Contacting an Incubator
It feels like most of the magical heroes, or aspiring magical heroes, in my orbit are working within the paradigm of Puella Magi Madoka Magica and I’ve seen many requests across platforms for tips regarding contacting Kyubey or another Incubator.
For the uninitiated, an Incubator is a ‘messenger of magic’; they grant a wish in exchange for service as a magical hero. In Puella Magi Madoka Magic and related works, those who form a contract with an Incubator must defeat witches—corrupted entities that feed upon the hopes and dreams of the masses.
Note: While this agreement may seem fair to some and the Incubator may seem enthusiastic to help by any means necessary, Incubators are known for their calculating ways and almost trickster-like mentality. Incubators cannot exhibit emotions of any kind and as a result Incubators often seem cold and uncaring. However, Incubators seek to achieve only one main goal; to preserve the universe from total entropy. To ensure this, they employ all logical and efficient means to create magical heroes.
You may want to try contact an Incubator if you want to initiate your magical hero journey or if you want clarity or direction regarding this kind of work. I’ve seen evidence of folks using a variety of methods in order to contact an Incubator, namely through evocation, divination, and invocation/channeling techniques. If you are a solo practitioner looking for this communication, I would definitely recommend the routes of evocation and divination. Here is how I would go about contacting an Incubator:
Prepare a dimly lit space with a mirror, and/or perhaps a candle, where you can work with minimal distractions. Banish as you would normally and prepare to meditate.
Position yourself comfortably in front of the mirror or candle. If you have both, try to place the candle beneath the reflection of your face or off to the side—just try to not obstruct the view of your reflection.
Relax your body and begin meditating with your eyes closed. Try to not focus on anything in particular and steady your breathing into regular intervals.
When you are satisfied with your breathing, open your eyes and stare into your reflection with a soft gaze (as in, you do not have to fight to keep your eyes wide open). Try to keep your eyes open for as long as possible before blinking and repeating, all the while keeping your breathing regular.
After a bit, you may notice your reflection changing or distorting, or you may start seeing things on the periphery of your vision. This is when, I believe, an Incubator may approach you—either by appearing behind or beside you visibly in the mirror or by altering your reflection entirely. This is when you can initiate telepathic conversation. Try to keep your breathing regular throughout this experience.
At this point, you can continue communicating telepathically or introduce a divinatory tool. If you want to use a form of divination, I recommend something simple like using a pendulum or automatic writing—something that is not too complex or requires a lot of effort as to not distract you from your breathing or could potentially break your connection.
When you are satisfied, or the Incubator leaves, close your eyes and ease out of state. Snuff any lit candles and banish to clear the space.
This post is part of my Magi Praxis series. If you have any suggestions for future topics, or you have attempted anything I have shared and want you share your experiences, please send me a message! I am always happy to go back and provide further explanation as well. ☆

Guess what I did. ^u^ I contracted! I'm a real puella magi now.
I use a necklace, but it isn't really my soul gem because my soul gem is in the astral. It's just a visualization for it/way of managing it in the physical realm. I wrote in my journal about the specifics. I'll transcribe it.
Tumblr media
Contract day! Day 0. 7/17/2024. I made a contract with Kyubey. He had a black hat that looked like an upside down bowl. This is what happened: I got the necklace for my soul gem and put it in the middle of the circle. I sat on one side and told Kyubey to sit on the other. I put a white ring on my left to represent the hope of magical girls. I put a black ring on my right to represent the despair of magical girls. Lastly, I put a purple ring in front of me to represent myself. When all that was done, I cast a circle and called upon Kyubey. He answered and asked "What is your wish?" I didn't expect him to get there so quickly. I forgot my wish and almost left the circle to grab this journal to remember. Instead, I made myself focus until I remembered. I repeated my wish until the phrasing felt right. I think he could tell I wasn't very comfortable the first few times. When he transferred my soul, it felt like something was touching my insides, but it didn't hurt, it was just uncomfortable. When it was complete, I felt extremely dizzy, and my body felt hollow and lightweight. The Kyubey looked like this:

@meguca-meduka was the one that helped me figure out how to contract without astral projecting, so I am very thankful to you, Rem! ^U^

This is so funny because kyubey looks even more intimidating than in the actual manga (or anime but they weren't going for intimidation there) but he's literally just asking her to work as a waitress to pay for some broken plates.

Ever get the impression that fans are bad at ignoring Kyubey's status as the Big Bad and the reason for the messes in the first place, especially in regards to Rebellion? Like without him, Rebellion would not have happened as it did.
Like especially the Japanese side of the fandom, which likes writing him as some cute, silly thing and not, like, living societal abuse of girls in plushie form.
YES! Plenty of times. Though as much as I see a lot of hatred for Kyubey, there are a lot of controversies whether or not is Kyubey evil. I personally say yes, he is THE villain of the anime and no one will convince me otherwise. He's definitely not "emotionless". But he does lack empathy/ compassion (a mere understanding of it) and functions solely by logic. I agree with the first half of your statement though.
I'm not really familiar with the difference between how is Kyubey (or any of the characters) perceived among japanese and other side of the fandom though. I see pretty much equal perceptions so can't tell much to that by my experience, but I'm surprised by what you say.

HEAR ME OUT YOU FUCKERS
Rika Furude and Homura Akemi are EXACTLY THE SAME!!! (spoilers for PMMM and HWTC)
Repeating the same month over and over to save the ones they love from a terrible fate, only to make said fate happen over and over again? Check.
For Homura, it was stopping Madoka from becoming a magical girl. For Rika, it was stopping the Great Hinamizawa Disaster.
Can't confide in anyone because they would be found out, forced to stop, and potentially pushed away? Check.
Homura refused to even get close to Madoka lest she try to stop her, and Rika put on a brave face while she was suffering so that her friends wouldn't find out about all the other Hinamizawas and blame her for their suffering.
Adorable little girl traumatized over and over to the point where she has developed a new personality? Check.
Homura went from the shy, sickly little girl we knew to a fucking badass with a god complex. Rika developed a literal alter, Frederica, who formed from the repeated trauma of reliving and reliving so many repeats of her worst fear.
Received time looping powers from a supernatural entity at a point where they weren't in a position to accept or decline, thereby forcing this destiny upon them at a young age? Check.
Homura had Kyuubey when Madoka first died, who manipulated her wish to turn back the clock. Rika had Hanyuu, who gave her the power to loop through the "endless June" of 1983 after the first GHD.
Eventually breaks, realizing that their efforts ultimately only made things worse and they will never achieve their goal, leading them to do the perfect opposite of what they wanted to (albeit in different ways)? Check.
Homura became distant and grew hateful of all magical girls, Madoka included, and allowed her to suffer the deaths of Mami, Sayaka, and Kyouko. Rika? She kept looping, but it wasn't for her friends anymore. She just wanted to escape the maze and get it over with.
Became their loved one's worst enemy against their will?! CHECK.
Homura turned into Homulilly and/or Walpurgisnacht (unclear, the new movie should answer this question for me), AKA the most horrible Witch known in magical girl history, and Madoka's natural enemy, setting out to subject magical girls to the same horrible fate before Madoka could rescue them. Satoko, after gaining looping powers of her own, discovered the truth of Rika's actions, and subjected her to horrible death after horrible death as revenge.
Purple hair? Yup.
Magical girl? Yes. (Rika had that one weird ass timeline in an OVA)
Need I explain further?
