The Post-Halloween Contest

In the early nineties, my youthful mistakes had caught up to me and I was broke. I was two months behind on rent, trapped completely alone in a shit job that barely covered the bills. No friends, no family, no one. Solitude didn’t bother me as an introvert, but life was still a struggle. So much so that I scavenged discarded cigarettes butts from the street to feel a small relief from the grim reality of life.

Now, I can’t remember the exact year. Might’ve been ‘92 or ‘93. But the day is etched into my brain until dementia absolves me from my memories or my life meets a bitter end. It was a stone-cold November day, and my unpaid bills meant no warmth awaited me at home.

That day, the 12th of November, I made a stupid decision. As I trudged back home from my shitty delivery job, I gathered as many pieces of paper as I could find in the trash or on the street. Yeah, I was about to make a campfire inside my apartment and risk the lives of every poor soul in my complex. Desperation does drive people to madness, and those of you who’ve experienced the tortures of prolonged hunger, cold, and frustration might understand my plight.

Just as I was about to ignite my makeshift campfire, an ad in a crumpled newspaper caught my eye. It read something along the lines:

“Post-Halloween Head Carvers Wanted. Free contest. Top Prizes $500, $300, $150. All Participants Get $25. Address: xxx. 13th Nov. 2100~”

The prospect of earning $25 just for participating in a pumpkin carving contest, with the potential to win hundreds more, was too enticing to ignore. That glimmer of hope may have saved my life and those of my neighbors at that time.

The following day, my shitty job didn’t seem that bad after all. I knew that that night, Friday 13th, I’d earn at least a day’s wage in a single night. As soon as my shift ended, I rushed to the location, the piece of paper safely tucked in my pocket.

The neighborhood wasn’t one of my favorites, and the narrow alley leading to the venue made me very uncomfortable. I remember hoping that I wouldn’t get mugged.

At the end of the alley was a black metal door marked with a sign reading “Nov. 13th Contest”. I had finally arrived. Three knocks on the door later, a pair of eyes peered through a peephole, followed by a gruff voice asking my business.

I showed him the ad, and with a clank and a squeak, the door swung open, revealing another narrow path without roof.

“Down that alley, second door to the left,” said the man who looked like the bastard child of Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster, snatching the ad from my hands.

Beyond the wooden door lay an underground hangar, it’s chilly atmosphere momentarily making me consider retreating. But the sight of the other participants, about three dozen or so, each standing before a table equipped with the necessary tools, made me a little more comfortable.

A porky man wobbled to the entrance and greeted me.

“Heya fellow,” he said in a friendly voice. “First time here I recon?”

“Er, yes,” I hesitated.

“You know why you’re here?” he winked.

“Of course, I do. I’m here for the first prize,” I jokingly said.

“Great,” he said, apparently relieved. “We’re still awaiting a few more guests. You can take that table over there,” he pointed somewhere in the middle of the room.

The metallic tables blended seamlessly with the similarly colored tools, fitting the industrial aesthetic of the place. Having some time to kill, I began to observe the other participants, who were a mix of weirdos bordering on the bizarre. But being a badly dressed, broke guy myself, I kinda shrugged it off, attributing their odd behavior to nerves or anticipation of the competition.

Twenty minutes later, the door behind me shut with a loud bang. The portly man from earlier ascended a small podium, his voice resonating throughout the cavernous space, even without a mic. He laid down the rules and carts began to circulate.

“… and this time, keep it to carving only. Understood, Jack?” The man on the podium directed his gaze towards ‘Jack’, a middle-aged man with a weird head tick who grumbled and nodded simultaneously.

“This time,” the man on the podium continued, “you won’t have the luxury of choosing your head. Haven’t been able to procure enough, so we’re distributing them randomly. No exchange, understood?”

In unison, all participants responded, “Yes sir.”

As the carts drew nearer, I noticed something off about them. It wasn’t until one was banged on my table that I realized the horrible truth. My ‘pumpkin’ was the severed head of a young woman. The sight was so shocking that I wanted to scream my lungs out.

