They’d been dating a few months when Henry called Alex while they were watching TV. Alex had dug his phone out of his pocket and leapt up off of the couch when he’d checked the screen. “Henry?” Alex had frozen, made a small noise in his throat, and continued in a soft, soothing voice, like he was speaking to a child or a spooked horse. “Hey, hey, it’s alright. I’m here.” He’d smashed the phone into his chest just long enough to whisper, “I’m sorry, I might be awhile.” Then he’d whipped the phone up to his ear and hauled ass into his bedroom. “Breathe with me, sweetheart, that’s it,” floated back to him before Alex shut the door.

WIP Wednesday

After finishing the fic I posted Friday, I didn't have any words for awhile. But I'm back to work on my exes to lovers fic, which is my current priority. So here's a bit of that, fresh off the Doc.

Henry wakes with a faceful of wild, curly hair. Alex must have shifted in his sleep, and Henry is pretty sure it was the hair tickling his nose that woke him. He exhales, allowing the curls to exit his nostrils and pulls back, just far enough to allow him to breathe comfortably. Henry is used to sleeping alone. Save for the occasional hookup that stayed until morning – none of whom ever cuddled anyway – he always has. Having the equivalent of a 155-lb koala with grabby hands in his bed has taken some getting used to, but Henry doesn’t think he’d ever turn down the chance to be held like this in Alex’s arms. He’s already grown accustomed to the extra warmth and even begun to crave the gentle snores and slow morning blinks from the man in his bed. He’s in so fucking deep that Henry doesn’t quite know what to do with it, but he's enjoying it for as long as he can. Alex smiles sleepily at Henry when he wakes, pressing gentle kisses to the bare skin under his cheek before snuggling back in, apparently content to snooze for a bit longer. In an hour or two, they’ll wake again and lazily take each other apart; Henry shuddering under clever hands as he comes with Alex’s name on his lips, Alex quieter than he is at most times, but still vocal in his pleasure. They’ll eat a late breakfast and spend the afternoon together before going to dinner or ordering takeout again. It’s become Henry’s absolute favourite way to spend his weekend, and his anxiety at the thought of losing this precious thing is second only to the joy it brings him.

There's REASONS for this, of course, and they want the freedom to be public, but there's no question about whether it's for show or for real.

Outside, they fake only friendship. Inside, they are themselves.

RWRB and Richards

Ok, so, obviously, Red, White, and Royal Blue is a really important movie as well as book, yada yada yada, good faith criticism, etc.

I’ve seen a lot of discussion about the changes made between the book and the movie, and across the board a lot of those changes made me sad (rip June). I want to talk about the changes made to Richards in the film, specifically his home state. In the film, Richards is from Michigan. I imagine this change was made to allow Richards to capture the Midwest vote and create more tension with Texas, or whatever. In the book, though, Richards is from Utah, a state that always has been red and probably always will be. Alex specifically refers to the Richards campaign as “Utah ugly, Christian ugly, ugliness couched in dog whistles and toothy white smiles”. This kind of ugly is lost in the movie, and Alex and Henry aren’t even outed by Richards campaign, and instead by some random (queer??? jealous???) journalist.

This change, for me, was incredibly painful. To be a successful politician in Utah, membership in the Mormon church is a necessity, and the LDS church has immense political power within the state. As a queer, intersex kid growing up in the heart of Utah’s LDS enclaves, I experienced Utah ugly firsthand. I even experienced a privacy violation when one of my religious leaders outed me to other adults in my parent’s church community without my consent, a type of violation that is encouraged within the church.

I first read RWRB when I was 19, during my second year of college. It changed my life. I had never read a book where queer characters, characters like me, got to be happy. I think part of the reason the story resonated so much with me is that the primary acute threat to Alex and Henry’s happiness is from my home state, acting on the same values and principles that were and are so harmful to me. I don’t know, that was just lost in the movie, and that made me sad. Obviously, changes have to be made when adapting from one medium to another, and I understand that. This tiny change made a huge deal to me, though, and I think it just goes to show that it’s really hard to adapt a story that means so much to so many people. That’s all.

