"There's been a murder!" arguably the most uttered phrase ever by a Scottish TV cop and on February 21st 1935 the man himself, Mark McManus was born.
Taggart star Mark McManus, despite dying aged just 59, in 1994, lived more lives than most. Hamilton-born Mark had already been a miner, a docker, and an amateur boxer before he took up acting - in Australia, where he shared screen time with both Skippy The Bush Kangaroo, and Mick Jagger, in director Tony Richardson's 1970 take on the Ned Kelly story
Returning home in 1971, McManus appeared in productions at the Royal Court and the National Theatre, playing alongside such actors as Sir John Gielgud and Sir Ralph Richardson. But it was not until 1983 that he found the role which he was born to play, Tough Glasgow polisman, Jim Taggart. To some critics, the character veered into the danger zone of caricature: the sort of Glaswegian hardnut who could be summed up by all those cliched epithets: 'dour', 'gruff', 'gritty', 'stony-faced', he certainly carried off the part with ease.
He may have come across all of them, but in real life Mark loved a wee laugh to himself, one anecdote I found to confirm this relates to last weeks birthday girl, Annette Crosbie, who incidentally attended Edinburgh's Boroughmuir School with my Uncle Edmund!.
Anyway Annette featured in a 1987 edition of Taggart. Being a perfectionist, she kept asking McManus to rehearse together. McManus, who usually read over his lines just once before filming, became so annoyed that during one scene he went to light her cigarette and "accidentally" burnt away part of her wig with an extra-long flame (a gaff which later featured on It'll be Alright on the Night). While making the next episode, McManus quipped to a co-star, "I hope you're not gonna be any trouble or I'll set you on fire like the last one!"
McManus was a graduate summa cum laude of the 'Less Is More' School of Acting.
An average of 13 million viewers (including, it is said, the Queen Mother) agreed. Taggart became as synonymous with Glasgow as Inspector Morse is with Oxford. The programme is now Scottish Television's biggest money-earner, playing in over 60 countries, including Afghanistan, India, Japan, Sri Lanka, Brunei and Bosnia. Wonder how they all translated the word "murd'rrr"?!!?

people need to realize the barbie movie is not the epitome of feminism. yes, it did highlight women’s importance and issues women face in society but those issues are incredibly minuscule in comparison to ACTUAL problems women in the world face.
in certain places in the world, there are women who have no access to education. they are expected to be married off like they’re some sort of cattle. they raised in a society that expects one thing from them and that’s extreme subservience to men.
in palestine, women and little girls are taking medical substances to prevent their menstrual cycle because they do not have access to hygiene products. they are being raped by idf soldiers, they are being held captive, and they are being murdered.
in countries like india, singapore, sri lanka, and more, marital rape is still legal.
my point is not to take away people’s joy for the film, but putting it on this sort of pedestal of values for feminism is taking away importance of actual feminist issues.

Sally Field in Norma Rae (Martin Ritt, 1979)
Cast: Sally Field, Beau Bridges, Ron Leibman, Barbara Baxley, Gail Strickland, Morgan Paull, Robert Broyles, John Calvin. Screenplay: Irving Ravetch, Harriet Frank Jr. Cinematography: John A. Alonzo. Production design: Walter Scott Herndon. Film editing: Sidney Levin. Music: David Shire.
If Norma Rae were made today, it would have to end with the owners closing the textile mill after the pro-union vote and shipping the jobs to Sri Lanka. Only two years after the movie was released, Ronald Reagan fired the striking air traffic controllers, giving impetus to the anti-union movement that persists to this day. Which is not just to say that Norma Rae is dated -- it was a bit that way at the time -- but that it persists in the memory largely because of Sally Field's breakthrough performance. It won her her first Oscar, and a well-deserved one: She carries the movie as few actresses have done before or since, freeing her from the trap that the TV series Gidget (1965-66) and The Flying Nun (1967-70) had caught her in. She had proved herself with the 1976 TV miniseries Sybil, for which she won an Emmy, but nothing demonstrated her ability to hold an audience in her grasp like Norma Rae. The screenplay by Irving Ravetch and Harriet Frank Jr. also earned an Oscar nomination, but it's scattered and sketchy, only touching lightly on the many elements of union organizing in the South -- racism, political chicanery, violence -- which are probably more important to understand than what the film focuses on: the grit and determination of one young textile worker and one stereotypically lefty Jewish organizer (Ron Leibman).

