✅The connection between the lip and the gums is called frenulum.
✏️The connection of the frenulum outside of its normal anatomy at birth can cause feeding problems, lip movement restriction and an increase in the distance between the front two teeth.
✏️In addition, this deformity of the frenulum in older ages can lead to a drooping nose tip.
✏️The treatment is surgical and should be examined by Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons.

A ROSE IN HARLEM
You're stuck in a romcom with your new asshole neighbor, Simon Riley
Masterlist
PART 2
I've got it bad (and that ain't good)
***
You have a ghost in your place. It follows you from room to room. The stench of smoke lingers in the air long after you think it should have dissipated, curling around you like an unseen presence. Shadows play tricks at the corners of your vision—on the fire escape, on the stairs that lead up to your place. There’s a persistent, nagging feeling of being watched, though when you turn to look, there’s never anyone there. And then the dreams. Oh God, the dreams. They leave you breathless, your chest heaving, your skin damp with sweat. You wake up disoriented, heart racing as if you've run miles.
“Astral projection,”
Ishta declares, as if it’s the most obvious explanation in the world. She’s holding your chin up, dabbing setting powder onto your face. You sigh, exasperated. Why are all the people in your life so unserious?
She shakes her head, undeterred by your skepticism, and rifles through your makeup bag.
“No, he doesn’t seem like the type to do that.”
You raise a brow, but she’s already leaning in again, biting her lip in concentration as she carefully fills in your eyebrows.
“I wouldn’t put it past him to use the O method, though.”
She adds, almost too casually.
“The what?”
“Oh, you know. When you, uh…”
She pulls back just enough to mimic a jerking motion with her hand, her bracelets clinking together.
“Ishta.”
Her grin widens, unapologetic, her frenulum piercing glinting as she flashes her teeth.
“I’m serious! It’s like, sex magic or something. It’s doing, uh,”
She makes the jerking motion again.
“But with intention. Picturing what you want.”
You stare at her, deadpan.
“I think that’s just called masturbating, Ishta.”
She clicks her teeth, as if you're being ridiculous.
“No! I promise it’s different!”
You narrow your eyes, but her conviction doesn’t waver.
“It’s about manifesting your future.”
She says, voice sweet as she brushes out your brows.
“That's great. Maybe he should find someone who wants to be in his future.”
You mutter, your voice more defensive than you intended.
Ishta’s grin widens.
 “He already did.”
You roll your eyes.
“You're being delusional.”
“You're in denial.”
She leans back, tilting her head to assess her handiwork. You hate the way her words settle into the space between you, like she’s unearthed something you’ve been working hard to bury. Something you've been trying to hide from yourself.
“Perfect,”
She says, brushing off her hands.
“And if you keep avoiding him, you’ll just make him work harder. Men like that don’t back down easily.”
You frown, her words a revelation you knew before but didn’t want to accept. She holds your hands, brushing your knuckles with her thumbs.
“If you don't want him, I'll happily take him off your hands.”
She prods, hoping to get a reaction.
“Okay. That's fine, I don't care.”
You shrug, not taking the bait. She raises an eyebrow, mischief dances in her dark eyes.
“Oh really?”
“Really.”
She's not buying it though. You sigh,
“I don't care.”
You insist, not sure who you're trying to convince.
“Well, if you’re sure… I’ll see if he wants to come to kickboxing with me. Bet he’d look great sweating it out in a tank top.”
You try to hold back a smile, but it's too late, she saw it. She raises her eyebrows and bites back a laugh.
“Your hands are sweaty. God, you're so easy to read.”
“I hate you.”
You pull your hands away, wiping them on your dress.
“Hate me all you want, you still like him.”
“I don't like him. He's just hot.”
“Ok, you think he's hot. And he obviously likes you too.”
You point a finger at her,
“No, he just wants to fuck me.”
You correct her. She sighs and rolls her eyes.
“Fine, so what? You need a good dicking anyway. You think he's hot, and he wants to fuck, so do it!”
“I am not fucking my neighbor.”
“You two have chemistry!”
She says, fiddling with the hemline of your dress.
“Insulting each other is not chemistry, Ishta.”
You push her hands away playfully.
“Wanting to rip his head off is not sexy.”
“Tell that to a praying mantis.”
She simply retorts, picking up a mirror and some eyeliner. You open your mouth to say something but are caught off guard once you process what she said. A laugh escapes you.
“See? Not even denying it. Admit it,”
She simpers while lining her eyes.
“The tension, the sparring—it's hot.”
“It's vexing,”
You watch as she flicks her wrist to draw a perfect wing.
“He vexes me.”
She closes her eyes, letting the liner dry.
“You know what rhymes with vex?”
“Come off it, please.”
“I will once you get on it.”
You groan, swatting her arm while she cackles.
“Be serious.”
She tucks away her eyeliner and swipes some lipgloss on.
“I'm very serious, this is a dire situation. You need 10cc of his dick stat.”
You stand, pulling down your too-short dress and grabbing your bag, ignoring her vulgarity.
“Come on, let's go before we miss happy hour.”
She gives herself a once-over before slipping on her heels. She saunters to the door, keys jingling in her hands.
“You know, the male praying mantis can finish the mating process without a head.”
You've been ignoring him.
Every morning when you pass by in the foyer. Practically running past him in the hallway. Rushing to close the elevator door when you see him coming. You don't even blast your music anymore. As unseen as he can make himself be, it's like you have a god-damned sixth sense of when he's near, scurrying away as soon as your hackles raise.
It irks him.
He thinks about picking up the drill again, making holes at the shared wall where he knows your bedroom is. Seeing your face twisted up in anger, spitting curses at him, the daggers you shoot at him. It stirs something inside him, something dark and primal—thoughts he'd never want you to know, or anyone, really.
He'd be happy to lose sleep if that meant you'd give him that look again, like you could kill him where he stood. The thought of your hands tightening around his neck, fingers digging into his skin, eyes wide with rage, your arms trembling with the effort it takes to hold him there—he's found himself finishing to the idea a concerning amount of times.
He needs to call in the cavalry.
***
Kyle makes a face while he finishes his beer.
“You asked her ‘if she needed good dick’? Ever the charmer, LT.”
Johnny shrugs, shredding up his paper coaster.
“It's a valid question.”
“Of course you think that,”
Kyle waves down the bartender for a refill.
“You’re a dog.”
Price ignores the two, fully facing Simon.
“Don't terrorize the poor girl, won't do you any good.”
“Woman. She is a woman.”
Kyle interrupts. That gets an unamused look from the captain.
“Yes, woman. You can't just keep pushing her buttons, this isn't primary school. You've got to try something else. At least take her out before asking to fuck her again.”
Johnny chimes in.
“Nah, she likes to get riled up. I vote for hammering the wall again. Worked like a charm last time.”
Kyle sneers.
“Of course you'd say that, you like when women scream at you, you debauched lunatic.”