In theory, yes, he’s always up for fucking with homophobes, but the wicked grin on Alex’s face should have told him that this would be a bad idea.

So of course, Henry agrees.

It’s a pool party. It’s a bloody pool party in the Hamptons and Henry is not going to survive Alex Claremont-Diaz in his ridiculously tiny swimming trunks. Those shorts are criminal, actually. He’s especially not going to survive Alex plopping down on the lounge chair next to him and passing a bottle of sun cream over his shoulder.

“Do my back, would you?” Henry follows Alex’s line of sight over to where his soon-to-be-former boss is frowning at them disapprovingly, and Alex tosses a cheeky grin back at him. “Baby?”

Absolutely no survivors, to be certain.

Henry dutifully takes the bottle and smooths the cream over Alex’s back, careful not to miss any spots, and if he lingers a little long in doing so, well, it’s just to sell the deception. He almost thinks he feels Alex shiver a little as Henry’s fingers brush along the waistband of his trunks, but that’s impossible—it’s ridiculously warm out. Then he allows Alex to put sun cream on his back, which is horrible, terrible, the worst thing that’s ever happened to him, in fact.

(He never, ever wants it to stop.)

Somehow, Henry lets himself be dragged into the pool and talked into a game of chicken. He’s led to understand that usually it would be a woman sitting on a man’s shoulders, but one of Alex’s coworkers is a terrifying woman with long, dark hair pulled back in a ponytail, and she’s very confident she can take Alex and Henry down. Her husband—a lovely chap and fellow Brit, who Henry spent quite a bit of time talking to earlier—gives Henry an apologetic look for what is about to happen. Alex is, of course, undeterred.

The battle is hard fought and, look—Henry isn’t opposed to being strangled by Alex’s thighs, but he didn’t imagine it would be like this. Eventually Zahra is victorious, sending Alex crashing into the pool, and of course he drags Henry along with him. They come up spluttering, and Alex loops his arms around Henry’s neck, pulling him close as they bob in the water, catching their breath.

“Hey,” Alex breathes, his face way too close to Henry’s. “Kiss me?”

Henry swallows hard and glances around, but he can’t see Alex’s boss anywhere. “Because your boss is watching?” he asks.

“Because I want you to,” Alex says, as if it’s that simple.

Maybe it is. Henry doesn’t let himself overthink it, for once; he leans in, wrapping his arms around Alex’s waist, and kisses him. Slides their mouths together, sweet and slow, restrained but just heated enough to promise more.

“Can I tell you a secret?” Alex asks when they part.

“Ok.”

“I didn’t just ask you to this to fuck with my boss.”

Henry’s heart is in this throat. “No?”

“No, baby,” Alex says laughing a little. “I want this to be real.” He pauses, his eyebrows crinkling uncertainly. “If… you do, too?”

Henry kisses him again, which he figures is answer enough.

Panic curdles low in his gut as the call rings out; rings and rings and rings just as it always has, no answer waiting for him on the other end. He drops the phone when it goes to voicemail, backing up against his headboard and clutching at the fabric of his shirt over his heart.

Alex reaches for his hand.

And Henry doesn't mean to do it—it's entirely a reflex that has been hammered into the fabric of his DNA for years and is apparently reborn in the presence of the royal vultures circling around him, ready at a moment’s notice to swoop down and devour him whole.

He yanks his hand away.

Sunless Dusting Libraries

Henry should leave, he should wait until everyone is asleep and then silently leave, without a trace. As if he never existed in Alex's life, as if he never touched Alex's body, as if he never wanted only exist in his heart and mind.

Because that is what Alex deserves. Alex deserves someone who can love him out and proud, someone who is not shamed for his existence, someone as bright as him, not the pale starlight gleam Henry is.