The other participants seemed unfazed by the gruesome spectacle. I tentatively touched the head on my table, its lifelike texture making me recoil in shivers. My brain refused to believe it was real. I convinced myself that it was a prop and tried to regain my composure.

“And begin! You have an hour,” the porky man’s voice echoed. I had almost forgotten about the competition at that point.

I watched in horror how the other participants carved into the faces as if they were mere pumpkins. It became very clear that these weren’t props. I was shivering uncontrollably, staring at the head in front of me. There was no way I could bring myself to desecrate the face of an actual human being.

The man on the podium, whom I call Porky, approached, noticing my hesitation.

“What’s the matter?” he scowled.

“Er, I- I’m a little cold,” I stammered. “Didn’t bring my good coat.”

“Ah well. Be better prepared next time. Now, come on. Carve your head. You’ve already lost five minutes.”

I picked up the knife with my trembling hand, aware of Porky’s watchful gaze. So many thoughts ran through my head, like explaining how this was all a big mistake. Or perhaps I should bolt it. Or… Or do something, anything to avoid committing this perverse act unworthy of even the grossest of human beings.

But I knew. Yes, I knew. Any sign of dissent or attempt to flee would result in my premature death. Maybe my head would even end up in a freezer until the next event, just like this poor woman. How did she even end up here, I wondered.

Too afraid to act with decency, I began to slice my kitchen knife in her eye socket, focusing on making the smallest cuts possible to buy time. And also to keep my meager supper inside my stomach. A few cuts later, Porky had seen enough to leave me alone.

Somehow, I had managed to keep my composure until the end of the hour without throwing up or passing out. And, after the award ceremony, which my mind mercifully erased, I received my participation money. I was actually relieved that I hadn’t received a prize. Had I, I don’t think I’d have had the power to stay alive until this day.

After I left the place, I rushed to the nearby park to wash my hands, then returned home, curled up into a ball, unable to sleep for the rest of the night.

I considered telling the cops, but what then? Would they even believe me? Even if they did, I could be arrested for complicity.

With the first rays of sunlight, I found myself inexplicably drawn back to the site of the previous night’s horror. I needed to confirm whether the events were a product of my frayed sanity or a frightening reality.

I knocked on the door, unsure of what to do if confronted by the same pair of angry eyes that had peered at me the night before. Fortunately, nothing happened. I knocked again, and again. No answer.

With no one around the area, I climbed over the door and ventured inside. It was a simple door leading to an open hallway. From there, I retraced my steps until I was at the hangar’s door, which, oddly enough, creaked open as I turned the round handle.

A voice in my head screamed at me to flee, but I was compelled to enter the now-empty hangar, devoid of tables, tools, and Porky. Each echoing step amplified my anxiety. Despite my fear, I had to know whether this had been just a nightmare induced by the cold, insomnia, and hunger of the past few weeks.

As I explored the vacant hangar, a small piece of brain tissue and some bloodstains where my table had been confirmed my worst fears. It had all been real.

Suddenly, the door slammed shut behind me, sending me into a panic. I sprinted towards the exit, my mind conjuring images of a monstrous creature lurking in the shadows, whose hairy tentacles were always mere inches from pulling me into the dark abyss.

The door’s round handle kept spinning as I tried to open it. I repeatedly kicked the door, but it wouldn’t budge. In desperation, I climbed up a thick pipe I had spotted before, and broke a window to escape, the fear of being pursued by some unseen horror fueling my desperation. Miraculously the glass didn’t injure me, and I escaped through the roof side.

Despite my mind still reeling from the nightmarish experience, necessity drove me back to work that day. In the following weeks, I sought better employment, eventually landing an office job at a respectable company. Despite the low pay, it offered a glimmer of hope – a chance to leave the city and my nightmare behind.

Unfortunately, as it happens, one year passed without securing the funds to relocate. I scoured every newspaper after Halloween, hoping to find a similar ad and alert the authorities, but to no avail. And yes, like a fool, I even revisited the site on the same day, knocking on the door, but no one answered.