Black Phoenix: Third World Perspective on Contemporary Art and Culture, 2022, Primary Information
108 pages. 8.3 x 11.8 inches. Paperback. Edition of 2500.
Editors: Rasheed Araeen and Mahmood Jamal Managing Editor: Rachel Valinsky Managing Designer: Dan Bourke
価格:3,520円(税込)
/////
This publication is a compilation of all three issues of the journal Black Phoenix published as a single volume. Edited and published by Rasheed Araeen and Mahmood Jamal between 1978 and 1979 in the United Kingdom, Black Phoenix remains a key and radical document of transnational solidarity and cultural production in the visual arts, literature, activism, and beyond.
More than a decade after the liberation movements of the 1960s and the historic Bandung and Tricontinental Conferences, which called for social and political alignment and solidarity among the nations of Africa, Asia, and Latin America in order to dismantle Western imperialism and (neo)colonialism, Black Phoenix issued a rallying cry for the formation of a liberatory arts and culture movement throughout the Third World. International in scope, Black Phoenix positioned diasporic and colonial histories at the center of an evolving anti-racist and anti-imperialist consciousness in late 1970s Britain and beyond—one that would yield complex and nuanced discourses of race, class, and postcolonial theory in the decade that followed. Black Phoenix proposed a horizon for Blackness that transcended racial binaries, across the Third World and the West.
Contributors include art critics, scholars, artists, poets, and writers, including Rasheed Araeen (Pakistan) and Mahmood Jamal (Pakistan), Guy Brett (United Kingdom), Kenneth Coutts-Smith (United Kingdom), Ariel Dorfman (Chile), Eduardo Galeano (Uruguay), N. Kilele (Tanzania), Babatunde Lawal (Nigeria), David Medalla (Philippines), Ayyub Malik (Pakistan), Susil Siriwardena (Sri Lanka), and Chris Wanjala (Kenya).
Rasheed Araeen is a Karachi-born, London-based artist, activist, writer, editor, and curator. Aareen founded the critical journals Black Phoenix, Third Text, and Third Text Asia, and took on activist roles with the Black Panthers and Artists for Democracy. His work has been exhibited widely, including, most recently, at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation, Chicago; BALTIC Centre of Contemporary Art, Gateshead; MAMCO, Geneva; Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; Tate Britain, London; the 2017 Venice Biennale; and Documenta 14, Athens/Kassel, among others.
Mahmood Jamal was born in Lucknow, India, and moved to Britain from Pakistan in 1967. He published several books of poetry, including Sugar Coated Pill (2007), and translated the Islamic Mystical Poetry: Sufi Verse from the Early Mystics to Rumi (2009) and Faiz: Fifty Poems (2013), among other titles. In 1983, he co-formed the all-Asian Retake Film and Video Collective production company, and initiated Epicflow Films in 1989. Jamal worked as an independent producer and writer; produced several documentary series, including Islamic Conversations; was a lead writer on Britain’s first Asian soap, Family Pride (1991–92), and wrote and produced Turning World (1996) for Channel4 television. He died in London in December 2020.

Introduction | A Brief Summary
"A workaholic, fed up with how their workplace treats them, quits their job in order to take their life back into their own hands. To celebrate, they decide to race through an overcrowded city at the crack of dawn to do the one thing that they can control in the moment; see the sunrise."
CATCH THE SUNRISE is a 2D experimental animation about workaholism in a not-so-perfect world. It is my first, of what I am sure to be many, love letters to animation; to the people around me who spurred me on this journey, and a pseudo-representation of the anxieties that I felt before getting a job myself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This film stars Katu (they/them), a bundle of anxiety far too in over their head. After landing what they thought would be the job of their dreams, Katu realises that not all was how it seemed, and slowly deteriorates under the pressure of their abusive supervisor. At the half-way point of their story, they explode and spontaneously decide to leave. Why do they want to see the sunrise? It is because of an emotional connection they share with memories associated with the sunrise; of their partner who used to watch the sunrise with them in calmer times.
The title CATCH THE SUNRISE stems from the notion of carpe diem; seize the day. The name is also in reference to the Solarpunk world of this film, a feeling that is just beyond the horizon that you could almost reach out and grab it. The sunrise also functions as a point of salvation for Katu. It symbolises hope, awe, wonder, and freedom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The film takes place in the bustling city of Colombo, Sri Lanka, but not as we know it in our world. This version of Sri Lanka draws from Solarpunk aesthetics and technology. It is a world where hard work is prioritised over all else to move towards a better future for everyone. This film explores the exploitative nature of this philosophy of "hard work", through how Katu is treated in office, the obscene times that they leave work, and through the fact that heavy traffic is present as early as 5.30 in the morning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Technology has advanced to the point that it has merged with cultural imagery and natural forms, such as it usually does in Solarpunk media. The film has an undertone of the beauty of Sri Lanka and its natural resources, and how these resources could be used to better the quality of life in the city. Furthermore, I included innovative methods of energy generation within the city itself as set pieces on Katu's adventure.
This is a brief summary of the different components of my project, with a more detailed explanation of the conceptualisation, research, and development phases properly delved into in my blog for MI6021. Since this module features all aspects of the production and post-production process, I wanted to break down all my steps here so that it would be easier to map out my progress later on.

