While I’m mumbling in tags about prequel trilogy costumes, please excuse me while I two-minutes-hate about what a wasted opportunity Padme’s costuming was.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s gorgeous. Everything fits perfectly, which is not to be taken for granted. A lot of the fabrics were custom-made, some with hundreds of hours of hand labor on a single piece. Remember, we’re in the mid 90s and 3D printing tech doesn’t exist in a recognizable form yet. A lot of the surface treatments, accessories, and jewelry are from one-of-a-kind antique/vintage finds, and that attention to detail and realness and richness definitely is communicated onscreen.

Here’s the thing though: the purpose of costuming is to support the narrative and the characterization, and Padme’s costuming is doing none of that. All we can tell about her from looking at her clothes is that she’s pretty and extremely wealthy. The historical and cultural inspirations that each gown draws from, the colors, the fabric choices, the silhouettes are so way the heck all over the map (lets do Mongolian here, Japanese there, Elizabethan with a side of West African, an Edwardian wedding dress, a random 1920s Fortuny gown, et cetera) that it’s impossible to infer anything about Naboo culture, her professional ambitions, or her history and private feelings.

A lot of times she shows up to a scene in clothes that are super contextually inappropriate- a midriff-baring silk top and devore velvet cape in the Jundland Wastes of Tatooine, a leather corset and lace fishtail skirt to tell the dude who fancies her that this isn’t going to work out. Just...what. We laugh about how impractical the prequel-era Jedi rig is, but they had a consistent enough palette of fabric, color, and silhouette that they were legible as an organization with particular, consistent values.

Just, we went from an OT that was wildly successful with a shoestring costuming budget, to twenty years later having more money than God, very few creative limitations...and using that to make empty spectacle, and to refuse any opportunity to substantively characterize the one focal female character of the piece, who already was done dirty in so many other ways. I’m gonna die mad about this.

It was good the Astral understood that he supposed, but at the same time, it made no difference. Noctis had every disadvantage. Fortunis had all the power, he was a God, and what was Noctis? An offering, practically sold off to the Astral in return for good fortune. His father had been against it, of course, unwilling to use his own son as a bargaining chip.

Seeing that the King wouldn't budge with this decision, the Council had deemed Noctis the weak link, applying pressure to an already insecure young man. It would be an honour to wed an Astral. He would be doing his kingdom a great service. His father could always have another heir. The whispered words kept coming until the Prince had had enough.

He told his father that, if Fortunis would have him, he would go along with the marriage. His father hadn't been able to back down at that point without being accused of forsaking his people despite his son's willingness.

So there he was, alone with the Astral for the first time, and very much missing home.

"Why would you want to be my friend? Why did you even agree to this marriage? My Kingdom receives good fortune, but what do you get out of marrying a mortal?"

The words weren't spoken with any venom. He was just curious. Anybody in his situation would be. How did the Astral benefit?

Fortunis smiled. The questions just what he hoped from the young prince, the young man who neither cowered before him nor spat in his face. 

“You are right to believe that such an offer would usually go ignored or punished,” He agreed. “In fact, the greed motivated council members shall suffer greatly in order to balance the act of blessing the nation with fortune. The loss of their fortunes and title’s being what ultimately brings wealth to the king and nation.”

He offers his hand to Noctis, to lead him to his work chamber. A beautiful, sunlight dappled porch, hung with the tapestries of history all facing an old fashioned loom in the center. It seems polite, to show the young man his work as they say together. Something no other mortal would get to see.

“See this thread that seems to shine like gold? It is yours,” He said. “It is a soul that naturally pulls at the threads of fate, and as such catches my eye. In your case, I was interested enough that I wished to get to know you. But as I am a god and you are currently a mortal, the only way to do so properly was through marriage. My benefit is a companion.”

He gives Noctis a smile. Hoping to seem friendly. He knows it is an unpleasant situation.

“You may visit with others any time you wish, so long as you return at the end of the day,” he said. “As you are bound to me, so you are bound to my realm. You will become ill if you stray for too long.”

Eine vegetarische Institution in Barcelona – das Biocenter. Seit 1980 gibt es eines der ältesten vegetarischen Restaurants in Barcelona bereits. Wer jetzt Angst hat, dass das Restaurant und die Speisen ein wenig eingestaubt sind, muss sich keine Sorgen machen. Die Speisekarte ist modern inspiriert und absolut am Puls der Zeit. So gibt es aktuell zum Beispiel eine vegane Poké Bowl, Tapas, Burger oder ein veganes Tartar, frische Salate und vieles mehr. Ein Großteil der Speisen ist vegan, ein Teil glutenfrei. Sowohl auf der Website findet ihr eine aktuelle Speisekarte, als auch die Möglichkeit Plätze zu reservieren oder ein Blick ins Restaurant zu werfen. Der Service ist nett und zuvorkommend und auch eine englische Speisekarte sind selbstverständlich. Gerade am Wochenende solltest du hier am besten reservieren!

