The devious, notorious Captain of the Orcs, fully defeated by a proud proper lady 😁
This gorgeous new art is by the amazing Sweets, and Grimarr and Jule are from my book The Lady and the Orc! I published it four years ago today, fully expecting that no one but me would ever read it... I'm just so grateful to all my reader friends who have made it possible for me to keep writing in this world ever since 💚💚💚

And oh, his eyes. His eyes, blazing bright with triumph, with satisfaction, and with... relief.
It's Orctober, and I almost forgot! But what better time to paint these three? My OT3 Drafli, Baldr, and Alma, from @finleyfenn's The Maid and the Orcs.

I’ve been anticipating Varinn and Thrain’s story for a long time, everyone’s favourite Grisk disaster boys. We’ve seen throughout the series how Thrain’s been spiralling into alcoholism, and this book doesn’t pull any punches in addressing the issues, but it’s done with a great deal of empathy. The world of Orc Sworn is richly written and by now visiting them is like snuggling under a blanket after a long day.
Varinn is the good boy who struggles not to live up to everyone’s expectations of him being perfect.
Thrain is a hot Grisk mess who at the beginning of this book is hitting rock bottom in a pub, when who should happen to sit next to him but Kitty, who has been the perfect mistress for any man in business, coming to drown her sorrows after the worst day of her life, having been dropped by her protector who kicks the boot in by demanding all the jewellery back he’s ever given her. They share their woes and give each other a sympathetic shoulder to cry on, and Thrain being a nice orc, offers to walk her home to make sure she gets there safe and sound…all the way to her bedroom door…like you do.
All three characters grow and develop throughout the book and the relationship that develops between them is beautiful. They bring out the best in each other, as all good relationships should, but it is not an easy journey to get there. This is the most angst-ridden book of the whole series, which is saying a lot! Yet Finley Fenn masterfully manages it so that the angst never feels too much to bear for the reader. This book also showed them growing and learning not only as individuals but also about their own likes and dislikes in the bedroom. The smut level was off the charts and yet every scene was different enough to maintain your interest. Plus extra bonus point, the sex scenes start early in the book 🔥🔥🔥
The Grisk orcs are famous for their exceptional sense of smell and their love of bling. With both of our main male characters coming from the Grisk clan both play an important part. Smell almost feels like a character in its own right in the way it came to play into the plot at key moments. I wish that this book came with its own scratch and sniff element, as I would love to smell Varinn and Kitty the way Thrain does. Or an illustrated edition would be spectacular you, you know for literary purposes….
Tumblr media
We’re spoilt in this book as there is second tale weaving between that of the main characters, taking place between Dammarr and Thrak. I don’t want to give anything away, but it is beautiful and sensitively done. The friendship that develops between Kitty and Dammarr is unexpected, but wonderful to experience. We get to peel back the layers on Dammarr, a character that we first got to know in The Heiress and The Orc. My absolute favourite scene from the entire book occurs between Dammarr and Thrak towards the end. I won’t give any details away so that the magic can unfold for you as you read the book, and you can enjoy it in its untainted glory.
If there wasn’t enough to love about this book, kittens keep popping up! And who can resist kittens?!

Finley Fenn has then gone on to spoil her readers by providing a bonus prologue AND epilogue, which you must make sure you read. It helps to get over the book hangover that all good books give you when you desperately don’t want them to end.
Now the long wait for the next book begins…
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy in exchange for my honest review.

I think about this book often. Because of this book, my entire friend group knows how strongly I feel about the word 'prick' being used in a 'sexy setting'. I personally don't think prick is a sexy word at all.
Like really, the amount of times I've shouted something like "The word Prick has no business describing giant, meaty orc cock" in the middle of a social gathering should probably be embarrassing... but I have no shame...
I didn't finish this book... I'd still like to try again one day, but it just makes me so angry. I've seen so much praise for the author and series though, and sometimes I wonder if I was really fair...

crawling into your ask box to beg for your monster book recs
i've had my eye on ice planet barbarians for a while, but i thought i would ask the resident monster expert
you already had me picking up the captive prince i'm the captive prince anon so i know you'd never do me wrong
Sorry, Captive Prince anon. I turned anons off tonight and deleted all [garbled number] asks in my box (sorry if your ask went unanswered) so now everyone is forced to say what they think to me to my face for the time being.
My monster fic recc's?
The Hoard King series by Zoey Draven. If you know me then you know how rabid I am about this series. Humans vs alien barbarian dudes (they have tails if memory serves me- perhaps a reread???). Basically humans are resettled on a new planet and a few (un)lucky ladies run afoul with the local warlords. I think it checks a lot of ACOTAR loving girlies boxes
Of course you should read Ruby Dixon's ice planet barbarians but her dragon shifter series was the inspiration for Wonderland and if you liked dragon shifter Lucien/Az/Cassian, you will LOVE hers. The premise is different- earth is also inhospitable thanks to a rip in the world where dragons come through, and surprise! They have human mates.
Opal Reyne is like, 101 monster girlie reading. I really liked her Duskwalker Bride trilogy and that's probably where I would start if you're looking for a legit monster
The Krakens Sacrifice by Katee Robert- it's fine. Something about Katee Roberts writing is just meh to me. Sometimes it's really good and I love it and other times it's just not it. I didn't like her RH Vampire book and I know people raved about it, and I did like this mostly. I finished it, and I think its good.
Finley Fenn's Orc Romance series. God yes, and you can finally see what @/ablogofbipanic is always teasing me about. These books are REALLY good, again I think the ACOTAR girlies would enjoy it. I have one minor complaint about how much the FMC enjoys drinking a certain bodily fluid and when I flippantly said it must taste like diet coke they way they go after it, I have never known a moments peace
Devoured By Monsters by Katie May and Ann Denton. Is this good? No. Not at all. Is it entertaining? yes. And sometimes that's enough. It's reverse harem that leans into the monster genre in the most absurd way (someone can shape shift into a mouth) and the whole time I was like, do I need to re-find religion? Uncertain.
This is where I would start for now. I almost added the spider romance that was the inspiration for Vansssssspider but honestly it has too much spider politics and not enough spider [redacted] which is what we all came for.

For the person who asked for good monster erotica(bc tumblr won’t let me reply to the original post) or anyone else who is curious: Lyonne Riley, Zoey Draven, Kass O’Shire, Finley Fenn, Mallory Dunlin, Ruby Dixon, Grave Draven, Katee Robert, and Tiffany Roberts. These are all fab authors with great world building and I’d recommend giving one of these a shot!!!
thanks for the recommendations! :)

Do all you know any series/authors that are as great as ipb? I'm 20 books away from being done with all of Ruby Dixon's work that might seem like a lot but it's really not lol
Not having read any of the Ice Planet Barbarians books, I can't confidently recommend something similar. The only author whose work I've read exhaustively is Terry Pratchett, and like many Pratchett fans, I can be a little unhinged about my love for his books and will seize any opportunity to encourage people to read him (but don't start with The Colour of Magic!). But he was (mayherestinpeace) the master of satire-fantasy, a far cry from the fantasy-romance/erotica that Dixon is known for. Once you're done with the hot blue aliens, you could give Finley Fenn's hot green orcs a try :)
Or if you just want recs for straight-up fantasy by authors who are still alive and publishing books, my favourites are Leigh Bardugo, Naomi Novik, Holly Black and Neil Gaiman.