Simon doesn't linger on the fact that he and Johnny share the same type in that regard.
“Aye, I like a passionate woman.”
Johnny’s smile remains unfaltering, foolish, his eyes going dreamy, like he’s imagining having a fight with his bird right then and there—probably picturing her throwing something at his head for good measure. He and Kyle start to bicker, both too hard-headed for their own good.
Simon goes quiet, swirling his glass, eyes glazed over that signals he's blocking out the world around him before he loses temper.
“Enough.”
Price growls, sharp and final. He was always protective of Simon—even when it was his own sergeants getting into it. John addresses Simon, talking to him in that way that brings him back to reality.
“If she's avoiding you, it's because you pushed too hard. You don't fix that by pushing harder.”
Simon snorts, thinking of how Captain bullied his way into his girl's life. She is soft though, pliable. No bark or bite. Not like his girl at all.
“And what do you suggest? Flowers and poetry?”
“If it works, why not?”
Kyle answers, ever the lover boy. It's so easy for him to say. So easy for all of them. It grates on Simon's nerves. Not like Simon tried to pursue someone often, he doesn't have the patience for it, barely has the desire.
He stands abruptly, chair scraping the floor.
“Right.”
His voice is flat, face blank. He's halfway out the door when Kyle calls out to him,
“Good luck, mate.”
He doesn't respond, letting the door swing shut while he steps onto the sidewalk, lighting a cigarette.
“Fucking useless.”
He mutters, though he's not sure if he means his teammates or himself.
***
He knows he should feel bad about this. Watching you. He avoids the word stalking, settles on something softer—surveilling. Doesn't sound as sinister.
He likes watching you. He wealses his way into your Instagram, because a private page isn't stopping him from seeing you.
You post photos from your weekend nights out—bathroom selfies with friends, smiling and carefree in bars he'd never step foot in. You're pretty when you smile, almost as pretty as you pout. You wear a small dress out on the town. Something he could easily slide a hand under while you are distracted.
He likes your sense of humor.
He watches as you take pictures of new installments at your exhibition. Today, a small clay figure of a woman on horseback captioned,
“A hot new bombshell enters the villa”
He keeps track of other things too. Your cycle. Not in a creepy way, not exactly, but you make it very obvious when you're ovulating. Stories playfully carnal with captions like,"Raw, next question.” He takes note of it, filing it away, making sure he knows exactly when the window opens.
And during one of the hottest weeks of the summer, he decides it's the perfect time.
He's been building up to this of course, tugging off his hoodie after his morning runs so you see him sweaty and panting while you walk past in the foyer. He doesn't mind showing a bit of skin, putting on a show for his girl. As long as he gets to see those shameful little peeks you take. Eyes unwillingly darting from the floor to his arms then back to the floor.
And he waits.
Waits until you put your guard down a little. Your shoulders don't tense up as much when he walks by. You stop glancing over your shoulder as often. You even start playing your music each weekend again, confident he won't come knocking on your door.
***
It's hot. Too hot. The heat wave that stretched out to over a week now. It's got him agitated, irritable. Impatient.
So he heads to the elevator and down to the basement. She doesn't even turn when the elevator dings, bent over in some slutty little shorts while loading up a dryer. He stands by the elevator, watching. Tucks away the anger that bubbles up when he thinks of someone else coming down and seeing her like this. He'd never let that happen.
She jumps when she turns around.
“Jesus!”
Then, as always, you try to scurry away. But he planned for this, blocking her only way out.
“Hiding from me?”
“No, why would I do that?”
“Too busy for me, then?”
That gets her to narrow her eyes at him.
“Why would I even think of making time for you?”
There she is. His pretty girl.
“Don't wanna see me anymore? Thought we were getting along.”
“You thought wrong. Thought I made that clear.”
She tries stepping around him, he mirrors her, broad frame unyielding.
“Not clear enough.”
She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath.
“I don't want you bothering me. That clear enough?”
“I don't believe you.”
He says plainly.
“You don't believe me?”
Her irritation grows. He sees it in the way her jaw clenches.
“You're a bad liar.”
“So I've been told.”
She doesn't even look at his face, just straight ahead to his chest. Like looking at his face would push her over the edge.
“You looked nice last night.”
“When did you-how? Nevermind, don't answer that. I need to go.”
Another attempt to pass him. Another block. She grits her teeth.
“You're aggravating.”
“So I've been told.”
He mocks her. She shoves at him—a gentle nudge really for his stature. His mind blanks for a moment. When's the last time a woman has touched him, he thinks, even like this?
He lets her slip by, nearly reaching the elevator. Nearly.
Then he hooks a finger into her belt loop and tugs.
“Where's my good girl?”
His hold keeps her in place. She still tries to pull away, reaching for the elevator button.
“I'm not your girl.”
Her fingertips graze the button when he tugs again, pulling her off balance, close enough for him to catch the faintest whiff of her perfume.
“Simon!”
She grabs at his wrist—not even able to fully wrap around him.
“Name sounds so nice coming out that pretty mouth.”
He mutters, more to herself than to her. His other hand pulls at her waistband. She's all protests and curses that he tunes out, too busy running a finger along the inside of the top of her shorts.
Everytime she half-heartedly pushes at his chest or scratches his arms, he tugs her closer, polishing the button of her shorts with his thumbs, fingers dipping just under her waistband, firm grip keeping her in place.
“Tell you what,”
He finally says, eyes still locked on where his hands are.
She pauses, her defiance flickering for a moment.
“Say you don't want this, and I'll stop.”
She pauses.
For a long time, she stares at him, her lips parting slightly like she's about to speak, but no words come out. Simon doesn’t flinch. Doesn’t move. Unnervingly, doesn’t even blink. His stillness makes her unnerved, he can see it in her eyes.
Eventually, he gets bored of waiting for her answer. He casually tugs at her tank top, looking down her shirt. She snatches the fabric away from him, holding it close to her chest, scandalized as if she wasnt just contemplating on fucking him.
“They're pretty.”
“What the fuck is wrong with you?”
This time when she steps back and he tugs at her shorts, she comes to him without much resistance.
“On paper? Nothing.”
When she puts her arms down, he still stares at her chest.
“For some reason, I don't believe that.”
He hums in acknowledgment, casually flicking at a raised nipple poking out her top. She slaps his hand away, hard.
“Would you stop that?”
She sternly admonishes him. He rests a hand on her hip, the pad of his thumb tracing lazy circles on the denim.
“Why aren't you leaving?”
“You won't let me!”
“Yeah,”
His murmurs, devoid of remorse.
“Elevator’s broke anyways.”
She snaps her head to her only way out.
“I just saw you use it.”
“I broke it.”
He gently turns her by the shoulders, coaxing her to the lift.
“Try it.”
She looks at him, unsure. His face is infuriatingly neutral, offering no hint of a joke. Slowly, she steps forward and presses the button.
