Hearts and Minds
Mitsukiki Week 2023 Playlist for Day 3: Longing by @mitsukiki-festival
Tumblr media
This one started out as Mitsuhid-ace playlist but then I used the day’s prompt and “Head vs. Heart” themed songs to find lyrics that fit from Kiki’s point of view too. Both Mitsuhide and Kiki work through their feelings for each other throughout (with plenty of waiting...), but it all works out for the best as they remain friends and knight partners.
Hearts and Minds
Tried To Fall In Love (My Head Got In The Way)- Kevin Devine Friend Hospital- Nada Surf Capital Karma- Manchester Orchestra Art Talk- Fialta For Me This Is Heaven- Jimmy Eat World No One Says You Have To- Kevin Devine
Summary lyrics are cited after the cut:
Tried To Fall In Love (My Head Got In The Way)- Kevin Devine
Tried to watch the band but my head got in the way
Who was the stranger Moving around inside my life? Could he account for The blankness that blanketed my eyes?
What was the answer? Where was the pin to pick the lock? Why was I waiting? When would I finally wake up?
I tried to fall in love but I couldn’t get past my pain I tried to fall in love but my head got in the way
Friend Hospital- Nada Surf
We are traveling daily by the hour Moods clouding mountains ideas like towers Choosing sides, digging in, then changing Hearts and minds are chafing from all the rearranging
So much better that we're not together Cause I will not lose you Or be the blues to you Friend hospital Wild sadness knew weakness
Capital Karma- Manchester Orchestra
I defended your drama I'm a heart, you're a brain All I wanna do is wait for you
Now you're craving your karma Where'd it go? And what'd it say?
Am I losing my patience? I feel it I'm afraid that you know, you can see it Let me stand by the door, let me breathe in I forgave myself, so forgive yourself
I'm not trying to stand in the way I'm in love with whoever you are Nothing here is gonna take that away It is you and it's been from the start
Art Talk- Fialta
Two kids, stuck in this city Blonde hair always stuck in our eyes
Try as we might, we could not predict the outcome Though we tried Plotting is a gift we both deny
We stood in line still both of us pretending And we left confused at why they changed the ending But I guess it’s fair
And then one day, you said that you were leaving And you said to wait, I waited for a season But you never came, I guess it’s fair
For Me This Is Heaven- Jimmy Eat World
The first star I see may not be a star We can't do a thing but wait So let's wait for one more
And the time's such clumsy time In deciding if it's time I'm careful but not sure how it goes You can lose yourself in your courage
When the time we have now ends When the big hand goes round again Can you still feel the butterflies? Can you still hear the last goodnight?
And the mindless comfort grows When I'm alone with my big plans And this is what she said gets her through it If I don't let myself be happy now, then when?
No One Says You Have To- Kevin Devine
It gets so lonely inside my mind I'm surrounded in love all the time I get stuck in simple phrases Complicate straight lines If there's a knot that don't need tying It gets distorted inside my mind Isolation, disconnection Another person's life
I say, "I can't race forever. Can't raise the rock so high." She says, "No one says you have to. Let go and take your time."

Pulling You Under
An Obiyuki Week 2022 Day 2 Playlist (for @snowwhite-andtheknight)
Tumblr media
Dug through some old ocean/deep sea themed playlists and found songs that perfectly fit the selkie and home themes! Didn’t initially think about the story when arranging the songs, but the bittersweet songs could represent Obi being concerned about selkie Shirayuki wanting to return to her previous life in the ocean where he can’t follow...
As you guys know, I always put my favorite songs in the playlists so I can listen to them non-stop and this playlist would be a good introduction to all of my favorites!
Submarine Symphonika- The Submarines Tides Change- The Hush Sound Waves that Rolled You Under- Young Summer Down By the Water- The Decemberists Marvelous Things- Eisley Is It Safe- Matt Pond PA Waltz on Water- Copeland Palm Reading- Fialta Under the Tide- CHVRCHES Deep Sea- Snail Mail
Summary lyrics are posted after the bonus mermaid Shirayuki!
