Au Ra August 2024: Day 6 - Fluffy
"…You're lucky your down is so soft, you big pest."
Arashi's hunting hawk found her during her initial visit to the Diadem and has, more or less, refused to leave her side since. Arashi claims it's because her shoulders make a good perch, but she feeds it whatever scraps of meat she has on hand when she thinks nobody's looking.

thinking about how steph invented machinistry and how it seems like ishgard doesn't have ceruleum heaters. i know they probably just have fireplaces but my mind has invented a narriative connecting those two points
imagine you are stephanivien de haillenarte, 26, and the world as you know it just fucking froze over. there's a lot of people scrambling to fix a lot of things, and you have identified a problem: heating
most houses in ishgard have fireplaces, they have winters of course, but the houses aren't completely prepared to keep people safe from the cold, and that's fully ignoring all the people who don't have fireplaces or don't even have a place to live. there's also concerns about how long the wood barely stockpiled this time of year will last, and the risk of the dravanians attacking ishgard while it's vulnerable, especially when the sky is not clear with the amount of smoke generated keeping people alive. you are good at finding problems and trying to fix them. you have a lot of steel and a whole workshop at your disposal.
what if you could make some kind of machine that eminated heat without generating smoke. a box people could keep around that would do the work of a hard to manage fireplace. the first thing you think of is something that uses combusting aether in a controlled environment
the aether heater is great and works perfectly in a time ishgard really neads it, and skysteel starts constructing a ton of them as fast as possible
then, maybe a year later, when things are calmer but still very cold, you have an idea that could be a huge innovation on your previous invention:
what if you could make a portable aether heater. you start on scematics immediately, working out how small it could feasibly be, how cheaply it could be made to help the most people, you prepare to test it yourself-
and you learn the hard way that condensing a complex reaction like that without really considering safety concerns leads to powerful explosions. ow.
BUT every failure is a lesson you can use to further innovate! and it occurs to you that maybe people would WANT a dangerous combustion machine on their hips and it could be safer if the excess heat could be redirected through a barrel of some sort, you see where i am going with this,
and boom! you have invented machinistry and now you have an aether combuster on your hip and a gun in your other hand. and one day one of your pupils will save the universe and also invent a biochemical weapon and a giant robot wife that will beat you up. and one day you will work on fixing ceruleum heaters and they will work (and accidentally be so so so explosive)
