"More than three-quarters of UK universities have pledged to exclude fossil fuel companies from their investment portfolios, according to campaigners.

The move, which is part of a wider drive to limit investment in fossil fuels, follows years of campaigning by staff and students across the higher education sector.

The student campaign group People & Planet announced on Friday that 115 out of 149 UK universities had publicly committed to divest from fossil fuels – meaning £17.7bn-worth of endowments are now out of reach of the fossil fuel industry.

Laura Clayson, from People & Planet, said it would have been unthinkable a decade ago that so many institutions had formally refused to invest in fossil fuels.

“That we can celebrate this today is down to the generations of students and staff that have fought for justice in solidarity with impacted communities. The days of UK universities profiteering from investments in this neo-colonial industry are over.”

People & Planet set up the Fossil Free universities campaign in 2013. As part of its efforts the group has highlighted the “struggles and voices” of communities on the frontline of the climate crisis in an attempt to bring home the real-world impact of investment decisions made by UK universities.

Clayson said: “The demand for fossil-free came from frontline communities themselves and it is an act of solidarity from global north organisers campaigning on this … We have a responsibility to speak the lived experiences of the communities resisting these inequalities into megaphones at protests and in negotiations within university boardrooms, to highlight their stories of struggle in spaces so often detached from the reality of everyday life on the frontlines.”

One of the projects highlighted by the campaign is the proposed East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) – a mega project that would stretch almost 900 miles from the Lake Albert region of Uganda to the coast in Tanzania, and release vast amounts of planet-heating carbon.

The pipeline is being built in spite of local opposition, and there are reports that protesters and critics have been met with state violence. Hundreds of student organisers have been involved in the struggle.

Ntambazi Imuran Java, the lead coordinator at the Stop EACOP Uganda campaign, said its members appreciated the efforts of UK students to bring an end to universities’ fossil fuel investments.

“[This] supports those who have worked tirelessly to stop deadly extraction projects like EACOP … Regardless of the arrests and violations on the activists, students’ activists and communities, we continue to demand for the Uganda authorities to stop the project and instead invest in renewables.”

People & Planet said four UK institutions – Birmingham City University, Glasgow School of Art, Royal Northern College of Music and the University of Bradford – had recently incorporated fossil fuel exclusions into their ethical investment policies, meaning 115 out of 149 UK universities have publicly committed to divest from fossil fuels.

Later this month, the group will group will unveil its latest university league table that ranks institutions by their ethical and environmental performance. Campaigners say they will then increase pressure on the remaining 34 UK universities yet to go fossil-free."

Hey not to go all "tumblr is a professional networking site" on you, but how did you get to work for Microsoft??? I'm a recent grad and I'm being eviscerated out here trying to apply for industry jobs & your liveblogging about your job sounds so much less evil than Data Entry IT Job #43461

This place is basically LinkedIn to me.

I'm gonna start by saying I am so so very sorry you're a recent grad in the year 2024... Tech job market is complete ass right now and it is not just you. I started fulltime in 2018, and for 2018-2022 it was completely normal to see a yearly outflow of people hopping to new jobs and a yearly inflow of new hires. Then sometime around late-spring/early-summer of 2022 Wallstreet sneezed the word "recession" and every tech company simultaneously shit themselves.

Tons of layoffs happened, meaning you're competing not just with new grads but with thousands of experienced workers who got shafted by their company. My org squeaked by with a small amount of layoffs (3 people among ~100), but it also means we have not hired anyone new since mid-2022. And where I used to see maybe 4-8 people yearly leave in order to hop to a new job, I think I've seen 1 person do that in the whole last year and a half.

All this to say it's rough and I can't just say "send applications and believe in yourself :)".

I have done interviews though. (I'm not involved in resume screening though, just the interviews of candidates who made it past the screening phase.) So I have at least some relevant advice, as well as second-hand knowledge from other people I know who've had to hop jobs or get hired recently.

If you have friends already in industry who you feel comfortable asking, reach out to them. Most companies have a recommendation process where a current employee fills out a little form that says "yeah I'd recommend such-and-such for this job." These do seem to carry weight, since it's coming from a trusted internal person and isn't just one of the hundreds of cold-call applications they've received.

A lot of tech companies--whether for truly well-intentioned reasons or to just check a checkbox--are on the lookout for increasing employee diversity. If you happen to have anything like, for example, "member of my college Latino society", it's worth including on your resume among your technical skills and technical projects.

