anatomy or quality products, the person with better friendship levels with their livestock wins.

Laugh at my misery all you want, I'm just voicing my angry thoughts here, but as someone who had to learn and memorize the anatomy of horses for competitions, and chickens, cows, ducks, sheep, etc. for classes I AM SO MAD THAT THERE'S NO GOOD BASIS ON HOW THESE ANIMALS ARE JUDGED. THERE'S NO REWARD FOR GOOD BREEDING PRACTICES. AND IT'S POINTLESS ANGER!

on a game design level for what harvest moon is basing the contests on how well you've befriended you animals is fine because not everyone is looking for a highly competitive and mostly accurate scoring system, and if they did separate the competition into several classes for the different animals I can also see it getting out of hand with rewards for entering multiple animals and placing well. I see the reasons why they did things the way they did.

but now that I've been voicing all of this out, I kinda want a game where the focus is raising animals an crops in similar specs to how the real world does, like how sakuna of rice and ruin did with rice.

I’ve also done photo comparison compilations with the tag #comparison. It’s not that I have a big thing for watching people gain weight (although I don’t hate it either!). It’s just pictures are so two-dimensional and the before pictures help put the after pictures in perspective.

I thought I was just an FA/BBW-lover for a long time. But I’m discovering I also love feedee fantasies and I want to try being fed.

okay so i read the article and it implies that the fair doesnt have a pull out period which is Insane To Me. so the thing is that each county fair is a private event full stop. each one has their own bylaws (as does each individual 4H club but thats irrelevant here). 4H and FFA are just participants in a private event that they arent technically involved in. in actuality the people on the board for the fair are almost all a part of local 4H or FFA clubs.

basically what im looping around to is that each club and fair are very individualistic and no two are completely the same, but they all run the same format. i dont know the rules for shasta county's fair but MY fair specifically allows you to participate in both market and showmanship events without the need to actually sell your animal. it's highly encouraged, but not at all an actual requirement. kids are kids after all. idk man either the fair didnt have the option to take the animal home or the parent didnt take it and then took matters into her own hands after the fact which are both bad but im just baffled over how every single decision made in this story was a bad one from start to finish.

like the la times article specifically i feel is missing info and is sensationalized somewhat. dont get me wrong, the end result is awful and it shouldve never gotten to that point, but until more info is released im sticking with my judgement that both sides messed up just the fair messed up significantly more
