Dungeon Meshi Human Interracial offspring (Mostly Spoiler Free)

As you might know, in Dungeon Meshi "human" is a term that refers to not only "tallman" (the equivalent of our world humans) but also Half-Foots, Ogres, Dwarves and Elves.

Besides the weird bone counting classification Kabru made I think one of the defining "human" aspects might be being able to have offspring with each other (unclear if that's possible at all between human and demi-human).

That said the Adventurer's Guide has some information about it that I wanted to share.

First, Humans in dungeon meshi are divided between short and long lived races, those are:

Half-foot

Ogre

As a general rule mixed offspring seems to be infertile but there's some exceptions.

Confirmed mixed race offspring that can leave descendants (Fertile offspring):

An easy chart with the info! (It's not that complicated but its easier for me to see like this) (edit: added info what mixes have confirmed and speculated characters)

Seems like short-lived species can only have fertile offspring with each other and the same for long lived. Although there's no information about elves being able to have them with any other races, maybe because they live so much more than the other long-lived species (400 vs 200 & 240)

There's also no information about Ogres with Half-foot but I don't imagine the logistics to produce offspring would work there 😳

Another thing is that the Adventurer's Bible describes that the tallman have had an explosive growth due to having fertile offspring with half-foot and Ogres , so I wonder if that means their offspring are tallman too? Or are they still half-half-foot (a funny name) and half-Ogre? Unclear!

Marina's Dev Diaries: localization differences

yeah so I just read through all of Marina's Dev Diaries in Japanese while cross checking it to English localization, just to see how faithfully translated it is and.... GREAT NEWS there's like no significant changes! Like there's the expected minor moving things and wording it different to flow well in english of course, but in terms of overall meaning and characterization its very faithful. I'll cover some minor changes I found but like. again these are so minor it doesn't really matter.

4th Entry Localization: "Poor Pearl doesn't know what to do with a free moment anymore. I'm always catching her bouncing with anticipation."

JP: "Pearl is always bouncing from side to side whenever she has a free moment" This is a reference to Pearl's side hops she did in octo expansion to get hyped and charge her special...this was localized to her "warming up her vocal cords" for the sake of story and the english version just refuses to acknowledge the side hops thing which is. minor inkling biology tidbit at most but eh whatever

8th Entry localization: "I'll handle system management myself! And I think user guidance would be a great fit for Pearl."

JP specifies that Marina tutored at a Takozones training program. What's really annoying is that Takozones are just called something like "Rival Octoling" or "Enemy Octoling" or just "Octoling" in english, but they're supposed to be a specific rank of elite female octoling soldiers. this is just a longtime issue with how muddied octarian classifications are between english and jp lol

12th Entry Localization: "Pearl is joining us too. She doesn't seem to get what it's all about, but she's usually down for whatever. Together, the two of us will make sure Eight gets through it safe!" JP: "Pearl is joining us too. Another abnormality! Anyways, let me explain this abnormality. I loosely based this abnormality off of Jafar from both Disney's Aladdin and A Thousand and One Nights, specifically him after he turns into a genie. This abnormality will stop at nothing to twist your words and cause you pain and suffering, especially when it breaches containment and begins to shape the facility around itself. We have a new tradition, which is that after last season's Krazy Kripples, we'll have a new Jimmy episode every year! And this is the first time we meet Nathan and the rest of the special education kids. S8E3 The Passion of the Jew is FILLER

I wanted to tell you this one was canon, because the season has constant mentions of Passion of the Christ so far, but in the end, it doesn't even matter. S8E4 AWESOM-O is FILLER

Sooo if every anime filler was as good as these ones, the filler guides most likely wouldn't exist (or they would, because humans), but again, what we have is a self-contained story. S8E5 You Got F'd in the A is FILLER

Noo please don’t apologize for the headcanons!! I love them 🥺 the comments that were bothering me weren’t on a classification au fic, and i don’t mind people discussing my work or sharing their thoughts, it’s more so when people comment and it just says “when’s the update” 🥲 I have not had any problems with any of your messages (or any of the other anons that send in headcanons if you’re reading this) and if anything your messages have been incredibly encouraging. Sharing headcanons is a wonderful way to engage with a story and show the author how much you love it.

The fic in particular (You’re a Canary, I’m a Coal Mine) I just haven’t had the motivation to work on for the past few months, and the last two chapters I posted for it haven’t necessarily been my favorite. Favorite Location - The Cemetery of Restless Sleep In my lore this is basically the afterlife. There are two guardian deities: Dia, the Shepherd who finds lost souls and takes them to the Cemetery, and Zheng, the Exorcist who cleanses them of their torment. (Dia is the Skydancer and Zheng is the Wildclaw)

In-lore, these two were placed in charge of a museum full of stolen artifacts. Wryze (the first one) is a curator and researcher; Wynn (the second one) is an archaeologist. They were assigned the museum with the task of returning the artifacts to the places they were taken from, but they quickly realize that some of the artifacts contain curses, spirits, and souls.