I would add "you're probably gonna have to send a lot of applications" as a bullet point but I'm sure you're already doing that. But here it is as a bullet point anyway.

(This is kind of a guess, since it's part of the resume screening) but if you can dedicate some time to getting at least passingly familiar with popular tech/stacks for the positions you're looking into, try doing that in your free time so you can list it on your resume. Even better if you make a project you can point to. Like if you're aiming for webdev, get familiar with React and probably NodeJS. On top of being comfortable in one of the all-purpose languages like C(++) or Java or Python.

If you get to the interview phase - a company that is good to work for WILL care that you're someone who's good to work with. A tech-genius who's a coworker-hating egotistical snob is a nuisance at best and a liability at worst for companies with even a half-decent culture. When I do interviews, "Is this someone who's a good culture fit?" is as important as the technical skills. You'll want to show you'll be a perfectly pleasant, helpful, collaborative coworker. If the company DOESN'T care about that... bullet dodged.

For the technical questions, I care more about the thought process than I do the right answer, especially for entry-level. If you show a capacity for asking good, insightful clarifying questions, an ability to break down the problem, explain your thought process, and backtrack&alter your approach upon realizing something won't work, that's all more important than just being able to spit out a memorized leetcode answer. (I kinda hate leetcode for this reason, and therefore I only ask homebrewed questions, because I don't want the technical portion to hinge at all on whether someone managed to memorize the first 47 pages of leetcode problems). For a new hire, the most important impression you can give me is that you have a technical grasp and that you're capable of learning. Because a new hire isn't going to be an expert in anything, but they're someone who's capable of learning the ropes.

That's everything I have off the top of my head. Good luck anon. I'm very sorry you were born during a specific range of years that made you a new grad in 2024 and I hope it gets better.

The Making of Derelict

I made a videogame!

So…

That’s pretty neat.

The original plan was to spend two weeks on the bulk of the work, then to spend two more weeks beta testing, polishing, and releasing.

It took me three months, which...well, oops. Regardless, I learned a lot along the way and I’m happy with the end result, so allow me to take you on a journey behind the scenes of Derelict: Deep Space Salvage.

All good games start with a concept, a central idea, a defining through-line upon which the whole of the experience is balanced. More 𝒸𝓇𝑒𝒶𝓉𝒾𝓋𝑒 developers usually don’t make that idea the title of their game, but I don’t want to be a creative developer, I want to be a good one.

In this case, I wanted to make a game about plundering the leftovers of those too stupid, or simply not fortunate enough, to survive the dangers of the infinite, starlit expanses.

Easy, just make it then, right?

Wrong! What do you think I am, a swiss army knife with legs? No, my friend, first thing’s first: skill set! What can I actually do on my own? If it wasn’t obvious, I’m a writer first and foremost (cough, ahem, cough). I can do a little programming too, a little java, a little C#, a little HTML.

Therefore my decision became simple as dirt: A text-adventure game needs no audio, minimal graphics, only basic programming, and a shitload of writing. (I used Twine, for those interested)

That’s not to say I haven’t considered adding some pizzazz. Some snappy ear-candy for when the player clicks a button might be nice, a little ethereal, industrial ambience could really sell the lost-in-space vibe, and I did whip up a sorta-lazy cover image, something to get the job done. Still, you have to choose your battles.

That’s actually the most important lesson, by the way. I ran two months overtime because I could afford to, and I focused on polishing the narrative experience because that was the heart of what makes Derelict fun. I even added achievements to the game…

…because that gives the player a good reason to play again and try to new things, to see more of the writing that I came up with and experience the game more fully. That was worth the extra time because it contributes to the primary experience, however subtly.

