OOC post
Hello again! I'm posting like I wasn't basically already on hiatus already, but I'm just here to make it more official. I'll be taking a step back for a while because of some unfortunate personal things going on, holidays, and my own mental health. I won't be going into detail about any problems I have here, of course. this blog, @1-ball-fortnite (although I barely posted there anymore), and @skull-commander-fn, will either be silent, or posts will be few and far between. However I may stay active on my main, if anyone would like to pop by and say hi I'm over at @grimmkrieger
Much love, I hope everyone stays safe and has a good holiday, ❤️ Grimm/Nomad

Decided to rewatch NATLA to properly form my own takes that’s been running through my mind: (I’ll have both things that I like and dislike.) Part 1
SPOILERS!
I like it like a friend from a hundred years ago:
First and foremost, NATLA predominantly consists of Asian American Pacific Islanders. Good for them for creating a version that is more in their lens and creativity.
The Bendiiing. All of the elements, except for Earth, are 10/10. I really want it to be more solid, especially on AangvsBumi. It’s not that bad though, so much better than…well u know. I’ll give it an 8/10.
I rewatched it with a Filipino dub and it’s good, 9/10. Aang VO was convincing as a kid, so either they’re a great actor or a great kid actor. The jokes (Sokka’s sarcasm) hits better on my mother tongue
"You're my friend. You will always be my friend.”
Avatar state under the ocean
The costume. The only one that I do agree with everyone else that lacks is Zuko’s scar. They should’ve put prosthetics on the eyebrow.
Zuko’s hair? Hello? They did a great job. Even though my sister and I sing Ariana Grande song whenever we see them swaying. It’s an integral part of his story, and I loved that they keep it. There’s an East Asian culture that indicates that kind of haircut as a punishment. I remember my History teacher taught me this in eighth grade but I forgot which it was, my bad. And the actor’s such a champ for having that hair IRL.
My favorite actor performances: Gordon (Aang) superb acting. Liz (Azula). Utkarsh (Bumi). Justin Wong (Chong/SecretTunnelguy) sounds exactly like the character. Made up for my delusional expectation that Dee Bradley Baker would be in this. Ken Leung (Zhao) pisses me off so much, and that means he’s doing a great job. Dallas (Zuko) & Iroh (Paul). DDK's(Ozai) a natural idk if that's acting /j
Was it established in the OG that Katara's intro is a folklore/legend? Because yeah, I don’t mind that it is considered that way in this version.
AAAAA, the Lieutenant Jee younger casting makes so much sense now! The 41st division is chef kiss. Zuko cryiiiing when he was being banished!? Dallas Lui ate!
THE HYBRID ANIMALS LOOOK SO GOOD. The ostrich horse blended well with whoever rides them. It doesn’t look CGI to me. MOMO HIS MOMONESS, MOMO OF THE MOMO DYNASTY
Any Zuko fight choreography (MY FAVORITE CHOREO DALLAS LOOKS FIIIRE). And Aang’s too (Oh hey).
Aang the Hype Man
The fallen Fire Nation ship behind Zukka fighting. (It’s in my notes idk why but I guess background details are a win)
Aang and Iroh's interactions
NATLA Zuko (I don’t think there’s much of a difference though with the OG lol, and it’s probably because the NATLA directors/producers like Zuko)
Camera direction
The Found Family Hug™, what Netflix can do well.
End scene of Episode 1, is very cinematic. I can’t believe TV shows have come this far. I hope employees are paid well.
The End Theme remains the saaame, and is added with cinematic effects as well.
The folly/sound effect at the start of Episode 2. Why is this the only episode with that flair?
Creating a grave for Gyatso.
How Ozai’s forced unity/being totalitarian is represented. Reminds me so much of our own government, it amuses me. I know it’s not directly referencing that though. It’s good that they show it early on I guess. With the Fire Nation culty greeting as well.
On a lighter note: THE AIR SPHERE/BALL whatevah, yes! More of this goofiness. How about instead of being inspired by GOT, NATLA should be inspired by Stranger Things in terms of fantasy + childhood simplicity balanced by this trauma they're going through. (Well, ST lacks worldbuilding cause it’s just normal Earth but anyway)
Kyoshi Takeoveeer. I hope Roku gets more screen time someday though. Pls pls pls.