But lying there on the pile of mattresses they piled together and called a bed- Henry can not even find it in himself to breathe, let alone get up and go. Betrayed by his own existence, once again.

It’s not that Alex hasn’t thought about kissing Henry before. Alex is bi, Henry is beautiful, and you don’t get through six years of almost dangerously codependent friendship without wondering once or twice what it might be to fall into one another’s bed. But the friendship is more important than anything else, so those thoughts fell to the wayside in favor of cultivating it.

But right now, in this moment, the friendship could catapult itself off the goddamned Grand Canyon and Alex wouldn’t notice because he’s just kissed Henry for the first time and they’re pulling apart when all he wants to do is dive back in. There’s laughter filling the air, crashing against the pound of his heartbeat in his ears, and he forces a smile, slapping Henry on the shoulder as Henry’s gaze slides over the crowd of onlookers, a wobbly smile forming on his lips.

His warm, soft lips. That Alex just kissed.

Alex closes his eyes. Maria is caressing his curls and has started to sing the lullaby Henry always sings to her—to them whenever they can’t sleep.

The lullaby Henry sang to them was the same lullaby his father, Arthur, sang to him when he was a kid. And that is when the realization hits Alex: Maria is doing the same thing Henry does to him whenever he is stressed and needs rest. Their daughter is copying Henry.

Alex is so touched and smiles.

“Papa, stop smiling and sleep,” she reprimands him.

“Okay, I’m sorry, princess.”

The last thing Alex remembers before sleep takes him is Maria’s little hand caressing his hair and a kiss on his cheek.

An eerie silence descends. Henry blinks. His mouth falls slightly open as he stares at Alex in disbelief. Eyes wide. “Christ,” he murmurs softly, his voice a mix of exasperation and wonder. “What?”

A certain realisation. An appendectomy. A game of "Rock, Paper and Scissors". What can possibly go wrong?

And Alex looks obscene, a filthy grin stretching his lips with his chin jutted into the air and his fist held high in the middle of the ring above his motionless opponent, the blood from his nose staining his flushed skin and a bit of his teeth, his half-lidded eyes locked in on Henry like a fixation: the predator and his prey.

Henry finds unexpected solace in the thrill of an underground haven, where status—and who he shares a bed with—doesn't really seem to matter. But the deeper he goes, the harder it is to pull away, and Henry's shocked to discover so much of himself where he'd least expected to find it.

He's not the one inside the ring, but he's only just finding out what it truly means to fight.

@myheartalivewrites: an AU that’s pretty close to canon in some ways: Alex (still a well known child of politicians) and Henry (still a prince) meet as students in Edinburgh. This story is sweet and gentle and heart wrenching at points, but also incredibly uplifting in Henry and Alex’s determination to be together no matter the obstacles. And the Scottish setting is gorgeous and really evocative.

@dot524: This firefighter AU is one of my favorite RWRB fics ever, and I’m glad I was able to follow it from WIP status to complete this month. Alex as a firefighter is irresistible (Henry thinks so too) and somehow these two feel so true to character even in a completely different context. There are so many fun scenes here - riding a bull, an airport scene, shenanigans at a fire station, sentimental piano playing - but none of them are forced. Truly a wonderful fic that I know I’ll be returning to again and again.

@wilmonsfolklore: seconding this one so so so much!! read it in one sitting and have been thinking about it ever since then. there are so many heartfelt and sweet conversations in it. everyone's so true to their character in such a different situation. can not recommend it enough

Providing a bit of my exes-to-lovers fic with absolutely no context.

Henry is in the biggest library on campus studying when someone approaches his table.  “Hey, do you mind if I sit?” Henry looks up to see a boy he recognizes from his Women’s Literature class.  “Of course,” Henry replies, gesturing to the empty seat across from him. He’s at one of the larger tables today, since all of the small ones were taken, and he doesn’t mind sharing. He goes back to his reading as the other boy gets his things out. “You’re Henry, right?” He looks up in surprise.  “Yes, Henry Fox,” he nods.  “I’m Aaron Green,” the boy offers with a small wave.