The doors slide open, smooth and functional. Relief floods her chest, her path clear. She steps inside, pressing the button for her floor.
Before the doors can fully close, his boot wedges between them. The mechanism stutters, the doors bouncing off the leather before sliding open again.
“See? Broken.”
He steps between the doors, keeping them open, effectively trapping her into an even smaller space.
“You think you're funny.”
“Hilarious.”
He holds himself back from grabbing her face when her nostrils flare.
“What the fuck do you want from me?”
“Want you to play nice.”
The words roll off his tongue so smoothly, so audaciously, it takes her a moment to process. His gaze doesn’t waver, steady and unrelenting, locking her in place as effectively as the metal walls around them.
“Play nice?”
She echoes, her voice sharp, incredulous.
“Yeah,”
He says, a slight tilt of his head, as though he’s genuinely surprised she’s asking. His thumb brushes over his knuckles, a lazy, practiced motion that only adds to her irritation.
“And what the hell does that mean?”
He steps closer, closing what little space remains between them, the heat of him almost suffocating. “Means stop running, angel.”
The button clicks under his thumb, their floor lighting up. The doors slide shut with a groan, and he doesn’t look at her. Just faces forward like nothing happened. The lift jolts, shuddering upward. She presses herself against the wall, her movements awkward, trying to find a place in the tiny box where his heat doesn’t reach her.
“Thought I told you to stop running.”
He warns, staring straight ahead. His hand reaches out, clamps onto the back of her neck. Not rough, not quite gentle, but enough to stop her breath. She squirms away from him. It's enough to make his blood boil.
All this planning. All this waiting. If he lets her get away this time, he won't get another chance.
He waits for the elevator to slide perfectly between floors before hitting the emergency stop button. The jolt is harsh, the sudden silence worse.
“What are you doing?”
She asks, the words tumbling out.
“Making sure you listen this time.”
The quiet hum of the stopped lift vibrates between them, but it doesn’t drown out the sound of her breathing. She presses her back harder against the wall, but there’s nowhere to go. His hand grabs her face. It’s not rough, but there’s no softness in the gesture either. His thumb brushes along her jaw.
“Think you owe me an apology.
His voice is low, harsh, almost mean.
“What?”
“Ignoring me all this time. And for what? What did I do?”
“You-”
He cuts her off, pushing two fingers into her mouth.
“Didn't do anything. Suck.”
She bats her lashes at him, wide eyes looking up at him, and wraps her lips around his fingers.
“Nothing.”
Slowly, he slides his fingers in and out her mouth.
“Now look at us. Can't go on like this, only gets us in a mood. Is that what you want?”
He pulls his fingers out of her mouth and shoves them down her shorts, rolling her clit between his fingers.
“All pent up. No good for either of us.”
He leans down to murmur in her ear, watching as she melts under his touch.
As she opens her mouth to retort, he uses his other hand to stick another thick finger in her mouth.
“None of that.”
A loud beep from the intercom elevator interrupts their moment. She panics, trying to squirm away from him, pushing at his arms.
“Hello?”
A voice comes through the speaker.
Simon shuffles closer to her, practically pinning her against the corner of the elevator, slipping slick fingers into her.
“Yeah, just pressed the button by accident.”
“Alright. No problem.”
The voice on the other end replies before there is a click and they are alone again.
He watches as her eyes fill with panic and embarrassment. He feels for her, he didn't want this to happen here. Wanted to take her somewhere proper, like her bed, or bent over his counter.
The elevator suddenly jolts back into motion.
“Relax. There's no cameras here.”
He tries to calm her, pulling away and slipping his fingers out of her wetness before popping them into his mouth.
The elevator dings, and he steps out first, unhurried, as though nothing unusual had happened. A neighbor passes by, her gaze shifting from him to his girl trailing behind, her concern clear in the way her brow furrows.
"Everything alright?"
The neighbor asks, her voice hesitant, probing.
His girl’s breath catches, her answer quick but unsteady.
“Mhm. All good.”
Her tone betrays her. Too high. Too quick. The neighbor lingers for a second too long, glancing between them, before the doors slide closed, cutting off any chance for further questioning.
He walks ahead, straight to her door. She follows, curling into herself like if she made herself small enough, she could just disappear.
He stops just short of her door. When he finally turns, his eyes lock onto hers. Her eyes bounce between him and her door.
“What are you doing?”
“Not done. Think I’m gonna let my girl go home like this?”
Her lips part, like she might argue, but she hesitates, biting down on her lower lip instead. Her fingers curl around the doorknob. She turns it, the latch clicking softly.
The door creaks open, a darkened room greeting them on the other side. She steps over the threshold but stops, half-turning toward him. Her body is halfway in, halfway out, caught in the tension of indecision.
“Go inside.”
He says, his voice quiet but firm. She steps further inside, her back to him now. When she hesitates again, he walks forward, using his body to herd her into her place.
“Nice place.”
He kicks off his shoes and flops on the couch, it squeaks under him. A small flimsy thing. He'll get her something nicer when this one inevitably breaks from bending her over the arm too many times.
“Sit.”
Back in the comfort of her own home, she regains a little confidence, mumbling something under her breath while moving towards him.
“Didn't catch that angel, say it again?”
She huffs, and sits on the edge of the couch, still playing hard to get.
“Nothing.”
He doesn't have to reach too far to snatch her and maneuver her into his lap.
“Say it with your chest, love. You know, communication is important in a relationship.”
The corners of her lips twitch upwards before pouting again.
“We're not in a relationship.”
His head tilts, studying her with mock seriousness.
“Feeling alright? Not the most coherent thing you’ve ever said.”
She narrows her eyes at him.
“Female hysteria, very dire.”
He leans back, taking her with him, pressing her back against his chest.
“Heard treatment is particularly intense. Being hung upside down, leeches on the abdomen, forced orgasms.”
She tilts her head back, looking up at him.
“Brutal. Wonder if they still make house calls for that sort of thing.”
“No need, I'm happy to help. Prone bone.”
She raises a brow.
“Pro bono, you mean.”
“Yeah, that too.”
Her snort gets cut off with a gasp when he lifts her hips up with his, tucking his thumbs into the sides of her shorts and shucking them down.
“I like these.”
He snaps at the thin elastic of her underwear.
"Careful,"
She warns, her voice breathy.
"Those are my favorite pair."
“Mine too, might nick ‘em.”
When she rolls against his hardening length and snickers at him freezing up.
“Don't think they'd fit you.”
One swift move and his pants are around his thighs. He ignores her complaining about having his bare ass on her couch and holds her hips, guiding her slick panties against his length. She laughs nervously while he moves her hips to grind her up and down him,
“Jesus, just goes on forever, doesn't it?”
“Based on my experience, seems like you enjoy a challenge.”
Her hands look for something to anchor herself, his wrists being the closest thing she can reach.
“Do I?”