They incorporated the OG character theme songs! Of course! The ones I noticed right away are the FireNation Siblings’. So if you watched OG Avatar and you watched the scene where a mysterious girl joins the infiltration of the FN Royal Palace, you’ll know who she is.
Sorry not sorry, Daddy Dae Kim is daddying. (Although he did catch me off guard in Zuko’s Agni Kai lmao.) The plot.
The Aang VS Zuko fight! A reference to the Fortune Teller fight. The team did so well.
Zuko The Master of Disguise Major In Stealing Clothes. Full-time Avatar researcher.
A fourth wall foreshadows Bumi’s OOC for this version. Jet’s "he’s not like he used to be" in line. I mean they did warn us.
Another 4th wall is the line “Things shouldn’t be here” referring to the prototype Fire Nation balloon.
Nice animation with the retelling of Two Lovers legend.
Lu Ten Funeral scene ate. That single teaaaar. I recommend everyone who loves the animation to watch this scene. To feel something idk AHAHAHAH.
The actors were convincing when interacting with CGI animals. Specifically the badger moles.
ZUKO AND IROH SCENES!
CGI’s great did not waste any money
In Katara’s flashback. She experienced this in her present form. And when she was so scared to go to the place where her mom was killed, she immediately changed back to her young self. Like, I wanted that so bad when I was watching the flashback. I thought, this shouldn’t be the present-day Katara. There should be a moment when she switches back to young again. And they did.
Big Iroh-like moment that makes you cry as an adult when Gyatso was reassuring Aang that the genoc*de wasn’t his fault, and shouldn’t blame himself. Ahh, and the subtle sadness as they say goodbye.
Random eye drawing from Zuko. He’s an artist AHAHAHAH. Okay, I forgot which episode. Sincerely, unreliable narrator.
Showing Zuko's scar when Aang says "Do you even know that lives are at stake".
Basically every scene/plot they 1 by 1 copy from the show. Did not disappoint (well, maybe because OG showrunners were there). Blue Spirit, Siege of the North.
Zuko’s room. I love me some character bedrooms. He’s like a TV Sitcom character for that.
Gaang teamwork scenes! It works and it's dynamic.
Hahn as an honorable man? Yes. I don’t like love triangles so much. I like me some camaraderie. And Ian (Sokka) acted well for feeling included and seen as Hahn recognized his value as warrior/intel.
Zutara fight scene.
Two points that I don’t know if I like but it makes me realize some stuff:
Meek Katara. I know there are specific plot points that Feisty Katara is needed. But she was always nurturing, so I think it makes sense she’s…meek? That Jet scene explains it. Maybe because I relate to her being a log AHAHAHAH. But yeah, uh, I do not, ironically, have strong feelings against that water down.
Angry Bumi. IDK how to feel about him tbh. I always think Bumi is…harsh like that. Almost scary. But yeah, he never blames Aang. Still, it doesn’t feel out of place here. He will return anyway so he’s not this one-dimensional character that is only angry at his friend (hopefully). I never thought of how Bumi would actually feel. And that he will be upset, and now it’s sad because that’s like your friend when you were twelve years old and you wonder where he’s been all this time, and if he’s alive. And..war..never made it any better to process that emotion. So, we got two versions, one that is cautious and then eventually welcomes him, and another who's completely angry and blames a literal kid that he does not know the pain (from the war). Too real, and I personally don’t mind.

HI ZU!!! HOW ARE YOU?!?