Tumblr media
Submarine Symphonika- The Submarines
Say what you will Love finds you even when you've given it up
But now that you've promised never again It's exactly when you'll fall in
You say home's where you'll be But soon your own sweet love Who needs you will be lying in your arms
Tides Change- The Hush Sound
The tides changed, it's time to go home The waves said I should go The wind began to blow and the water got tall And that's when I went home
Going back to the boat With fresh oars, I will row Going back to unknown This SOS will never reach the coast
Waves that Rolled You Under- Young Summer
It was all a thrill I got locked in but I had to go The balcony was closed, but our minds were open
Go on and touch, don't think too deep in Don't be so scared of the things you love
Diving into waves over deeper waters Fools from far away close enough to fall in Well I never could say what I wanted I never could see the waves that rolled you under
It hits me still when you're distant Out there alone While the world is stretched we go But this time holding strong
Down By the Water- The Decemberists
See this ancient riverbed See where all the follies led Down by the water and Down by the old main drag
The season rubs me wrong The summer swells anon So knock me down, tear me up But I would bear it all broken just to fill my cup
Marvelous Things- Eisley
Dark night, hold tight And sleep tight my baby Morning light shall burst bright And keep us here safely
I followed a rabbit Through rows of mermaid-entwined shrubbery
Oh, lying in the sun Everyday feeling all of the magic in life and the wonder
Is It Safe- Matt Pond PA
Let's go for a swim Out into the waves When the lifeguards leave It's ours for the day
Let's feel like we're brave Let's give it some meaning Even if it is shallow Even if it is fake
It is safe as long as I see you way out in the water With no thought of going under We could be out here for hours
Lying in the sand I fall asleep And dream of the summer When we'd slip behind the pool And go with nature
If you're looking for something Out in the waves At least it is something You know that you're safe
It is sound as long as I see you way out in the water With no thought of going under We could be out here for hours
I see birds above the waves sit on the air And wait for something I know someday I'll be done with all this waiting
Waltz on Water- Copeland
Step lightly, we might sink in
We're waltzing on the water now I'm drowning here on solid ground We're fumbling on our common ground
I'll step lightly lest I grow tired Of the search for the cure For apathy, was it her? But by the time she returned I was fast asleep, come lay with me 'Cause I can't slow my dreaming
Palm Reading- Fialta
Wading out into the ocean As you read the palm in my hand Lazy holiday in motion Sifting all the salt from the sand
Many hours you sing for me, you know what I like
Will you have the time, will you wait for me?
Under the Tide- CHVRCHES
I'm watching you run Run from the sidelines Take in a breath, fill in your lungs Keeping you alive No fear, I'll be your eyes I'll be your lifeline And if I can be, I'll be your strength And it won't be long now
Head up, head up Keep holding, holding
Don't you take another step away from here "I would go anywhere with you" What a lie I'll break down, but you will never see Tell me, are you happy? Are you really happy?
Deep Sea- Snail Mail
Deep sea dive Got down, but you stayed alive It's only you down there You and the bends
Lose your mind Lose track of breathing in time It's only you down there Sleep with the tides
We can be anyone It took so long to know someone like you And age in the dying sun Wake only to bathe in greens and blues

13, 15, and 35 for asks?
liv !!!! thanks for sending some in <3<3<3
13. Do you listen to music while you write?  If yes, what have you been listening to recently?
i do !!! i’ve asked other people for songs they’ve listened to while writing and i have some of those, but others are just songs that convey the right vibe/emotion, so it can get pretty out there. right now, it’s high above chicago by fialta for one wip and banana pancakes by jack johnson for another :)
15. What’s your favorite time to write?
if i can get the motivation, i love going to the library and getting 1-2k out on the page before i leave. i feel so productive!!! but when i get busy or during the actual academic year i try to find time before/after/between classes and write on campus somewhere. i really write so much better out of the house :p
35. What’s your favorite fic you’ve posted?
in their tree or footprints, i think!! in their tree is special to me because i struggled with it and it’s based on a tree from my childhood (and a song that i knew i needed to write a fic to at some point), and footprints just felt necessary and i’m so so happy with how it came out :)

week one - russia
Introducing the first week into my ENGL 4430 class: today is about Russian literature! We have two familiar faces and a new author that I was happy to dive into Wikipedia for.