Haunted by the gruesome event and frustrated by my inability to prove its occurrence, I focused on advancing my career. Less than a year later, I moved to a city hundreds of miles away, vowing to never return, as the memory of that night is forever etched in my mind.

Over the years, I’ve tried to date women on several occasions, but the sight of a woman’s face, eyes closed, was reminiscent of the woman’s face I carved. Unable to overcome that trauma, I resigned myself to a solitary existence, haunted by the fear that one day, Porky might find me and turn me into a prop for their macabre contest.

And today, the 13th of November, I know that sleep will elude me, like it has every year on this date since that cursed day. With the darkness of the night, I am reminded that the monsters we fear are not hiding under our beds or inside the closet but walking among us. The most terrifying horrors do not lurk in the shadow; they hide in plain sight.

Pacific War 18 - Bloody Nights of Guadalcanal

Indecisive clashes around Guadalcanal had grated on both sides. During November, both the Japanese and the Americans decided to mount a surprise attack with strong forces in an effort to reach decision. These forces were even put into motion at about the same time, on 11th November 1942., and included warships, transport ships, submarines and aircraft. Long columns of ships criss-crossed the open…

A Chabad synagogue in Pomona, New York, burned to the ground on April 17th, along with its three Torah scrolls.

Torah scrolls are hand-written, hand-made, and kept in elaborately decorated cases or wrappings.

Many of them have long histories; my synagogue has two, I think, that were smuggled out of villages being destroyed in pogroms or in Nazi attacks. One of them is the only remaining piece of that village on earth.

Sometimes, the Torah scroll doesn't even belong to the synagogue, but is on loan from a place like the Memorial Scrolls Trust:

There's an entire Jewish holiday just for taking them out and dancing with them: Simchat Torah, "The Joy of Torah."

In fact, that was the holiday on which Hamas's invasion took place.

So it's a particular tragedy when a Torah is destroyed.

Chabad itself has a page about what goes into making just one Torah scroll:

"An authentic Torah scroll is a mind-boggling masterpiece of labor and skill. Comprising between 62 and 84 sheets of parchment -- cured, tanned, scraped and prepared according to exacting Torah law specifications -- and containing exactly 304,805 letters, the resulting handwritten scroll takes many months to complete.

"An expert pious scribe carefully inks each letter with a feather quill, under the intricate calligraphic guidelines of Ktav Ashurit (Ashurite Script). The sheets of parchment are then sewn together with sinews to form one long scroll. While most Torah scrolls stand around two feet in height and weigh 20-25 pounds, some are huge and quite heavy, while others are doll-sized and lightweight."

I learned all of this on Tumblr.

Once upon time, in people's "punch Nazis" days, I would've been able to find some mention on Tumblr of this synagogue burning.

There is none, so I'm posting about it.

And I'm going to quote Daniel Weiner, Rabbi of Temple de Hirsch Sinai in Bellevue, Washington, when his own synagogue was vandalized last November:

"It’s horrific and heartbreaking.... [Taking out your feelings about] what's going on in the Middle East by defacing a sacred space of a synagogue -- that’s the very definition of antisemitism."

I'm also posting about the Kehillat Shaarei Torah Synagogue in Toronto, whose windows were broken on Friday, April 19th, by someone who also tried to break the front door down.

And the April 15 graffiti outside a Bangor, Maine synagogue that said, "Nazi Israel 30K murdered," next to a crossed-out Star of David. The same synagogue faced pro-Hamas flyers plastered around it in November.

I was going to include all the synagogues vandalized over the past six months. But there are way too many. Several every week. Lots are swastikas.

I'll go back to just doing attacks on and near synagogues.

Someone has to talk about the 1-year-old who was stabbed outside Temple Beth Zion-Beth Israel (BZBI) synagogue, in Philadelphia, on April 13th.