Falls du in Barcelona unterwegs sein solltest und Lust auf etwas Süßes hast, schau unbedingt beim Chök vorbei, wirklich! Die kleine Schokoladen- und Backwarenmanufaktur hat aktuell drei Filialen in der Stadt. Dort findest du neben selbst hergestellter Schokolade und Pralinen, vor allem auch fantastische Berliner, Donuts und Cronuts. Ein großer Teil davon auch rein vegan. Alle Produkte kannst du im Online-Shop vorbestellen oder dir so einen hervorragend Eindruck vom Angebot verschaffen. Wir waren hier gleich mehrfach zu Besuch und haben uns durch das Angebot probiert. Super freundliches Personal und fantastische Donuts. Dazu guter Kaffee und toll eingerichtete Läden. Ein absolutes Highlight für alle Schleckermäulchen!

Die Sesamo Bar war mal ein Geheimtipp in Barcelona, hat sich in den letzten Jahren aber immer mehr zum Veggie-Hot-Spot gemausert. Eher unscheinbar und eigentlich auch eine Bar, gibt es dort spannende, vegetarisch-saisonale Küche. Da der Laden nicht sehr groß ist, sollte man idealerweise einen Platz reservieren. Ein festes Menü gibt es nicht, dafür eine wechselnde Karte, die ihr auf der Facebook-Seite einsehen könnt. Die Bar selber bietet vor allem eine großartige Auswahl an Gin Tonics an. Auch hier lohnt sich ein Besuch ganz ausdrücklich!

Der ein oder andere kennt bestimmt das Teresa Carles in Barcelona. Eines der bekanntesten vegetarisch & veganen Restaurants der Stadt. Entsprechend ein wenig hochpreisiger und immer sehr gut besucht. Neben dem Teresa Carles gibt es mittlerweile mit dem Flex & Kale einen Ableger in der Stadt, der sich vor allem auf Frühstück und einfaches Essen zum Mittag und Abend konzentriert hat. Darüber hinaus gibt es dort eine große Auswahl frisch gepresster Säfte sowie Drinks und Snacks to-go. Der Laden ist modern eingerichtet und lädt zum Verweilen und Schlemmen ein.

Maoz Falafel

In Barcelona (oder allgemeiner in Spanien) essen gehen kann ganz schnell mal etwas länger dauern und umfangreicher werden, als man es im ersten Moment vielleicht geplant hat. Häufig gibt es sowohl zum Mittag als auch Abendessen Menüfolgen, die angeboten werden und ruck-zuck hat man 2 Stunden im Restaurant verbracht. Wenn es wirklich einmal schnell gehen soll, kann ich den Maoz Falafel in der Innenstadt empfehlen. Für knapp 5 Euro bekommt ihr dort einen Falafel oder noch besser einen Falafel-Salat, den ihr euch selber nach Lust und Laune füllen könnt. Dazu gibt es jede Menge vegane Soßen, Dips und Toppings. Alles super lecker und bestes Fast Food. Gerade am Abend entsprechend gut besucht und ein bisschen voll. Besser gut & günstig satt werdet ihr in Barcelona wahrscheinlich nicht.

Vegesana – Menjar Vegetaria Restaurant

Natürlich gibt es auch in Barcelona viele asiatische Fast Food Imbisse und Restaurants. Leider ist es häufig nicht einfach zu erkennen, ob es dort vegane Gerichte im Angebot gibt oder diese entsprechend ausgezeichnet sind. Wenn du dir darüber keine Gedanken machen möchtest, bist du im Vegesana – Menjar Vegetaria Restaurant genau richtig. Eine große Karte mit allerlei asiatischen Spezialitäten mit Tofu, Seitan, Pilzen, Dumplings, Suppen, Currys und vielen mehr. Eben genau, was man im Vorhinein erwartet und sich wünscht. Besonderheit im Vegesana ist, dass alle Speisen vegetarisch sind. Darüber hinaus sind alle veganen Gerichte auf der Speisekarte deklariert bzw. der Service ist auf entsprechende Fragen eingestellt. Nicht vom äußeren Eindruck beeinflussen lassen und einfach die leckeren asiatische Gerichte genießen.