All the extra stuff I wanted to do but didn’t get to is now in a list for future consideration. Maybe I’ll come back and update Derelict, maybe I’ll make a sequel, maybe I’ll just try to add this stuff to some future project. What’s important is that I made something with intention, and that it got done.

feel free to not answer this but this is something that's been worrying me a bit, but the dream management account has said that dream used chatgpt to help him when it came to the titan project. now obviously he couldn't have coded the entire thing with chatgpt and with the languages he learned and months sunk into the project, he still clearly did the vast majority of the work, but i was just worried about copywrite issues, i have no idea how any of that works. (and obviously using it as an aid as opposed to using it as a way to avoid paying people are vastly different which is what you're talking about, but it just reminded me of the worry again)

oh i can answer this because he actually explained it ! just to get it out of the way, trademarking code is extremely difficult. and he's working with java which you basically can't copyright. not an issue there

but also he said he used it to learn how to do the things. which means he knew what he had to do, he asked for an example implementation, and then changed it to work for him. and i know he changed it because i have seen bits of the code from the shaders thing and chatgpt cannot output that kind of code

i don't like the usage of gpt at all i think it's bad always, but putting that aside what dream is doing is actually learning how to do a thing and reimplementing the code which is completely okay and legal. and he was on top of that paying people for other things he didn't know how to do instead of asking gpt for raw full code

which is what these friends of mine suspect q could be doing because they just don't trust him and the quality of the mod was already mediocre back then. so we'll take a look at it and see

but yeah dream's case completely different from a fundamental standpoint, seen it myself, these are two different things and again putting aside my hatred for gpt he is in the clear

agree on everything you said to anon except one point, that o's best option is to leave gmmtv. honestly i don't think that would change anything. whether he is in gmmtv, joins another agency or goes independent, the crazy "fans" are the same. so the chances of him getting another partner are low if they fear they'll be as abused as l was by the on delulus. staying or leaving, as you said, he loses anyway, but at least in gmmtv he has his friends to support him. i'm so mad for him, this people really potentially damaged his bl career beyond repair for a ship that's been over for years now.

personally i think his best option is to take 1-2 years out of main lead roles, take a step back into side characters - token single friend if you will - and hopefully the "fans" will dispers or loss hope with time. so he's still working, but not in a ship and what that entails. he's also gotten into racing, i think, so side roles would give him more free time for that. and considering how long he's been in the bl world, and what he's had to go through the last years, boy deserves a break.

with l and the future projects, i hear that at least mu te lav he'll keep, since he's been in the workshops for weeks (which o didn't attend) and the director(?) has confirmed it. so my guess is o will be recast and l will have a new ship (rumors are it might be barcode). with only friends... it's an unknown. while it's sad that o loses both projects (i wish he could keep of, he fit the vibe so well) it's looking impossible as it would require a new partner for him and we have established how improbable that is. so either the whole couple gets recast, or l and his new partner do it.

obviously the crazy fans would stay but at least it wouldn't interfere negatively with other productions and ships and their fandoms within the company anymore. Things like this require recastings and various internal reorganizations which are annoying and time consuming and a hassle for everyone involved (even if production hasn't started yet), which is why I think it's best if at least Ohm would not be associated with gmmtv anymore. Because like I said, he will lose either way. And leaving the company doesn't mean he will be cut off from his friends lol plus the support he is potentially getting inside the company doesn't matter anyway if the higher-ups only care about profits and not the well-being of their artists and are being so easily influenced by fans.

He already has a few projects outside of gmmtv so this definitely won't hurt him. At the moment I don't think Leng is leaving, he's still kind of a newbie and I hope they will give him the chance to evolve in further projects. He deserves it. Ohm said yesterday on Twitter that he will continue to be an actor and treat racing as a hobby so if that means that he will stay with gmmtv or not remains to be seen but I think him laying low in side roles for the time being sounds like a reasonable idea.

You sent this before they announced AouBoom and SurfJava as their replacements in Only Friends and Mu-Te-Luv respectively which I assume you saw by now. I guess those 2 pairs are good choices although I'm sad to see Leng leave Only Friends as I was very excited to see him as Raffy. but I trust AB to do the roles justice. They've been kind of a salvage couple for a while now anyway lol. They will ace it for sure. SurfJava are a new ship but I loved Java in Summer Night so I'm sure they will do good too. Remains to be seen. It's been a wild 24 hours 🫡 lol

Shifting Stars Intro Post

Shifting Stars is a Warrior Cats based Minecraft Java Edition RPG server. I've been working on it for about a year now as the sole developer. It still is pretty far from finished, but I figure it might be fun to post about it here.

Features such things as thirst and energy mechanics, a leveling system, diseases/conditions, custom mobs, weather and seasons, and so much more!

I'll be posting about every feature individually over time. I'll be posting about stuff that's already been finished for awhile, but I'll also post the new updates as I finish them.