Her eyes lock onto his, pupils blown out, hungry. He slowly, so slowly, moves a hand from her hip to stomach and creeps down, fingers moving the dainty fabric out of the way and-
There's a knock.

"And Moshe said to YHVH, please, my Lord, I am not a man of words, neither yesterday nor ereyesterday, neither now when You speak to Your servant, for I am of heavy mouth and heavy tongue."
[Exodus 4:10]
"And Moshe spoke before YHVH to say, "The children of Yisrael did not listen to me, and how will Pharaoh listen to me when I have uncircumcised lips?""
[Exodus 6:12]
I've been thinking for a while about the wording of "עֲרַ֥ל שְׂפָתָֽיִם" in reference to Moshe Rabbeinu. It's often translated as "tongue-tied" or something similar, but "עֲרַ֥ל" literally means "uncircumcised", which, when not used to refer to a literally uncircumcised penis, is used to refer to something that has not finished developing (the main other usage is used in reference to crops that are not yet harvested). That made me think that "עֲרַ֥ל שְׂפָתָֽיִם" and " כְבַד־פֶּ֛ה וּכְבַ֥ד לָשׁ֖וֹן" are referring to actual physical differences in Moshe's mouth and not things like a stammer or an anxiety. "Tongue tie" in a medical setting actually refers to when the frenulum is shorter/tighter than usual, so it is an actual physical difference, but it has nothing to do with the lips, and Moshe says he has 'uncircumcised' lips and a heavy tongue and mouth, not an 'uncircumcised' tongue.
So, I settled on a cleft lip and palate. A cleft lip and palate is a fairly common condition, and nowadays it's usually easily corrected with access to medical care, but of course in ancient times, Moshe would not have had access to such care and thus it would feasibly have impacted his speech abilities. In having a cleft lip and palate, his lips would literally be unformed, thus, 'uncircumcised', and the anatomical differences would make him feel like his tongue and mouth are heavy due to his difficulties communicating. A cleft lip and palate can also be comorbid with congenital hearing loss, and I know many people (including myself) interpet Moshe as having had some form of healing loss, as well. Additionally, feeding as an infant would have been difficult for Moshe if he had had a cleft lip and palate, so it would also explain why Pharaoh's daughter was so anxious to find him a suitable wetnurse, because it would have taken a lot of technique and patience.

every time i need to motivate myself to do something i just remind myself that i was denied a perfect score on my junior year book project because i have a lisp and a shortened frenulum -> i kid you not, he said to me [when i asked] "i don't know, you didn't speak clearly?" YOU DON'T SAY 💀 and then the anger keeps me working
anyway this is a character study for early Charles and Edwin, because i have literally never written british ghost boys and i want more content of their orb forms [also y'all were so sweet on my last dbd posts, so i wanna make sure i get the fic just right <3] ↑ basically, think the first scene where Pearl gets poofed in SU -> ao3 fic: here <-
It was odd.
Edwin had spent far more time being dead than he had alive- so he was well aware that only a scarce few sensations remained prevalent in a ghost's nervous system.
Pain, for one, seemed especially common. At least to him- like it was attracted to the mere homophone of his last name.
Well. Misery did like company, to be fair.
On the other hand, feeling any sort of temperature highly depended on extenuating circumstances.
Charles seemed like the exception to a lot of these so called circumstances.
"Edwin, what the hell is that thing?" Crystal cuts in to his thoughts, damn near tugging her curly hair out, "Where's Charles?"
The warm ball of light hovering in his palm bobs as if to say hello.
It's a motion so endearingly Charles, especially when in a room of his own demise, that the psychic immediately keys in. Slowly, oh so slowly, she releases her poor hair- her expression dumbfounded.
And she pokes.
"Crystal!" Edwin sputters, aghast at her frustratingly in character impulsivity. No wonder the two got along so well.
He's about to scold her, and really lay in as to why touching any supernatural entity she didn't understand the delicate complexities of was a bad idea, when he catches sight of the horrified crumple to her brow.
...ah.
Right.
Crystal hadn't been in the room- despite only being a few turns behind them- when Charles had.. what would be the appropriate term for this? Discorporated? Become even more incorporeal? Unembodied?
Poofed?
Regardless, she had likely saw the events that Edwin had been too slow to stop.
Inadequacy clamps around something squishy in his chest- which is weird, considering as a ghost he shouldn't have anything squishy anymore. But- again. Charles.
The room they were in had a splat of ghostly blue in the center of it, around the perfect size for a blow to the head.
With a single golden earring laying in the center.
Edwin doesn't think ectoplasm will be particularly harmful to her, but she's already reaching into the mess before he can warn her to be careful for once.
Warmth floods his blue stained gloves as Charles shrinks against his palm.
"She's not scared of you," he mutters to the poor thing, bringing his other hand around to [gently- very gently] brush his knuckles against that soft light, "She's just worried."
And with every right.
If he was correct [and the chances of the opposite were very slim] in what she'd seen, it was more than likely that the psychic was now privy to the horrific imagery of Charles being bludgeoned.
This was supposed to be a relatively easy case- a warmup of sorts now that they had reclaimed their office space.. how did it all go so wrong?
A simple retrieval case, that's all this was supposed to be. And now..
Again, unprecedented warmth rushes through his form- this time originating from his nose. The little orb had floated up the scant few inches between them to bump softly against it.
How was it fair for someone so impossibly sweet to be dealt such a cruel hand?
"...I'm supposed to be comforting you," Edwin finds himself huffing, the words a touch too watery for his liking.
"Ugh.. even like this you two are disgustingly domestic."
In Crystal's hand dangles Charles' earring, cleaned shiny again with obvious care.
"I'll get the stain out of your sweater back at the office."
That's all he can offer right now, when his mind is already so cluttered with how to keep this delicate form safe. He lets Crystal slip the earring into one of his pockets carefully, his hands either full or stained with the ghostly blue of-
"What happened," the psychic bites out, hesitantly reaching for the little ball of light again- now that she's prepared, "-to the asshole that did this?"
Edwin side-eyes the much larger blue splatter on the opposite wall, before returning his attention to the rather adorable scene of Charles baubling up and down in his palm.
"He finished his business."
[+-+-+]
You know, you'd think existing as an incorporeal being would exempt you from most normal human ailments.
But noOo.
Charles' chest felt unbearably tight. His breaths, breaths that he shouldn't even need anymore, puff uselessly into the suddenly yawning space in front of him.
There's a stupid whistle on the end of them, a pained whimper he was just a little too preoccupied at the moment to be humiliated over.
Nothing was- everything was-
Fuck. Fuck.
Barely a meter away from the.. rather new ghost, his even newer friend stood skewered on a bar of iron.
It was a fancy thing, his frazzled mind latches onto. Pointed in a sort of spade-like tip with winding and delicate vine patterns.
Ornate, Edwin would probably call it.
If he wasn't bloody impaled.