This is how they meet Dia and Zheng, who ask them to find all the artifacts and release the spirits from their chains.

Magic System I kept the basic elemental magic that FR gives us, but I also added my own magic system. Basically, a person's magic manifests in a different part of the body, and that influences how they use the magic. There are five manifestations:

Blood - Magic in movement. Breath - Magic in transformation. Bone - Magic in fortification. Brain - Magic in comprehension. Break - Magic in sacrifice.

The first four are natural. Break is something that is achieved. A person changes themselves irreversibly and irreparably, and they exchange their first magic for Break. It's not always a bad thing, but because of the cost needed, it's highly taboo.

There are also four different classifications of magic users. Their profession is usually connected to their magic type.

Alchemists - Artificers, healers, etc. Usually Brain or Breath. Artist - Bards, painters, writers, dancers. Typically Breath or Blood. Oracle - Seers and speakers, usually Brain. Hunter - Soldiers, assassins, etc. Bone or Blood.

There are exceptions, like my girl Maelstrom who is a Blood Oracle, or Catcher and Ether who are Bone Medics:

Break users can do anything. Hyde started off as a Brain Alchemist and achieved Break in a scientific accident.

Ghosts and Gods operate on their own mysterious magic system, and there's a sylvan court of Veilspun that do their own thing, but these other magic systems aren't well known or documented.

Favorite Dragon: Eden

This was so hard a favorite, so I had to just pick one, haha. This is Eden, the adopted daughter of Maelstrom and Hyde. She's a gardener, but she's also the manifestation of the World-Consuming Flames. Basically she's prophesied to end the world.

Maelstrom is the one who saw the prophesy, and is struggling to come to terms with it. Hyde is convinced that Eden can fight the prophesy, or possibly even delay the end of the world for a few thousand more years. The real scandal is overclassification

The fact that every president and VP has a garage or filing cabinet or shoebox full of classified documents isn't (merely) evidence of political impunity - it's also the latest absurd turn in the long-running true scandal: the American epidemic of overclassification and excessive secrecy.

Thousands of American bureaucrats have unilaterally classified tens of millions of unremarkable documents without any legitimate basis for shielding them from public view. Meanwhile, millions of people have "Top Secret clearance" and can view these documents, making a mockery of their supposed secrecy.

Writing for The American Prospect, David Dayen crystallizes the incentives, problems and corruption that we should be paying to, and laments that instead, we're scoring cheap political points about the recklessness of presidents and ex-presidents, heavily salted with paranoid fantasies about the Danger to National Security (TM) posed by letting these docs escape the airless chambers of official secrecy:

Overclassification is a well-documented (ahem) problem, used by bureaucrats to cover up corruption, crimes and incompetence, as well as out of the lazy reflex to declare everything to be secret. This is abetted by members of the vast "Intelligence Community" who have rotated into the private sector and have a lucrative side-hustle as TV talking heads who spin spy-thriller fantasies about the risks of these paper broken arrows.

Dayen points to Senator Moynihan's 1997 report on "Protecting and Reducing Government Secrecy," and its conclusion that if you declare everything secret, then nothing ends up being truly secret. It's a brilliant, readable, devastating critique of official secrecy. Nothing has been done about its recommendations:

In 2016, the House Oversight Committee concluded that 90% of classified documents should not be classified, the same figure that the DoD came up with in its own report, 60 years earlier:

Meanwhile, the Information Security Oversight Office - which oversees classification - keeps ringing alarm bells about overclassification, with 50m+ documents being classified in a typical year. Rather than listen to the ISOO, Congress has cut its staff in half over the past decade. 620 ISOO employees oversee the three million Americans empowered to classify documents:

As Dayen says, the talking point from ex-spooks on TV that "overclassification is no excuse for bad document handling," is the equivalent of the old saw that "mass shootings are not the time to talk about gun control." And yet, the press keeps buying it.

Take the Politico op-ed by an ex-FBI spook, who turned the fact that "a foreign leader might like turnip-flavored ice cream into a classifiable scenario," proving that there is no overclassification excuse too absurd to get an airing:

i made a couple little updates:

broke the manual up into multiple pages because it was getting too damn long. gives me more room to infodump anyway lmao peruse at your own risk, this is a huge WIP and probably doesn't make sense in some places because i'm still rewriting stuff; if you haven't looked at it in a while, i've added a TON and am still working on stuff but feel free to peruse if you like diagrams and classifications and dumb shit

ive just done that! it was really good! i like the vibes its giving me. i have no idea where its going but episode 1 vibe is a cross between hero's party and wandering witch elena, so like i am super super down for that.