Karaokes were always the easiest way to loosen up a Henry Fox, even his favourite drink could never give him enough liquid courage to do so, but give him a mic and a dream and you'll have Henry in his element. (Alex is not entirely sure why he knows that, or still knows that; it's been over a year since they broke up.)

Hi. I saw this post asking for a fic that changed one's brain chemistry. Now there are a lot of fics I like; over 2000 bookmarked on ao3. And a lot of fics I love; I have 400+ of those fics tagged 'fave'. Of those 400, there are only around two dozen I would say legitimately changed me as a person. 1% changed the way I saw relationships and the world, changed the way I read and write. And I couldn't narrow it down to one - or ten - and didn't want to dump in OP's tags. So have this list of fics that permanently changed who I am as a person.

Warning: I love long fics, and some of these are the same specific tropes that I love or that really affect me personally (ex. arranged marriage). Expect angst, and especially angst with a happy ending. That said these fics are all objectively amazing.

Banshee In A Well - 43k, complete, DC, Tim Drake. Childhood trauma, childhood trauma, came back wrong/can't stop coming back! Tim is a little FREAK and I luv him.

straight on 'til morning - 102k, complete, DC, timkon/Kon-El. This is within the niche genre that for some reason appeals to me specifically, of characters having a LOT of feelings about sex and dealing with it poorly.

variations on a theme - 5k, complete, MCU, ironstrange. This is one of the fics that made me truly love ironstrange. Stephen sees through millions of possibilities and in doing so, falls in love with Tony. Evocative, beautiful, succinct.

The Art of Losing - 33k, complete, Red White and Royal Blue, firstprince. This fic made me cry. This fic BROKE MY HEART. And I WENT BACK TO IT. Multiple times! This is a breakup fic that breaks you down then puts you back together. You will come out different, and only you can say if it's for the worse or the better.

With so much of my heart (that none is left to protest) - 65k, complete, Red White and Royal Blue, firstprince. There are so many firstprince fics that essentially translate the events of the book into a different setting. And I love all of them. (My own fic, then fucking have me, also does this, self plug self plug self plug). I had to narrow this selection down to just one, and this is probably my absolute favorite.

You Don't Have To (Say Yes) - 192k, complete, Star Trek, spirk/Jim Kirk. This is within the niche genre that for some reason appeals to me specifically, of characters having a LOT of feelings about sex and dealing with it poorly (yeah, again).

THE MARRIAGE OF TRUE MINDS - 262k, complete, Star Trek, spirk. Star Trek arranged marriage epistolary fic. I read this 4 years ago, and I STILL think of a line from this fic constantly (we're aligned, we're aligned, we're aligned). If you don't read anything else for the rest of your life, read this.

DON'T THE WAVES PULL THE SAND? DON'T THE MOON PULL THE TIDES? - 58k, complete, Star Wars, finnpoe. I don't even go here. And yet. And yet. This is within the niche genre that for some reason appeals to me specifically, of characters having a LOT of feelings about sex and dealing with it poorly (yeah, AGAIN).

Not Part of the Plan - SERIES, 8 works, 337k, complete. Supernatural, destiel. This is an arranged marriage fic au series, that started with a oneshot pwp, and somehow grew into a sprawling, world and character building EPIC. And that to me is always a marker of quality. You KNOW it's good if the author couldn't stop themselves.

wander your own land - 379k, incomplete, Yellowjackets, shaunajackie and others. I told you I like long fics. Girl survival situationships, cannibalism, jealousy, cabin fever, hallucinations, trying to keep a fucking baby alive in some of the worst possible circumstances.

Infinite Variations of a Summer Day - 76k, complete, X-Men, Pietro Maximoff. I love Pietro, he is one of my favorite characters of all time, and this is such a great character fic. See Pietro slowly driven insane in a time loop that examines his relationships with himself, his team, his family, and his powers.