"Charles-" oh fuck, okay, he never wanted to hear that wheeze again, "Charles, I'm okay."
He couldn't help it- he hadn't been a ghost for particularly long yet, maybe two, three years?- but in the time he'd known Edwin he hadn't yet lost his fragile hold on his tone.
"YOU CALL THIS OKAY!?"
Until today.
Edwin shushes him- though not cruelly.
"Yes, Charles, and everything will be fine. I've read about this."
Why would he- that did sound like something he'd do, actually.
Right up there with yanking an iron skewer out of his own chest.
"Edwin-"
Charles lurches forward, already pressing his hands to the gaping hole left behind like he could stem the bleeding.
Though it wasn't really bleeding? It was more.. wispy blue.. smog. Or some kind of jelly? It was hard to tell, even with his hands coated in the stuff.
Slender, cold fingers grip around his wrists- unsteady but grounding as they give the younger ghost a firm shake.
"I don't have enough time to explain," Edwin says, tone apologetic and strained, "I don't know what- exactly is going to happen.. but I hopefully won't be gone too long. Okay? Charles?"
"Mate- what!?"
His new friend, perhaps his only friend, coughs out a glob of the blue smoke- jelly- stuff and then abruptly goes limp. Charles scrabbles to keep him upright, trying not to focus on how unbearably cold he suddenly feels.
He hates the cold.
"Edwin? Edwin!" he chokes, before the older ghost warps like he got sucked into a void.
In his place, is a simple ball of floating light.
[+-+-+]
"Jesus Christ, Edwin."
The matching stares of horror were expected, to be honest. And deserved.
"Poor Charles.." Niko breathes out, delicately cupping the little ball of light between her palms, "No wonder he's so protective of you.."
And that's also deserved.
Because now that he thinks back on it, that must of been well and truly terrifying for Charles to witness. It was terrifying to experience too.
Edwin didn't know what would happen after he.. poofed. Niko chose that term- apparently it was some pop culture reference? Either way, he had no way of knowing that he wouldn't wind up back in hell.
Charles hadn't let him out of his sight for almost two years after that, and his need for constant tactility had ramped up to 20.
"I'm not going anywhere, Charles, you can let go of my sleeve."
..maybe he could've been a bit more understanding in the aftermath... all things considered.
Edwin thumbs over the gold star earring in his pocket.
They were all gathered back in the office, on various pieces of furniture or floor. Or air- if you were a floating ball of unembodied light.
"How long do these little.. forms typically last?" Crystal asks, though it's clear her nonchalance is only a front.
"It depends on how severe the injury is," he indulges, then rethinks his answer, "I think."
"You think?"
"This has only happened a handful more times in the 30 years we've been partnered. Sometimes it lasts no more than an hour, other times it can take as long as a month. I'm afraid we have no way of knowing."
Niko coos under her breath as Charles bumps against Edwin's cheek.
"Aww.. you keep track."
He raises an eyebrow, confused, even as his finger comes up- devoid of his stained gloves- to merely make sure Charles' form is holding strong.
"Of course I do. Why wouldn't I?"
For some reason, his response only makes Crystal throw her head back and groan- quite dramatically too, at that.
"Disgusting," she huffs, adamant even in the face of Niko's protests to the contrary.
Edwin is so caught up in his confusion and vague amusement of their conversation that almost doesn't notice when Charles floats over to Edwin's other side- over the armrest.
At least- not until he starts flickering.
Immediately panic seizes in his chest, and he's jerking forward to catch the small thing between his hands. He's gentle, of course, even as he scowls at the idiocy his best friend is currently displaying.
"Need I remind you what happened the last time you tried to reform early?" Edwin hisses, and subsequently feels like the worst person in the world when Charles seems to wilt in his palms.
Because he knows why his partner is so desperate, alright, he knows.
But...
"I wish you'd let yourself rest, Charles."
It's not just the two of them anymore.
As reluctant to the idea of it Edwin was at first, he's come to greatly appreciate having the two girls in their corner. Crystal, in the way she strong arms him into new perspectives and Niko's near endless optimism.
It's.. nice.
Charles Rowland is the best person he knows.
"Let me be the one to protect you for once... please?"

One of my favourite 2D Doof scenes just because I like listening to him (or actually both Doofs) rambling over stuff, here in the German version! <3
A few words on this; when I imagine scenarios with him in my head I'm actually never quite sure if I imagine him talking in German or English, in my mind it just kind of all blurs together since I'm so used to using both languages in my everyday life at this point. However, I think for the most part I imagine him with the sound of his German voice and his pronunciation, probably also because I'm more used to it (for PnF I always kinda preferred the German dub, I don't know why exactly, it really can't be nostalgia since I didn't watch it as a kid, but maybe just for the childhood show vibes). I like the original as well though (and sometimes kind of mix them up in my mind), I feel like Dan voiced the two Doofs with a bit more nuance, making 2D Doof speak a bit slower and maybe a tiny little bit deeper, to give him a bit more of an intimidating aura.
Another detail about his accent that might be interesting especially for non German speakers: In the original, Heinz' home country Drusselstein is a parody mostly on Germany/German-speaking countries, and on a few occasions, characters are heard speaking some German words. Doofenshmirtz himself is supposed to have a sort-of German accent as well. In the German dub, this was mostly replaced with Russian, for example that once scene where little Heinz is dressed as a lawn gnome and his father yells at him "Bewegen Sie nicht!", which is a grammatically incorrect way of saying "Don't move!" (correct ways would for example be "Beweg dich nicht!" or "Nicht bewegen!"), while in the German dub he yells in Russian "Не шевелиться!" - in latin letters something like "Nje shevelitsja!" - (which I believe is also grammatically incorrect lol).
Doof's accent seems also inspired by what the (stereo-)typical Russian (or generally Slavic) accent sounds to German people. However it doesn't lean very strongly into it, the most notable thing is that he rolls his Rs quite a bit stronger than it's common for German speakers, otherwise he speaks pretty much standard German. For example his pronunciation of the "ch" sound isn't really emphasised at all, which often tends to be associated with a Russian accent.
Also another small note about accents in general, I don't know how common it still is nowadays for people to think that German speakers all speak with a strongly rolled R, but we actually don't. Of course it may depend on the region or specific dialects, some people also just happen to naturally speak with a more rolled R due to their individual mouth/throat anatomy, but in the standard way of speaking in both Germany and Austria at least, it's not really a thing. We roll our R differently than English speakers, but it's also not that very "full" rolled R that you may hear in languages like Spanish. I myself, despite being Austrian and growing up speaking the Austrian variant of German, am physically struggling to roll my Rs because my tongue frenulum is literally too short to do it properly. The R pronunciation was always my biggest challenge in my Spanish and Russian classes (luckily my teachers weren't strict with it as long as you tried). But yeah, I just wanted to clarify that Doofenshmirtz' way of speaking isn't what the average German speaker would sound like, also I just find languages a fascinating topic to ramble about :D

I wish I weren't ashamed of my voice.