UPM Raflatac's sustainable label stock solutions in India
Tumblr media
UPM Raflatac offers high-quality self-adhesive paper and film products, helping brands, designers, and printers in selecting the optimal label to bring their packaging designs to life. Through its innovative solutions, the company aims to enhance the sustainability and circularity of the label material's value chain.
In India, UPM Raflatac – which opened a new slitting and distribution terminal in Mumbai in March 2024 – provides a range of products, including general category chromo label stock, filmic, and specialized application labels, catering to various industries such as food, pharma, logistics, FMCG, retail, textile, wines, spirits, beverages, durable and automotive segments, said Suresh Valecha, country manager – India, UPM Raflatac.
“Alongside facilitating transactional exchanges with converters, we offer value-added services for label customization and developing tailored products to critical applications. Our sustainable approach aims to boost production efficiency while minimizing customer pain points and ensuring satisfaction,” Valecha added.
UPM Raflatac is supplying these products in the entire Indian subcontinent along with Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka with dedicated sales and marketing teams based in India, Valecha said, adding that all major converters and end users in India make up their customer base.
Sustainable label stock solutions for the Indian market
Tumblr media
“Our commitment to sustainability allows our customers to provide the best sustainable options to consumers without compromising end-product performance. We are contributing to a critical mission – a future beyond fossils. Sustainability is at the core of how we operate,” he added.
UPM Raflatac is contributing to UPM's target to reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2030 in its value chain, operations, and products, with the ultimate aim of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, he said. “In India, we offer 100% FSC-certified products, ensuring the highest standards of sustainability. Employing the principles of reduce, recycle, renew, and reuse, we empower brand owners and printers to make a positive impact with sustainable labels,” he added
UPM Raflatac actively reduces label stock thicknesses to alleviate the burden on our renewable resources and minimize paper/film consumption throughout the value chain. In addition, the company's focus extends to facilitating the reuse of packaging containers across various industries, including glass, PP, HDPE, LDPE, or PET types. UPM Raflatac has also introduced a wash-off adhesive product range for glass and PET containers, along with a specially designed adhesive (PURECYCLE) for HDPE/LDPE containers.
In India, the company has introduced 100% recycled-based chromo label stock, which incorporates 30%, 70% or 90% recycled content based on PP/PE/PET, tailored for different industries. UPM Raflatac's recycled portfolio holds certifications from RECYCLASS and APR, along with food-grade certification for future applications in food secondary packaging in India, Valecha shared.
UPM Raflatac's latest innovation, Forest Film, is produced using 100% non-renewable sources, offering a sustainable alternative that reduces dependency on renewable resources across packaging applications, he told Packaging South Asia.
New slitter terminal in India
UPM Raflatac opened a new slitting and distribution terminal in Mumbai, India in March 2024. The new facility is aimed at further improving service and quality to UPM Raflatac’s customers and strengthening the relationships in the region.
“Customers welcomed the step of the new world-class terminal, which will enhance production capacity, reduce turnaround time, leading to better service, shorter lead times, and most importantly happier customers,” Valecha said, adding converters and end-users are welcome to visit the new terminal and see for themselves what goes on behind the curtains of label-stock production, conversion, and deliveries.
“India is in a very good space now, whether it is concerning the economy, consumer spending or industry growth. We have a huge consumer base with very low packaging per capita consumption as compared to the rest of the world,” Valecha shared.
“Packaging and labels are an integral part of products, and consumers want exquisite and sustainable packaging. So, we want and will cater to end-users in all parts of South of Asia. We keep a tab on growth engines and on accelerating revenues to set up the base soon other than in central India,” he concluded.

SUMMARIZING - IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES
ACTIVITY 01
Select from given topics below and summarize them in no more than fifty words each.
 1. Your hometown
2. Bill Gates
 3. The person you admire
 4. The last book you read
 5. A film you saw recently
 6. Your best choice
The summary may be just one or two sentences, to explain the main idea of the article, and perhaps compare it with another summarized text, or it might be necessary to include much more detail.
A FILM YOU SAW RECENTLY
The last film I watched was Kung Fu Panda 4. The plot centered around Po and Zhen going on a journey to defeat a new villain called The Chameleon. Critic reviews were disappointed with the movie and so was I. In my opinion, it was a discredit to the franchise.
MY HOMETOWN