Tag Team Tournament 2024

We're back for another year of good old fashioned fandom fun! This year the Tag Team Tournament will take place from Sunday, July 28th - Saturday, August 3rd, so make sure to save the date and get started on your projects early!

We've got some fun things planned this year, but we're also making some changes to how we're running the event this year! For the full rules and guidelines, check out our Event Guide Document, now newly revised for 2024! The short version is that we've changed some of our scoring to remove certain exploitable flaws that were exposed last year, clarified submission guidelines, added new ways to earn bonus points, and changed our team lineup!

Now, last year we had a very popular Shipping Bracket to determine who our eighth team would be, but this year we decided that we wanted out lead up event to better help you all prepare for this year's event. RE: your minecraft project

You should make a google doc to get a list of people to contact when you’re ready for the project. Also to gauge if bedrock or java is better for your project goals.

My plan right now is Java, seeing as I already know free and easy means for setting up a server that I can turn on and off easily, and I know that way that I can set up some resource packs to make running/spectating the event easier for me. Though honestly seeing how big the turn out ended up being for that poll I might need to go look into some paid options to help mitigate lag at this point 😅

In terms of creating a list of people to contact, it wasn't exactly something I was planning to do seeing as I wasn't really expecting this to leave my follower circle and the last post was ligitamatly just to gauge interest in the project, but I'll say if anyone wants to be notified when I post the link to the project discord (hopefully some time next week assuming all goes well), feel free to comment and say so and I'll tag you when it gets posted.

I've been thinking long and hard about the BDS Microsoft Boycott call. The request focused on Microsoft Games, on the basis that, in theory, that's the easiest part of the Microsoft financial ecosystem for people to disconnect from in order to send a message. This includes pushing people (including parents) to uninstall and get their kids to stop playing Minecraft.

First off, the way the game industry is now, unfortunately, is that game developers or even full divisions of larger companies that underperform - or even just indy developers who self publish and underperform, just get shut down and everyone gets fired. Even if we boycott South of Midnight as part of the BDS movement and clearly communicate that message, what's more likely to happen is the company would be shut down, everyone would be fired, and a bunch of alt-right chuds would ignore the BDS boycott and call this a triumph of "Get Woke, Go Broke". They might even try to co-opt the movement as a half alliance of convenience, half desire to redirect the movement for antisemitic ends, with no actual interest in the plight of the Palestinian people.

There was an opportunity here to point people towards alternatives outside of either abandoning the software entirely, or alternative programs people who want to boycott can use to abandon something that they didn't think they could.

First, and this feels weird to say, Minecraft is something that doesn't have a lot of alternative replacements - it's a sandbox that allows children to indulge their imagination to create large scale ambitious projects that can't be replicated the same way as, for example, Lego, because they take no space in the real world, and thus you have no real world storage concerns, both in terms of space and in terms of risk of damage. The alternative to Minecraft isn't Palworld or Ark Survival Evolved. It's Roblox. And Roblox is also a bunch of dark patterns and sexual predators stacked on top of each other in a trenchcoat.

Now, on the other hand, Microsoft will happily charge you money to host a Minecraft server through them, and that puts money in the Azure division, the part that is directly aiding and abetting Israeli war crimes. But you don't have to go through Microsoft. You can run your own Minecraft server. Microsoft even tells you how to do it.

So, cancel your Minecraft Worlds subscription, and roll your own server. You can even set it up so it stays in your network, so your kid's friends have to come over to use it (or so it stays in the family).

Next up - Microsoft pushes OneDrive hard as part of Windows 11. They also pushed it hard on Windows 10. They insist that it's the best and biggest way, and easiest way to backup your data. It's not. There are myriad alternatives, from Google Drive, to Dropbox, to the Apple iCloud (if you use iOS devices). And, OneDrive uses Azure Cloud services to host your data

So, disable OneDrive, and go somewhere else. I've listed several alternatives above, but if you're okay with the backup being on site, you can also build a NAS (Network Attached Storage) server to store files locally. This does have the disadvantage that if something damages your house, your kinda in trouble, though using something like Backblaze on the NAS can make up for that.

Then there's the whole Microsoft 365 suite. Azure is connected to the Microsoft Office part of the business, and they've been incorporating some of those services, like Copilot, into Microsoft 365. So, again, there are alternatives.

LibreOffice has been around for years, is free, and runs locally with no cloud hooks. You can replace Outlook with Thunderbird, or the BetterBird fork.

