I adore this site, a wonderful resource which provides Whiplash scenery details and notes. I especially appreciate the pictures of Fletcher’s living room and office, since we see little of him when he isn’t (literally or otherwise) “onstage.”
But can we talk about this leather couch? This fucking leather couch.
Oh, nothing but endless kudos to the set designers, because it is PERFECT. Fletcher’s large white chair, vaguely kingly and plush while still sidestepping anything as cute as “coziness” due to the lack of raised arms. Yes.
And next to it, the leather sofa, which is sleek and probably very good quality yet sort of... spindly looking, thin, stiff, no way to sit that is more comfortable than sitting up straight. Too small to sprawl on, and even if you could, the flat angle of the arms means it would be awkward to rest your head.
This couch is for guests. It is “nice.” It is not inviting. Have a drink while we talk, sure. Great. And now, with all due respect, get the fuck out.
So yes, as a reflection of Terence Fletcher, it’s superb.
For my perverted ficcing purposes, I want to yeet it out that window.
I posted at least one scene (note: links to an Explicit-rated story) taking place in that living room before I saw these pictures, and I probably have a few more in my drafts, written both before and after. The deleted scene from the film is shot from an angle which doesn’t show the setup too clearly.
You know what? I can work with that chair! It’s a little small for some activities, but it is well-suited for others!
But this couch is just so horribly un-fuck-on-able it breaks my shipper heart.
I pretty much have to headcanon that if Andrew started spending more time there, Fletcher would end up replacing it. Maybe he’d make up some excuse about how Neiman can’t be trusted with the good furniture, but it’s actually because he can’t fucking stand watching Andrew trying to contort his gangly, awkward body into a semi-comfortable position on it one more time.
Because in a fic, what is a piece of furniture-- nay, what is a room, if not a place for banging???
I ask you.

i’ve recently fallen down the rabbit hole that is neiman x fletcher and i’m just SO GLAD that i’m not the only one! i don’t usually feel shame for my trash ships but boy am i having a hard time justifying this one to my friends 😭 i decimated the ao3 tag in two days and i’m happy to see you’re active on tumblr!! hope you’re having a good day! 💖
I'd like to say "I have no shame," but I'm pretty careful about what I post in the Whiplash tag (almost nothing) because it's all people doing Reviews of a Great Film, whereas I'm fantasizing about the doomed relationship between a young man hurtling toward an early grave and his abusive daddy figure.
Roll in the garbage with me, my filthy anonymous friend.
