FFXIVWrite 2024- Candle Masterpost

*Heavy breathing* I will do it. This is the first I'm participating. Hi I'm Candle a gpose fic writer, and English is not my native language. Crepuscule a Wol & OT3 gpose fic started in 2022 is my long and current writing project.

Today I want to give myself the opportunity to express myself in a different way, to get out of my comfort zone and let my words flow. So here i am.

FFXIVWrite 2024 Day 1

Cross carefully sat in her chocobo’s saddle and held the reins in both hands. The leather felt new with how stiff it was.

The red-haired miqo’te’s tail flicked and twitched as she tried not to squeeze the bird’s sides too tightly. It didn’t stop the bird’s shifting from one foot to another.

“Ever ride a chocobo before?” asked the chocobo handler politely.

They were in a corral behind the Twin Adders’ headquarters in Gridania, where they stored their company chocobos when soldiers were in town. It was also where they brought in new chocobos from Bentbranch meadows, when they were trained enough to be ready to be given to adventurers or new recruits.

The wide area of tamped earth, surrounded by the stables on all sides, also made for a good place to give new adventurers a chance to get used to how their new mounts moved.

“Not really.” Cross gave the chocobo-masked man a nervous look. “I’ve been around them, but my mother never let me learn how to ride.”

A faint memory came and went at the back of her mind, blotted with bright light around a figure within.

“I believe my father might have given me a ride on his, once, but I can barely remember that.”

“Too young?” the handler guessed. Then he saw the look on Cross’ face and winced. “Ah…my apologies.”

Cross shook her head. “You didn’t know.” She looked down at the reins in her hands, then back at the handler. “So, how do I direct Cloudstreak to go where I need him to?”

“Kweh?” The chocobo shook his head and looked back at her. He’d picked up on his new name fast.

“Well, kicking your heels into his sides will send him running, but if you want him to stop, you need to pull on the reins and lean back a little.” The handler mimed leaning back, holding up his hands like he was pulling on invisible reins himself. “You need to lean with him and pull the reins to steer him in the direction you want him to go, as well. But don’t push him too hard — a worn-out chocobo won’t get you where you need to go.”

“Right.” Cross nodded. She adjusted how she was sitting on the saddle, pulling her tail around her in a tight coil. Cloudstreak did his best to adjust as she moved, shifting his feet to keep them from falling over. “Let’s give this a try, then. Ready, Cloudstreak?”

“Kweh!” The chocobo gave a cheery chirp and looked ahead.

“All right. Let’s go!” Cross tapped Cloudstreak’s sides with her heels.

The tumble off his back as the chocobo took off running was not something she was prepared for.

“Ho!” The handler quickly got Cloudstreak’s attention as the bird tried to take off running. He moved to Cross’ side and held out a hand. “You all right?”

“Yes, that just startled me.” Cross accepted his open hand, and let the handler pull her to her feet. She used her other hand to rearrange her robes and make sure her thaumaturgy staff hadn’t been thrown off. “I didn’t think he would start quite that fast!”

“I think your tone of voice made him think you were ready to run,” the handler said. He turned his head to look at the chocobo as Cloudstreak came to a stop next to them. “Take it slow, now. She’s not an expert like the people you’re used to working with.”

“Kweh.”

Cross couldn’t tell if Cloudstreak was taking that to heart, or if he was planning on doing that again.  Either way, he was her bird now, and she needed to learn how to ride.

Cross marched up to the chocobo and pulled herself back into the saddle. That part was getting easy, at least.

Then she took up the reins in her hands again, and pulled herself forward a little more on the saddle. “Let’s try this again, shall we?”

“Kweh.” Cloudstreak shook out his feathers underneath her. He looked back at her, and Cross almost thought the bird looked…curious, perhaps?

She hoped she would be able to read him well soon.

“Slowly,” Cross said, giving him a little nod. Then she flicked the reins a little, and dug in her heels.

