It’s November, the month we honor our military veterans. The home page of our farm website features our very own lead farmer, Major Retired Anthony M. Jones. Tony served in the United States Army twenty years. It was our honor as his family to support him while he served our country and we do so now as he serves our community. Tony recently accepted an invitation to serve on the board for the @farmerveterancoalition of SC representing the Lowcountry region. Thank you for setting a great example of leadership in the agricultural community. Shoutout to all military veterans and their families. To veterans who are now serving their communities in the agricultural field. Thank you for your service! Special thanks to our son-in-law @profileart116 David Jackson, for his talent in drawing a logo representing Tony’s transition from soldier to farmer. #army #armystrong #armyveteran #armyvet #military #militaryveteran #retiredmilitary #veteranfarmer #farmer #farmersofcolor #gullah #marines #airforce #navy #coastguard #nationalguard #reservist #agriculture #agriculturelife (at Morning Glory Homestead) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHMgh_jhPuj/?igshid=1fcgf05l2obnj

TurkeyTracks We see them all the time and maybe you do too. These are the tracks of our #royalpalm #turkeys. They are getting to be a bit troublesome, venturing on the porches and knocking over things. Leaving poop behind and all that. Tony @amjones42 is looking forward to having a lower number of turkeys after the #holidayseason. #farm #farmersofcolor #friendlyfowl #farmbirds #turkeysofinstagram #farmanimals #farmanimalsofinstagram #poultry #poultryofinstagram #veteranowned #veteranfarmer #retiredvet #armyveteran #womenwhofarm #retiredarmywife #farmerveterancoalition (at Morning Glory Homestead) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGjN99qlHfg/?igshid=1u2wtan66y0z9

Sunday Supper at the Campfire It’s just the family tonight sitting around the campfire about to put our “hobo” meals on the fire. Of course as soon as we put the foil packs down our cats came over to see what we were up too. They are smart, they know we usually have some food nearby when we’re around the fire. #pumpkins and #falldecor on the table make for a nice evening outdoors. The sky was clear for stargazing. We had guests at both of our #hipcamp #campsites they were doing their own thing and we were enjoying our scenery as much as they were. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening, #outdoordining is wonderful. #outdoors #farm #farmersofcolor #bipoc #outdoorliving #outdooradventures #rural #rurallife #eatoutside #cat #catsofinstagram #catlife #catstagram (at Morning Glory Homestead) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGieBbhlXZI/?igshid=1gn13ore7j0r4

We have sweet potatoes. Here are some facts about them. “True to their name, sweet potatoes have a naturally sweet flavor, which is further enhanced through cooking methods like roasting. They are also one of the top sources of beta-carotene—a precursor to vitamin A. Unlike a potato (edible tubers of the nightshade family), the sweet “potato” is a large edible root within the morning glory family. They’re also different from yams, which are edible tubers within the lily family and native to Africa and Asia. Chances are the “yams” found in your local supermarket are actually a variety of sweet potato. True yams are distinguishable by their blackish/brown, bark-like skin and white or purple-toned flesh.” In the photos 1-3 were taken after one washing, the remainder after a scrub. We amount pictured weighted 7.47/lbs. Contact us for our by the pound or bushel prices. #sweetpotato #sweetpotatoes #rootvegetables #rootveggies #farm #farmersofcolor #goodfood #eat #eatlocal #homesteadinglife #bakedsweetpotatoes #bakedsweetpotato #gullaheats #southernfood #foodiegram #foodie #foodiesofinstagram #foodies #foodphotography (at Morning Glory Homestead) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGIzj0Ml_VO/?igshid=rhcrwxbxnj65

The late Helen DuBose, was a giant in the world of agriculture! “A granddaughter of a farmer, Helen was not only the first to graduate from college in her family, she was the first in her family since slavery to finish the 6th grade. Determined to get an agricultural degree, she received a bachelor's degree in 1941 from Florida A&M. This made her the first black woman in the country to receive an Agricultural degree.” #hbcu #hbcugrad #hbcupride #1890extension #floridaagriculturalandmechanicaluniversity #floridaaandmuniversity #agriculture #history #womenwhofarm #farmersofcolor #blueberryfarm #homesteading #homestead #georgiafarmer #educator #teacher https://www.instagram.com/p/CDwsnxOFyAD/?igshid=1plaez9rp8v1z

The Turkeys. The older, larger Turkey is a female that adopted the three poults when they were younger. They each are from different females and for a while they closely followed their moms around the farm not spending much time together. They were each left to fend for themselves and the three females who left them went on to get broody again, lay more eggs with plans of starting over. Another female took the young turkeys in so to speak, they began following her and still do. In the video they are near the heap vines eating the seeds off the tops of tall grass. It’s mowed now but every now and then we allow some spots to grow to to seed before mowing so the “friendly fowl” can eat them. #turkey #turkeys #turkeysofinstagram #turkeypoults #poultry #poultryofinstagram #fowl #royalpalm #royalpalms #royalpalmturkey #farmanimals #farmanimalsofinstagram #grassfed #pasturedpoultry #freerange #animals #animalhusbandry #veteranfarmer #womenwhofarm #homesteading #homestead #farmstead #farmersofcolor #gullahgeechee #sthelenaislandsc #beaufortsc (at Morning Glory Homestead) https://www.instagram.com/p/CD4WRQpleW4/?igshid=k5q3yw8a3wls

