Here's another one for SECAC; an adult male Short-beaked common dolphin. The female below is an older illustration (though I changed her slightly to match better) but I though it'd be fun to post them together to show the differences.

Although subtle, this species does display sexual dimorphism. Males tend to have bolder markings, especially around the face (the pectoral fin-to-chin stripe in females is often thinner and/or yellow instead of black) and the anal area. Most reliable for sexing though is the post-anal hump, the "bump" between the belly and flukes, which readily identifies all adult males.

Common dolphins are something of a comfort subject to me, I love drawing them and they always turn out so pretty (this is to say more about their natural beauty than my drawing prowess). This guy was a delight to draw and I'm very happy with the result.

Freckles

As a child I always believed my freckles were ugly. Characters in the books I read always lamented how plain and ugly their freckles made them. "Fair" was always something to aspire to. Mothers plied daughters with lotions and creams to lighten their complexions.

But I loved being outdoors in the sun, and with that came freckles.

When I lamented my freckles aloud in the hearing of others, adults around me reassured me they were "cute!" and that lots of people liked freckles. But I didn't like freckles, and they were on my face, so it didn't matter to me whether or not other people said they liked them. By then I had learned that well meaning adults lie, so I trusted the wisdom in my books instead. I longed to be old enough to wear makeup so I could hide them.

When I finally got to wear makeup, I swiftly learned that I needed a thick layer of foundation to even out the color of my skin, and my moles were still visible no matter their color because they made little bumps that looked like I was hiding acne. I also learned that makeup feels and smells gross to me, and that I didn't have the patience or time in the mornings to put it on. I have never been a morning person.

Another thing I learned is that I look really weird without freckles on my face, especially when my arms and hands are still covered in them.

In high school I learned about body positivity, which felt as fake to me as the lies of well meaning adults. And eventually I learned about body neutrality, which fits me much better. I do love my body, but more for its functionality than for its aesthetics.

Although these days, I do find my freckles cute. I have a collection of moles on my cheek that comprise the constellation delphinus.

And here's the finished babu! This illustration - another one for SECAC - took by far the longest as its the only one requested at high detail. The commissioner wanted all the details of a true newborn to be visible.

The most special might be the vibrissae, or whiskers, visible on the rostrum. While some cetaceans retain whiskers into adulthood (baleen whales and river dolphins having quite a good covering), most oceanic dolphins are hairless as adults. However at birth they all show their mammalhood in the form of a couple of whiskers. How long they keep them depends, some babies lose them within hours, others keep them for a few days.

Another sign of a very "fresh" baby is the floppy dorsal fin and flukes. These are entirely made of cartilage, and are completely soft during gestation and birth. The dorsal fin usually hardens first, followed by the flukes. Note also the peanut head - normally a sign of extreme emaciation in adult cetaceans, for newborns it is normal. Soon their mother's rich milk grants them a healthy layer of baby fat, turning them into the round adorable calves many are perhaps more familiar with.

Nori-wahli is the fictional species of extraterrestrial life introduced in Rescris as part of Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure sequel.

Physiology

With the exception of their physical characteristics and their six flippers for flight and mobility, Nori-wahli were similar to right whales. Thatrollwan Mites, an extraterrestrial lifeform that resembles mites in our world, covered the Nori-wahli. They caused it to turn into a wart or tumor due to their advanced age or diet, yet it was innocuous and resembled barnacle rocks without actual barnacles.

Includes wolves, foxes, and various breeds of dogs. Also known as wolfkind, foxkind and dogkind.

Includes smaller species of birds, such as parrots and finches. Primary features are wings and talons.

Includes birds with webbed feet that can be found in the area. Swans, ducks, geese and seagulls.

Raptorkind-

Includes birds of prey, such as eagles, hawks and falcons.

Represented by Aquila/Ruis

Foxkind-

While technically a species of Caninekind, some scholars have given Foxkind a category all its own due to their unique mannerisms and mythologies.
