I really hate it when people act like madoka magica somehow invented darker magical girl stories, because like…

Sailor Moon (in both the original manga and anime) had darker moments in it. Heck the ending of the first season shows our main cast getting killed off one by one.

Revolutionary Girl Utena (yes I consider rgu a magical girl anime you can fight me on this) while not dark and bleak right out of the gate slowly but surely shows it’s more ugly side as the anime goes on

so like…yeah. There are probably way more examples but magical girl anime before pmmm weren’t always sunshine and rainbows, they did have darker undertones to them, it’s just that madoka magica was more upfront with the more darker and bleaker aspects of its story.

My high school did a yearly poetry recitation contest (Poetry Out Loud), so Oh Boy do I know some poems. My favorites are Ozymandias and "the world is about to end and my grandparents are in love," by Kara Jackson. Also in 8th grade we had a Poe unit and had a class contest to make the best music video of the Raven, so I still know a good chunk of that.

i hadn't heard of the kara jackson one! just read through it and enjoyed it, particularly these lines > 'grandma returns to her love like a hymn, marks it with a color. // when the world ends will it suck the earth of all its love? /will i go taking somebody’s hand, / my skin becoming their skin?'

I'm really looking forward to diving into more of Ayre's particularly angsty storyline with the new Camp chat scenes in the next update. Theirs & Jolenn's take a little longer to develop because they're tied pretty closely with the central plot, but I think that just makes it tastier. 💜💜

In other news, I'm working on getting the update out as soon as I can. I wanted it to come out in spring, but things have not gone well in my life recently! They're still not going well, tbh.

For you, anon, and the others reading this: A little preview of the updated character arts I'm working on for the Chapter 2 launch.

M & F versions of Nex and Wren will be posted with the Chapter 2 update announcement, and then updated Ayre and Jolenn will follow when I finish them.

Wren got a bigger appearance update than I think anyone else did... I decided to change their hairstyle to something that matches their personality a bit better, and I expanded their wardrobe to get away from just drawing them exclusively in flannels.

The full(-ish) body versions of these will be included with the Chapter 2 update. 💜

This is something I've been meaning to make for a while, which is a convenient list of all the fiction I've written that is available to Read For Free Online and that is, uncharacteristically, not really horror, or pornography, or a downer, or dealing in depth & gritty detail with ~* ~*~* dark, upsetting themes*~*~*~. JUST the stuff that's sweet and gentle, with strong elements of optimism and/or humor. I do write stuff like that sometimes!

A few people have said to me recently or semi-recently that they would love to read my fiction but they're reluctant to do so because they really can't handle anything too bleak, or intense, or creepy, or X-rated. It's perfectly possible this is just a nicer, more polite way of saying "I'm not interested in and do not wish to subscribe to your (metaphorical) newsletter, thank you very much," but I've decided to proceed by taking it at face value. Hopefully, someone'll find this list useful!

Alterations: An Interview: Flash fiction about body modification. One of the first stories I ever had published.

Colossus: I...guess this is technically body horror? It has buildings made of fingernails and hair, but not, like, in a way that's supposed to be disgusting. Flash fiction.

Gardeners In Hades: This is mostly just some dudes complaining about their jobs and talking about plants. Like the previous three, very short.

Persephone, Traveling: Utopian slice-of-life type story about a robot moving from a society in which robots are abused and oppressed to a robot commune on the moon. Sequel to...

Pomegranate: Dystopian but chill slice-of-life type story about a robot and her one human friend.

Serpent's Bride: Flash fiction based on Beauty and the Beast + similar fairy tales.

The Giant and the Girl of Glass: Flash fiction about two disabled circus performers who are in love.