Our Gullah Campfire Supper with Stories and Songs was a great evening. Our Hipcamp camping guests had a tour followed by the supper that started outside by a campfire but ended up inside due to the storm. Tony’s cousin and our neighbor Mr. Robert “Bobby” Middleton was our guest storyteller. He shared about his life, his book, growing up on St. Helena on a family farm, local traditions and #customs . After being led in #prayer and grace by Mr. Middleton our guests were introduced to #shrimp and #okra , a favorite of ours and Mr. Middleton, and crowder peas. Mr. Middleton “raised” one of favorite songs, “I Will Trust in the Lord” and I accompanied him on #guitar. Tony and Mr. Middleton together shared wonderful local #history some in #gullah and our guests shared some of their own #familystories , from the Midwest, it was a great night of #fellowship , #culturalexchange and #hospitality . Breaking bread together, especially cornbread, 😆, can serve as a catalyst for amiable experiences between #Ethnic and #Racial groups. It was great answering questions about our foodways including how to cook okra. Tony’s shrimp and okra was fantastic!!! Tony and Mr. Middleton are both #army #veterans and shared a few Army stories too. #greatevening #camping #campinglife #campfire #farmlife #farmtour #farmersofcolor #gullahgeechee #blackfarmers #farmersofcolor #localfood #southernfood #elders #africandishes #africandiaspora #africanamerican #veterans (at Morning Glory Homestead) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEyrciflGcp/?igshid=1k328ar70rad7

Did you know? As a boy, George Carver visited a neighbors house and saw beautiful paintings hanging on the walls and immediately desired to be able to paint as well. Without any money for brushes, paints or paper, he made his paints from berries, roots, and flowers. He used boards and bark rather than paper. We’re making paints and stains from flower petals and eggplant peelings. The flowers were a part of birthday bouquets that are being repurposed. Once the petals were collected, hot water was added. The jars will sit overnight. Tomorrow we will follow these steps, “Add 2-3 drops of vinegar and a pinch of salt. Salt helps to "fix" or increase the "fastness" of the colours, so does the vinegar which also improves reds and purples. You can also add a strong alcohol in proportions of 1 part alcohol to 4 parts ink.” Next, “Using a sieve, strain the liquid into the jar and the ink is ready to use. Use lightweight watercolour paper to paint on.” If you do this at home let us know how your natural paints and stains turn out. Enjoy a walk outside looking for plants that can be used to make your paints. Make sure you have permission if the plants are not yours. Parents, let’s us know if you need any help with STEM or STEAM related lessons, projects or activities for your children. Our farm reaches out to schools (homeschool, public and private), programs and churches to teach about history, life science, and other subjects. Holler if you need us! #georgewashingtoncarver #art #artist #stemeducation #steameducation #paint #painting #nature #plants #environment #repurposed #education #teachkids #teachersofinstagram #adventurer #observationalpainting #gatherer #creation #explore #outside #outsideisfree #farmlife #farmersofcolor #farming #creative #makersgonnamake #frugal #homeschool #homeschooling #4hgrowshere (at Morning Glory Homestead) https://www.instagram.com/p/CESDMkiFX4B/?igshid=56vhy5lnfxl6

Seed saving is an important part of what goes on here each year. Selecting good plants from which to harvest, drying seeds, separating from the flower or pod, storing and labeling usually make for a great source of seeds for the next planting season. Reusing glass or plastic bottles and jars is a great, inexpensive way to store seeds. There is less chance for deterioration of the seed storage container as in paper envelopes or bags or plastic storage bags. Old jelly jars, seasoning bottles, or medicine bottles can make good containers for seed storage. It doesn’t take much time or effort to relabel the clean jars or bottles with seed information. After that is done, store them in a cool dry location until till needed. If you have enough to share or swap that would be a great way to help a neighbor start a garden and extend their food source. A tablespoon full of small seeds can go a long way towards helping get a new garden started. Swap or exchange seeds with someone who has plants you would like but can’t find seeds, spread the love around. There is power is seeds and saving seeds, it builds our food security and extends food justice in areas considered food desserts or where access to healthy, fresh foods are not available or not encouraged. There are neighborhoods where plans for farmers markets and good green grocers are not encouraged or included that’s a place where seed power and community involvement is much needed. Let’s start by saving seeds! #seedsaving #seeds #seedexchange #fooddesert #foodjustice #foodapartheid #communitygarden #neighborhoodgarden #victorygarden #seedsofpower #seedsofhope #seedsofchange #seedsavers #freeseeds #communityaction #loveyourneighbor #foodsecurity #helpingothers #share #plan #lendahand #sow #sowinlove #sowingseeds #gullahgeechee #farmersofcolor #veterans #fighthunger (at Morning Glory Homestead) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEPyp-ylZUE/?igshid=1dx75ma4g7779