Finally, there are the hooks to Copilot, which also runs on Azure, which Microsoft runs in the operating system. Turn that shit off.

FAQ thread!!

Just an FAQ answer thread for me and Leafenzo's dye mods (of which we've decided to call them "El & L's Dyes!")

Where can I download the mods?

We are actively developing them! - so they are not out yet. Once I reach 1K followers on Twitter, we will release a playtest consisting of solely the mint dye and the associated content. I'll post on my blog of mod progress and updates, and will edit this thread in the future.

What version are the mods on?

The mod is being developed for Java Edition 1.20.1 Fabric. We may poke around with a Forge port at some point, but because of how Forge handles dye enums and such there is absolutely no guarantee.

Will it be on Bedrock?

There is no Bedrock Edition port or addon planned at all at this time. Bedrock is a completely different platform and neither me or Leafenzo have much experience with it. Perhaps it may be considered down the road, but again, no guarantees.

Can I use your textures in my project?

Generally, I don't mind my textures being used for personal texture packs, but please ask me before doing so and give credit. I do not allow my textures to be used for any public texture packs or projects. I may be open to making something if you absolutely *have* to have a texture. DM me!

Dye "mods"... how many are there?

As development moves forward this may change, but at the present moment we plan to split the main 16 dyes into 4 mods with 4 dyes each. These will be: Pastels, Vivids, Neutrals and Darks. We may also make some more dye mods with unique concepts (like glow-in-the-dark or Vantablack) but those would be for fun.

Do you have any other projects?

Besides our dye mods, we have a mod called Squashed! that is nearly finished with development and a cave/rock mod called Lithogeology in the concept stages. I'll post about those on my blog as well.

Lillaarith here! I am still alive, just haven't had time or want to mod and play. LET GET INTO IT THE WHY SO, Windows decided to corrupt. I managed to save most my stuff but it wiped my Adobe Photoshop settings which caused me to lose my automated hair recolouring actions. which is a few hours to re-setup. But it also deleted my custom unreleased unnatural pallet *cries*

Luckily I've manage to scrape together almost all of them from older back ups but two colours are completely gone.

Some of you may know I was completely replacing every hair in my ts2 with unisexed hairs. I was doing pooklets and my own colours. I was using sikuli-ide 1.0.1 to automate making packages in bodyshop. sikuli-ide 1.0.1 used a certain version of java to work. I can no longer get that version so now looking for an new macro program. (Think I found a free one!) Milkshape is completely borked so have reset it up again.

Because of the corruption of windows, I lost my install of the UC. With EA killing Origin made it hard to get as the EA one breaks the downloads folder for me and $50 AUD is out of the question for me at this time for the broken Ts2 Legacy collection. So have to dig out my disc or find another means.... (yarrrrr) I lost the will to play for a long while but... Bright side!

I DO Have everything I was working on still, like the FF14 glasses, unisexed hairs (with 4gb of base flat textures in Admiral Aeris Talk about the weather, Amalia's Esper, Pooklets Project Mayhem (All colours), The Raven's Mix'n'match and Mine colours) for most of my done unisexed hairs. More FF14 foods and I do have piles of extracted game models to turn into teddies and other deco for all your nerdy needs.

As for coding: I am working on probably my largest project ever! Magma, a Lisp Interpreter in Java. It was originally inspired by Minecraft Mods like Computer Craft, and is based on the core of TinyLisp, however I am planning to expand it much more. Right now, I have made a registry for both Functions and Expressions, and reworking the core Eval-Loop to use Stack Safe recursion. Feel free to read over and maybe even make PRs! (but its right now in a state of rapid change, so it may not work)

Looking for a small Minecraft server?

Anyone know of any small, vanilla, free, unpopular Minecraft servers? 50 people Max? Chunk claims are preferred but if it's small enough I wouldn't be too worried. I've been playing on a server called cat craft and I'm getting tired of the crowdedness of it all 😅 I won't abandon playing on cat craft, but I desperately need some place to build large projects without a bunch of people trying to build near me, claim it, and then ditch it forever -_- I just want a little, basic, vanilla server, (or at least lightly modded, if required for chunk claims or sleep vote or something like that) with an at least DECENT community:/ I don't want greifers and creeps but cuss words and stuff is fine. I like servers because I have barely any social life irl 🥲 and it's fun to chat with someone while building or waiting for the daytime.