The foiled terrorist attack on a Moscow synagogue on April 11th.

The man who, on April 9th, screamed at the rabbi at Moldova's Great Synagogue, "What are you doing here? How come no one has finished you off for everything you are doing to the Palestinians?" Just one week after people had vandalized a Holocaust memorial in nearby Soroka, and sprayed "Free Palestine" on it.

The Oldenburg, Germany synagogue that was firebombed on April 5th.

The Florida Las Olas Chabad Jewish Center, which on March 16 burned, but not to the ground. The Torah scrolls were safe, and no one was hurt, but the back of the building was severely damaged.

The planned-but-thwarted-on-March-7th ISIS massacre in a Moscow synagogue.

The stabbing of an Orthodox Jew in Switzerland on March 5th. (He was badly injured, but expected to survive.)

A man leaving a synagogue in Paris was beaten on March 3rd.

People set the courtyard of a synagogue in Sfax, Tunisia on fire on February 27th. Firefighters managed to put the fire out before it consumed the inside of the building.

The synagogue is no longer used; there are no Jews left in its area, and fewer than 1,000 Jews left in Tunisia overall.

(Thousands of Tunisian Jews were sent to work camps during the Holocaust. Antisemitism across the Middle East continued to increase rapidly for decades. By the 1970s, 90% of Tunisian Jews had fled to France or Israel.)

On February 18, an Orthodox Jew leaving Synagogue of Inverrary-Chabad in Lauderhill, Florida, was beaten by an attacker yelling racial slurs.

Someone deliberately chose International Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27, to smash all the windows in the front of Sgoolai Israel Synagogue in downtown Fredericton, New Brunswick.

On December 29, Turkey arrested 32 people linked to ISIS who were planning attacks on synagogues and churches.

On December 17, a man drove a U-Haul truck up onto the sidewalk between a barrier and the front door of the Kesher Israel Congregation in Washington D.C., got out, and started yelling "Gas the Jews." He also sprayed a foul-smelling substance on two people leaving the synagogue.

December 17 also saw 400 synagogues across the United States receive bomb threats.

On December 11, a man attacked an elderly couple on their way into a synagogue in Los Angeles, screaming, "Give me your earrings, Jew!!" and beating one of them bloody with a belt. (Happily, he chased the guy down the street, and caught him when his pants fell down.)

On December 10, a 16-year-old was arrested in Vienna for planning an attack on a synagogue.

On December 8, on the first night of Hanukkah, 15 synagogues in New York State received bomb threats. And someone screamed, "Free Palestine," and fired shots outside of Temple Israel in Albany, NY. Which has a preschool that was in session.

Meanwhile, the five Jews left in Egypt were canceling public Hanukkah candle-lighting at their synagogue out of fear of reprisals. Particularly after two Israelis in Alexandria had been gunned down by terrorists on October 8. (While Israel was still fighting Hamas in Israel.)

On November 15, a terrorist group set the only synagogue in Armenia on fire.

Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA) has a history of working with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

(PFLP is part of Hamas's network of groups. Samidoun is their nonprofit arm - which is why Germany banned Samidoun last year, although it's still active in many other countries.

PFLP is also actively supported by the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM), a diaspora nonprofit group, and Within Our Lifetime (WOL), an SJP spinoff in NYC.)

On November 11, halfway through Shabbat services, police asked Central Shul in Melbourne, Australia to evacuate "as a precaution" due to a "pro-Palestinian" protest that had chosen the neighboring park as its gathering place. Australia has seen some very outspoken antisemitism at protests, including the march shortly after October 7 that chanted "Gas the Jews."

Also on November 11, protesters targeted a synagogue along a march route. They sat in their cars, spraying green smoke and shouting at people leaving the synagogue. The march itself featured a record number of horrifying signs and chants.

On November 7th, Congregation Beth Tikvah in Montreal was firebombed, and the back door of the Jewish organization across the street (Federation CJA) was set on fire.

On November 4, protesters chanted "Bomb Israel," and burned an Israeli flag outside the only synagogue in Malmo, Sweden.