For this week I read: Anton Chekhov's "The Lady with the Pet Dog" Vladimir Nabokov's "Spring in Fialta" Vasily Aksenov's "Little Whale, Varnisher of Reality"
At first blush, the main theme that runs between each of the three stories in infidelity. Whether the main plot or briefly implied, the narrator in each story is cheating on their wife. However, when you really dive into the motivations behind each man’s actions, the infidelity is ultimately an outlet—a way to cope or a form of excitement and/or relief from their normal life. Instead of classic cheating tropes of the 21st century, the betrayal of a lover is not the conflict in any of these stories.
In “The Lady with the Pet Dog”, the narrator, Gurov, substitutes his mistress Anna for a healthier outlet. He is irritated by his existing life and (like most older stories which kills me to no end) hates his wife. However, Chekhov (yes, that Chekhov of famous Gun Lore™) doesn’t set up Gurov or Anna as tragic figures or misunderstood or even pitiful; if anything, they are both pathetic, needy creatures who shamefully give in to this temptation again and again. Instead of this cycle of betrayal being the main part of the story, Chekhov turns it into an exploration of Gurov’s desire to have a life different than his current one. His infidelity isn’t particularly interesting nor is it truly part of the conflict. The main conflict centers around Gurov’s feeling of instability and irritability in his existing relationships. This is only exacerbated by Anna’s cowardice as she cannot bring herself to break off their affair, even though the text makes it obvious that neither of them of particularly happy with their arrangement.
In contrast to the ugly affair in “The Lady with the Pet Dog”, the affair in “Spring in Fialta” is less erratic. Written by Vladimir Nabokov, author of Lolita, this story is far more interesting both in structure and character design. The structure of the story spans years in flashback, narrated by Victor, with each scene being about Victor’s mistress Nina. The story describes their encounters, yet it becomes increasingly obvious that Nina is not at all as interested in Victor as he is with her. While she does recognize him, it’s always from some faraway place—she acknowledges that he exists, but how he exists in relation to her is always nebulous though she welcomes his company all the same. Neither of them are actually real to the other; they just kind of exist in each other’s peripheries and imaginations. At the end, when Victor finally tells Nina that he loves her, she dies! it can’t get any more untouchable than that. Their adventure is a fantasy that is completely unstable in the grip of reality.
The last story of the bunch is Vasily Aksenov’s “Little Whale, Varnisher of Reality”. Aksenov is a more contemporary writer—and, for better or worse, not as famous as Chekhov or Nabokov. However, I liked this story over the others. The sense of adventure in “Little Whale” comes from the narrator’s son, who is affectionately nicknamed Whale. While Tolya does have his own mistress, she only exacerbates his anxieties - with little Whale, they all fade away. It’s sweet to read how taken he is with his young son, playing and telling stories about all of Whale’s favorite animals and how they must be the good guys. Whale doesn’t have any adult responsibilities or fears; he sees the world simply and enjoys it simply. It is through this rose-tinted perspective that Tolya relaxes into and actively joins Whale in this imaginary world; it’s not a downward spiral like Gurov and Anna or smoke in the wind like Victor and Nina, either. Of the three stories, this is definitely the most charming vicarious living.
Personally, I didn’t really enjoy Chekhov’s story as much as Nabokov or Aksenov’s. I don’t really get cheating, you know? Though, I must say that using a person to escape the reality of your life is much more understandable (yet somehow worse in some ways) than just because you don’t care about your partner. Either way you’re a scumbag, but even scumbags can have depth to them—Gurov, however, really wasn’t my kind of scumbag.