La Fábrica

Mehrmals sind wir an den verschiedenen Läden von La Fábrica vorbeigelaufen und haben erfreut festgestellt, dass es dort auch drei vegane Sorten Empanadas gibt. Leider gab es beim ersten Besuch keine der Sorten mehr und am darauf folgenden Tag nur eine von drein. Die Empanadas selber haben gut geschmeckt. Die Füllung aus getrockneten Tomaten und Aubergine war aber nicht unser Geschmack. Gerne hätten wir die anderen beiden Varianten probiert, die es aber zumindest an den Tagen nicht gabt. Da die Läden zentral in der Innenstadt liegen, kommt man hier auf jeden Fall einmal vorbei und kann schauen, welche Sorten es gibt. Bei Gelegenheit auf jeden Fall mal probieren. Preislich sind die Empanadas ziemlich günstig und zum Beispiel super geeignet um etwas zum Essen zum Strand mitzunehmen.

Pizza Paco

Eher zufällig sind wir, nach dem es leider keine Empanadas mehr für uns gab, an der Pizza Paco vorbeigekommen. Am Rande der Altstadt, an einem schönen Platz, gelegen, gibt es hier wie der Name erraten lässt Pizza! Auf der Karte, die es vor Ort auch in englischer Sprache gibt, finden sich auch verschiedene vegane Pizzen. Wir haben vor dem Besuch kurz bei Instagram geschaut, wie diese so ausschauen und uns dann entschlossen dort zu essen. Auf jeden Fall eine richtige Entscheidung!

BarCeloneta Sangria Bar

Eine vegane Tapas Bar in direkter Nähe zum Strand mit Sangria und Craft Beer?! Ganz klar ein absolutes Muss bei unserem letzten Besuch in Barcelona. Neben klassischen Tapas wie Pilzen, Oliven und Antipasti gibt es in der BarCeloneta Sangria Bar auch Burger, Paellas und eine große Auswahl an Süßspeisen. Alle Gerichte haben gut geschmeckt, sind im Preis-Leistungsverhältnis aber recht teuer. Das trifft auch auf die Getränke zu. Vermutlich ein wenig der Lage in Strandnähe geschuldet, waren wir dann ob des hohen Preises zwar gut satt aber ein wenig enttäuscht.

Markthallen

Du hast bestimmt schon einmal vom Mercat de la Boquerioa auf der Ramblas gehört. Die bekannteste Markthalle Barcelonas steht bei vielen Touristen auf jeden Fall auf dem Programm. Neben vielen Fisch- und Fleischständen gibt es dort vor allem auch jede Menge Händler, die frisches Obst und Gemüse anbieten. Seit ein paar Jahren gibt es dort auch eine riesige Auswahl an frisch gepressten Säften, Obstschalen und vieles mehr. Alles direkt auf die Hand und zum Mitnehmen.

Neben dem Mercat de la Boquerioa, findest du in Barcelona aber auch viele andere (kleinere Markthallen) mit einem tollen Angebot an Lebensmitteln. Frisches Obst, Gemüse und Backwaren findest du so ohne Probleme.

Veritas

Gerade die Innenstadt in Barcelona ist natürlich sehr stark auf Touristen eingestellt und eng bebaut. Entsprechend gibt es dort nur wenige größere Supermärkte. Vor allem reihen sich hier Kioske und kleinere Tante-Emma-Läden aneinander. Sollte man spezielle vegane Produkte suchen, muss man am besten einen entsprechenden Bio-Supermarkt aufsuchen. Ein tolles Angebot gibt es im Veritas, von dem es in der Innenstadt verschiedene Filialen gibt. Dort findest du eine tolle Auswahl an veganen Backwaren, Kühlprodukten wie veganer Joghurt, Pflanzendrinks und vieles mehr. Auch Tofu, Wurst- und Fleischalternativen findest du dort. Außerdem natürlich frisches Obst und Gemüse und alles, was man für den Tagesbedarf benötigt.

Vega Raw Organic Barcelona

Ganz spezielle Wünsche, vor allem in Hinblick auf rohköstliche Zutaten und Lebensmittel, findest du im Vega Raw Organic Barcelona. Der kleine Laden beherbergt auch gleichzeitig ein Cafe mit verschiedenen Speisen, Getränken und Snacks. Dort findest du zum Beispiel Nahrungsergänzungsmittel, verschiedene Proteinprodukte und vieles mehr. Falls du einmal beim Biocenter (siehe oben) vorbeischaust ist der Laden gleich gegenüber.