During October, there were 501 antisemitic acts under investigation in France in just three weeks, including groups gathering in front of synagogues shouting threats, and graffiti such as the words “killing Jews is a duty” sprayed outside a stadium.

On October 18, people firebombed a synagogue in Berlin after homes all over the neighborhood were graffitied with stars of David.

And also on October 18, hundreds of "pro-Palestine" rioters attacked the Or Zaruah Synagogue, in the Spanish enclave of Melilla in North Africa, while worshippers were inside.

Based on the video, they seem to have blocked the synagogue entrance completely, while screaming "Murderous Israel" and waving Palestinian flags. (Melilla is an autonomous zone belonging to Spain. It borders Morocco.)

On October 17, during pro-Palestinian protests, hundreds of rioters set fire to Al Hammah synagogue, an abandoned house of prayer in central Tunisia. They hammered down the building’s walls and raised a Palestinian flag on the building. Police did not intervene.

The Facebook page "Tunigate", which has around 88 thousand followers, published a video of the assault. So did "Radio Bousalem”, with 83 thousand users. The vast majority of comments on these videos welcome these acts. The building was severely damaged and almost completely razed to the ground.

On October 15, bomb threats were sent to many East Coast synagogues. Attleboro synagogue Congregation Agudas-Achim received one of the emails, which read, "The bombs will blow up in a few hours. A lot of people will die. You all deserve to die."

On October 8 -- again, while Hamas was still in Israel -- Madrid’s main synagogue was defaced with graffiti that read “Free Palestine” next to a crossed-out Star of David.

And on October 7, an assailant in Rockland, NY fired a BB gun at two women entering a synagogue. Later in the month, a banner at the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue in the area was vandalized with the words, “Fuckin kikes."

The Whole Story

Before we begin, a disclaimer: I believe that Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss are in a romantic relationship together. I've come to this conclusion carefully by reading all the signs Taylor has given us through her lyrics, media presence, clothing & jewelry choices, marketing, visuals, and interviews. This is all a theory of what I think has gone down between Karlie and Taylor since 2013.

2013 & Earlier - The Beginning

This may not have been their true first encounter (s/o @sophietv for her amazing work about this, she outlines all the times Kaylor interacted prior to the fashion show in 2013!).

According to a Teen Vogue interview in 2014, Taylor and Karlie were introduced to each other at the same time that Taylor met Emma Stone by Andrew Bevan of Teen Vogue. That was in 2008 at the Young Hollywood Awards.

After that first meeting in 2008, Taylor attended a number of fashion shows that Karlie walked in: Tommy Hilfiger Spring Show (9/16/2009); Rodarte Spring 2012 show in NYC (9/13/2011); Jean-Paul Gauthier in Paris (9/30/2012), Elie Saab Spring/Summer 2013 Show (10/3/2012).

Karlie & Taylor also both attended Roberto Cavalli's 40th Anniversary Party (9/30/2010) and the Met Gala in 2011. Teen Vogue included a quote from Karlie about the Met: "Taylor Swift. I was introduced to her at the Met Gala, and we joked about having a baking date!"

January 17th, 2012: The iconic Twitter interaction between Kaylor finally happens! Taylor's cover story with Vogue includes a quote about Karlie: "I love Karlie Kloss, I want to bake cookies with her!" Karlie tweets at her the same day the cover releases.

2013 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show

By the time the 2013 VS Show rolled around, I think they were already dating in some capacity, and the fashion show was a PR move. If Taylor & Karlie were going to become "close friends" in the public eye, they needed a high-profile, highly documented story about how they met to avoid questions about the nature of their close relationship.

Taylor performed I Knew You Were Trouble (Red) for the show, and she danced with Karlie on stage while 'snow' fell.