I wish that I could pronounce things the right way because it would make conversation easier. I wish I didn't spend half my life being pulled out of class because of a problem I didn't even realize existed until they told me I sounded wrong.
I wish I was more than 80% accurate, and I wish it stayed consistent instead of jumbling when I'm excited.
I wish my tongue frenulum was the right size to roll back in my throat and get the actual sound I need.
I wish people would stop correcting me on words I say wrong, like "world". I only get self conscious about it if it's pointed out to me, if you make me repeat it until it's satisfactory before we move on with the damn conversation.
I wish I wasn't "ehlmow fudd" and I wish people would stop ask if I was born here, raised here, where my parents are from, what's my accent, am I British?
I wish those boys last year didn't keep pestering me and the only other person I ever met who sounded like me, asking if we were dating, do we like each other, those guys were dicks in general.
I wish I didn't stutter and sound like a broken record when I get excited. "And- and-and- and-" and I wish I my throat didn't close up like a lump when I'm having a panic attack, when I'm stressed or trying to communicate how upset I am to somebody, I wish my vocal chords didn't fail when I need them most.
I wish my voice was deeper, was smoother, didn't crack, wasn't squeaky or wrong, I wish I was less nasal, sounded less like a stoner when I was in 3rd grade, I wish my family didn't do the uwu voice to make fun of me, I wish the uwu voice didn't exist, I wish I could sing, I wish people wouldn't make fun of me, I wish didn't have to repeat myself over and over and-and-and ovuh.

Laser Frenectomy Explained: Benefits for Tongue and Lip Tie Correction in Children
If your child has difficulty breastfeeding, speaking clearly, or moving their tongue or lips freely, a laser frenectomy for Tongue and Lip Tie Correction in children may be the gentle solution you’ve been searching for. This modern, minimally invasive dental treatment uses laser technology to quickly and safely release tight tissue—called a frenulum—that may be restricting oral movement. Understanding this procedure and its benefits can help Pearland parents feel confident when seeking care for their child’s oral development.
Recognizing Tongue and Lip Ties A tongue tie (ankyloglossia) or lip tie happens when the thin tissue connecting the tongue or upper lip to the mouth is too tight or short, limiting natural movement. In infants, this often causes trouble latching during breastfeeding. In older children, it may lead to speech delays, difficulty eating, or even dental spacing issues. If you notice these signs, a pediatric dental evaluation is the first step.
How Laser Frenectomy Works Unlike traditional surgical methods, a laser frenectomy uses a focused beam of light to gently cut and release the tight tissue. The procedure is quick, with minimal bleeding, no stitches, and significantly faster healing time. Most children feel little to no discomfort during and after the treatment, and in many cases, improvements in feeding or speech are noticeable almost immediately.
Aftercare and Recovery Following the procedure, your dentist will guide you on simple stretching exercises to prevent reattachment and support healing. Most children can resume normal eating and speaking within a day or two. It's important to attend follow-up visits to ensure proper recovery and full range of motion.
Why Early Treatment Matters When treated early, tongue and lip ties are much easier to correct and can prevent long-term problems with speech, feeding, and oral hygiene. Laser frenectomy is a safe and highly effective solution with long-lasting benefits for growing children.
If you’re looking for gentle, expert care, a pediatric dentist experienced in laser frenectomy near Pearland,TX can provide the support your child needs for better oral health, speech, and comfort—one small procedure can make a big difference.

Best Dentist for Tongue Thrusting in Chennai
Tongue thrusting might appear harmless at first, but this common oral habit can gradually lead to significant dental and speech issues if left untreated. It affects both children and adults, often going unnoticed until the symptoms—such as a lisp, misaligned teeth, or ineffective orthodontic treatment—become apparent. Understanding what tongue thrusting is, its symptoms, causes, and available treatments is the first step toward lasting correction.
If you or your child is dealing with this issue, finding the right specialist is crucial. Fortunately, Chennai has several experienced dentists and orthodontists who are highly skilled in diagnosing and treating tongue thrusting. With proper care and consistent treatment, this condition is absolutely manageable and can be corrected effectively.
What is Tongue Thrusting?
Tongue thrusting occurs when the tongue pushes forward against or between the front teeth during speaking, swallowing, or even when resting. This unnatural positioning can interfere with normal dental development, causing an open bite, misaligned teeth, or difficulties with speech articulation.
While it's most commonly observed in children, adults can also develop or retain this habit, especially if it wasn't treated earlier. Early diagnosis and intervention can prevent long-term complications, including the relapse of orthodontic treatments such as braces.
Common Signs and Symptoms of Tongue Thrusting
Tongue thrusting can be subtle at first, but some common signs to look out for include:
The tongue visibly pushes forward while swallowing, speaking, or at rest.
Presence of a lisp, especially with “S” or “Z” sounds.
Difficulty with certain speech sounds or unclear speech.
An open bite or gaps between the front teeth.
Chronic mouth breathing or lips that remain open at rest.
Eating may appear slow, messy, or awkward due to poor tongue control.
If any of these symptoms are observed, it’s wise to consult a specialist early. Timely treatment can prevent the need for more complex dental or orthodontic procedures later on.
What Causes Tongue Thrusting?
Understanding what causes tongue thrusting can guide effective treatment. Several factors may contribute to this condition:
Prolonged Thumb Sucking or Pacifier Use: These habits can train the tongue to push forward over time, altering its natural position.
Chronic Nasal Congestion: Allergies or frequent colds can lead to mouth breathing, encouraging tongue thrusting.
Tongue-tie (Ankyloglossia): A short lingual frenulum can limit tongue mobility and disrupt natural resting posture.
Poor Oral Muscle Coordination: In some individuals, weak or improperly functioning orofacial muscles contribute to abnormal tongue posture.
Speech and Swallowing Pattern Disorders: Inappropriate swallowing techniques or learned behaviors can play a role.
Why You Need a Specialist for Tongue Thrusting
Treating tongue thrusting is not just about dental alignment—it’s about correcting a complex interaction between muscle control, speech, and dental health. That’s why choosing a dentist who specializes in orofacial habits and works closely with orthodontists and speech therapists is essential.
A qualified dentist or orthodontist may use various tools like:
Myofunctional Appliances
Tongue Cribs
Speech Therapy Techniques
Habit-Correcting Exercises
These treatment methods are designed to retrain the tongue's resting position and swallowing patterns, often in collaboration with speech-language pathologists.

Laser vs. Traditional Orthodontics What’s the Difference
Laser vs. Traditional Orthodontics What’s the Difference
Evolving from conventional metal braces, the field of orthodontic medicine has made significant advancements. Today’s highest technologies include laser-assisted procedures. As technology advances in the field of orthodontics, so do the options available for patients seeking to achieve straighter and healthier smiles. One of the most talked-about innovations in recent years is the introduction of lasers in orthodontics, as it is a less invasive and typically quicker method than what was commonly practiced before. But what is the difference between laser orthodontics and traditional orthodontics? Let’s see both modalities and compare their techniques, benefits, and limitations so that an informed decision may be made.