Thank you for believing in me I got a good mark on my most recent test :> I am sure the energy passed to the mark >:]]]] And you’re right abt meeting new ppl but my school is… VERY sports oriented and I am not, so most of the people in my classes I often can’t connect with. There are exceptions though, two specifically!! I go to their games because they are my pookies I love them :]
Also… l was abt to also judge/lh you for the Gojo fn skin but… I remembered I spent $90 on the MLP mobile game when I was 11 so… I can’t rlly say anything huh !!! Speaking of games though, that SV take is valid, it is so boring early on 😭 And in the later game it can get a little repetitive… I got so bored to the point of marrying and then divorcing all the guy bachelors just to see their divorcé dialogue 💀 I couldn’t do it to the girls because 1) I love women !! All ways!! 2) My friends threatened to stop talking to me if I did 💀 I feel like if Gojo played SV or any game with romanceable characters he would do the same… Idk if that says something abt him or me but it’s saying something…
Anyways, hope you’re doing well <3333
-🕊️
HI DOVE NONIE <3333 AY COMGRATS ON UR TEST!! ok i get u abt the sport oriented ppl omg i would be terrified too 💀 IM GLAD U GOUND SOME FRIENDS THO GOOD JOB LDMSJD
and stop stop u js gave ne such nostalgia THAT GAME WAS THE FUCKING SHIT. OMG do u rememver the BALL CATCHING MINI game AND THE APPLE CATCHING one ogmrodh i loved that game sm 😭
whats sv.. its late my brains gone uhh i hate acrobyms help

I'm 11, and I wanna play Baldur's Gate 3, Ghost of Tsushima, and God of War. (All rated M, ESRB stinks) Help me write an essay as to why I should be able to play those games. Hey guys, I'm 11, and my parents are strict, but flexible. They let me attempt to convince them to let me have abilities, (removing Parental Controls on FN, and similar stuff) The main way this works is via essay. (I have bad writing, so if I have good writing to get my point across, that helps) Here's my argument:Today, I watched almost all of Terminator 1 (we skipped past the nude scene halfway through for obvious reasons, but the beginning scene when Schwarzenegger spawned in from the lightning ball thingie)I watched Matrix 1-4, without skipping anything.I currently play COD Warzone, and beat 2 playthroughs of Shadow of the Tomb Raider (ps4. Great game, y'all should try it)I know what's real and what's not, and after seeing The Tomorrow War, (2020?) blood and gore do not affect me.I have played the Demo of Ultrakill, and thought nothing of all the blood.I am mentally sane enough to not pull off this bullcrap in real life, so I think these games are fine.It would be awesome sauce if people could use good writing skills to convey my point. Make sure to mention all of these, in a positive manner. Peace out, Jake Submitted November 11, 2024 at 06:20PM by __burpity__ https://ift.tt/LvX9Af8 via /r/gaming

5. The Hook Up by Kristen Callihan | 4.25*
<b>4.25 stars</b>
sooo I started watching nfl / college semis in december and I'm actually really enjoying it? who am i? e n way all that nfl obvi got me into the mood to read some good football romance and this one definitely scratched that itch
ngl the beginning had me worried a lil cos their interest was v instant with lil to base on and after their initial disastrous talk they spent a whole month not talking, and not even looking at each other (well more like Anna was <i>trying</i> to not look at him and failing epicly, while Drew was unashamed in his admiring) - but once they got to talking / & fuckin lmao / things really started rolling, I was living for their banter, their chemistry was off the charts and I just loved D&A sm
Drew was so gone for Anna since day 1 and Anna felt the same but tried so hard to resist, she had a bunch of hang ups, but her issues made sense and seeing her stumble but get back up stronger and willing to take a chance and fight for what they had was great to see
there were so many 🥺🥺🥺 moments, when she had a fight with her mom and went to watch his practice after and he consoled her then they went and started throwing the ball around, the you destroyed me, the I saw you the first time we met and haven't seen anyone since / haven't stopped looking at you, WHEN THEY FINALLY KISSED, the this means nothing without you, the scene in the hospital after his accident, the he's my home / when I find it ill never let it go / let's make our home together - just to name a few
as for her besties.. there was a better twin and his name was George, I said what I said. he was a solid bestie, his twin not so much... she had her moments here and there, but mostly she was just wrapped up in her own shitty rs with a lil fucker and she was v much projecting her own shit / issues at Anna and her rs with Drew
can I just say, I loved the trajectory of Gray and Anna's friendship sm? when they realised they were both ride or die for their man Drew, they really came together and I loved them sm
a solid football romance, with great characters and a roller coaster of emotions (and several smutty scenes, but not in a way that hurt he story)
I really liked the side characters too, can't wait to get read about Gray Gray and his bubblegum pink car driving text bff turned love of his life story (especially considering how much of a man hoe / rs phobe he's been in here)
and don't think I forgot about Dex either👀
a great start to the series, here's hoping it continues to slay🤞🏻
PS.: can i just say, I've read and enjoyed football romances before, but now that I've actually watched games, have a greater unserstanding of the sport and a vested interest that I haven't had before.. football romance just hits different now🤌
(audiobook on 2x
Narrators: I mean Teddy Hamilton 'nuff said, and the FN was great too)

13th May (Old May Day): Harriet is rescued
Read the post and comment on WordPress
Read: Vol. 3, ch. 3; pp. 216–219 (from “This little explanation” to “figure in a message”).
