Best language learning program for senior citizens free#
The best free app for learning a language is Duolingo, hands down. What's the Best Free App for Learning a Language? Duolingo is the best free language learning app, offering bite-sized interactive sessions. Let's look at some of the best language learning apps in more depth. If you're not into podcasts in the first place, you might get frustrated and give up.Ī few apps, including Lingoda, offer placement tests so you can find out which level is the most appropriate place for you to start. If you can understand about 80 percent of what's being said, that's right where you need to be. This is uncomfortable for many people, but it's another reason you need to explore all your options and language-learning apps and resources that match your skill level.įor example, podcasts are a great way to push yourself beyond your comfort zone. One of the hardest parts about learning a language is that if you succeed 100 percent of the time, it's not difficult enough. There are plenty of apps that teach only writing for Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Mandarin, Hindi, and other non-Roman scripts. In some cases, you might pick up two apps, one that focuses solely on reading and writing and another that teaches speaking and listening. Similarly, for languages with a script that's new to you, it's best to find an app that includes content for teaching reading and writing. Sign It ASL, an online course whose video lessons have the feel of a television show is extremely effective. For example, when learning American Sign Language, you really need either a live instructor or videos. Sometimes you need resources that are specific to the language you're learning. Not quite ready to converse? Try Yabla, a site that's flush with videos of native speakers, which can help you acclimate your ear and expand your vocabulary. Rype is similar but instead focuses on one-on-one tutoring in 30-minute sessions. Lingoda offers one-hour small classes and one-on-one sessions, all conducted over Zoom. If you're already an intermediate or advanced speaker, small group classes or one-on-one conversations with a tutor are excellent options. In that case, you might be better off starting with an audio-focused program, such as Pimsleur or Michel Thomas. Some people find that looking at written language trips up their pronunciation. Duolingo is especially good for practicing on the go, as is the study aid Quizlet. Add in a mobile app with more bite-sized content so you can refresh your memory in short bursts. Rosetta Stone and Fluenz are both exceptional at that. When you first start out, you might like a program that tells you exactly what to study for an intensive 30 minutes per day.

~Black Friday/Cyber Monday Language Deal~
Hey, guys!
My favorite language software, Fluenz, is having their annual Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale. This is the absolute best language software you will find and their Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals are the only large discounts they offer each year. I personally own their French program and love it. I personally am considering buying their German program this year. I’ve linked their website below.