Spar

Eine gute Anlaufstelle, für den täglichen Einkauf sind die Filialen der Supermarktkette Spar (das gilt eigentlich für ganz Spanien oder auch Italien). Im Stadtgebiet von Barcelona findest du jede Menge Filialen. Häufig auch an bzw. in Tankstellen, sodass die Öffnungszeiten häufig sehr lang sind.

Treffen mit einem Zeitzeugen

Am Nachmittag von Tag 4 trafen wir uns mit Pere Fortuny am Gedenkort Fossar de la Pedrera. Dieses Massengrab ist Teil des Montjuïc-Friedhofes und birgt von ca. 4.000 Opfern der franquistischen Repression die sterblichen Überreste. Die Diktatur Francos hatte Spanien fast 40 Jahre lang fest im Griff, sie kam erst 1977 zu ihrem Ende. Der 85-jährige Fortuny hat eine persönliche Verbindung zu diesem Ort und teilte seine Geschichte mit uns.

Die Treppen, welche zu der großen Fläche des Gedenkortes führen, wurden Treppen im KZ-Mauthausen nachempfunden und brachten damit eine bedrückende Stimmung beim Betreten der Grabstätte. Die Stelen am oberen Teil der Treppen erklärten in der ersten Reihe die Geschichte. Die zweite Reihe der Stelen trug die Namen der zwischen 1939 und 1952 in Barcelona Erschossenen.

Die Abfolge der Geschehnisse war aus der Erzählweise von Fortuny leider nicht vollkommen herauszufinden. Dennoch soll hier ein grober Abriss festgehalten werden.

Pere’s Geschichte

Pere Fortuny ist der Sohn eines Mannes, der in dieser Gedenkstätte begraben wurde. Der Vater Joseph Fortuny war Konditor und der republikanische Bürgermeister von Mollet del Vallés, nördlich von Barcelona. Als nach dem Bürgerkrieg Anfang 1939 hunderttausende Menschen vor den siegreichen Putschisten in Richtung Frankreich flohen, befand sich unter ihnen auch Joseph. Nach nur 15 Tagen beendete dieser seine Ausreise, wie viele andere auch. Grund dafür war das Versprechen Francos, sie hätten nichts zu befürchten, wenn sie nichts verbrochen hätten. Wie jedoch zu erwarten war, wurde er direkt beim Grenzübertritt festgenommen und in ein Gefängnis in León gebracht. Seine Familie setzte sich dafür ein, dass er in ein Gefängnis näher an der Heimat verlegt wird. Als Joseph jedoch nach Barcelona verlegt wurde, wurde er sofort zum Tode verurteilt.

Bei diesen franquistischen „Prozessen“ wurden bisweilen zwanzig Menschen gleichzeitig verurteilt, ohne das Recht auf einen Anwalt gehabt zu haben. Nur wenige Zeit später wurde Joseph an dem Strand erschossen, an dem viele in Barcelona Erschossene ihr Schicksal fanden. Die Leichen dieser Menschen wurden dann auf Lastwagen geladen und zum heutigen Massengrab gebracht. Zu dieser Zeit gab es nur einen Zugang zu den Klippen, welche das Tal bilden, in welchem die Toten heute ruhen. Von dort oben wurden die toten Körper über Rutschen hinunterbefördert und mit Kalk und Erde verdeckt, um die Beweise der Straftat schneller verschwinden zu lassen.