Context
We know that this occurs “the next morning” after the Crown Inn ball.
May Day was celebrated on the first of May; Old May Day, which retained a previous date for the holiday, took place later, due to the switch from the Gregorian to the Julian calendar in England in 1752. Festivities on May Day, which celebrates the beginning of spring, include the crowning of a “Queen of May” and dancing around a May pole that has been decorated with flowers; see Chambers, pp. 570–82.
Jo Modert also notes that today is Friday the 13th. Friday and the number 13 were both considered unlucky at this time; however, I am unable to find evidence of a superstition regarding the combination of the two before the end of the 19th century (see Roud).
Note that this section and write-up contain language used to refer to Travellers that is today widely considered offensive. On issues of nomenclature see Trumpener (FN 3, pp. 846–7). The section “Led Into Alarm” contains discussion of sexual violence. The sections “The Stuff of Romance” and “To Build a Nation” contain spoilers.
Readings and Interpretations
The Stuff of Romance
This section details the famous incident in which Harriet is “assailed by half a dozen children, headed by a stout woman and a great boy,” from a visiting “party of gipsies” (p. 217). The conventional reading of this episode holds that Emma’s “imaginist” tendencies lead her to view Harriet’s (really harmless) adventure as something out of an eighteenth-century romance.1 For Paul Fry, the incident shows Emma at work as “a maker of romance-plots” who wants the tale to be “elaborated into a Romance of the fullest possible proportions” (p. 135):
Perhaps the most notable interpolation in the novel is the “story” of the gypsies. Staple picaroons and agents of mystery in Romance (where they are especially serviceable in plots of mysterious parentage, like Harriet’s), the gypsies trespass into Highbury to remind us that they do not belong there. Fittingly, it is their romance-counterpart, Frank Churchill, who routs them while on an errand of secrecy about which he is obliged, as always, to prevaricate. This for what it is worth is Emma’s Romance of the Forest […]. This interpolation is as compressed as possible and wholly unelaborated; Frank Churchill’s rescue of Harriet makes up “the amount of the whole story” [p. 218]. (p. 134)
Similarly, Jillian Heydt-Stevenson writes that the ostensible threat and the “love arising from precipitous rescue[]” comprise one “previous literary narrative[]” that Emma “pilfers” in trying to fit events to the logic of sentimental novels (2015, p. 158). For Elaine Bander, Emma violates the precepts of the picturesque imagination by turning this “small incident” into a “tale of heroic rescue” (2016, p. 26).
William Galperin similarly argues that the group was never actually a threat to Harriet due to the demands of the picturesque, a genre “which aestheticizes nature, restricting the real in either art or experience to a partial, regulated version of itself” (p. 20): thus the picturesque “aestheticization” of the “gypsies […] demands that they be vanquished by a hero” (p. 19). According to the “limits” of picturesque narrative, “it is completely unacceptable […] for gypsies to materialize in the flesh out of nowhere, especially in surroundings that are themselves picturesque” (p. 21). This improbability thus must be “tempered” into “the more ‘natural’ fantasy of marital union authored by Emma herself”; “Emma’s more ‘natural’ narrative” “contains” the “threat” that the nomadic group pose to the world of Emma by giving them a narrative function in furthering a naturalized marriage plot between Frank and Harriet. Her imagined plot “projects the gypsies’ instrumentality in a […] social hegemony that requires […] that the gypsies be taken seriously: both as the extraordinary ‘other’ that the community, like the picturesque, defines itself against; and as a potentially ordinary, and more subjugated, other that the community, like the picturesque, wards off by somehow containing or appropriating” (p. 21).2
In forming this romance plot, of course, Emma has missed another. Per Roger Gard, Emma’s plot causes her “to miss the actual exciting clue in the incident which is Frank’s visit to the Bates’s, lamely explained as the return of a ‘pair of scissars’” (p. 194). To boot, there is another romance plot “before her” (p. 216) of which Emma as yet knows nothing: Harriet’s “eyes were suddenly opened” only partly by Mr. Elton’s “evil feelings” (p. 216), the rest of the work presumably having been done by Mr. Knightley’s attention, a fact which will come back to vex Emma later.