Traditional Orthodontics
1. The Mechanics of Traditional Orthodontics:
The traditional field of orthodontics consists of methods that use metal braces, ceramic braces, or clear aligners in correcting the dental state. Dry braces have been in existence for more than a century and are one of the most effective treatment methods for many dental problems, crooked to overbite, underbite, and overcrowding.
Braces apply constant pressure over time to teeth until they gently shift to the appropriate position. The system consists of brackets attached to the teeth, an archwire, and elastics (bands), which maintain the force needed to move the teeth. This process typically lasts for 18 months up to 2 years, depending on how much misalignment is present.
2. Key Features of Traditional Orthodontics:
Durability: Metal braces are the strong and the cruder of all braces for it can manage complex orthodontic cases.
Cost: Traditional braces are usually cheaper compared to newer technologies, such as clear aligners or laser treatments.
Effective for Severe Cases: This will be especially useful for very severe problems in the teeth that would require enormous shifting.
Maintenance: Requires frequent visits to the orthodontist for adjustments and also tightening of wires. It produces challenges in oral hygiene due to the brackets and wires trapping food and plaque.
3. Limitations of Traditional Orthodontics:
Traditional braces are very effective but have several drawbacks:
Appearance: Most adults who have braces often feel self-conscious about joining metal braces to their teeth for an extended period.
Comfort: Further metal wires and brackets often make braces uncomfortable. Adjustments can cause pain, while the wires sometimes rub against the gums or cheeks.
Treatment Duration: Treatment itself may take quite long depending on the problems involved, and patients must return frequently for adjustments, a situation that is too inconvenient for some.
Laser-Assisted Orthodontics
1. What is Laser-Assisted Orthodontics?
The orthodontics take the aid of lasers in an advanced technique known as laser-assisted orthodontics. Laser can be applied in procedures to accelerate tooth movement, reshape gum tissues, or prepare an oral cavity for orthodontic appliances, like braces and aligners. The most common types of lasers that are used in dentistry are diode lasers, which have been proven to be safe and effective in many kinds of dental procedures.
Lasers are typically used adjunctively in conjunction with conventional or aligner-based treatments, rather than as a method for orthodontics on its own. Yet, the role of lasers in orthodontics is developing owing to the use of the ability for speeding treatment, comfort, and outcomes.
2. Applications of Laser Orthodontics:
Gum Contouring (Gingivectomy): The most common use of lasers in gum esthetics is for the excess gum tissue removal. If a person’s gums envelop or cover the teeth too much such that they make the teeth seem short or disfigured, it makes aesthetic sense using lasers and improving the fit of brackets or aligners over teeth.
Frenectomy: It is possible to remove a frenulum by laser-the little fold of tissue that limits movement-when it creates gaps between teeth or difficulty in speaking. This is fast; with lasers, it is almost entirely painless.
Accelerating Tooth Movement: Research shows that laser energy stimulates cellular activity about the teeth and jawbone, which helps with the speed of orthodontic treatment. They probably speed up the process of moving the teeth into new positions by enhancing the remodeling of bone.
Exposure of Impacted Teeth: When a tooth is impacted (stuck under gum), lasers can be used to remove gum tissue and expose the tooth for orthodontic treatment. This is efficient for patients with teething problems, especially those whose teeth are not yet completely erupted.
3. Key Features of Laser-Assisted Orthodontics:
Precision: Lasers offer extreme precision, allowing orthodontists to perform more delicate procedures without damaging surrounding tissues.
Reduced Discomfort: It is less invasive than scalpels and other traditional means. This entails reduced pain, bleeding, and recovery periods after most procedures.
Shorter Treatment Times: By speeding up bone remodeling and helping to move teeth faster, laser technology can shorten overall treatment duration.
Hygiene: Since lasers cauterize tissues as they cut, there’s a reduced risk of infection compared to traditional surgical procedures.
4. Limitations of Laser Orthodontics:
Laser orthodontics entails myriad benefits, but did have some drawbacks, such as:
Cost: Laser treatments are generally on the expensive side when compared to the rest of orthodontics; this is because the equipment costs a lot of money, as does the knowledge to operate it.
Limited Availability: Not all orthodontic offices are fitted with lasers, so some patients may need to seek specialists or larger practice groups for laser-assisted orthodontics.
Not a Standalone Treatment: Lasers are used for most part of other orthodontic treatment. This means that the patient will still have to use braces or aligners to achieve an optimal orthodontic result.
Comparing Laser and Traditional Orthodontics
Effectiveness:
Both conventional orthodontics as well as laser-assisted treatments are really effective. Conventional braces would still be the solution of choice for edge cases where a lot of movement is required. Although laser orthodontics help in making treatment faster and more comfortable, they are more of an adjunct than a substitute to conventional methods.
Comfort:
Laser surgery would without doubt be less painful and traumatic than the normal surgical procedure. Lasers require smaller incisions, therefore, resulting in much less tissue damage. Very little swelling, bleeding, or pain associated with the laser procedures makes it more enticing for some patients. However, with traditional braces, it is mostly discomfort that describes the patient’s experience at adjustment appointments.
Aesthetic Appeal:
They are visible and usually not very encouraging for patients. With lasers, the gum lines can be perfected for a more discreet option, such as clear aligners. Patients who care a lot about looks might want to combine treatment time with laser gum contouring alone with clear aligners.
Cost:
Normal braces are quite cheaper than other treatment options that use laser technology. The difference might not be so significant in the case-specific areas. Laser treatment generally adds extra expenditure to the treatment cost because of technology included.
Treatment Time:
On the other hand, laser-assisted orthodontics can reduce treatment time, particularly where lasers are employed to speed up tooth movement or prepare the gums for orthodontic devices. While conventional braces work with the same efficacy, their wearing time is always longer, and in some severe cases, it gets even more lengthy.
Conclusion
When choosing between laser and traditional orthodontics, it’s essential to consider factors like the complexity of the case, cost, treatment time, and patient comfort. Traditional orthodontics remains a reliable and effective option, particularly for complex cases, while laser-assisted treatments offer enhancements that can improve patient experience and speed up the process. Many patients may benefit from a combination of both approaches, using lasers to complement traditional braces or aligners.
Ultimately, the best option depends on your individual needs, the severity of your dental issues, and your orthodontist’s recommendations. Consult with an experienced orthodontist to explore the best treatment plan for you.

Tongue Tie and Speech Development: Why Early Intervention Matters
As parents, we eagerly await our child’s first words and celebrate every milestone in their speech development. However, for some children, a condition called tongue tie (ankyloglossia) can create challenges in speaking clearly.
