On the topic of ‘bad mascot horror video games for kids’ the exception to the rule (or rather, something that understood the assignment) would be My Friendly Neighborhood.

I don’t want to spoil anything if you haven’t booted up the game before, but just…don’t be fooled by jumpscare compilations or the character design. From the opening cutscene this game grabs you by the fucking throat. The mechanics have thought put into them, the voice acting is top notch, and christ the fucking story - a complete story, one that has an end that isn’t promised in future ‘chapters’ or left ambiguous.

Yes, it has jumpscares from goofy muppet monsters, but they’re not cheap tricks. Once you learn how the game works they’re easy to avoid or at the very least anticipate - not to mention they’re survivable with the healing mechanic. And just when you think the scares are done, when you’re well into the game and have all the tools you need to navigate around potential jumpscares, the final act dunks you into the deep-end with the actual horror and nightmare fuel puppets.

I’m not sure how much the game as a whole qualifies as ‘horror,’ but it’s certainly being lumped in with the Whatever-Mascot Horror Game of the Week genre. Which is a shame because My Friendly Neighborhood is leagues ahead of those other games. It has more in common with survival horror than it does with mascot horror in terms of gameplay and tropes. It’s literally just the ‘monster’ designs leading people to assume its another Poppy Playtime clone complete with half baked story and repetitive, unimaginative gameplay loops. And that’s so far from the truth -

anyway hi this is clemont uriel my son (they/he/spark). i gave him all my stress about mundane things and made it Worse.

often wears a blindfold because permanently glowing red eyes from human experimentation are a pretty identifiable trait. this gets more visible further into the story (eventually just entirely red eyes with no whites with rhombus/diamond shaped pupils faintly visible) so blindfold becomes a basically permanent feature. eyes get at least mildly fucked up because of this.

has freckles basically everywhere, not just the face. some of them changed shape after they got light magic from awakening. (shape in question is light magic's icon) light part of hair is naturally like that, hair there is thinner and overall less of it grows in the same amount of head area compared to the darker hair. (fact: repeated hair pulling can cause hair loss)

most inaccurate outfit ever btw. overall a weird combination of multiple half formed design ideas. imagine a significantly more wizard looking outfit. and those fuckass metal claws only on one hand, dagger in the other. (more damage vs precise attacks. also vague parallel w Peacekeeper wearing one of Theos' armour gauntlets after AA). undecided on what long range weapon i should give him. hair is shorter,, like top of to mid ear length and not shoulder length. however this is the most accurate hair i could find.

long sleeve grey turtleneck + matching gloves (right hand with shiny grey claws) + very specific jacket i am still making into roblox clothes + shiny grey pauldrons that cover shoulders, armpits and slight part of upper arms and connected cape with some kind of space design on the inside + matching the cape, big fucking wizard hat + shiny grey dagger in left hand. lots of dangling and/or draping parts in the outfit compared to solstice's outfit being lots of somewhat tight layers. (both get alternate outfits for warmer/colder weather but one version is always their main design). most of the armor stuff is hidden under the clothes or just part of the clothes via hand waving explanation of enchanted fabric bc armour is HEAVY!! (solstice is the one who gets a fuckton of visible armour) unsure on the shoes but i might make them steel-toed for more grey details.

colour placement is something i always get weirdly focused on when it comes to ocs. abnormally so.. esp w characters who come in a set like thse two. i am a sucker for parallels.

solstice gets a lot more grey in her design but clemont gets a lot more of the space motif in his. (also might change the accessory gradient in solstice's design to be dark purple -> magenta -> light pink instead of green -> blue -> purple -> pink, silly cauldron/potion bag gets ominous orange glow emanating from the inside. clemont will probably have mostly green with some teal and yellow. might make orange their 'shared colour' as is tradition for me to give all my ocs who form into a duo whether by design or by forcing me)

spell names are all music themed!!! unsure on what instrument to make him play tho...

Please note, I am currently rereading the story but I may misremember something, feel free to let me know if I did.

I was just thinking how sad the story of the P4 is. Like, they spent their school years being brainwashed that "the headmaster's will is absolute", that whatever he choses it is the correct choice and they should not question it.

Because of that they end up committing a crime and later being kicked out.

Then, almost immediately they end up in the Sphere Music Hall. I say almost immediately because Edward says a month after the school events Lizzie is kidnapped but correct me if I'm wrong. They were likely in their most vulnerable state (just being kicked out of their "home" after years of indoctrination) and they casually end up in a situation that is honestly so similar.

A location where people follow blindly what someone say, but this time it is the stars instead of the headmaster.

Then there is the vice-head master that is the one actually having contact with them most of the time, and the role now falls on Blavat.

Plus they were extremely smart with this and basically they have them back their right, it is likely not a coincidence that they are called Spotlight 4. They are, yet again, put in the position under the spotlight, where people admire them and almost worship them, like they were as the P4. They are put again under the spotlight. Just like they were before.

Violet being forced to donate blood could even fall under a "fag/drudge's duty" with some little manipulation, triggering the actions/words he had to follow for years before becoming a prefect.

They are all again convinced that what they are doing, they are doing it for the best outcome.

Technically they also have the Midnight tea party, since there is the exclusive meeting of the stars where they get the blood that you can have access only if you have the bracelet.

They are divided in 4 groups (stars vs dorms) each with their own simbol (number of stars vs different flowers), of which they end up being the representative (prefect vs main singer). And they get the fancy outfit (special flowers vs special suit).

They litteraly fell for the exact same scheme, just with a slightly fancier mask.

This becomes even worst if Undertaker directly contacted them. Because then we can still apply that "the headmaster's will is absolute" and so they followed him because he was the headmaster.

Undertaker and Blavat are forcing their past position on them yet again using similar means to the one they were subjugated by previously. They are paralleling their past to once again manipulate them, since it already worked. And this is heartbreaking.

I feel like crying about them.

I love playing Étoile because she doesn’t know what is and isn’t normal so every once in a while she’ll mention something that makes everybody else in the party go “oh my god this poor girl’s mother was so emotionally manipulative and neglectful it’s unreal” and meanwhile Étoile is just like “of course, she’s literally the only person I saw or spoke to for 25 years so I guess that’s just a normal way for people to be”