To Build a Nation
Other critics place more emphasis on the status of the “trampers” (Emma p. 217) as a racial or ethnic ‘other,’ reading this incident as one that serves a national or nationalist function in emphasizing Harriet’s Englishness and racial purity against an ethnic out-group. Michael Kramp, for example, argues that “Austen’s use of the alien dark-skinned gypsies in juxtaposition to the native White woman allows the novelist to accentuate the Englishness of the latter by stressing the foreignness of the former” (p. 148):
Like other modern states, England had to generate its “Englishness” and its “native” citizens by racializing populations. […] Harriet’s encounter with the Romani allows Austen to illustrate how this citizen-building process helps solidify an English national identity. The novelist distinguishes the “Black” migratory gypsies from the White residents of Highbury, establishing an English race by separating it from an outside element; this created national race then effectively represents the “Englishness” that presumably defines its members. Harriet’s involvement in this scene, as a young, anonymous, and native member of this local community, highlights her importance as a national resource: she has the power to reproduce English culture and the English race, but she must be safeguarded from the nomadic lifestyle of the gypsies and schooled in the legacy and lore of her nation.
[...] Harriet appears as the anonymous and archetypal Anglo-Saxon female, complete with the traditional physical qualities [“a fine bloom,” “blue eyes,” and “light hair”] of the ostensibly ancient race of England. This initial sketch of the parlor boarder […] exposes an important similarity between the young White woman and the gypsies. Both are “natural;” neither Harriet nor the Romani have a definitive origin or social position, but the former’s Whiteness visually differentiates her from the latter’s swarthiness. Emma documents the efforts of Knightley and the heroine to uphold Harriet as a source of “natural” Whiteness, while the Romani become vilified as mysterious Black outsiders. Austen ambiguously depicts the Romani outside Highbury as “all clamorous, and impertinent in look, though not absolutely in word” (300). She stresses their shocking effect rather than their visual appearance; they represent a jarring and clear difference that recalls earlier historical treatments of the gypsy race. (pp. 150–1)
Similarly, Deborah Nord writes that Austen draws upon contemporary racial literary tropes in “us[ing] the gypsy scene in Emma to suggest the cultural borders not only of provincial community but of femininity” (p. 193):
Harriet, the fair, blue-eyed ingenue Emma has chosen as a suitable lover for Frank Churchill, returns from her ordeal leaning on Churchill’s arm, looking pale and shaken, and faints. Her subsequent account of meeting with a party of “clamorous” gypsies (in reality a group of children) while walking with a friend on the Richmond Road soon circulates throughout the town as a drama of terror to be savored and retold. For Emma, of course, this appears as a drama of romance and chivalry […].
Austen seems to be commenting on the insularity of Emma’s world, a world in which stories of danger and romance result from the mildest contact with figures whose meanings themselves derive from story and myth. Emma is not, of course, alone in inventing “imaginist” readings of Harriet’s brush with thievery and worse. The community of Highbury, shuddering with a frisson of “happiness” in contemplating the “frightful news,” is both geographically and imaginatively defined by the incident and its response to it [p. 219]. But the episode also touches obliquely on the triangle of Harriet, Frank, and Jane because of the gypsy’s literary associations with the plot of murky origins and the rivalry between fair and dark heroines. (pp. 193–4)3
Led Into Alarm
Nord’s reference to “Harriet’s brush with thievery and worse” refers to a strand of physical threat that some critics identify in the description of Harriet’s adventure. Frances L. Restuccia argues that the text dramatises a phobia of “impending rape” (the phrase is Nancy Armstrong’s) with Harriet’s attack: “Harriet is terrified, which may also seem excessive unless one realizes that at some level she, and the text, are worried about the ‘great boy’ turning her into ‘a stout woman’” (1994, p. 458).