Understanding how tongue tie affects speech and why early intervention is crucial can make a world of difference in your child’s communication skills and overall confidence.
What is Tongue Tie?
Tongue tie occurs when the thin piece of tissue under the tongue (the lingual frenulum) is shorter or tighter than usual, restricting the tongue’s movement. This condition can affect a child’s ability to breastfeed, eat, and, most importantly, speak. While some cases are mild and go unnoticed, others can significantly impact speech development.
How Does Tongue Tie Affect Speech?
The tongue plays a vital role in forming sounds and words. When its movement is restricted, children may struggle with:
Pronouncing certain sounds like “t,” “d,” “l,” “r,” and “s.”
Moving their tongue to the roof of their mouth or sticking it out.
Speaking clearly, which can lead to frustration or social challenges.
For example, a child with tongue tie might replace “rabbit” with “wabbit” or have difficulty saying “th” sounds. Over time, these speech issues can affect their confidence and ability to communicate effectively.
Why Early Intervention is Crucial?
Early intervention is key to addressing tongue tie and preventing long-term speech problems. Here’s why:
Prevents Habit Formation:
Children learn speech patterns early in life. If tongue tie is left untreated, they may develop habits to compensate for their limited tongue movement, making it harder to correct later.
Boosts Confidence:
Clear speech is essential for social interactions. Addressing tongue tie early can help children communicate confidently with peers and adults.
Supports Overall Development:
Speech is closely tied to cognitive and emotional development. Early treatment ensures your child stays on track with their developmental milestones.
Signs Your Child’s Speech Issues May Be Linked to Tongue Tie
If your child is experiencing speech delays or difficulties, here are some signs that tongue tie might be the cause:
Trouble pronouncing specific sounds or words.
Difficulty lifting the tongue to the roof of the mouth or moving it side to side.
A noticeable “heart shape” at the tip of the tongue when sticking it out.
Frustration or avoidance of speaking due to communication challenges.
If you notice these signs, it’s important to consult a pediatrician, dentist, or speech therapist for an evaluation.
Treatment Options: Tongue Tie Surgery and Beyond
The most common treatment for tongue tie is a tongue tie operation, also known as a frenectomy. This simple procedure involves releasing the tight or short frenulum to improve tongue mobility. There are two main methods:
Laser Frenectomy: A quick, minimally invasive procedure that uses laser technology to remove the tissue.
Scalpel Frenectomy: A traditional method where a scalpel is used to cut the frenulum.
Both methods are safe and effective, with most children experiencing immediate improvements in tongue movement.
After the tongue tie surgery, some children may benefit from speech therapy to retrain their tongue and improve articulation. Exercises like tongue stretches and sound practice can further enhance their speech development.
Conclusion: Act Early for Your Child’s Speech Development
Tongue tie is a common but often overlooked condition that can significantly impact speech development. By recognizing the signs and seeking early intervention, you can help your child overcome these challenges and set them up for success in communication and beyond.
If you suspect your child has tongue tie, don’t wait—schedule a consultation with a qualified specialist today. Whether it’s a tongue tie operation or speech therapy, taking action now can make a lasting difference in your child’s life.

Diastema: Causes, Treatments and Why It Matters
Tumblr media
Diastema is the term used to describe a noticeable gap between two teeth, most commonly the upper front teeth. While it’s a common dental feature that many embrace, others may feel self-conscious about it. Understanding the causes and treatment options can help you decide whether to celebrate your diastema or explore corrective measures.
What Causes Diastema?
Diastema can occur for various reasons, ranging from genetics to lifestyle habits. Below are some of the most common causes:
1. Genetics
If your parents or grandparents had gaps in their teeth, you might have inherited this trait. Genetics play a significant role in tooth size and jaw alignment, both of which can contribute to diastema.
2. Mismatch Between Jaw and Teeth Size
When your jaw is larger than the size of your teeth, it creates excess space that results in gaps.
3. Thumb Sucking
A childhood habit like thumb sucking can push the front teeth outward, creating gaps over time.
4. Tongue Thrusting
An incorrect swallowing reflex where the tongue pushes against the front teeth can contribute to diastema.
5. Gum Disease
Periodontal disease, which affects the gums and supporting bone, can lead to gaps as teeth lose their anchorage.
6. Oversized Labial Frenulum
The labial frenulum is the tissue connecting the upper lip to the gums. When it’s oversized or tight, it can pull the front teeth apart.
Is Diastema a Problem?
For many people, diastema is merely a cosmetic concern. However, in some cases, it may pose oral health challenges, such as:
Food Trapping: Gaps can trap food particles, increasing the risk of plaque buildup and cavities.
Speech Issues: Large gaps may contribute to speech difficulties, such as a lisp.
Gum Health: Gaps can expose gums to bacteria, heightening the risk of gum disease.
While diastema doesn’t always require treatment, it’s essential to consult a dentist to determine whether the gap is impacting your oral health.
Treatment Options for Diastema
If you decide to close the gap, several dental treatments are available:
1. Orthodontics
Braces or clear aligners like Invisalign can effectively move teeth closer together over time. Orthodontics is ideal for those with significant gaps or other alignment issues.
2. Dental Bonding
Dental bonding involves applying a tooth-colored resin to the teeth, filling the gap quickly and affordably. It’s a popular option for small gaps.
3. Veneers
Veneers are custom-made shells that cover the front surface of teeth, providing a seamless and natural look. They’re a great choice for those looking to enhance their overall smile.
4. Frenectomy
If an oversized labial frenulum is the culprit, a frenectomy (minor surgery to reduce or remove the tissue) can allow the teeth to move closer together naturally.
5. Dental Implants or Bridges
If the gap is due to a missing tooth, implants or bridges can restore your smile and improve functionality.
The Benefits of Closing a Diastema
Closing a diastema isn’t just about aesthetics—it can offer several practical advantages:
Enhanced Appearance: A gap-free smile often boosts self-confidence.
Improved Function: Closing gaps can reduce food traps and make chewing easier.
Better Oral Health: Properly aligned teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of decay and gum disease.
Speech Improvement: Closing large gaps can address speech impediments caused by misalignment.
Embracing Your Diastema
While many choose to close their diastema, others view it as a unique and attractive feature. In some cultures, a gap between the teeth is considered a symbol of beauty, luck, or charm. Celebrities like Madonna, Lauren Hutton, and Elijah Wood have famously embraced their diastemas, inspiring others to do the same.
When to See a Dentist
If you’re considering diastema treatment, it’s essential to consult a dental professional. They can evaluate your oral health and recommend the most suitable options based on your needs and goals. Early treatment is particularly important if gum disease or functional issues are contributing to the gap.
Final Thoughts
Whether you love your diastema or want to explore ways to close it, the choice is personal. Understanding the causes and treatment options can help you make an informed decision. If you’re ready to transform your smile, schedule a consultation with your dentist today.
Diastema doesn’t define your smile—you do.