as far as isekai classification, i dont think ive ever really talked about it at length publicly but my definition is a lot broader than most because im not classifying based on the isekai trope so much as im classifying based on the genre. people really seem to hate this but like. my main goal is to watch stuff that i enjoy, so of course im going to prioritise things i enjoy over things that feature exactly one kinda similar plot point. the thing that overwhelmingly defines the isekai genre is a feeling of video game/ttrpg logic. things with skills, levels, job classes, adventurers, parties, dungeons, things like that. and like, as an example, if i were to come up to someone and be like 'hi i really liked Sword Art Online and i want to watch something with a similar feel to it, would you recommend Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon (Danmachi) or Inuyasha?" the obvious answer is danmachi, despite the fact that it does NOT contain the isekai trope, while inuyasha does. so we get a lot of things sorted into the isekai genre that isnt actually really isekai.

anyway this is a girl with memories of her past life and a god-granted Skills system, so it's pretty firmly an isekai for my purposes. but also! i do watch a lot of stuff that's just regular fantasy that doesnt go in my vault, bc fantasy is still My Whole Thing! so feel free to tag me in anything i mightve missed bc i would wanna watch it lol. and if ive already checked it out, i will almost definitely have something to say about it!

Is it as vivid as real life, and do you have to astral project or reality shift to get there? I've always been really "connected" with my F/Os, especially because of maladaptive daydreaming, sometimes I'd be thinking about something and a completely unexpected scenario with my F/Os would pop up in my mind, unprompted

When I first watched Howl's Moving Castle I thought to myself "Wouldn't it be cool if I could make a place like that?" And so Howl helped me make it, so it's almost like a little parallel universe that's stashed away in my mind!

As for what it's like, it's just as real as this universe for me. I can access it anytime, I just have to feel like it. Sometimes it's hard not to slip into it when I'm having a hard time over here, so most of the time I actually have to hold myself back instead of actively seeking it

The mansion itself is a single building in the middle of the void, but each person or character can imagine what the outside looks like, so it'll feel more welcoming and natural to them!

The whole thing is filled with magic essence and is ever changing, each character has complete control over their own room, being able to change every aspect of it and it's contents; for example: if a character needs to be underwater to survive, their room will be constantly flooded but essentially bound to the walls outside of their room!

I'm the host, and while I'm inside the mansion I have complete control over the building and my appearance as well. I usually just stick to my real life appearance (because I forget to change it 99% of the time)

Other than the systems I'll be listing below, the mansion operates like a magical luxury hotel

New rooms, furniture and essentials automatically form when a new F/O joins, that can also include their ability to communicate with the others, if they speak a different language. It's accessible to all and welcoming to all cultures, backgrounds and relationships!

When I'm outside of the building, in this universe, whatever happens to me is pretty much live streamed for whoever is willing to watch, as well as allowing them to interfere with my routine and to manifest themselves in the real world. Usually the most present in the real world are the ones I've been paying the most attention to.

Former F/Os can sometimes stop by the mansion to visit or stay for a couple of days/weeks. Some never really leave!

Here's the systems that help keep things in order:

1. The classification system:

As soon as someone joins the mansion they're allowed to see a complete list of all the current (and forming) members and what relationship they have with me.

Red names are strictly romantic F/Os, the shade of red expresses the depth of the relationship, the darker the more serious it is. It can all range out from a simple crush to being full on married.

Blue names are strictly familial F/Os, the shade of blue expresses the level of authority this character has, the darker it is the more authority that character has over me. It can all range out from being my siblings to being my parents.

Purple names are shipcest ties, all have the same authority and color, because of the romantic aspect!

Green names are platonic F/Os, they can all have different levels of closure and various bonds with me, but they do not have varying shades.

Gray names are forming F/Os, characters I'm still not sure I'm actually in love with or simply admiring. If a bond is actually developed they'll be added to their respective category.

Black names rivals or enemies. The darker the name the rockier the relationship is. However, these characters can still be romantic F/Os!

2. The housing system:

Each story of the mansion is divided by source material, the more invested I am in something, the closer to the first floor it is. So the rooms and stories can move and change by themselves.

Each character gets their own room, usually neighboring characters from the same source as them, as long as they're not the only one from said source or if they would not be a direct threat to their neighbors. So for example, Eda can be Hunter's neighbor, but not Belos'.

The whole mansion is filled with magic essence, so each character's room is unique to their tastes and needs. If one character visits another the room will adapt slightly so that they're both comfortable in their environment.

The safety system:

Some characters prefer to live in stories based on their age other than their sources, so that they don't feel isolated! This usually applies to younger F/Os, older F/Os or immortal F/Os. Considering that characters from the same source can interact with each other there are certain safety measures to make sure they won't hurt each other if they don't get along.

A character can state their personal boundaries and psychologically inform all others if they'd rather just do their own thing, if they're open for forming a relationship with other characters or if they just want to avoid certain characters altogether! If two or more characters form a relationship I can also be included if I wish to!

If a character is plotting to or fully disrespecting the other's boundaries they can be moved to an entirely new story in the mansion so they won't misbehave. If this behavior is directed towards me there's a huge chance they'll be completely removed from the mansion.