Similarly, Wendy S. Jones writes that “[t]he threat of rape is the unspoken danger here, a threat conveyed by the image of the purse, associated with female genitalia, and by the sinister description of the gypsies as a ‘gang demanding more.’ This ‘more’ could be interpreted as more money, but also as more than money” (2008, p. 326). Celia Easton writes:
Jane Austen echoes some of the common mythology of Romani people believed in the eighteenth-century and lingering in some perceptions today: that transient bands of outsiders disturbed the social order, often with criminal malice. Harriet’s response to the group of children, a “stout woman,” and a “great boy,” however, is not the fear of losing her purse. Harriet has felt cramps from dancing, so unlike her walking companion, Miss Bickerton, she cannot run away. Her reaction is more like a rape victim: she is “absolutely powerless.” She views the group as “assailing” her. She begs them “not to want more [money], or to use her ill” (360-61). When Frank Churchill happens upon the scene, Harriet Smith “cling[s]” to him with the intensity of Harriet Byron clinging to her rescuer, Charles Grandison. Indeed, Emma herself, in hearing the story, turns it into a romance narrative […]. (n.p.)
Of course, the view that the scene contains language that hints at the threat of sexual assault, and the view that the novel does not see the “band” as a genuine threat, are not mutually exclusive. Easton notes that Emma, the “rationalist,” does not take the threat seriously, and that in fact the literary strategy of Emma does not permit a threat of rape to be genuine: rather, it is “the language of such violence [that] creates a good part of the tension of this novel” (ibid., emphasis mine).
Claudia Johnson, however, unlike the critics whose views are above detailed, sees this incident as highlighting a “real problem” that besets the unmarried gentlewomen in Emma:
Emma is set into motion by the distinctively feminine boredom Emma suffers after Miss Taylor’s departure. The merest “half a mile” [vol. 1, ch. 1; p. 2] between Hartfield and Randalls spans an impossibly huge chasm […]. Having “ventured once alone” to Randalls, Emma deems it “not pleasant” [vol. 1, ch. 4; p. 15] for “solitary female walking” [vol. 1, ch. 2; p. 10], and the incidence of gypsy assaults upon unprotected schoolgirls proves her uneasiness to be more than an excess of delicacy. By showing how a matter as simple as getting from one nearby house to another to see a dear friend is for Emma almost prohibitively complicated, Emma tactfully shows conditions which make even “the best blessings of existence” [vol. 1, ch. 1; p. 2] moot. (p. 139)
Footnotes
“Romance” here does not mean “romantic” in the modern sense of romantic love or eros, but is a genre of book that makes frequent use of the improbable and fantastical and is commonly contrasted with the more realist “novel.”
Galperin’s argument is not that Austen thereby accords with the standards of the picturesque, but that she stretches them: “Austen’s familiarity with the picturesque […] provoked her not only to a different kind of realism [than the “partial” kind mandated by the picturesque], but to a realism directed to a weakening or transformation of the very standards of probability […] which picturesque theory and realistic practice so-called alternately inculcate and uphold” (pp. 20–1). On Emma’s Frank/Harriet plot as literary see also McMaster (pp. 33–4).
On the representation of Romani in nineteenth-century English literature see also Trumpener (on Emma pp. 867–9); Yahav-Brown; Mohammad (on Emma pp. 655–61).
Discussion Questions
What literary, psychological, and racial or ideological role does Harriet’s misadventure play in the narrative of Emma? Do contemporary (that is, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century) depictions and ideas of Rroma and other nomadic groups have any relevance in analyzing this episode?
Do you think that this scene was intended to carry an undertone of sexual danger?
Does this incident prove that “solitary female walking” is actually dangerous in the world of Emma?
