Well I finished! A version of a first draft of FLOAT. I talk more about the bare bones process here, but the point is! Milestone reached!

🌊🦑💋River’s POV💋🦑🌊

Before I can overthink and talk myself out of it, I move to the back of the boat. Rose leans aside to make room for me, and Aspen takes advantage of her moving out of the way to join me.

“We’ll be waiting right here for you when you get back,” she promises me. “You’re going to do fine.”

“Don’t touch the fish. Find the door. Bring it back,” I recite. “Easy. I’ve got this.”

Aspen takes my face in her hands and tips my head forward so she can meet her forehead with mine.

“Be careful,” she says quietly. “I love you.”

I tip my head back up to give her a kiss. She looks adorably surprised when it happens, and reaches towards me to give me another one. It’s a lovely parting gift, and I step off the boat with a smile on my face.

Sometimes writing is typing out “Accustomed as we are to the trials of these waters…”

and then thinking, Is is that how I’d talk if I’d been on an alien ocean planet for years?

Anyway now the sentence starts with “As accustomed as we are to the bullshit that happens around here”

River’s POV, freshly shapeshifted for the first time in front of Flint, the leader of the Oasis.

“You really think that that’s River?” Flint says as Aspen starts moving.

“You saw her transform,” she points out, nearly within arm’s reach. She is coming into sharper and sharper relief with every step, a vision of bravery and wit that clarifies with every passing second.

“I saw whatever parasite is inside her burst out now that it’s fully grown,” Flint argues desperately.

Aspen laughs again. She reaches out of hand towards me, and I wrap one of the tentacles that’s roughly the same size around it. Even though it’s the same width, I’m able to wrap around her arm two and a half times, the tip of it wiggling in the air by her shoulder.

“River, darling,” Aspen says, loud enough to be heard all the way back at the mast, “if that’s you in there, give the leader of the Oasis a little wave.”

As far as I’m concerned, she could call me darling and give me orders all day long. Never one to ignore a pretty lady’s request, I keep one squid eye focused on her face (now rendered in beautiful detail) and divert the focus of my other eye towards Flint. Once I’ve got a lock on the blob that represents him, I raise one of my largest tentacles up in the air. In the same approach I used when I was trying to flag down the Endurance, I move it from side to languid side through the air. An unmistakable wave.

As I’m bringing my large waving tentacle back down to rest on the deck of the ship, Aspen lifts another one and wrap it around her waist. Part of me wonders if she’s wanted to do that before, but most of me is pretty sure that she’s just showing off so Flint can’t pretend that she didn’t interact as much as she could.

It doesn’t really matter. I have an idea about how to take things one step further.

After all, I have tentacles as thick as small trees, and the new muscles to go with them. And I already have a grip on Aspen’s middle and on her arm. Those are both perfectly stabilizing points of contact. It’s easy work to tap on the shoulder with one of the daintiest tentacles, arrange one of the thickest into a tight loop, and start gently tugging and guiding her over to sit in the little seat that I made for her.

The smile she gives me when she figures out what I’m doing is radiant. If I could blush through squid skin, I would.

“Proof enough yet?” she calls out cheerfully across the deck as I lift her up into the air.

I love it when media shows a guy and a girl having a relationship that is GENUINE friendship.

Regardless of whether I also interpret them as a romantic couple or not, I believe we could benefit having more characters of the opposite sex that have a healthy, positive connection.
