Animal Spotlight: Fin Whale
Tumblr media
At up to 88 feet long, and weighing up to 70 tons, Fin Whales need to eat quite a bit to survive. They consume up to 2 tons of food daily, feeding primarily on krill, various fish, and sometimes squid. The Fin Whale feeds by using its rows of baleen plates in its mouth, filtering out up to 18,000 gallons of water to trap its food.

Whales at Sea As we left Greenland behind, it took only short time before we got into the major whale highway along the Greenlandic coast - a good sighting of ablue whale close to the boat, and about half a dozen fin whales. But the real show was a group of humpback whales, some really close to the ship, doing their classic dives, showing the characteristic flukes. #travel2unlimited #travel #travelblog #arctic #arcticcircle #greenland#eastgreenland #oceanwideexp #expedition @oceanwideexp #whales #whalewatching #humpbackwhale #finwhale (at Greenland) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiROnRwDlRk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Wednesday, July 27, 2022 It just keeps getting better and better! 5 species of cetaceans and 6 species of pelagic girds on this trip Twenty minutes from the Lighthouse and about 4 miles away we found 80-100 inshore bottlenose dolphins chasing bait at the surface and diving to 75 feet for bait at the sea floor. We headed on our way and found our first whales about an hour later. We saw 7 different humpback whales blow at the same time! WOW! It gets better – there were two mom/calf humpback pairs including Rune and her 2022 calf. No other humpback researchers knew that she had a calf until we found with her! We have yet to ID the 2nd mom. The humpbacks were breaching, bubble feeding, open mouth feeding, flipper slapping! WOW! We also had at least 4 finback whales – 2 mom/calf pairs. Oh, let’s not forget about 60 short-beaked common dolphins. Another spectacular trip and probably the best yet. 7 humpbacks whales 4 finback whales 2 minke whales 100 inshore bottlenose 60 short-beaked common dolphins 380 Great shearwaters 120 Cory’s shearwaters 8 Sooty shearwaters 12 Manx shearwaters 1 dark phase Parasitic jaeger 2 red phalaropes #montaukwhalewatch #cresli #creslivikingfleetwhalewatch #vikingfleetmontauk #humpbackwhale #finbackwhale #finwhale #2022whalewatchingseason #balaenopteraphysalus #megapteranovaeangliae #tursiopstruncatus #delphinus #pelagicbirds #longislandwildlife (at Montauk, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cgomva2OBZS/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

As we discuss in our latest #whaletalespodcast episode, Fin Whales are one of the few vertebrates that are asymmetrically colored. The right side of their mouth (including their baleen!) is a white/yellow colouration while the left side is a dark colour. The variations of color on the right side are one of the ways individual fin whales are identified! #whaletalespodcast #finwhale #whaletales #podcast #subscribe #whalepodcast #storytelling #whales #whalesareawesome #finwhales https://www.instagram.com/p/CSHzfPAn4wH/?utm_medium=tumblr

Animal Spotlight: Fin Whale
Tumblr media
Did you know that the Fin Whale population once numbered approximately 45,000 whales in the North Pacific Ocean before the whaling era? The population was decimated to an estimated 18,700 whales during that time. Today, there are around 9,000 Fin Whales that migrate along the West Coast, with their number showing strong growth. Fin Whales at Sea As we left the Svalbard archipelago and set course into the open sea west toward the Greenland shores, it didn’t take long to spot the whales. Nearly a dozen fin whales quite close to the ship, spouts everywhere, glowing in the low evening sun. Also one blue whale, one sperm whale, one minor whale, and several groups of white-beaked dolphins. Fin whales are the second largest whale species in the world after the blue, reaching 25 m (85 ft) in length and 75 tons in weight. They have long and slender bodies, and are sometimes referred to as “razorback” whales. They don’t show tails when diving, but can be identified by their fin when swimming (although sei whales look very similar but are smaller in size). #travel2unlimited #travel #travelblog #arctic #arcticcircle ##eastgreenland #whales #whalewatching #finwhale #finwhales #expedition @oceanwideexp (at Svalbard) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChxHaebrLcG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Posted @withregram • @oceanskeepers Mindless killing machines?? Not at all! Unfortunately, the media and Hollywood have brainwashed the wider public into believing that a shark’s sole purpose is the kill, kill, kill. But the reality is, our oceans need sharks. As @sharkangels explains, sharks are critical to the survival of our oceans. Their role at the top of the food chain isn’t to mindlessly hunt prey but in fact to keep the ocean’s delicate ecosystem healthy and prosperous. Here we have a couple of Blue Sharks doing their duties to remove a rotting Fin Whale carcass from the ocean’s surface.