Zu Beginn des spanischen Bürgerkrieges hatte Joseph Fortuny eine gute Tat vollbringen wollen. Er hatte den Priester des Dorfes gerettet und ihm bei der Flucht nach Barcelona geholfen. Während des Bürgerkrieges wurden viele Priester vor allem von anarchistischen Kräften getötet, da sie als Franquisten und Feinde der Republik galten.  Als Joseph Fortuny bereits im Gefängnis war, kam der Priester zum Haus der Familie und versprach ihnen, etwas zu tun, was sie ihm niemals vergessen würden. Die Familie glaubte daran, dass der Priester Joseph Fortuny freilassen könnte. In diesem Glauben fuhr Pere‘s Mutter am nächsten Tag zum Gefängnis, um ihren Mann abzuholen. Am Morgen desselben Tages war Joseph Fortuny jedoch erschossen worden. Als sie später den zuständigen Anwalt damit konfrontierte, war dieser über die Geschehnisse nicht informiert, sondern verwirrt, da er ein Gnadengesuch eingereicht hatte. Die letzte Instanz, bevor es zu einer Exekution kam, war immer Madrid, von dort kam die letzte Unterschrift. Heute bestätigt die Einsicht der Akten, dass Joseph Fortuny nicht exekutiert werden sollte. Also hatte der Priester wirklich etwas vollbracht, was ihm die Familie Fortuny niemals vergessen würde. Doch damit hörte sein Terror nicht auf. (Pere bezeichnete den Priester während seiner Erzählung als einen von Grund auf bösen Menschen). Der Priester drang in das Haus von Joseph Fortuny ein und eignete es sich an. Darunter fiel die umfangreiche Bibliothek von Joseph Fortuny und Gemälde, deren Wert heute wohl im mehreren tausend Euro Bereich liegen würde. Trotz dieser Umstände entschied sich Pere´s Mutter gegen ein Leben ins Exil. Sie lebte mit Sohn und Tochter erst eine Weile bei den Eltern. Denen wurde jedoch vom franquistischen Bürgermeister ihres Dorfes und dem Priester gedroht, dass sie ruiniert werden, sollten sie ihre Familie aufnehmen. Trotzdem nahmen die Großeltern ihre Enkel bei sich auf. Daraufhin wurde kurzerhand jedem im Dorf verboten, mit ihnen Geschäfte zu machen. Hätte nicht ein Freund Lebensmittel auf ihr Grundstück geschmuggelt wären sie wohl verhungert. Doch der Terror wollte kein Ende nehmen. Behörden versuchten, die Kinder zwangsweise in kirchliche Internate zu stecken. Die Guardia Civil wurde vom Priester beauftragt, die Kinder aus dem Haus zu holen, doch deren Großmutter stellte sich ihnen in den Weg und konnte das verhindern. Für diese Tat wurde sie zu umgerechnet mehreren tausend Euro Strafe verurteilt. Weil das nicht bezahlt werden konnte, wurden sie enteignet. Erst später konnten die Großeltern einen Kredit aufnehmen und so die Strafe abbezahlen. Zusätzlich wurde den Kindern verboten, öffentliche Schulen zu besuchen und somit mussten sie den Besuch einer Privatschule bezahlen.

Pere Fortuny konnte sich an sein sechstes Lebensjahr erinnern, von welchem an er jeden Sonntag mit seiner Mutter das vermeintliche Grab seines Vaters besuchte, um Blumen niederzulegen. Bloß gab ihnen jeder Wachmann eine andere ungefähre Position an.

Gerechtigkeit statt Rache

Heute sind die Toten mit einem grünen Rasen bedeckt und der Platz ist ein dezenter Ort der Erinnerung geworden. Dieser Zustand ist der Associacio Pro-Memoria zu verdanken. Der President dieser Vereinigung ist Pere Fortuny. Erstmals 1976 schlossen sich Familienangehörige der Opfer zusammen, um diesen Ort würdiger zu gestalten. Damals wurde der Ort beherrscht von dicken Ratten, Schlangen und Müll. Das Ziel der Familien war es vor allem, dass Stadt sich des Ortes annimmt und ihn gestaltet. 7 Jahre dauerte es, bis sie Erfolg erlangten. Was sie jedoch bis heute nicht schaffen konnten, ist die Annullierung der Urteile und damit die Anerkennung, dass diese Menschen keine Verbrecher waren, sondern teilweise aufgrund persönlicher Präferenzen ermordet wurden. Auf katalanischer Ebene gibt es bereits ein Gesetz, welches die Urteile dieses „Gerichtsverfahrens“ annulliert. Es hat jedoch keine Wirkung, da es auf oberster Ebene in Madrid nicht anerkannt wird.

Trotz der Grausamkeit, welche Pere, stellvertretend für alle Familien der Opfer, durchleben musste, handelt die Organisation nach dem Motto Gerechtigkeit, keine Rache.

Zusammenfassung

Das Treffen mit Pere Fortuny war ein beeindruckendes Erlebnis. Er ist einer der wenigen Augenzeugen dieses Teils der Geschichte Spaniens. Es ist sehr wichtig, dass Menschen diese Geschichte hören und zuhören. So schmerzlich die Erinnerung auch sein mag, es ist wichtig für eine ernstzunehmende Demokratie, durch das Herausfinden der Wahrheit, Etablierung von Gerechtigkeit für die Betroffenen und die Wiedergutmachung, eine Erinnerung zu schaffen.