Karlie later revealed in an interview that she had gotten a dramatic haircut during a Vogue shoot just before the VS Fashion Show began. This haircut was a big deal- she changed her look completely without talking to anyone about it, and Vogue asked her to keep it a secret until the shoot dropped. So she showed the VS Fashion Show like "surprise! New hair!" which drew up quite a buzz. Taylor's hair was pretty blonde and long at the time, not fully bleached but certainly lightened up in comparison to her natural hair color.

Karlie posted a ton of pictures from this event (most of which were of her and Taylor) on her Instagram. She also starts posting really sappy Instagram posts about being in love.

I think that the November 14th, 2013 post about receiving your favorite flowers from the person you love is about Taylor Swift, but who's to say!

Then, on Friday, December 13th, 2013 (Taylor's 21st birthday, which I think she references in an interview sometime when she's talking about why she loves the number 13) Karlie posts two sugarplum fairy-related photos, capturing the scene in The Nutcracker where snow falls from the sky as delicate performers dressed in white dance along the stage. This is super Taylor-coded, giving YAIL, dancing in the damn snowglobe again.

On December 14th, Karlie posts a solo shot on instagram and tags Josh with photo credit (this is hilarious that we let them just tell us whoever took their picture with absolutely no questioning whether they might be lying???). For some reason, I get the feeling that Taylor took this photo for Karlie the morning after her birthday when they were still together from celebrating the night before.

2014 - You're My Best Friend

Taylor buys her massive Tribeca, NY Penthouse apartment in April 2014. The home was actually TWO penthouse apartments next door to each other, and then she bought a third townhouse unit next door in 2017, and in 2018 she bought an additional 3-bedroom unit in the same building. Go off NYC Real Estate Queen! Taylor moved into her iconic Cornelia Street apartment during a round of renovations at her Tribeca home in 2016.

The unfortunate reality of 2016 was that Donald Trump really did get elected president, and then he really did take office and become the President of the United States from January 2017 - January 2021. (Sadly, none of it was a nightmare or even a collective hallucination, all of this actually happened in the good old U.S. of A., yeehaw!!) The sociopolitical climate in the US is charged, fraught, uncertain, and divided. Even worse for Taylor & Karlie is their closeness to Jared Kushner, Josh's older brother who is married to Ivanka Trump. Jared served as a senior advisor to Donnie Boy for his entire term, and he did such a good job being Don's accomplice in negligent, ethnocentric, homophobic, misogynistic leadership from the White House that he was made the Director of the Office of American Innovation (this entire office was created by Trump in March 2017 and dissolved by Biden in January 2021).

I think (and this is JUST speculating, I have no real evidence compiled yet to back this up, but I'll look for it eventually) Jared Kushner & Ivanka Trump are also in a queer-bearding relationship contract. I'm not going too far into it now, but there's stuff out there for both Jared and Ivanka, like former Trump staffer Noel Casler's allegations that Jared is gay and in an "arranged marriage" with Ivanka, who doesn't care about his sexuality due to her own sexual opportunism and likely queer identity.

If Jared and Ivanka really are queer and in a non-monogamous, mutually beneficial public relationship that allows them to co-parent their three children, then their involvement in the Trump administration makes things pretty damn unsafe if they ever were found out. So, I think that when Trump was elected, the entire Kushner family had to be super locked down to keep both Jared & Ivanka AND Josh & Karlie (and Mikey and Taylor) safe from any unwanted allegations.

Since the Kushner and Hess families hold international influence, wealth, and power, if all these billionaire men were suddenly outed as gay there could be serious economic and political consequences across the globe.

Not so coincidentally, Karlie and Taylor's last public event together was Lorde's birthday on Monday, November 7th, 2016. The 2016 Presidential Election took place on Tuesday, November 8th, 2016, which sealed the fate of the Kushner name to be attached to Donald Trump's Presidency. I believe that if Trump had not won (which no one expected him to do) Karlie & Taylor would not have started this Love Blackout.

Joe really was a great choice for Taylor's life: he had features similar to Karlie's (light eyes, tall, blonde hair), he didn't have much going on with his own reputation, he had a sparkling clean dating history - because Taylor was his first ever girlfriend, he was a fellow artist and was already media trained, and he was gay, too!