FFXIVWrite 2024 #30: Two Heads are Better than One

(A/n: A bit of a more lowkey finish for the month after the rush to do role quest rewrites, and having the AU as a piece on the side to relax with. This isn't even really the end of the plans I had for the AU and both this and the role quest rewrites would need so much extra editing and extra chapter.

But that can wait after a rest cos I definitely felt like I was hitting The Wall as the end of the month appraoched. Urianger's dialogue is a bit sloppy here so definitely might need to tighened that up in edits but yeah, I wanted to finish this. And at least for the role quests rewrites, I achieved my one goal of seeing at least one of the quest lines finished, and the others have some bones to work with and flesh out.

Month is done! I need to make the masterpost.

And before I forget, tho it might not be that important - prompt idea is based off teamwork and people being stronger together. Could've used it for a role quest rewrite, but having the AU to be my final relaxing finisher is nice in a way.

According to Minfilia’s plan at least, it was the final stop before the inn for an evening with everyone gathered, including those apparently off the beaten path and normally residing outside of town. It left Fhara feeling a touch more nervous to meet them, hoping she’d get the chance to explore the outskirts properly tomorrow.

Minfilia pushed on the door with her shoulder and immediately grabbed the attentions of the two inside - a miqo’te woman sitting at the main desk, and an elezen man standing beside her, both perusing a book together.

“Minfilia, to what do we owe the pleasure?” the woman greeted, her head perched on bridged fingers and her tail lazily swaying behind her.

“Introductions,” Minfilia simply said, smiling as she presented Fhara, who’s ears pinned back under the scrutiny.

“I presume you aren’t asking for a medical for her while she’s here?” the woman then asked with a coy smile.

“It may be needed at some point, since this is our new farmer, but I’m sure you can book it for another time. This is Fhara. Fhara, as you already heard while we were with Yda and Lyse, this is Y’shtola, our town doctor, and Urianger, our librarian, though he’s equally capable as a medical personnel.”

Both had offered a nod and a small bow respectively at their mention, with Urianger picking up the book they’d been reading.

“Lady Y’shtola oft seeks my counsel on matters as well as the necessary reading material. Though I lack the training and the certification, mine own skills suffice when paired with the lady’s guidance,” he said in response, his odd cadence and vocabulary already making Fhara’s ears perk up. Y’shtola herself simply tutted.

“He’s rather the modest type. But I can assure you, he’s more than effective if you need the assistance, especially in an emergency. You may need to rely on him if I’m called away to assist in another town,” she said, though her final comment made her frown and sigh.

“Though, as I’m sure you’ve been hearing all day now, that isn’t easy at the moment. I’ve received enough letters asking for my aid for those affected by the earthquake, but travel is difficult and long given the paths I’d have to take. We’ve been discussing my options and whether I should go and what I would have to take while doing so. And it would leave Urianger in charge here if I did.”

“A small boon then that we have someone with such knowledge to take your place then. We’re rather fortunate in that regard, though your absence would still be felt,” Minfilia commiserated, “Have you decided when you would leave yet or are you still thinking about it?”

“Still thinking,” she responded, ear flicking. The talk of the roads had brought a worried frown to Urianger’s brow as well.

“Traversing the roads is proving difficult for all these days, both for the delivery of supplies, and for individuals alone. Mine own companion departed to provide resources elsewhere and has been hinder in her return.”

Fhara’s ear perked up again, glancing over at Minfilia, already sharing a look with Y’shtola. Seeing Fhara’s curious expression, she covered her mouth from Urianger’s view - as much as he wasn’t paying her any direct attention - and mouthed, “His girlfriend.”

Then out loud, “Moenbryda also works at the library. She’s more likely of the two to go out and fetch them fresh books for their stores. She was never one to wait for deliveries, but it also meant their collection is usually one of the more up to date in the valley. People put in requests to borrow books all the time so she would also deliver them. It’s been some time since she left then?”

“She did send a letter from her destination before the earthquake, then another after to say she was in good health and trying to return. But that was last week and she’s still not here, so she may be caught up in all the paperwork and checkpoints most likely, knowing how far off she had to travel in the first place,” Y’shtola replied. She gave Urianger a reassuring smile, a flick of her tail on his leg to get his attention from his worried thoughts.

