Between Christmas and Jan 4 we have even more new friendly fowl, one duckling and several baby chicks. We are hoping for more ducks very soon. One of our Silkie hens has shown signs of being broody gathering a large clutch of eggs. She sat on eggs that were hers and some others from other chicks and ducks too. Thursday’s Turkey Tale Trot over on Thursdays to hear or read a “Turkey Tale”, a brief tidbit of information about the world of turkeys. Today to start off we have a ‘did you know?’ question. Did you know? “The snood is similar to a wattle, and may be called a wattle when all of a turkey's face, head, and neck markings are described together, but it is a distinct feature. The base of the snood is just above the bill, and the total length can vary from just 1-2 inches to 5-6 inches or longer depending on the bird's gender, health, and mood. It’s been a busy and exciting day. We watched the inauguration and got several jobs done too. Tony helped me move chicks and ducks from one brooder to another and give the brooder container a good clean. The old litter was placed into our raised bed and mixed in with the new leaf debris from the park cleaning Monday. The friendly fowl are allowed to go in the raised beds to help with the composting. The chicks and ducks from one brooder were moved to one with a drip waterer made from an empty creamer jug, they are adjusted. The drip system keeps the container cleaner, especially from the mess ducks are known to make. Most of today’s chores invoked caring for animals though Tony delivered pies he baked and I planted more seeds. Tony’s sweet potato pies are the best ever! Walks around the #farm are filled with wonder and amazement. Here are a few comparisons and play on words. Turkey tail mushrooms and turkeys showing their tails. You can see how the #turkeytailmushroom got it’s name. Chicken of the woods mushroom and chickens in the wood. Chicken of the woods (Laetiporus sulphureus) is an edible polypore mushroom. Chicken-of-the-Woods or the Sulphur Polypore, this bracket fungus is seen most often on beech, oak, chestnut and less frequently on cherry and other hardwoods. Sighted Lion’s mane near the top of a tree. It’s a beautiful, delicious #mushroom in this area. “Hericium is easy to identify: it is the only species that forms a single clump of dangling spines, rather than hanging its spines from a branched structure. Additional identifying features include the fact that it typically appears on the wounds of living or very recently cut hardwoods” Campers here get to see our #friendlyfowl and the views on the property.