Reputation was released on November 10, 2017.I consider Reputation to be Taylor & Karlie's "I'm so in love that I might stop breathing" album. This is the honeymoon, this is the up all night, can't stop, won't stop, I need you more than air kind of love.

This album is all about the pining and desperately waiting, hiding their anticipation, hands shaking from holding back from touching each other where anyone might see them. Much like Taylor's own media presence & public interactions in the Reputation era, Kaylor had gone dark, nobody heard from them for months, but they're doing better than they ever were.

2018 - Desperate Measures

The honeymoon phase ends in 2018 as shit in America gets worse for queer folks. The sociopolitical climate is getting more dangerous now, and Trump's constant attacks on LGBTQIA+ rights & safety is making matters much worse. Instead of hosting her usual big 4th of July Party at the Holiday House in RI, Toe goes on vacation to Turks & Caicos to celebrate the holiday. They call Backgrid to take a few pictures of them "frolicking" at the beach together. I'm so convinced, they're in LOVE!! Can't get enough of each other!! They totally hold hands all the time, this feels so natural and not weird at all!

Karlie posts a few photos in a row about the 4th of July this year. First, she's in her Anti-Hero colored pajamas with her left eye closed in a wink, sitting on a few suitcases, captioned "Kissin Paris Goodbye. *kissy face emoji*"

Then, another post on the 4th itself is of a WMAG stylized photoshoot where Karlie is a cowboy, for the Wild West with Cowboy Karlie campaign. Joshlie announces their engagement on July 24, 2018 while the two are on a vacation in XYZ? People Magazine reports that the proposal "took place a few weeks ago during a romantic weekend together in upstate New York." So they got engaged sometime in the beginning of July, right?

On July 10th, she posts a video of herself voguing down the runway with "This Kiki is Marvelous" playing in the background during Paris Fashion Week in September 2013. Her performance was considered one of the highlights of Paris Fashion Week. She captioned the video: Mood. @/jpgaultierofficial.

Quick question for Karlie, why do you feel the same way you felt before you went on stage for a make or break performance out of your comfort zone? You may remember that last year, patrons were able to get their hands on $25 hand-drawn ink doodles by Mx. Wellman! This turned out to be a lovely way to raise some additional support for the Hallowoods holiday season, so this year, I'm opening them to the public.

let me preface this by saying I could talk about this piece of shit for HOURS. also these range from completely random trivia things to silly to oddly specific. also I may have projected a bit too much but oh well, that's what fictional babygirls are for

- I'm a trans Jonah truther. but also he'd been going exclusively by he/him pretty much his whole life until someone in the middle of an argument called him "it" and he had one of those "wait am I even a person" moments and since then he does not know wtf he is. is he a man? is he a thing? is he a creature? is he a concept? none of the above? all of the avobe? who knows. not even the Eye knows what's going on with that.

- he grew up on the outskirts of Edinburgh, and he has very mixed feelings about it. like on one hand he did not like it and was overjoyed to leave, but on the other that is his home and you will not disrespect it. to this day if anyone talks shit about Edinburgh or Scotland in general he has to stop himself from acting bothered about it.

- I'm sorry but I can smell his daddy/mommy issues from MILES away (he has both).

- he used to be super self-conscious. the "shit they're all staring at me but I need to pretend to be confident and respectable so fuck it" sort of way.

- he was especially insecure about his freckles. he was convinced they made him look like a little kid (which is not true, freckles are gorgeous and fuck anyone who thinks otherwise).

- he's always had a huge staring problem. and he originally had really big eyes so if anyone caught his interest they'd just be doing their thing and then turn around and catch him like 👁️_👁️.

- also he was always that kid that asked too many questions, especially regarding god (another thing I can smell from miles away is the religious trauma).

- he was born on november 13th 1787 (a tuesday the 13th, which in some cultures is believed to be a bad luck day, like friday the 13th) and officially founded the Institute on his 31st birthday (november 13th 1818, a friday the 13th).