“She’ll be fine, I’m sure of it. And giving everyone hell as she’s wont to do along the way. She’ll be back home in no time,” she said.

While he could only mumble a small agreement, trying to hide his concern, Y’shtola stood and offered a similar bemused look to Fhara, saying, “It may be some time till you can meet her, but I do hope you like her once you can. She’s always the type to leave a big impression. But don’t think her fiery personality makes her ill suited for her job - she’s an excellent scholar, more than Urianger’s equal. But they’re a good team together.” Her final comment was said with a glance at the man in question, who’s worry had finally dissipated into a look of pride, though whether it was for himself or his co-worker, Fhara wasn’t sure.

“As are you two, even in Urianger’s unofficial capacity as a caregiver,” Minfilia smiled, “And I’m sure you’ve seen in our other visits, everyone’s pulling their weight in their own jobs to make the town function. We may be struggling at the moment with the incident, but we’re managing.” Fhara nodded, smiling despite the building pressure on her shoulders.

“Yes, I can see that. Everyone’s doing so much for the community, I’ll try my best to contribute,” she said with a bow.

“I’ve no doubt you will. And everyone is more than happy to help you settle in and feel welcome,” Minfilia nodded.

Behind them, Y’shtola chanced a look at the clock on the wall, then motioned for Urianger to follow as she walked around the desk, pausing by the two women.

“If we’re not doing that medical today, then I’ll be closing up and heading for the inn. Always good to get a seat early before the crowd comes. Will you two be joining us, or did you have anywhere else to visit?”

“Oh it is getting rather late, the time has flown today” Minfilia mumbled, looking both at the clock and out the window where the sun was getting low, and a faint purple hue was tinting the sky and the growing shadows.

“I suppose we should, but part of me wants to show Fhara a few more spots in town. Perhaps my office and where the major roads would lead if she wishes to explore on her own,” she said, somewhat sheepishly shuffling.

“Keeping her all to yourself a touch longer?” Y’shtola said, a slight purr rumbling in her words and her tail curling.

“Hardly! I mean-” Minfilia huffed, biting her lip and looking a bit flushed under the other woman’s light tease. She turned to Fhara, trying to straighten up.

“It’s up to you of course. I’ve shown you our main facilities here in town, so we could move on and I’ll let you find everything else on your own,” she offered. Once again, all eyes were on Fhara.

The thought of getting to see the bustling town having fun together was appealing, but knowing she was the new kid in town and would be on the spot even more so than these small scale introductions had been didn’t sound appealing. Especially with new faces she hadn’t even met yet, as Minfilia kept saying. Having a little more time away from all the bustle would be nice…

“It’d be nice to see a little more of the town before the big meet up,” she replied, looking eagerly at Minfilia. It was also just nice to spend a bit more time with her host before they’d eventually have to go back to their duties the next day.

“Then we shall leave you to it,” Y’shtola nodded, looking thoroughly unsurprised at the decision by her curved lips, “But don’t be too late, I do think Fhara would like to talk with people before they get too far into their cups.”

The group as a whole exited the clinic, with Urianger and Y’shtola departing after locking up the door. Leaving Minfilia and Fhara underneath a quickly darkening sky.

“So,” Fhara started carefully, rocking back on her feet, “where to now?” Despite the rough plan Minfilia had come up with on the spot in the clinic, now she shrugged and offered a casual smile. They’d already fallen in step together in the opposite direction from where the others had headed.

“Let’s see where we end up, shall we?”

Yes, that's right -- I'm doing this on top of all my other on-going writing nonsense!

My current three projects -- Distant Cousins, Warrior Returned, and Cross Sylvan's Chronicles -- won't be put on hold during the month of September, but any writing I do for them will be secondary to these prompts. I'm not sure yet when I'm going to be posting these to AO3, but you can be certain they'll make their way there eventually! Maybe after some editing, at least...although there is a chance they could end up in one of my current/ongoing projects as well. Will have to wait and see.