———  BASICS! ♡
(PEN)NAME! ♡     hannah
PRONOUNS! ♡     she / they
ZODIAC SIGN! ♡     sagittarius sun, sagittarius moon, gemini rising (i say as if i know anything about astrology)
TAKEN OR SINGLE! ♡     single 🎉
———  THREE  FACTS! ♡
1! ♡     i knocked one of my front bottom teeth out on a swing set when i was about five. i’d seen a bunch of cartoons where kids hung upside-down by the knees on jungle gyms (like this) and thought it’d be so cool to do that on the metal cross bar of a swing set, but i fell backwards and threw my torso forward in a panic so i smashed my face off a metal bar instead! ended up moving the roots of my adult teeth so i had to get braces from first to third grade to keep my teeth from absolutely destroying my gums, then braces from sixth to eighth and invisalign when i was in college because my teeth were never actually straight rip
2! ♡     a lot of you probably know this by now but i’ve gotten super into candlemaking—i blend my own parasoy from pure soy wax and pure paraffin wax and make container candles in those little 9oz straight-sided jars everyone uses. i’m also a giant dork and blend fragrances based on popular culture (so, yes, i’ve made candles inspired by nbc hannibal 🤡). anyway it’s a long and expensive hobby (candles have to cure for two whole weeks before you light them and i’m incredibly impatient) and it’s taking me a while to totally perfect it, but it’s incredibly fun and i love candles.
3! ♡     i’m super into foreign languages but haven’t had the focus or dedication to learn any fluently. i took spanish classes / lessons from the time i was a kid until halfway through high school, when i finished the curriculum, but have since lost most of it. picked up italian a little in high school and took some classes in college, got half-decently conversational while i studied abroad in rome, but since lost it. learned a tiiiiny bit of german, norwegian, polish, and greek through duolingo and fluenz. studied latin and ancient greek in high school and college, but i never really got good at greek and my latin is slipping. i’d love to dive back into one or all of them but i can’t seem to commit long-term 🙃
———  EXPERIENCE! ♡
PLATFORMS USED! ♡   at the moment i’m using tumblr and discord! i started out rping on lotrplaza.com (which got resurrected recently as lotrfanaticsplaza.com god bless) and spent most of my time on invisionfree / jcink (sorry proboards, but they were superior), which i was super into for a while! used twitter veeeery briefly, skype once in a while, and i think email a couple times way back when?
———  MUSE  PREFERENCE! ♡
GENDER! ♡    i don’t really have a preference! i guess i’ve gravitated more toward male main chars recently (...i know) but i’ve also written/am also writing my fair share of women!
LEAST FAVOURITE FACE(S)! ♡    idk that i can list any off the cuff. i’m generally less likely to be enamored by super popular faces, and i’m always into a good obscure recast, but i don’t necessarily dislike any fcs...
MULTI OR SINGLE! ♡    more than happy to interact with either! for myself, i can only handle running a multi if it’s for characters from the same fandom/series/etc. i tried a legitimate multi once and lost my mind so kudos to all of you who run one lmao
———  FLUFF / ANGST / SMUT! ♡
FLUFF:    i do love fluff, but i’m not generally capable of writing straight fluff, or overly saccharine stuff. especially with hannibal, there’s always some element of angst or horror that comes along with it, so what’s fluffy or tender for him can often be read as somewhat horrifying to an outsider. that’s a super fun line to play with, though, imo!
ANGST:    huge fan!! i do get a little wary of overloading on content that’s straight heavy angst, because i do like to have a healthy mix, but i’m always into angst. and it generally makes its way, in some measure, into most of the stuff i write so!
SMUT:    depends! i almost never write it, mostly because i’m not super into smut for smut’s sake—i enjoy it with certain people/muses, but more those i’m comfortable with. honestly can’t remember the last time i actually wrote smut, but i’m not against it! it’s just not something i often go out of my way to seek out.
PLOT / MEMES! ♡    i love both!! i’m very shy and almost never hop into someone’s dms, so to initiate interaction, i frequently send memes. and i love answering them, too! it’s much easier for me than coming up with random starters. i also love plotting, but i’m very bad at just... coming up with ideas off the cuff. i love chatting about that plots and dynamics, but it generally comes easier to me if we’re engaging about our muses—discussing personalities, dynamics, etc. rather than just... ‘do you have any ideas?’ ‘not really do you?’ i’m kind of awkward and shy so it always works better for me if we just start off rambling about our / each other’s muses because imo that generally just leads to better engagement and idea-generating! also i’m horrible at just generally initiating conversation (it’s something i’m working on being better at but yeah)
tagged by :  @nezhnosts thank youuuu ♡ tagging :  @misidentity @cadisfly @mudwoven @roziver @shieldeus @dispatched and anyone who wants to!

Muslim parents in UK refuse nationwide flu vaccine drive 'because treatment is not halal'
'We have consulted the scholars and this is their view… we need another vaccine which is halal.'
Tumblr media
Muslim parents are reportedly refusing to allow their children to have a nasal flu vaccine because the treatment is not halal.
Concerns were first raised over the spray - Fluenz Tetra - containing pork gelatine last year, but the issue has been highlighted again ahead of a new nationwide drive.
At the time, the Vegetarian Society branded the use of the ingredient in three vaccines as 'disappointing', while the Muslim Council of Britain said the spray would only be permitted if there was no alternative and lives were at risk.
Next month, every healthy child between two and 10 in England will be offered Fluenz Tetra to increase herd immunity.
But uptake in areas with a high proportion of practicing Muslims is 'significantly lower' than the average, reports the Telegraph.
Dr Shuja Shafi, the chairman of the Muslim Council of Britain's research and documentation committee, said: 'We have consulted the scholars and this is their view… we need another vaccine which is halal.'
Last year Dr Shafi urged doctors to find a 'long-term solution' to the issue. Two other vaccines, MMR VaxPro and Zostavax, also contain gelatine.
An injectable version of the spray which does not contain pork gelatine, which is considered haram, exists but is currently only given to high-risk children.
The alternative is said to be 'less effective' as it does less to reduce flu spreading and can require two doses.
Dr Mary Ramsay, head of immunisation at PHE, told the Telegraph: 'Our first priority is to ensure that vaccines are safe and effective… PHE encourages parents to seek advice from their faith or community leaders to inform their decision.'