- he has a collection of lover's eyes gifted by his many boyfriends acquaintances. he's got them all in a little box at his place and he remembers the exact moment each was gifted to him.

- I'm not going to get into how I imagine the time between when Barnabas got chucked into the Lonely and when he went to get his bones (it would take far too long) but this bitch was Not Having A Good Time. those broken glasses and torn pages Barny mentioned in his last letter? all him baby.

- also after Barnabas died he had a period of a couple weeks where he did not speak. not one word. he looked completely normal otherwise but people did notice. after that he just acted like nothing had happened and pretended to be clueless when people asked him about it.

- speaking of Barnabas's bones, he got a quill made of the bones in the ring finger of his left hand. he never uses it (no occasion is special enough) but he takes it with him any time he leaves the Institute for longer than a day (he couldn't take it with him to jail though :( ).

- speaking of leaving the Institute, he travels surprisingly rarely. it's not that he doesn't like traveling or that he can't afford it, he simply doesn't do it.

- Jonathan Fanshawe's last letter hurt him far more than he expected, and so did Albrecht's death. he thought he wouldn't feel much after Barny's death but that shit hit him.

- his eyesight gets worse every time he gets a new body. as Elias his glasses are so thick it's almost comical.

- he loves fluffy blankets with a PASSION.

-but he despises fluffy sweaters. he cannot wear them.

- he also loves pillows, cushions etc. he has at least 10 in his bed.

- you can't tell me his egotistical ass doesn't spend AT LEAST 2 hours getting ready every day (and 50% of that time he spends just staring at himself, checking that every minute detail is absolutely perfect).

- he's a raging hypochondriac. this man (gender neutral) will sneeze once and he's already thinking about his next body.

- his favorite cake flavour is red velvet. also black forest cake reminds him of Albrecht.

- as much as I like the joke of Jonah being the Lukases communal bootycall, he actually despises most of that family.

- aside from his long list of "acquaintances", he did have a super short fling with Simon Fairchild. Simon still jokes about it to this day and Jonah hates him for it.

- when he's angry or under a lot of stress he'll just stop blinking. like he usually doesn't blink as often as The Average Human, but if he's mad he'll just stop entirely. this started happening after the failed Watcher's Crown, but he didn't notice it until one time Gertrude pointed it out (that was a fun conversation, I might write something about this eventually).

- sometimes he'll forget or just not feel like doing normal bodily functions like eating or sleeping, and when he remembers that he has to in order to, you know, function, he gets so mad about it (why are human bodies so high maintenance and so unreliable at the same time istg).

- he used to be a sacredy cat. not anymore because he can See when people are close to him, but if you were to come up behind him to scare him back in the day he would leap.

- he has an odd fondness for amaranth flowers. I doubt he's a plant person but he likes those a lot (and tbh now that I think about it the mental image of plant mom Jonah makes me very soft. he'd tell the plants his Evil Plans and shit).

this is all I could think of off the top of my head but I'll probably add more as time goes by. I loved finally listing my headcanons for this little fucker so thanks for giving me the chance lol

We're happy to announce the first round of the BBC Merlin Rare Pair Fest! This is a prompt-based event that will focus on the lesser explored relationships (romantic & platonic), and run from August until November. For the sake of this fest, any work not focusing on Merlin & Arthur (as either romantic or platonic) will count as a rare pair.

Schedule:

Prompting: August 17th until August 31st - anyone will be able to leave up to 10 prompts through a form we'll share

September 1st/2nd: a list of all submitted prompts goes live

Claiming opens: September 3rd - anyone who would like to create for this part of the fest can claim a prompt by filling out another form. You do not need to have submitted prompts to do this, and submitting prompts does not mean you'll have to otherwise participate!

Works Due: November 5th - all creations created for a claimed prompt must be submitted to our AO3 collection. We will draw up a posting schedule by which works will be revealed over the next few weeks!
